Wasn't impressed with the food. Went there on my birthday, my meal was half undercooked and other side burnt. My accompaniment's meal was mediocre. The service was good, the price was sad for a food that could have been great. Ambiance, .... I got too watch some less fortunate people get into arguments, as I looked towards the Sleeping Giant, and eat a burnt piece of bread. But I did get a cookie with whipped cream for my birthday lunch. So I'll add 1/2 star for the waiter/waitress. Wasn't sure about the transition. read more

This is a funky little place. Not exactly what I expected, but so good. My husband had the SOV burger (bacon cheese burger extraordinaire) and duck poutine fries. He let me have only one bite, but it was a fantastic bite. When you can taste the quality of the beef AND the bacon jam, oh yeah. When I ordered "fried chicken" I wasn't expected boneless pieces, but it didn't matter what I expected. What I got was sweet, salty, crunchy, tangy and creamy. And pickle coleslaw? WOW. We are a long way from home taking a long road back. Yelp made no mistake in steering us to The Sovereign Room (gastropub). It's unassuming from the outside but very welcoming inside. Street parking was nearby (on a Wednesday night). Our server was attentive and recommended the Gnochi (vegetarian?), which was excellent. The Caesar salad was way better than average. We also had the Bigoli (chicken and kimchi sausage on pasta) which I would get again. We had an Oatmeal Stout from the local Sleeping Giant brewery which I'd also recommend, as good as any I've had. I wish I was good at remembering names as our server was first rate. However everyone we interacted with were welcoming and friendly. I even liked the music. I need it to be known that my previous review of the incongruities between the posted restaurant hours and the actual restaurant hours still need to be addressed. However, I've now had the opportunity to eat here twice and I'm actually quite a big fan of their "The Sov Burger" for ONE specific reason - because they let me switch out the thunder oak jalapeño gouda for gorgonzola dolce (I can't do spicy)! It's a personal preference but blue cheese melted on a juicy burger patty is just SO delicious, it makes me salivate just thinking about it. My boyfriend and I have also tried their Manhattan Strip Steak, which was also delicious because the steak was cooked perfectly to medium-rare and the accompaniment of fingerling potatoes and oyster mushrooms hit the spot, a Sov Deluxe pizza, which was just standard, and fried chicken, which tasted great and came in a fairly generous portion size. Some of the reviews mentioned this place was "too loud" or "too dark," I'm assuming they were boomers writing the reviews The atmosphere was a classy dive bar feel with great music. Our server was very nice and we were taken care of very well. The food makes this place 100% worth it. My boyfriend had a flatbread that was vibrant with flavor and fresh. We split the Nashville hot buffalo sprouts that were placed on top of a fluffy toast and they were my favorite thing. This place would fit in beautifully in the Ossington hipster strip in Toronto. Kitschy cottage style decor, good beer selection and incredible food. The menu is completely un-Thunder Bay, but clearly the locals are still digging on the food. Gigantic chicken wings, thin crust pizzas with interesting toppings and of course a duck confit poutine round off the best of the gastropub menu items. Fancy salads (ie. beet w/ butternut squash) and nice sounding pasta dishes came out of the kitchen with beautiful presentation and looking more like a fine dining experience. We were a party of 5 and sampled a bunch of things. My only minor complaint was the pizza crusts were too crunchy on the outside. Nice thin crust and great toppings (balsamic fig & prosciutto!) but just a tad too crunchy. Gastropub is such a bad name... I once had gastritis...uncomfortable. Anyway, the poutine here is a must have! It's exactly what the best poutine in Canada tastes like!! It's what all Americans must try when a Canadian friend says, "You've never had a poutine?! You gotta try one!" There's even a duck poutine option as well. Very limited menu. What we ordered was delicious. We shared several entrees - duck poutine, nachos & potatoes & kimchi. I also had the butternut soup. It was savory and topped with popcorn and toasted pumpkin seeds. We also had the fried cauliflower as an appetizer. It was amazing! Probably my favorite menu item. Sadly, there is almost nothing available if you are gluten free. So my husband would rate this place a 1 star. He had 3 choices - the lamb shank, pork chop with no gravy or nachos with no meat. That's it. He left hungry. My friend and I left stuffed. The portions on the poutine and kimchi are huge. Overall it was a good experience. Great service. I went here after work one day, and at first I wasn't sure. The decor made me feel like I was in my Grandpas basement or something, I decided I liked it! I sat sipping a glass of wine from the small wine list (my only complaint!) When my friend arrived we took a look at the menu and weren't sure what to order, everything looked so good! I would definitely say that they serve pub fare, but they have taken it to a completely different level, I would even go so far as to say that they have elevated it to an art form, but it is far from pretentious. Good for foodies and the meat and potatoes crowd. I split an order of the Poutine. Housemade fries with Thunder Oak Gouda curds, and gravy flavoured subtly with sun-dried tomatoes and basil. It was really good. For my dinner, I ordered the braised short ribs. The waitress warned me that shortribs arent regular ribs, which I was aware of, but I think that a lot of people would appreciate the warning, as it is a dish quite different from spare/loinback ribs. The shortribs were braised, and deliciously tender, but the thing that startled me, is that they had some kind of breading on the outside, something I would not expect in a braised dish, but delightful nonetheless. Served with a cauliflower puree and jus, it was quite nice. My friend ordered the dry cajun wings, and WOW. Amazing spice and good breading. The housemade ranch which accompanied them was wonderful. (When the wings were gone, I ate the rest of it with my finger, yes, it was that good!) All in all, I would reccoment this place to anyone or everyone! I checked this place out based on Kelly A's review and wasn't disappointed. We had the charcuterie platter, the poutine and the chicken bites - all tasty and all decent portions. The atmosphere was great and reminded me of restaurants I used to frequent on Main Street in Vancouver. I strongly advise writing down the address though as this place is hard to spot! I don't know Thunder Bay. I travelled through Thunder Bay once in the mid 80s while going to Vancouver by bus and it left an feeling of an industrial town, very far from anything. 30 years have passed and serendipity helping, I had a day off to wander here. My first instinct was to head downtown to see what was happening but before, I researched a bit the town maps and saw that downtown had to direct access to the lake... Being on a hot summer day in a city by lake Superior, I wanted to be by the water. Then I noticed this section of town called the "Waterfront District" and with quite a few placed with good ratings on Yelp and this is why I decided that I would make that part of town the core of my day here. I'm so glad I did! I can't speak for other area of town, but the Waterfront District is way cool. I first strolled along the marina and the surrounding park lined with skateboarder's area, water park, museums and a festival area. The neighborhood has cool young people walking around, arts boutique, tattoo parlors, cafe, restaurant and in a less cool note, a Ontario Casino and government building... well, it can't all be positive... So... by now you probably figured out that I did enjoy my day in that area of Thunder Bay and my impressions of the town has greatly evolved. And then I decided to enjoy a meal at the "Sovereign room" qualified as a "Gastropub". The sidewalk sign read as this: "Sunday Special Bacon & Parmesan Ravioli Carbonara made with Egg, Porkbelcy, onion, Garlic, Parm and chives. $18" Sounds delicious? Well, it was even better. Sublime. Pasta where fresh, perfectly cooked and the taste of the sauce and all the ingredient was perfect. I rarely tasted a pasta plate so good. I had a pint of local microbrewery stout that was also delicious it was the "Skull Rock Stout" from the "Sleeping Giant Brewing Company". Cool. The "Sovereign Room" managed to create a very comfortable setting. It's inviting and I could see myself spending hours with friends here. Service is convivial and attentive. Music level is enjoyable and the layout of this medium sized room allows for enough privacy if you feel like it. A perfect way of ending a great day in town and an overall perfect day in Thunder Bay. read more

