5/5 for aesthetics and natural light, but a 3.5/5 for the coffee. I just felt like I got a little less than what the cup could hold and my drink was more milky than it was coffee. For the description of what the drink was, it fell short from the experience. It was a seasonal Japanese style drink with undertones of anise, ginger, and cinnamon, with some smokiness and a housemade syrup. My friend and I walked here after lunch and we were very excited to be at the original Madcap. We have one in Detroit and it is definitely not as cozy as this one. (The green really adds to the intrigue too) We took a little trying to decide what to get, and the barista was so nice helping us decide. All drinks landed in the $4-$6 range which was a pleasant surprise; with this, most offerings only came in one size though. The menu offered classic coffee and tea options as well as a small food and seasonal section. It surprised me to find there wasn't as large of an offering of flavors unless that is understood to be off menu requests. Our lattes were a little bit too cold for us when served but they tasted fine. We also ordered the spinach and feta croissant but they served it cold so the filling was very chunky. This place was an absolute delight. I had brunch at little bird which is right across the street so I was able to pop over and enjoy a cup of tea after. The place itself it's super cute from the inside out. The employees were very friends, the service was great. And the menu is legit. On top of their coffee selection they offered a lovely tea list. I've never had cascara tea before but if you stop in to this place I would highly recommend it. Madcap has always been my go to place for years. When I first started to get into coffee, Madcap was the first place I went to, and ever since then, I never stopped going. Their drinks aren't overly sweet, which l love. My go to is either their chai tea latte, cafe miel, or their vanilla latte with oat milk! They have a multitude of teas that you can choose from as well which are also just as delicious (it comes in a cute glass teapot)! They've also added matcha to their menu several months ago which is great for all the matcha lover's out there, including myself. If you want a little treat to go with your coffee, they offer products from field and fire as well as their own granola (which is delicious by itself or with milk) and cookies. Park on the street or splurge by parking in one of the many nearby parking garages. The space is spacious and well-designed. Tables, outlets and free wifi, it's an excellent space to work from if you can beat the crowds. The coffee is excellent if you know coffee. If you don't, it's a little more acidic than other coffees, but still good. Not loving more acidic coffee, I order the latte miel, brewed with honey. It's not too sweet and highlights the quality of the beans. It's pricey, but worth it for quality. read more

I've been excited to visit Madcaps flagship since first finding out I had to come to Grand Rapids. To be honest I've had to stop drinking espresso since the pandemic. It seems that when folks came back to work, they cared a little less about the craft and science behind pulling a delicious shot. Not the case here. Perfectly balanced, just the right temperature, the glass allowed for a nose full of rich smells and they present with soda water (a lost art some places). The baristas were a great balance of hip while maintaining a Midwest niceness. Bonus points for pulling a great shot at noon after the rain let up. We'd been tooling around for a couple of hours and all in our party agreed that a corner spot with outdoor seating was just the break we needed. The caffé latte was just perfect - the sweet spot between weak and bitter - and especially appreciated by the elderly imbiber. We shared two pour-overs: the local area code-inspired Six One Six and the Santa Lucia (described as a brighter varietal). Both were delightfully drinkable; robust and full-bodied without any hint of bitter, heavy-handed roasting. A win black and with a touch of cream. Our fourth, appreciated the large plastic cups for the filtered water. So thank you for that as well, Madcap. It was a very worthwhile fly-by, to be repeated. read more
