Mad Swede was one of the breweries I got the opportunity to try some beer from while passing through Boise two different times earlier this summer. I got a Scotch Ale called Caber Toss This, Ye Wee Lad. Quite a mouthful for a title of a beer! This particular Scotch Ale was good as it was sweet, smooth and malty. One of the better Scotchs Ales I've had in a little while. I usually love my Scotch Ales to taste super strong and while that isn't really a common thing to see and this beer did quite fit that specific thing it was still an enjoyable one. read more

I intended to stop at Mad Swede Brewing last time I was in town but didn't have time. I'm glad I did now to make brewery visits #209 for me. Yes, I usually give tasting notes of each beer but since I had company I didn't. I'm going to give you the highlights though. First of all I loved the name. Anyone who thinks names don't matter in a brewery is severely mistaken. Yes, the beer has to be great but catchy names, etc add to the experience. I got a flight and included a glass of mead. They don't brew the mead in house but partner with a local winery. I can't recall the name now but I wish I did as it was quite good. My favorite beers were the Naked Sunbather nut brown ale and the Caber Toss Scotch ale. I liked them enough I picked up a 6 pack of the brown for SWPFTD and a 4 pack of the Caber Toss for me. I also picked up a t-shirt for my son who loves the nordic themes. I will definitely be back to Mad Swede! This is the best micro brewery place here in Idaho that we have tried yet. We haven't tried every microbrewery but quite a few and this one is by far the best one. Every beer is unique and the best we have had so far. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the decor is awesome Steven was so helpful and very friendly. We came in here as our second stop during my husband and mines 22nd wedding anniversary extravaganza. We had been at one other place we thought was spectacular also but this far exceeded our expectations. The beers are incredible here and the music is pretty cool also. Nice setup at this brewery. Prices for a beer run around $5 or so which makes it easy to have a couple drinks and not break the bank. There are games like shuffleboard and darts available to play along with trivia cards on the table. Plus a couple TVs in there allow for watching a game or something to have in the background with the beer. They have a wide variety of beers from a session IPA to heavy IBU beers to stouts and everything else you could imagine. We got an amazing delivery from Mad Swede at the beginning of the COVID19 quarantine life. We received two half growlers and a 6 pack for $30 plus free delivery. Such a Great deal! The delivery driver was wearing gloves. It wasn't contact-less as he handed the cardboard box to my hubs, but otherwise it was a very easy transaction. We got the Lollylager Lager, the Peregrine Pilsner and their Golden ale. The lager was definitely my favorite. Very crisp and light but full of flavor. No watered down nonsense of domestics. Went for trivia night and had a ball. Street Tacos La Cruz food truck was there and I got birria tacos. Asked the bartender to recommend a brew to go with killer Mexican food. She recommended their Mundo Loco Mexican-style Lager. Never been a big beer drinker, but lately been getting into brewskys instead of my usual wine. Taste was on the lighter side (which was okay with this lightweight chicka) and was really good with my birrias. Trivia night happens here regularly and the staff has it down pat. Our group hangs out in the back room with the beer vats - you know, free tapping of beer. Just kidding. The place was packed and only two peeps were working the bar. They were movin' and kept light demeanors even though they were slammed. What a cool little spot in Boise! The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and the cocktail seltzers (which I have never had until here) were really good. Their beers are also good. I can't say they are the best or my favorite beers I have ever had (their hazy IPA didn't really scream hazy IPA), but they were definitely good and enjoyed them until the end. I tried this brewery for the first time a week or so ago, and was really excited for it! Wonderful service and such good beer! They're also dog friendly, which I always love (not that my dog has the manners to partake). There's a pretty great array of tables and a nice patio (though it was still too hot with these 100+ days). The atmosphere is nice, but it is bright. I was unaware when meeting a friend on a Thursday, but that's a big night for stand-up comedy. I usually don't mind a little stand-up, but when you're trying to catch up with a friend you haven't seen in a while it's a little difficult. And with the place being so bright you really have to give your full attention to the performance. Again - normally I'm good with that, just wasn't the vibe I was prepared for that night. Sadly, Jack was not a professional during our visit. Mask was forgotten so he took it upon himself to mutter a bunch of crap about how 'this has only been going on for 9 months' while his fellow employee (name unknown) yelled 'just put your f*cking mask on!'. All the while a mask was being requested since the jacket it was in was left at home. What a shame. A solid start for the newest brewery in Boise. It's obvious they have done well to open in a untapped (pun intended) area of town. Within an hour, the place was filling up. People in the area have been waiting for a brewery in their hood. Located a couple of blocks south of Costco on Cole, their clientele is mostly the bench area. Simple interior decor is highlighted by a wall sized mural of a hoppy Viking. The Beer: . . . . its coming along nicely. As an IPA girl I look for the strong, hoppy, bitter at first, followed by a smooth roundness in my beer. Their 2 IPAs missed this mark for me. Fairly basic, more bitter without the roundness, true to form for a new brewery, I wasn't loving them. I ordered the Pale and found more of the "roundness" I was looking for. The food truck had great brats, dogs, and chorizos. Overall this place has won my patience. Enough promise that I'll be back, and not just because it is so close to work! This is one of my favorite breweries in Boise, They got mainly dark beers but also a Lager type beer (Danegold) which is quite refreshing. My favorites are the IPA, Scotch Ale and of course the best Dunkelweizen I had so far in the US. This Dunkelweizen comes very close to a Bavarian Dunkles Weissbier. I got the last 3 beers on tap in my house since they are very kind and fill my kegs :) Mad Swede also has a nice lineup of food trucks (Kilted Cod on Saturday) during the week, comedy nights on Mondays and many more activities. The staff is friendly and I never had to wait for my beer. They got free popcorn and a few games. This is a must go to place when in Boise. read more

