Wow. I recently moved to SM and needed a cleaners/alterations place I could reliably go to. I'm very petite with super short little arms and need everything g shortened and/or hemmed, e.g. a midi is super long and a midid ends up being a maxi. These people are fantastic! I loved interacting with them, the woman very engaging personable warm and friendly. I took a dress where I needed the arms shortened by 6" and though that might not seem like such a hard task, the fabric was very fine mesh with a slip underlay--a two piece attached dress, and I was doubtful that they could pull it off. I took it in with a lot of trepidation, apprehensive that they'd tell me it couldn't be down. Well, I'll be damned if she wasn't super confident that it was not problem at all. I picked it up a week later, and voila! It was perfect, looked as good as the original with a slight flare to the fabric. They have a special machine for this type of work. I have now found my go-to place for all things dry clean or laundered or altered. They're in downtown SM and I think there's parking garage nearby if you can't get street. These wonderful people are geniuses! Small but very friendly atmosphere who literally worked a miracle for me. I had to be dressed big time for a black tie wedding in July. I hadn't worn my tux or very expensive Brioni suit in a decade. When I tried them on I was extremely embarrassed that I could not get them on as time had fattened me. Faced with renting a tux and maybe buying one and a new suit, J's rescued me BIG time. Their work was spectacular. Both fit perfectly now. Read other nice reviews on here and went to them to clean a suit. They stained my pants. We returned and asked how it happened, did not demand a refund, and they immediately were accusatory, rude, and combative. So they're rude, bad at cleaning, and don't offer good prices. read more

J's is that mom and pop shop that delivers quality to every piece of garment you drop off at their place. I had two difficult materials of jackets I needed to get tailored due to my petite size and short arms. The lady was very efficient in sizing me and we had a sweet conversation about life. The turn around time was one week for them. Each garment was $30. I picked up both and one of them was perfect, but the other seemed to have loose threads after wearing it for 2 nights. I went back in a couple days later and the owner carefully inspected it, noticing the threading was complete but there was just loose thread. She cut it on the spot. I would try to look at these garments before leaving in case you don't live close to return for any issues. read more

I got quotes off yelp ranging $45-60, which I was willing to pay but fortunately took one last chance at J's tailoring. I walked in with my coat and when they quoted me $40, I was elated. Jenny fitted my wedding gown really well. Strapless gowns can be a little nerve-wracking: a little too tight or a little too loose could spell disaster! After two fittings, it came out fitting like a tight hug, incredibly secure and yet possible to squeeze into (she gave specific instructions on how to breathe in and out and use the zipper and clasp). I thought her costs were really reasonable compared to other estimates (some of whom wanted deposits just for a consultation). For a $4k gown I paid a couple hundred dollars for inner cups, hemming 10 separate layers of tulle, and taking the bodice in a few inches, which required the lace hem of the bodice to be removed and then sewn back on by hand. I felt very nice while interacting with her in the shop. It's cozy and there's a soft whir of machines in the back. Jenny is straightforward about her costs and what alterations are possible, not trying to push a sale. read more

I have always been impressed by the folks who run this shop. They are hard working, good people who know their craft. They've tailored dresses, coats, pants...you name it. I've never had any of their hems or seams fray, either. On one occasion things were not ready when we agreed, but they immediately admitted their mistake and had it done in a few hours. Another time the hem wasn't the way I wanted, and I pointed it out. They took it back and fixed it. Things I've had dry cleaned have come out fine, too. Because of my height everything I buy is long on me, and sometimes I have to pay close to what the garmet cost me for the work...but that is the price of alterations (you don't pay based on the cost of the garment). They've charged me very fair prices over the years for their work. I highly recommend this place! read more

I absolutely love leaving my things at J's to be fixed. Frequently, I'm behind with getting things re-sewn, but because it's so easy to drop by J's I've taken to coming in more often. My winter (but actually year round coat for me) has been fixed a couple times by them, once for the cuff button and once for a patch - which is so good it's not easily found. This last drop by I also brought in the honey's coat - he had finally busted the zipper so I brought it in to be moved up and replaced. The fix was perfect and he loves it! J's is definitely my go-to in the area and I highly recommend them. read more

