Continuing our motorhome trip to escape the Texas heat, we are in Kakabeka Falls at Happy Land RV Park. We always ask locals and consult Yelp when looking for places to eat and have local/craft beer. We decided on Madhouse. It was a great experience. At first we weren't sure about eating there, so we sat at the bar to have a beer and look at the menu. The bartender was immediately cordial and welcoming. As we enjoyed a hazy IPA we struck up a conversation with her and looked at the menu. Another guy was at the bar and we struck up a conversation with him. The bartender and waitstaff seemed to know him well, so I asked if he worked there. He was the head chef. By the time we ate and left it was like we were old friends. Really enjoyed talking with them and getting some ideas for an early dinner. We decided to start with the beer cheese, nothing like I have ever experienced. It was very good and the pretzels were hot and fresh. An excellent appetizer. Then we split and order of tacos. Since the chicken tacos were a special of the day, we split an order of two and a side of fries. Does Canada celebrate Taco Tuesday? The tacos were excellent and a delicious twist on the ones we are accustomed to in Texas. We enjoyed the entire visit...food, beer, and conversation. I gave them each an American two dollar bill and they had never seen one. Win Win. I highly recommend this place. The bar became busy and cheerful, but not loud and boisterous. Our server was delightful and we loved the decor! Great pics on the walls! Dali, Heminway, Tom Waits, Hunter Thompson. The chicken tenders were the best I have ever eaten anywhere and i don't know what they cooked the wedge potatoes with but they were melt in your mouth. HH loved the sauted seafood pasta. In my opinion, MadHouse has the most attractive food menu for a pub restaurant in Thunder Bay. Good mix of healthy options like colourful & large salads and deep-fried pub food classics! Madhouse Coconut Shrimp (5/5) - fried super golden crunchy & the shrimp was tasty & pretty large ! Paired with a side of sweet chilli sauce, can't go wrong with that! Pancetta Wrapped Scallops (4/5) - another classic appy dish, nothing stood out but it was still yummy & cooked alright! Fish Tacos (2.5/5) - more batter than fish, couldn't really taste any distinctive flavours. Would definitely pass on this. Steak & goat cheese salad (4/5) - large & beautifully done salad! read more

We were just passing through and were looking for some good food and friendly service. Madhouse provided both. The food was great and the bar service was exceptional (by Zoe). Best sweet potato fries I have ever had and wonderful fish tacos. It we lived in Thunder Bay with all of our extremely nice Canadian friends this would be our regular watering hole! Being a vegetarian restaurant goer in Thunder Bay is not always the easiest. I've visited eight times now and based on most menus I've seen it seems its a town that loves meat, and pork in particular. But at Madhouse there are count them THIRTEEN vegetarian friendly items to choose from. A coup, really. From apps to mains, the veggie-saurus has legit options outside cobbling together a salad and side fries. My boyfriend and I just stopped in for a couple drinks and an app, so I can't speak to what much of the menu is like at this point, but I'll be back. For now I'll say the pretzel and beer cheese dip app was tasty. I'm a sucker for pretzels, and I like that it also came with crisp granny smith apple slices to cut the rich cheese. I thought the cheese dip would be melty and warm, but it was served cold. Just something to be aware of, but not something to dissuade anyone. They were also running a promo for one of their local brews the night I visited, with proceeds going to a local charity. That stuff always always gets a spot extra points in my book too. read more

I came here with a friend on a Thursday for a late snack and a place to sit and talk after the coffee shop closed. The atmosphere in here late at night is nice - dark, a little bit artsy, grown up, comfortable & casual, but not overly casual. I've been here during a lunch hour too, and the place doesn't fare nearly as well in the harsh relief of day light, but at night, it all works beautifully. Quite taverny. We sat in the smaller room at the front, which was nice in that it was a bit quieter, but was too damned cold sitting near the big windows. They had a little space heater going, which helped a bit, but not enough. The rest of the place was warmer. We ordered the pita with three dipping sauces (hummus, salmon & tzatziki) and the sweet potato fries. The food was good - very tasty. There was quite a fair amount of pita and the dips came in small cups but was more than enough - we ate all the pita and still had a fair bit of dip left over. The sweet potato fries were great - hot and slightly crunchy on the outside, perfectly cooked on the inside. They came with dipping sauce - I'm not sure if there was just two cups of one flavour or two different ones. The one I ate was a kind of limey mayo concoction? Very nice compliment to the sweetness of the fries. Service was pleasant & friendly. Thursday wasn't overly busy - enough people in there to be comfortable but it wasn't packed. Weekends, if you want a table get there early, as it does get packed - very packed. read more

I really like coming here, its nice and dark, has a atmosphere of intelligence about it(you know good conversations are happening), and the staff is nice and friendly. I do find some nights get very busy but for dinner or late night on a week day its perfect. read more

I went on a Saturday night with a friend and I was asked for ID after asking for water. The waiter explained they have to ask for ID. I thought he was joking at first. Anyway, we both ordered steak salad and it was very, very good. It was reasonably fast and put together perfectly. I live around the corner and regret I didn't go there sooner. read more

The madhouse is one of my favourite restaurants in this city. Not only is it close to home but the food is always prepared so well. I've never been disappointed with the food. Finding a seat on the other hand is always a challenge. Too bad it wasn't a tad bigger! I recommend going early if you want a seat for sit down meals. If you don't mind waiting a bit for a table then do so as the food is pretty much worth it. Very nice and relaxed atmosphere. Friendly staff with fair service and prices and some different types of beer on tap and some more well know ones for the less adventurous patrons. Not a lot of parking though but great for walkers. Will definitely go back to the mad house. read more

Too bad you can't give half stars. I'd give Madhouse Tavern and Grill 2.5 stars. The reason for the 2 star rating was because of how long the kitchen took to make the food. I was dining solo (work trip to TBay) so I didn't need time between the wine, the appetizer and the main course. It took about 25 minutes for the appetizer (grilled scallops wrapped in pancetta) to arrive and another 25-30 minutes for my main of blackened salmon. But I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. As I said at the beginning, I wish I could give them a higher rating. read more

Whats to say except this is a great place to go and relax and enjoy a cold beer and some good food. The service is always very good. Everything i have tried is very good. The quality can be a bit inconsistent at times though but when they hit it, its spot on. Prices are reasonable. 1 suggestion would be to change up the menu periodically though as competition is moving into the area and will surely take some customers away. read more

I visited the Madhouse while I was in town and it was under-whelming given the hype that was given by word of mouth and other reviews. It felt like a great local hangout with good drinks, atmosphere, and friendly service; but is not a destination to be had for food alone. I ordered an appetizer, which sounded good on the menu but was neither tasty nor presented nicely. Although I did not try the other 95% of menu items I probably would not go back unless to hang out with friends. read more

Always found the food overcooked. The beer from the taps does not taste the way it should. Finally, they grab a steaming hot glass from the dishwasher and pour the beer in it. Ruins the beer. read more