This gastropub has an interesting décor including exposed brick and dark wood furniture with booths lining one side of this long narrow restaurant, ending at the bar. The bathrooms are found at the bottom of a steep, curved staircase near the entrance that splits. Men's is on the left, women's on the right. It's very tiny and covered in graffiti, but serves it's purpose. The sandwich board outside lists the specials, which tonight included Rabbit on Toast and a Ricotta Gnocchi Pasta. The menu has quite a variety of dishes with a gourmet flare at very reasonable prices. We were keen to try a bunch of the options like the Sovereign Burger, Jalapeño Empanadas, Chorizo and Sweet Potato Latkas, Duck Confit Poutine or the many Pizza options. We decided to try the Duck Confit Poutine and Spanish Pizza. At $11 and $13 respectively, we didn't expect the serving sizes to be substantial and thought we might order a 3rd dish if we were still hungry. But between the two of us, we could not finish the dishes. They were both delicious! Others in our party opted for the burger, served on a homemade bun that held together well. It was moist, well seasoned and described by a few of them as the best burger they'd ever tasted. It came with a plate full of fries and few could finish their meal. Another friend ordered Cajun Chicken Wings and a Caesar Salad. The chicken wings came on a huge platter with a small side salad and the Caesar Salad was served with a whole poached egg on top and a few strips of bacon. Both were very tasty and large portions. They offer a wide selection of beers and the waitress was very knowledgeable, helping patrons pick a beer that suited their tastes. I had the pea shoot salad, the buttermilk fried chicken, the spanish pizza, and the pasta of the day (which was amazing but I can't remember what was in it, only that it was pure deliciousness and that I should have ordered two of them.) I had the nachos, fig & prosciutto pizza, cajun and salt & pepper wings. I Liked the way the nachos were served - on a long rectangular dish rather than in a round clump. We had the pizza on a pesto base instead of tomato, and it was great. The dry breaded wings were some of the best I have had. The garlic dipping sauce was fantastic. Aside from the food, the service was great and I really liked the atmosphere. We were there Friday evening - it was a mixed crowd and everyone was having a great time. This is a 3.5 star review. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this place. Conversely, there's a lot right with this place. They have a great beer selection (mainly bottles), a small, but decent food selection, and the food is pretty good. The atmosphere is trendy/hipster but well kept. The reason the review is lower on the star scale is that it's the same. It's the same trendy pub you can find in any major city. It's got the same theme, the same vibe, the exact same formula. There's nothing that stands out about this place. For Thunder Bay this may be unique but overall there's just nothing different. Visited Thunder Bay on business and we chose to try this little place out for dinner one night. It's a cute little place, tucked below a sign for a Chinese restaurant (I'm guessing that was the previous restaurant?). Shout out to Bruce the cab driver - without him, we may not have found it. The service was very good and the menu was intriguing. It seemed like some pretty basic offerings, but we were pleasantly surprised: Nachos w/ chorizo - well done. Believe me, it's easy to screw up nachos. These were tasty, had enough cheese and lot of good toppings. Fried halloumi salad - this was AMAZING. I've never had halloumi b/c I wasn't sure if I'd like it (I can be fussy about cheese). Since I was sharing everything with friends, it was less of a commitment. This salad was delicious - acidic dressing, sweet apples, salty cheese. A+ Margarita pizza - this was also a surprise. Large, hipster resto in tbay. I ordered a double ceasar extra spicy... It came w/ two olives and a slice of lemon...kinda wished they were a lil more creative w/ their garnish but it tasted good. I was most impressed w/ their appies. Beet tartare and fried cauliflower were both super tasty. Beer tartare was really refreshing w/ the dill sauce and pistachios and chips. Fried cauli was drizzled in this green sauce. I was already full from all that but I also ordered the Thai beef lettuce wraps. It was good.. But it wasnt mind blowing. I could have done without the lettuce wraps. My coworker orders the noodle bowl which in my opinion was kinda like a vegetarian bimbimbap but with vermicelli noodles...she liked it...i thought it was def overpriced and kinda bland. I ordered 2 lbs of wings because of the reviews I saw. Went to pick them up got charged 10%tax for take out which I have NEVER seen b4. 2nd they told me the wings would be ready in a 20 mins and I had to wait for over 30 minutes. The wings were dry and not tasty. I ordered buffalo and an apple flavor. The buffalo was not spicy at all and the apple was ok. Over all I paid almost $30 for 2 lbs of wings which are the worse wings I have ever bought. The wings at double double would have probably tasted better but you live and learn. read more