Inefficient business. Basic tailoring takes weeks. Had a jacket that needed sleeves shortened by like an inch. When I went to go pick it up at the date that was promised (2 weeks after drop off), they haven't even started on it. A previous dress I got hemmed another time also took WEEKS. Quality of work is average. Nothing beyond any other tailor. If you need to get something done by a certain time, I don't recommend this place. read more

I searched high and low in online reviews for someone to alter my wedding dress before settling on Jenny. She was AMAZING! It is hard trusting a $2K gown to someone you've never met before, but 3 fittings later I had the dress of my dreams! She was so kind, and her honesty about what was and what was NOT possible was refreshing, since so many tailors would rather just take your money. I wanted a bustle in my gown, and she said with the style I had it would not be possible. I also wanted to take off more of my train then she did, and she offered to do it in phases so I could see how it turned out instead of doing it all at once, which I'm so glad she did! Jenny is wonderful! Super nice and does great tailoring. She's tailored a formal gown, numerous dresses, work blazers, along with some other items for me. I was very apprehensive about finding a new tailor when I first moved to the area, as I'm picky regarding tailoring and had a great old-school tailor where I lived before. I had tried the tailor across the street from Safeway on El Camino Real in San Mateo and had been disappointed. J's is a much better option. She was able to shorten the sleeves of a blazer the other tailor had told me was not possible to fix, because the sleeve buttons were too close to the edge. Jenny shortened the sleeve by creating a new hem in the middle of the sleeve and shortening it there, instead of at the edge, which is what is usually done. I was nervous about it but it turned out really great. Jenny really takes pride in her work! It's not about quick or easy work, but I can tell she really enjoys it. I will be going there whenever I need tailoring. read more

Wow, I am so impressed with Jenny's work. I brought in a chiffon bridesmaid's dress that ended up being too tight in the chest and needed to be let out and also hemmed. Letting out definitely needs to be done by an experienced seamstress so I did a lot of searching before I went in to J's. I brought in the dress to show Jenny what I needed done and she told me to bring in the dress closer to the wedding/in a few weeks since I was pregnant. She said she'd be able to let the dress out but because of some of the detailing and stitching, she may not be able to match that. I was fine with that because I knew it could be a complicated job. She gave me a very reasonable quote for letting out and hemming. I dropped off my dress and my dress was ready a week later. When I went in and she showed me the dress, she had been able to let out the dress and replicated the detailing and stitching in the bodice! You couldn't even tell the dress had been let out! I was beyond impressed and happy and the dress fit me perfectly. I would highly recommend J's for any tailoring, Jenny is a true talent and has an eye for detail. read more

I had a bridesmaid dress altered here and Jenny was very helpful, made good suggestions for where to alter the dress, and I can't even tell where the alterations were made - really quality work. It did take a bit of time (about 1 month) but I went early so it worked well. I would definitely go here again. This is my neighborhood tailor. Last year I had my wedding dress hemmed here and the turn around was so quick - just 1 week. I asked for a dry cleaning of the dress as well because it was a salvage and was advised against it because of the cost and how delicate/intricate the dress was. I was recommended a spot clean instead because there was really only makeup stains around the neck of the dress. I appreciated this because it showed they cared more about me as a customer and the integrity of the garment than $$$. My partner also had his suit pants hemmed a few days before the ceremony. One year later, I had a bridesmaids dress hemmed and it was only a week turn around. Good job on the hem. The dress was an very particular color and they found a thread that matched it perfectly. My partner asked about getting a suit jacket taken in and was advised against it. We were told it could be done, but that it would not look good and possibly ruin the integrity of the suit. I really appreciated this because it showed he cared more for the product/customer than just getting business. Will definitely continue to get all my alterations done here. read more

These guys really saved my butt. I had a work trip out of town on Monday, and had a host of clothes to drop off the Friday before. Usually in a suburb like San Mateo you'll get two day service on drop off, sometimes three days. And I needed it next day. On a Saturday. Fortunately I'd seen J's on my way to the Caltrain and gave them a call - they don't usually do next-day for Saturday but would help me out.
