Was nearby and was craving something sweet. My husband looked around online and found this place. What a wonderful little gem! It's a small place with a few tables but SO MANY options. We tried almost one of everything including their donuts, baklava, cookies, and flan. The baklava was absolutely wonderful. Could foresee myself getting lots of these for a party. Their cakes are also huge and gorgeous. Will definitely think of them for future parties I will be having. All in all so many options, so many gorgeous food options, and so many tasty options. Will absolutely be returning. Also their service was phenomenal. Plenty of parking as it is in a mini strip mall with lots of parking. read more

I challenge others to find a better selection of baklava in the area. Flavors were all light but distinct for each type. Constructions were spot on and highlighted classic flavors. Only "criticism" may be to suggest experimenting with new flavors - teas tend to pair well, and could create a nostalgia all on their own. *Note, this place is now called Cakey Bakey but the sign still reads Balboa Bakery and is listed as such on Google Maps. Very slow morning when I came in - but it was also very early. There is an entire baklava case, and a case dedicated to some other desserts like Napoleon's, tiramisu, and roulades. Everything is priced per weight. Tiramisu was really just a simple sponge with a light cocoa and coffee flavor. Mascarpone cream is very light and layering is precise and clean. Could have a more soaked texture. Baklava (primary reason for rating and staple of this place) were all delicious and each had great flavoring, balanced in texture and sweetness. Would come back here for the baklava only. read more

This place caught my eye when I was recently going to the International Market. Their storefront name is, Balboa Bakery, so that did throw me off a little because their Yelp name was different when I looked them up on Google. I decided to check them out anyways, and I'm glad I did! The shop is small, but there are 2 display cases with a lot of different goodies and a couple seating area. Right when I entered, I was greeted by a really friendly lady who explained to me that I could mix and match whatever I wanted from one of the cases and it would be $19.99/lb, but I could do half a pound of whatever I wanted. I got a whole bunch of different things to bring home, from almond flower cookies, to pistachio baklava to Turkish delight. The Lady was beyond patient with me as I went through the options offered lol. Everything I got was really delicious! I tried the pistachio baklava right away and it was so flaky and the honey was sweet but they did not overdo it which I appreciated. The cookies had a really good base and were not too sweet. The Turkish delight was, well, delightful lol. While she rang me up, I asked if they were a part of the International Market next door, and they are not. They are their own small business, which I loved and will be back to support soon! read more

My daughter was at the store across from this bakery. So, my son and I saw bakery sign and wanted to go try a new treat. I just wanted to try one thing. The elder lady said "do you have cash", I said no. She said "I can't do that". I get the concept of a minimum purchase. However, I was bummed. I wanted to try a new sweet treat. There were no signs either, stating that. Service 0/5 If I could give this place a no star I would. The elder lady was rude, not professional, dismissive, or helpful whatsoever. If you want new customers that is definitely not a way to gain them. Horrible service and very disappointing that my review isn't based of an actual item from here, because I didn't get the opportunity to try anything. read more

Went there for the second time, not realizing the name has changed. But I was craving some persian pastry and had no choice. Great service, very clean, and nice selection. The only problem is the taste amd texture. They are just not right. There is nothing wrong with them. But if you have been living where you had the pastry before, then you will feel the difference. Cream puffs are great. But they are like cream puffs I leave in the fridge for three days. So does the pirashkis. Napoleon's layers are kinda mixed up. Sholezard taste great and is just right. I hope they try to make it authentic. Having said that, may be they are baking for the customers who prefer what they have. I can say. I just miss a perfect persian bakery in San Diego. read more

I always come here to get the napoleon cake which is just so delicious. Haven't tried any of their other desserts (they all look so good) but the napoleon cake ALONE is 5/5. The owners are super sweet as well & are extremely welcoming. It's a small shop but it's clean and very well kept. I would recommend! read more

First time at this awesome Persian coffee shop/bakery. Very friendly and welcoming customer service. Incredible assortment of sweets. The girl there told me they were not overtly sweet which is exactly how I like patisserie. The eclairs were as good as people commented here on Yelp. My favorite item was the Persian Neapolitan so flaky and with pistachios. My boyfriend and I shared that one, so good. The cream puffs are equally amazing. Super satisfied and now just can't wait until I go one day to have coffee seating there with a friend. Such a pleasant and cute store. read more

I spent hours looking for the perfect bakery to make my 25th birthday cake, and Cakey Bakey was it. The selling point for me was the aesthetic numbers cake. I gave them a call about a month in advance, texted over all of the details/specifications of what I wanted, got confirmation for pickup a couple days before, and picked it up early than I even anticipated. It came out amazing, and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone! I did their bestseller napoleon cake and it was so solid! Other options include vanilla and chocolate, which I'm sure are also fantastic. I don't like things that are too sweet, which American cakes tend to be, so I so very much appreciated that this sweetness level was just right. The vanilla cream was also so fluffy yet not overwhelming in flavor at all. I had sent over some requests and ideas for the toppings to match the theme and my overall sweets preference, and she delivered! Everyone loved the cake and I'm so happy with my decision to get it from here. It's located in the plaza off Balboa with consistent signage and is actually under Balboa Bakery or something of the sort instead. Service, again, was excellent. Price was fair, and it served 30 people with leftovers. read more

