I ordered the French dip sandwich. I always order no matter where I go but this was my fist visit here. I dipped my fried dip once into the au ju and it was pure grease. I took the rest home. then tried it without the dip but it taste the same. pure grease to my stomach. I ended up throwing up because of the grease and no other flavors. I have no issue with great foot as long as it doesn't tase like grease with nothing more to offer. the fries were great and the service but I would never recommend the food. not 1 out of 8 even came close to finishing their meal for my sons graduation. I am addicted to the portabella mushroom penne at Madrones and frequently order it either at the restaurant itself or for take-out (which they'll deliver directly to your car, out back). It's a very popular place, so it can be crowded and/or loud, but it's always a pleasant place to eat, even so, and I haven't had a single bad experience with the waitstaff. They've always been very pleasant and enthusiastic and entirely patient with any modifications I or my husband have wanted to make to the meal. The plaza that Madrones sits in has a lot of restaurants and other shops, so it can sometimes be a bit tricky to find convenient parking, but I'd say it's worth it! read more

I've eaten at this place since it opened. Very inconsistent with food and quality. I ordered the Mongolian pork chop with garlic mash and cabbage. Chop was good but the mashed were an inedible soup oh grease. Very disgusting to look at as well as taste. My wife ordered a Caesar salad with grilled shrimp. In the past the shrimp were appetizer size and came on 2 skewers. 3 each. This time the shrimp were about 30 popcorn shrimp that were poached and then one side thrown on the grill. I love this place because the waitresses are so extremely tolerant of my overly-demanding grandmother. That's why we always take her here (sorry, waitresses). Aside from that, the food is fantastic. Currently, they don't take reservations; they just have call ahead for a wait-list. I called the day before for a Saturday night 6:00 slot. There was plenty of room to sit in the waiting area, but we didn't have to wait the anticipated 15 minutes. We were seated at a booth in the bar section after about 5 minutes. It was cozy and a little on the dark side. At 6:00 I noticed that there were open seats at the bar, but by 7:30 they were all full. My husband ordered a Dogfish beer off the drink menu, but was told the restaurant no longer offered that particular one. We skipped the appetizers and went straight for the entrees. Service was excellent. We ordered the Seafood Explosion, fish tacos, and prime rib. The Seafood Explosion was a hit among the two guys who said it was very flavorful. The fish tacos were disappointing to my friend who always orders fish tacos whenever they are on the menu. She said there was hardly any fish. My prime rib was good but the au jus was very salty and overpowering. There was no horseradish sauce which was disappointing. For dessert, we ordered the peanut butter pie and the cheesecake. The peanut butter pie was light and delicious. The cheesecake was OK; it was supposed to come with fresh strawberries, per the menu, but it came with a strawberry sauce. Update: I ate there for lunch on a Friday midday and although the place was empty, there was about a ten minute wait. We were seated in the bar area at a table. Service was excellent. I ordered the Le Grand burger which was very good and very huge. It had to be eaten with a fork because it was too messy to be picked up. Our waiter was nice...but seemed inexperienced. He couldn't easily tell us about the beer choices. He had to go ask about some we inquired about. We ordered the fried calamari as an appetizer, it was a bit salty for my liking. The bread was warm and pretty good. My husband and I shared the portobello pasta dish and added grilled chicken. We ate at Madrones for the 1st time tonight. 15 minute wait on a Tuesday night (they will text you when the table is ready) staff was great. Drinks were great, waiter was knowledgeable and courteous) Food was very good. My burger was overcooked so I sent it back (ordered medium, came out charred and well done) I wasn't even mad. The fiancé ordered a 10oz crabcake (which had like no filler, was all lump crabmeat, seasoned perfectly) so we shared that. The manager promptly came out and offered me a prime rib to eat since we mentioned we were in a rush and didn't want to order anything in place of the burger. It came out fast and was delicious! Absolutely amazing and so tender. We will definitely be back. Oh ask for the rolls! They're soft yeast rolls served with sweet butter (pretty sure it's buttercream icing haha) but it's so good and a nice change read more

