While visiting Madison for the week I knew this was going to be a definite place to visit and we were not disappointed! We went in on a Friday afternoon where it seemed to be a little busy for the few staff working. While the owner had said it would take a little while for our two sandwiches and one platter, it really took no time at all. We ordered a BLT (not pictured because it was THAT good), the Butter Baby, and the Nibbler platter of cheese/meat that we let them pick out for us. The bread on both sandwiches was buttery, crisp, and downright delicious. The cheese plate was equally as delicious and Monger picked out/explained everything on the plate. I wish I remembered what they were!! We paired the cheese with a local rose and a local IPA as this is a BYOB type of place. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable, the place was so cute, and the cheese was fantastic. We will 110% be back next time we're visiting!! read more

What a pleasant experience - a great find! We were traveling back from a fave farmers market and was enjoying the backwoods whe we realized we needed lunch. We stopped by our former, used to be, favorite stop and it was not be. We started to drive out and noticed tables sitting on the grass and hopped out and checked out the menu. What friendly folks! We ordered a simple salad with organic chicken, shredded, and a tomato soup. Delicious! We stayed at a local bed and breakfast and received a complimentary nibbler plate for two upon arrival. The choices were phenomenal and definitely not something that my husband and I would've known to choose. The shop has a large variety of different types of cheeses that nobody would get bored ever!! My husband and I have purchased cheese from here a few times when we have guests over and it is always top notch. The service and care they give to customers and their cheese selection is unmatched. This place is divine! The owner and her family work here and each of them is not just knowledgeable but make you feel like you are their most important customer. I go here with questions. I explain what the event is, type of guests (recently, longtime friends from Paris), menu. And then they provide options, tastings of different cheeses. For the Parisians, we went with an alpine cheese (so many flavors!), a Hudson baguette slathered with French butter, then a soft French cheese. And we added a delicious duck pate. I was just visiting friends who recently moved to Madison. They were having cocktails and the platters from this shop were the absolute best cheese platters I have ever had. We are currently taking a cheese trip through a portion of Connecticut and this was one of the stops, so glad it was! The shop itself is small and cute with lots of options for hints to buy to go or to enjoy there. There's indoor and outdoor seating. The service was extremely helpful and curious about our trip and shared suggestions and samples to help us find a wonderful cheese to go. We also tried one of the grilled cheeses they are known for, they said, and we were not disappointed. They get bread from a nearby bakery and we had the Rosemary Focaccia for our sandwich The Wise Green which was wonderfully crunchy and crisped on the very exterior and full of gooey melted cheese inside. They split it for us for easy sharing and it was delightful. I found the prices comparable to other high quality cheese shops which cheeses ranging widely and sandwiches around or under $10. Not bad at all, in my eyes. I'm a sucker for good cheese and this place didn't disappoint. UPDATE: I have since writing my review been back many times. My partner has come back even more and is recognized by the lovely staff. This place is one of our favorite places in the state. We bring all our visitors here. Just had a wonderful light dinner at the Madison Cheese Shop & Cafe. I had the chicken & avocado salad with the perfect homemade dressing. The chicken was tender and delicious and the greens were nice and fresh. I loved it. My husband had the grilled smoked ham and cheese on rosemary focaccia bread. He thought the flavors were perfect together. This is a lovely relaxed atmosphere place with seating in the back and outside. The owner is extremely helpful and nice and the workers love what they are doing. You can tell that the meals are prepared with care. We're definitely going back. We ate at one of the little tables in the back, where we could watch the staff crafting their creations. My wife had the grilled brie on rosemary focaccia, and loved it. I tried the grilled combination-cheese sandwich in rye with, at the suggestion of the manager, two fried eggs on too. The eggs were perfect, with rich yellow-orange yolks. 1st let me clarify from and address the 2 poor reviews below....People complained about price. Well you pay for freshness and quality. Then enter and were instantly greeted by 2 young gentleman working the counter. They shared the specials and made some personal recommendations bc we were 1st timers. The 4 of went with the Cheesey Chin, Country Mouse, Swamp Yankee, & the Mouse Trap. Every single one of the were incredible. A week later and we are still talking about it. I wish I could say the grilled cheese sandwiches are suburb, but I can't. I just wish they were a little more substantial and not as greasy. However they are stringy and gooey, as such they should be. The real standouts are the knowledgeable owner and the fact that she'll let you try any of the cheeses. You can tell she definitely knows her cheeses. This place gets bonus points for being the only cheese shop in town. As far as I'm concerned, the constellation of the bookstore, Willoughby's coffee and this cheese shop make the center of Madison's universe. The charm of this town centers on this triad, and the cheese shop and its sandwiches are essential. I've only been once and tried the Cheesy Chin, but it was the perfect pairing of sweet and savory, blending stilton with a drizzle of honey and serving it on a rosemary focaccia and layered with chicken for some protein and texture. More than that, the staff were extremely friendly and happy to walk us through an eccentric parade of cheeses, both mild and alluringly foul. This shop takes it's cheese seriously, with all the inventory of a Whole Foods, but with the passion of staff that actually know what each block stands for on the nose and tongue. It's a touch out of the way from the central avenue, but make the extra 50 foot trip - it's well worth it for a savory treat. read more
