It is true, the time goes so fast, with many choices of things to do. The food here is first class, dining out every night, or in ones home. One rarely hears complaints here, only comments about how lucky we were to find this place. The staff attentive to our every need. Last week six of us got together for a Hawaii evening. We were all either born there or had lived there for a long period, such fun. It's so easy to do things like that. I plan a big party for my birthday, and reserving tables for any occasion is just done online. Imagine, a place where dozens of geriatric grandmas and grandpas are still enjoying life.     I am so happy that my Dad decided to move into the Forum. Because of this decision, he is more…read morephysically active, socially engaged, and on a healthier daily schedule with a better diet than he otherwise would be by staying in his own home (his original plan). While moving into a senior community was a big adjustment, my Dad has come to really appreciate it and generally, every resident I talk to seems very happy at the Forum (you should ask residents you see how they like it when you visit). Some of the other benefits I've seen about the Forum are: * Management and management structure - The Executive Director (Nancy is great) and her management team and the staff are friendly and genuinely care about the residents, the cleanliness of the facilities, and the service provided. Additionally, the Forum is a non-profit benefit corp and is run somewhat like an HOA where the owners/residents have the ability to substantially influence overall policy and items important to them (e.g. food, entertainment, services, etc.). One key difference from a normal HOA is that the owners have the time and desire to make this model work as it requires participation to do so. * The naturally beautiful setting of Rancho San Antonio that surrounds the Forum - While not everyone takes advantage of all the hiking trails, just being in nature provides a relaxing, healthy setting. This is quite different from some of the senior centers that are in more urban settings. * Health facilities, library, ample activity spaces, planned activities (movies, presentations, etc,) and excursions (off site), many grassroots activity groups...uhh a wood shop? keep things more interesting while the services free residents up from the daily challenges (cooking, cleaning, etc.) and give them more time to enjoy. * Full continuum of care - You start of in independent living in a condo unit or stand-alone villa. Should your health needs and ability to live independently change, they have skilled nursing and assisted living facilities right there as well as a new memory care facility (on a fee for service basis after you sell your independent living unit). * Very pet friendly with many folk owning dogs, cats, other critters and visiting pets welcome. * Resident happiness - Perhaps the most important gauge is that I'm still surprised at the general level of satisfaction I sense from the residents ... and I visit pretty regularly. If your family is looking into senior living communities, check the Forum out!

He had early onset Alzheimer's and went into memory care but we quickly realized that he was growing depressed and bored. So as long as a family member was present, he was able to join the assisted living group in their activities. It was okay at first. Myself, my husband and when my mom felt well enough, one of us was there from 10 to 4 to be able to have dad engaged. Soon that became an issue with toileting and he needed help being fed. They couldn't have us feeding him in the front dining room, it didn't look good on the fancy wrapped paper they presented themselves as. So he had to go eat in memory care with mush food, he didn't like and being fed fast because there was all of them to fed and not enough staff. He kept falling out of bed, his supply of wipes and diapers disappeared a few times from was a staff locked closet in his room. He started getting rashes from them not changing him, he wasn't being bathed. I got an order to stop a medication from his doctor that came to him at Belmont . The doctor handed the and their form filled out to stop his RX, they said they would dispose of his medication and put that in his chart. His pills were 90 days at a time and probably half left. He also wrote an RX for podiatry to come in to trim his nails. About two weeks rolled by and still no podiatry. Another week rolled by still no podiatry and id been asking. Always told the next day. Dads rashes got worse and I was noticing that the plates and forks and cups didn't seem clean. Final straw the Head med tech came up and told me dad needed a refill on the medication his doctor discontinued FOUR weeks prior. I called the county to report this and a few other things. They came out unannounced and blended in and saw their own extra things and sited them. I was only privy to what pretained to dad. So not changing him and bathing him caused skin rash and breakdown, not getting podiatry and for continuing a medication they were ordered to stop. Also for no hot water and that had been a thing for more then just the day the inspector came out. My heart breaks when I see these beautiful buildings, fancy and looking like a 5 star hotel. Knowing the majority are a motel 8 at nest on the inside. I moved him to a board and care gone where he was treated with love, dignity and respect. Bathed daily, more if needed..changed when needed. His skin healed, he always had a full belly at the table with everyone even though he had to be fed. None of his belongings disappeared and doctors orders were followed to a T. He died there, being loved and cared for from the moment he arrived til he left us. Pretty wrapped boxes means nothing. It is what's inside. Don't schedule appointments , drop in first thing in the morning, look around, smell the air, ask to go to memory care . It's more then likely tucked way in the back so nobody sees them, they are still human beings and deserve so much more. My daughter was young then, but saw the way change needed to happen and for the last 6 years she has worked in senior living. Her building isn't wrapped pretty, it's not for profit. But the love and caring and happiness inside is more beautiful then any wrapped up with a shiney bow places like Belmont look from the outside. A decade later thinking that I put him there breaks my heart. He deserved so much better.