For this California/Texas boy, heading back to Baltimore from a long day at Gettysburg, I was excited to read all the gushing reviews about this place and to bite into a nice, juicy ribeye. The wait on a Wednesday night wasn't too long, so I waited to be seated. Maybe it was an off night for them or something, because when I was led to my table, it hadn't yet been cleaned. I'm not sure why sweet butter is a thing, but apparently some people like it. With steak, I prefer salted butter on my bread. Whatever, though. The bread and butter were good for what they were. The Caesar salad was very good, except the sun-dried tomatoes tasted like they just came out of a can and made my tongue itch. Again, minor. I enjoyed the crabcake quite a bit, and the grilled lemon accompanying it was a nice touch. When I asked Barry (my very good waiter) if the ribeye was hickory-grilled like the other steak selections , he assured me that it was. I grill almost every chance I get at home, and I love to try steaks others grill also. This one didn't taste grilled. It was cooked medium rare exactly, but the bottom was charred, and the top was tender. I would swear it was pan-seared on one side and then baked. The cut also had a lot of sinew in it, which the provided knife had a difficult time hacking through. The herbed butterball on top was pretty good, but I prefer a steak that stands on its own with just a bit of salt. It was a large steak. That was good. In fact, about a third of it is sitting in my fridge for tomorrow's dinner, along with the mashed potato I didn't even touch because I was so stuffed. The atmosphere is pleasant for a date night or a party, and the staff is friendly and attentive. Madrones is about what I would expect from a restaurant, but not much more. Oh, I should mention that they do have a very interesting seasonal small-batch local craft beer selection. Mad Elf by Troegs Brewing out of Hershey, Pennsylvania looked intriguing, and I was not disappointed. They have an extensive wine and spirits list, but I still had a bit of a drive ahead of me, so I posted for a beer. I should also add that it's nice that they serve beer in 5oz, 12oz, and one bigger size, so you can have a small beer with your meal if you're driving. The 5oz was perfect with my steak. All in all, I would go back. Maybe i was a bit disappointed because I'm just too used to Texas and Argentine grilling (my parents are from Argentina). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, however, as the bathroom was clean and the staff is great. read more

I can say that the filet mignon was really good with just the right amount of seasoning. But everything else was just ok. My partner order a seafood dish that wasn't something we would order again. Caveat to review: They were super busy and it was evident they were overwhelmed when I was here for lunch. Saw several patrons upset about the slow service, but everyone I saw was working incredibly hard to keep pace, possibly just understaffed. Decent spot. Sat at the bar when I didn't want junk fast or fast-casual food. Bartender very friendly when she had a moment to breathe. Had the Maryland Crab Soup, pretty good but wayyyyy too salty. I get that this is a salty soup in general, but it was a bit overwhelming. Like I said though, pretty good overall and you could tell the ingredients were quality. Had the Blackened Salmon Salad for the entree. Same story here, good but nothing special about it. I like that the dressing was pre-mixed, although I didn't particularly care for the flavor of the dressing. I like my salmon a little more dry on a salad, this one was kind of 'slimy' (although that's a terrible word to use because it really was a good cut of fish), but that's just a personal preference. The initial attraction is that they serve food late on weeknights. A group of friends ride MTB or road after work and there are limited options in Frederick for good food (and beer) after 9pm. Madrones has a nice craft brew selection on tap, but always have North Coast's Old Rasputin on nitro so I don't often venture to try the others. My friends have and tell me there are usually 3-6 solid beers to try and many others that are good just not styles that they prefer. Just had the worst experience ever at Madrones in Frederick! (Update: it was the owner!) Heres the story: I order a steak, the "cowboy cut ribeye". My boyfriend orders the exact same thing (he also gets this same steak every time we go to madrones, roughly every 2 weeks). Waitress comes out with 2 steaks that look beyond different. (I know all cuts are different but wow I should have taken a photo, you'd laugh) I try it and say "they gave me the drunken ribeye". Years ago they made the same exact mistake with my boyfriends meal. We kept going even after that as well as the time we sat and never got wait on, had to ask to move to a different section and someone wait on us there. Anyway he tries my steak and I try his, which tasted completely different... Duh. I calmly say I think I got the drunken ribeye instead of cowboy, waitress says ok and walked away with it... Instead of simply fixing their obvious mistake, the waitress comes back with my incorrect steak along with a manager. She keeps saying it has to be the cowboy cut because 2 white picks were shoved into it. ok. Shove 2 picks in an apple is it a cowboy ribeye now?? They come up to us at different angles, literally felt like an attack. Manager keeps saying he KNOWS theyre the same based on his vision. Hes loud and in my face, standing over my shoulder, the waitress keeps saying she's just trying to "figure it out" or whatever, hes saying "I just dont know what u want" Um I want the steak I ordered and for you guys to back up. We have had consistently unsatisfactory experiences with Madrones our past few visits, and we now will stop patronizing Madrones altogether. What once was affordable and enjoyable restaurant, has turned into incredibly overpriced meals, with hour + long wait times, and poor service. On our most recent visit, we were emailed a survey about our experience. We shared how the lunch special menu (which used to feature lunch portions for 9.99) no longer exists, and some of our favorite sandwiches are no longer offered. We also commented on poor service. Someone at the restaurant, by the name of "Chip" responded by asking if we were "aware" of the raising of minimum wage and that they had to keep up with competitors prices... he suggested we visit again should we be able to fit it in our budget -- excuse me? If a restaurant asks for feedback, it should not be met with a completely uncalled for, unprofessional, and blatantly rude response. We will not be visiting Madrones again. Please do yourself a favor and visit another restaurant in the area for a more pleasant dining experience! read more