Dropped in for a late dinner. I had a dish which was on special short rib on polenta. It was well prepared and tasty. The list of available beers is impressive and well considered. The biggest issue is that the decor should include some sound absorbing materials. Because everything is hard and sound reflective, the noise level is oppressive. Some cloth hangings etc. would help significantly and improve the overall experience. read more

The Sov has always been awesome. Haven't had the pleasure of eating or experiencing their awesome tap menu in a couple months, but have visited several times over the last few years. Duck poutine, awesome flatbreads an effective diverse menu, this place has been awesome since it's opened in Tbay. The taps and foreign lagers and various other advanced drinks and foods has always kept me coming back. Doesn't matter if your vegan, vegetarian or a straight up carnivore (like myself), this place will always give you a more personal, organic dish or experience. The menu always fluctuates and the atmosphere is something else. In my opinion, this place stared the downtown, independent food hustle Tbay needed. If your in the Port Arthur sector of Thunder Bay, check this place out. 5 stars. If only this place decided to expand to Fort William with a bigger location!! read more

We were in Thunder Bay on a Sunday and the first two restaurants we went to were shut. We came to The Superior for dinner and unfortunately were a bit disappointed. I had the Spanish Pizza that felt a bit thrown together without much thought. Edible but very unexceptional. My dining mate had the fish n chips and noted that the fish batter was soggy though the chunky chips were good. Atmosphere was very good, service was friendly and relatively prompt. Basically it's a bar that serves bar food, not a restaurant with a bar. Next time I'll go for beers alone. read more

This place was fantastic. Great old school hiphop playing, a very bumpin environment with locals coming and going regularly. The menu was awesome, allergy friendly and vegan options available as well. We ordered the fried chicken with honey and fries, and the steak lettuce wraps and both were TO DIE for !! I've been here a few times but usually just for a beer after work (great selection by the way) with a couple of appetizers. It gets filled up early and it can be a little too loud. But this time, we had a little more substantial fare and the food really is outstanding. We had the duck confit poutine, short ribs, a prosciutto and fig pizza and a dish that was shredded, seasoned pork formed into small disks and then deep fried.
