Maggie's Cake Shop deserves 10 stars, two thumbs up, 10/10 would highly recommend. I have zero experience or knowledge into finding bakeries that specialize in custom and novelty cakes. I was searching for an affordable bakery to cater my grandfather's 100th birthday so finding a bakery was no easy task. I requested for a quote for a two tiered cake as well as sheet cakes that would feed around 150-175 people. They were very responsive and helped me decide on cake flavors with filling combinations that would complement each other well. I was very specific with the style and design of the cake and they offered suggestions that made the cake look like a showstopper on the day of the event. I provided inspiration photos and was in constant communication with them over the course of a week. The cake topper was a custom Rice Krispy Treat that made the cake look as regal as the event was. With all their design suggestions taken into consideration, I trusted their vision completely. I opted to get two of their most popular cakes and fillings for the display cake: chocolate with Oreo cream and carrot with cream cheese. Both were insanely delicious but the chocolate with Oreo cream cheese takes the cake, no pun intended. For the sheet cakes, they allowed me to choose one cake flavor with up to two different fillings. I chose marble (chocolate and vanilla) with mixed berries and marble with bavarian cream. Both were a hit and we ran out of cake very quickly. If you have no experience looking for custom cakes, look no further. I will look into Maggie's again for our next family event! read more

I definitely do not recommend them due to the fact that the cake I ordered which cost me $235 had some type of cardboard in the middle of the cake, I was never made aware of this either through text or emails which we had communicated by, as we were cutting we noticed it was though but just taught that the filling had hardened since it was in the fridge for most of the day, so some of my guests got slices with the cardboard until they told me that there was cardboard inside, I was so embarrassed! When I sent emails and texts discussing this they were unapologetic and their reason being that it was a 2 layer cake so the cardboard was to hold the cake ... I've ordered 2 layer cakes from other bakeries and that's never been the case but if so they should definitely made me aware of this so that I know and my guests wouldn't have ended up with this in their food. Their customer service regarding the issue Is horrible nothing done to repair their mistake not even an apology or anything matter of facts they just stopped communicating... I placed an order for an ice cream cake and maybe I just overlooked it but I didn't see an option for the different option for the color of the cake and the message that was to be put on the cake. They promptly responded to emails and even offer delivery! We ordered a vanilla cake with chocolate mousse filling, which was delicious. Believe it or not, the cake looked even better than it tasted (it was Dragons Love Tacos-themed!). It was exactly how we envisioned it. We specifically did not want fondant, and Maggie's still managed to make the buttercream frosting look clean and smooth. My wife's favorite dessert is ice cream cake, so we wanted to try and find someone who could create a large ice cream cake that might also be kind enough on the eyes to display at our wedding. With met with Maggie to taste her cakes, and settled on chocolate cake with mint chocolate chip ice cream for one tier and cookies and cream for the other tier. We arranged for Maggie to drop it off at our venue in North Park on the day of the event - our venue was a small place and didn't have a freezer large enough to hold the entire cake, so we had to have it dropped off shortly before serving it. I was worried about how this would go down, but Maggie's husband (I think that's who he was?!) showed up right on time and brought the cake right in. We cut it 10 or 15 minutes later. Unfortunately I did not have the same satisfied experience along with rest of Maggie's customers. I was also searching for a highly rated cake shop for my daughters 4th birthday and I came across Maggie's cake shop. This review is no intent to be malicious but my own experience with my cake order. I contacted the business number and sent a sample picture Moana theme birthday cake to see if they can replicate it. After reviewing the sample picture they said yes they can make it. I also requested if they can make cake less sweet and what to recommend to make less sweet. Maggie's shop replied "vanilla cake with "fresh strawberries" for filling. I was excited , it sounded like a great idea and agreed to place an order along with a deposit. In my mind when I don't often order specialty cakes when someone says "fresh strawberries" I am thinking of fresh fruit. Fast forward 3 days later I contact Maggie's cake shop again thru text and ask " if using fruit for filling someone had advised me that it can make the cake slide and not recommended is that true? because I don't want cake to slide" , Maggie or the assistant replied " no we are in charge!"(basically not to worry). So I am thinking maybe they know a way to make a cake with fresh strawberry fruit so it won't slide.. I have seen other cakes with whole fruit as filling from other bakeries before. Fast forward another few days the day of my daughters birthday and cake to be delivered...I received a text saying the cake is scheduled to be delivered at 10:30am. My party is at 12 noon and the cake is late and actually delivered at 11:30am. Cake is finally delivered and I did not take a close look it when it was handed to me because I was in a rush considering it was almost 12 noon. When i took out the cake from box, the cake had black skid marks on top, and side of cake facing back of box had a huge egg size lump on side of cake, that's probably why the cake with lump was positioned toward the back of the bakery box. I was embarrassed looking at it hoping no one at party noticed the imperfections. After cutting the cake the filling was not "fresh strawberries" but a strawberry frosting mix. Vanilla Cake was dense texture and filling was still sweet. As for taste wise it wasn't that great for the price I paid $125 plus $15 delivery fee. I was not happy at all and other party guest had mentioned same thing "too sweet." Over all I was not happy, the fact that who ever made the cake should have corrected and not deliver a cake to a customer knowing there are black skid marks. Along with a huge lump on side and filling was just a strawberry homemade frosting. I notified Maggie shop next day and they offered me a $20 refund for the mishap. They also said next time don't except cake when delivered like that. But I had no choice because the cake was delivered at 11:30 and my party was at 12. If I rejected the cake my child would end up with no cake. Regardless a cake final product should not been made and given to customer like that especially paying premium price. A cake is the centerpiece of a party. The cake should have been perfected more. :( I included a picture of Moana theme cake made by Maggie. This is my fair and honest review of Maggie's Cake Shop. I was looking on Yelp for highly-rated bakeries in the South Bay, and this shop resulted with an avg 5-star rating. So I placed an order on her website for a Spider-Man themed birthday cake to feed about 20-25 people, a week before the date of the party. I got a text message from Adrian (Maggie's assistant?) just after midnight that same evening, confirming that he received my cake order online and requesting photo ideas of what I would like the cake design to look like. The next morning, I replied to his text and included a couple photos of what I had in mind--just a single tiered cake with fondant design in the blue and red spider man theme. I never heard from Adrian again. Fast-forward to the day before the birthday party...there was not one single call, text, or email from Maggie or Adrian about my cake order, pricing, or invoice. Obviously, I am worried--I can't have my 4-year-old son NOT HAVE his only birthday request. Maybe it's my fault for giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming they had it under control. I decided to call Maggie to check on her progress. She answered (it's her personal cellphone number, not a business line), and she had no idea who I am or that I even placed a cake order a week ago and am expecting a delivery tomorrow. I forwarded her my text correspondence with Adrian, then she replied back and confirmed with me that Adrian never informed her of my cake order. She was apologetic and offered to make my cake anyway. She told me to expect the cake around 11am the next day. On the day of the birthday party, Maggie was running behind apparently. There was no cake at my door at 11am, so I texted her at noon to check on her status--and, yes, she's sorry she's running late. We didn't receive the cake until 1:30pm. The cake looked nice, considering it was a rush job and likely made that same morning. But the taste and texture of the cake was average, to me--not quite the 5-star rating I had anticipated, and definitely not worth the price I paid for the cake. I was underwhelmed. Maggie probably would have done a better job if she actually knew about the cake order and had time to plan for it. My advice: deal with Maggie directly (if you decide to go with her bakery), and follow-up like a bugaboo! read more