    A few years ago, we moved our father into The Avant. He was reluctant to move out of his home for…read moremany reasons. He was there for over 50 years and it was a daily reminder of our mom who passed away a couple years earlier. But it was necessary as he was having trouble with stairs and was at an increasingly high risk of falling. The first few months were predictably difficult. But he quickly made connections with other residents and eventually started thinking of the Avant as home. He was treated so well by the staff. They were unfailingly attentive and thoughtful. They looked after him and cared for him better than we could've possible hoped. When his health took a bad turn or he fell, they were on top of it immediately. They contacted us right away and gave us thoughtful guidance at every step based on their considerable experience. Li Li, Trish, and the entire staff are very professional, knowledgeable and kind. The facilities are clean, modern, and well cared for. From what we heard from dad, the food was consistently great. My family and I highly recommend the Avant without any reservations.

Mom was worried they would have to go to "The Other Side," also know as the memory care unit. Other residents say things to scare them about this arrangement. Dad loved the swimming pool in the apartment living, but once he 'crashed' into another swimmer who yelled at him, he no longer swam. Thus, my mom was ready to move out and live in their own home. Dad passed away a year ago and Mom, who is 93, is happy to live in her home. For me, I live 3 hrs away and always worry. I wish she continued to live at the Avant. She is isolated in her home, doesn't have transportation, but is happy to walk to her downtown. She is of sound mind, so I don't have any say, but that doesn't mean I don't worry. The Avant is a place I would live in the future and now that Mom is on her own, I think she would be more receptive to making friends with the other residents.

A person looked into assisted living places for months. The criteria that fitted Sunrise best and why it was chosen included the following: geographic location, staff to client ration, cost, entertainment events, policy, food quality, friendliness of staff, cleanliness, available services and daily scheduled events. Pets allowed to live there was a plus. The food could improve, somewhat. Sometimes the dinners are quite fine. The stew meat, for example, could improve. It should be better geared to the elderly clientele. It appears that daily exercises take place. So do events which exercise the mind. I have never been turned down by a staff member. They were always there to assist. Someone mentioned that clients on wheel chairs crowd the front desk. The nurse in charge at the front desk handles clients who are in greater need of care and assistance this way. No blame there. If there is any long term negative experience mentioned by anyone, I would report it. So far, I've heard of none. If one goes to YouTube, one can find various videos mentioning Sunrise Assisted Living. If one looks for it, the CEO of the corporation can be seen. Most of the stories are about experiences people have or had with Sunrise. The story goes that the Dutch couple came to the U.S. to open up an opportunity to offer better care for a growing population of elders. It appears to me they have succeeded in doing a fair job of it. In my opinion.

Yes, it's a big corporation but the service levels are individual. I want to particularly call out the Reminiscence neighborhood/Memory Care and the team that works there. The residents are cared for but still treated as individuals who have capacity. It is a cheerful and sunny environment and the staff is supportive of families as well as residents . The Activities coordinator and the wellness team and the team in Reminiscence really go out of their way to support the residents and their families as well. It is easy to be overwhelmed with caregiving and it has been a relief to feel confident that my loved one is well looked after.