Visited Mad Swede Brewing this weekend and echo what several other initial reviews convey--a solid start for this new local brewery! Came on a Saturday afternoon with friends and was happy to see they had a food truck on the premises. Picked up a burger and fries from the food truck and then headed inside to try the brews. We ordered their 8 beer sampler. We found all the beers to be resoundingly a-ok with a couple of stand-outs for me. I tend to favor porters and stouts and so my favorite beer was their Varangian Nectar Stout, which was smooth without sacrificing complexity. I also really enjoyed another stout (don't remember the name!) that had a marvelous smoky flavor (not for everyone, but I rather enjoyed it). Their nut brown was quite good and rivals any brown ale out there. Their Freya's Pale From Exertion is an incredibly smooth and easy drinking beer, for those who fancy pales without a ton of hoppiness. The service was above and beyond wonderful. They have bar billiards, which we had never played before and a guy working in the tap room (brewer? owner? bartender? not sure) came over and gave us a run down of how to play (even though the rules are posted), which I thought was terribly kind. They also have a couple brewery dogs (kept mostly out of the tap room), which I always love to see. And, because they don't serve food, dogs are allowed inside! Love dog friendly breweries! The best part? They're located across the street from Costco. So, once you've done a little Costco shopping craziness, you can reward yourself with a beer. Go ahead. You deserve to drink like a Viking after that insanity. Get to it! read more

Mad Swede is in my top favorite Boise breweries. All of their beers are pretty decent and I like their space. I usually have no issue finding a seat, or parking. I like that I don't have to deal with downtown or paying for parking as well! They do a lot of different events such as trivia, stand up comedy, and they always seem to have a food truck available. I do think the way in which you order is weird, and not like most bars or breweries. Normally, you would walk up to the bar the bartender would come over and take your order. At Mad Swede, they have a designated ordering area off to the side. It might be more efficient I'm not sure, but it seems weird and not the norm. I have had bartenders there tell me to walk over to the area to make my order. That's pretty much the only downside to this place. All in all It's a solid brewery and I don't think you would be disappointed! read more

First of,this place was packed for trivia night. They had a great selection of beer and they had free popcorn, wich was a plus. There was only one bar tender for the whole place and she was doing a fantastic job getting to everyone efficiently. The beer was great and the price matched everything else. Great local brewery and bar. The only downside if you can even call it that was that it was a bit small but they did an amazing job at setting up extra tables in the back where the actual brewery was! I've come here a few times and it's been great. Today when I came, a cute little corgi was roaming inside off-leash, and eventually ended up near me and urinated on my foot. I was pretty bummed about it. A few minutes later, I discovered it was the bartender's dog, because someone complained that the same dog was disturbing other dogs, causing them to bark and get a little rowdy. I told the bartender (didn't catch his name, young guy with long black hair) that his dog peed on me and he laughed and said "That's funny." I didn't agree (maybe in theory but not in practice). I came here to relax and have a beer, not to get pissed on. This dude then just walks away, muttering under his breath "It's pretty funny..." No apology. Didn't even go over to clean the piss off the floor. Literally the worst customer service experience I've ever had. read more

I can appreciate the beers here because they are good quality, but not really my style. I like wheat beers or something with fruit undertones. Comfy tasting room with very helpful staff. We walked in 10 minutes before closing, but the staff didn't care as served us anyways. Also gave us a quick tour of the brew floor. Whooo-eee! That nut brown ale! I've been coming to this place since it opened two years ago, and it is a staple of our community. They not only have killer beer, they frequently host events and draw great food trucks to this neighborhood that otherwise wouldn't come. I like their trivia night, they did a cool benefit for the Birds of Prey center with real birds of prey there, and I spent my New Year's Eve at their Hop Drop. It was nice and warm and a great band performed. I love their dark beers, but I always look for places with gluten-free options so everyone can have fun, and they provide. They always have board games and bar games (like shuffleboard) available too, which makes it a great meetup spot as well. Overall, unpretentious, warm and welcoming, great beer. read more

This place has some great beer and. The people running the place are very friendly also. I've been here a few times now and just got beer to go since I'm just passing through. They always have a good food truck out front also. They had a really great taco truck there and I hope it comes back. But today when I stopped by there was a pizza truck. They need a better selection of toppings but in spite of it, then pizza they made me was fantastic and went really well with the beer I bought. We stopped by this sweet place on a Saturday. We had already eaten, so didn't get to take advantage of the food truck, but it's good to know they have food options while imbibing. The service was fast and friendly, but it was also pretty early in the afternoon. We sat at the bar and had a flight to test everything out, everything except IPAs, of course. The nut brown was exceptional, a solid go-to for anyone who likes a good beer. I was pleasantly surprised by the We Found the Village Burning rye wheat ale. I usually don't go for wheat ales, but this was a smooth surprise. The name, like the beer, is a mouthful. What would you shorten it to...Found? Village? Burning? We went here with my father in law when he was in town visiting and we had a blast. The selection of beers was great and the beertender was able to find exactly what my father in law wanted because of his beer knowledge and his ability to listen.