Madrones hit the spot! A classic american food restaurant that is done right. Hickory burger, steak, salad, 5 nut brownie, salmon- everything is great!! The bread that they bring you is soft and yummy. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the $7 glass of wine menu was. I love the low lighting and booths inside, it feels intimate without being stuffy. Great for a date night! I have also heard great things about their brunch, I can't wait to try it! The only reason I give them 4 instead of 5 stars is because I don't like their fries. But everything else is great! read more

I wish I could give a 5 star rating because my food was very good. Both my husband and I had the lunch special crab cake with lobster bisque and chop salad. All was very tasty and presented beautifully. BUT our big problem was with our waitress. She was rude from start to finish and definitely had an attitude not becoming anyone serving the public. Unfortunately rude waitstaff ruins a meal. To top it all off when our bill came the price per meal was $2 over what the menu said. You guessed it I got attitude for even questioning it. Also, the beer sizes we ordered were not the ones we were served or charged for. They were supposed to be the same size but I got a very large glass and my husband a small glass. I've wanted to try this place for a long time so we decided to go for Sunday brunch. The atmosphere is clean and cozy. I called the night before to ask if I needed a reservation and to check when they started serving alcohol. I was told 10:00am. We got there at 10:00am and were told they don't serve alcohol until 11:00. :-/ well ohh well no bloody Mary's with my brunch. I ordered the eggs Benedict Chesapeake but I received the eggs Benedict with bacon :-/ I asked for the waitress to correct my order and they did. The eggs Benedict Chesapeake was not bad, very flavorful. One egg was cooked perfectly one was over cooked and didn't run at all. The waitress was very nice and apologetic and they did not charge us for the eggs Benedict however, I was disappointed overall. I may try Madrones again later down the road. read more

Server recommended one of the specials, of course he said it was great. So I ordered the special. My boyfriend ordered a burger. It seemed to take a long time for our food to come out, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt just hoping it was fresh burger and that's why it's taking so long. The special I got was the steak rolls with aged prim rib. We got our order and it was 2 burgers... so I waited a while longer for my order. They were not impressive. There was two, size of regular egg rolls, each cut in half. They were soaked in grease, you taste ALOT of grease. Tasted like frozen steak umms meat with hot peppers. Finally got a refill on my tea. It was in a cracked cup so it leaked all over the table. We couldn't find the waiter to immediately tell him so just wrapped a napkin around it. Paid about $50 to get my food wrong and half a drink. And when I did get my food it was not good. The shrimp appetizer was good okay but the shrimp were clearly overcoooked. They were very chewy. This review is based on their Curbside service. Our orders were tightly packaged and double bagged to prevent leaking from the au jus ordered to accompany a steak. The lady bringing our order to the car was extremely friendly and positive. Silverware, napkins, and sauces were included making this Saturday night dinner experience easy. Madrones even offered a special menu that included many items from the regular menu at a discounted rate since the menu was limited due to the pandemic. The lighting is a bit dim, just a heads up for those like myself who don't see as well in the dark. I had the martini Bellini and the mimosa, $3 drinks!! The mimosa was my favorite, it doesn't have be usual brunch special cheap champagne and Sunny d flavor, it tastes like GOOD orange juice and mid level bubbly. The martini Bellini was good, but a little heavy on the artificial peach flavor. Possibly the peach schnapps in it? I ordered the traditional eggs benedict, which comes with a side of breakfast potatoes. It was delicious, although my potatoes were a bit cold when they arrived. The hollandaise sauce was perfectly creamy and had good flavor. Had the potatoes been a little warmer, they would've been better but the seasoning on them was good. The food is amazing, the service is great and this is my favorite restaurant but after our experience last night we will not be back until Covid is over. I would have been more comfortable if the staff were wearing masks, but I realize that is not a current mandate so that is a more personal concern. Both very good. Main dishes included steak, salmon, penna with blackened steak and the seafood explosion. Entrees were served with wonderful warm rolls with honey butter. I got the French dip which was cooked perfectly. The meat was thinly sliced (which is how I like it) and piled on. My husband got the crab cake sandwich which he said was amazing and the coleslaw was just right. We wish our waiter would've been more attentive as several times our drinks needed to be refilled. We also sat at our table and watched our food sit for awhile under the hot plate until he finally came around to grab it for us. It was a Sunday night, so it wasn't extremely busy. However, they have changed the atmosphere playing more " popular music" louder than whatever genre was played prior, I do not recall but it was in the background. Food was really good now ok. We always enjoy our meal here. The restaurant and atmosphere is very nice and cozy. Our food always comes out hot. They serve bread first which the kids love. I usually get a seafood dish. The seafood explosion, crab cakes, and salmon are all good. The shrimp and grits are spicy! I didn't enjoy that. The burgers are delicious. The kids meals have large portions. The drinks that I've gotten from the bar were good. The wait staff is not extra friendly. I wish they would expand the menu. The menu is very limited. I would love more options.