My first time using this bakery. Wow, I was very impressed. I needed a special carrot cake for my grand daughter's Sweet 16 party. I sent a picture of what she wanted. They knocked it out of the park. Not only was the staff soo nice but the cake was absolutely delicious. I also bought a Cream Puff Tower for my sons birthday the day before. He does not like cake soo I thought this would be a nice option. He loved it. They were really fresh & good. All the staff in the restaurant kept coming to get a cream puff. It was a big hit. Can't believe I wait this long to stop inside & get a few tasty treats for me. Right before COVID- I changed dental offices & Cakey Bakey is two doors down. I've noticed the pictures on their windows and told myself- "Someday..." Well, I figured after my tooth got pulled out & had to get a temporary- I'm gonna need something soft to nibble on, right? The display case isn't overwhelming & the what's offered is simple. I decided on slices of tiramisu, cherry/ vanilla cake, mocha roll, & pistachio baklava. I hate sitting in traffic- I mean, who doesn't, right? So, with the side of my face numb from Novacaine- I decided to let my mouth soak on a piece of baklava as I'm doing a slow roll in afternoon traffic. Minimal chewing, and it just hit the spot. I'm still enjoying my little treats with morning coffee or even as late night snacks. My whole purchase came to $17 and it was worth every penny. Every piece of cake was moist & soft. read more

I think I just discovered my new favorite cake! Banana pistachio cake!!!! Yum! I found this bakery through Yelp, when you are arriving to the store, its actually called Balboa Bakery so don't look for Cakey Bakey. I got a few items. Banana pistachio cake, Napoleon and baklava! They were all SOOO good. It cost me $12 and some change. Very friendly staff. I will be definitely coming back here! Plenty of parking space also ! read more

Nice location. Lovely store. Friendly people. However, the pound of butter cookies I purchased were not good at all! I specifically asked if the cookies were made with butter. I was assuming they were. I couldn't tell for sure. There might have been a little butter in the recipe, but something less costly was substituted for it and the result was dry tasteless cookies. For $20/lb they should have been excellent. I couldn't eat any more after sampling 4-5 from the box I brought home. I should add that the cookies, as well as all the desserts, looked great. This is my go to place for paklava in San Diego. I give it as gifts, and take it to meetings, events and family dinners. What I appreciate is that Mariam has many different versions of paklava - diamond shaped, rolled, walnut, pistachio. She has many other excellent Middle Eastern and American pastries, too -- as well as a great selection of gluten-free cookies: coconut, walnut, chickpea, rice cookies and more. Okay, but I don't think I have ever had eclairs like this in my LIFE. I am so obsessed. The desserts were delicious. We went with friends and there wasn't anyone who did not like their food. I wish they had more coffee and tea options but dessert wise, everything is amazing. I can't wait to break my diet for another delicious treat. I'm glad I discovered this place. It says balboa bakery on top so it was a little hard to find. I didn't notice it until I found it on yelp. Parking is plenty. Service is amazing. I think I finally found my forever bakery! After having throughout the year's birthdays, weddings, graduations and any other celebration I could possibly think of to have a beautiful cake at i've gone through quite a bit of bakeries. It was my daughter's birthday and she wanted a Harry Potter theme cake. The cake turned out beautiful and most importantly was delicious and moist. My daughter couldn't have been happier!!! This place is a hidden gem that I can't believe I've been driving by for 6 years now. It's a small and humble looking bakery with a small selection of baked goods but the quality is great and I prefer have a small selection of delicious desserts of a vast selection of ok quality baked goods. I tried their napoleon cakes first and it's perfect. The combination of their flaky layers and the cream is to die for. I love how it's got a good balance where it's not bland or too sweet. It's perfect to have with a cup of tea. I went back recently to also pick up the bollet, mocha cakes, and cream puffs and am not disappointed. Looking forward to many more visits to this location for my dessert fixes. Another thing I wanted to highlight is how nice the bakery owner is. She's always super helpful and even though I arrived a bit before opening, she still welcomed me in and prepared my order. Can't wait to go back for more! read more

This is a review Jose had- When I looked online, The bakery at first glance, shows great cakes and designs. Which made me come in to place my order. The complaint I have, is that those cakes advertised and shown online are not what I experienced. Don't get me wrong, the people were nice, but very unprofessional and not at all organized. I had a few issues with my whole experience. Here is my breakdown: So I came by on Friday, Aug 7th in the morning around 10:30am to place my order. Maryam took my information, ideas and details on what I wanted the cake to look like. I asked her if it would be ready by Monday, Aug 10 at 2pm. Which I imagined it was plenty of time, approximately 4 days in advance. I called to check in on the order and she totally forgot about it, mentioned that she was busy. Honestly I feel if I hadn't called to check on my order, she wouldn't have had the cake ready for me... I cannot believe I had to remind her. Upsettingly enough it wasn't even ready when I stopped by, which was about 2pm, she then asked if I could come by in about 2 hours. Another issue I experienced was she completely forgot to put the main reason I was getting the cake "Happy Birthday Alice" !! The cake also didn't look like anything I asked her to create. I have attached 2 photos. One of what I expected (with different colored flowers and some other little details added) the other what I got! make matters worse she said the image was edible- it was not. She definitely half assed my order. To be honest, the flavor overall on the cake was good. The main reason for my negative review, was that she could not follow the simple instructions and the timing was awful. I did not feel valued customer what so ever. read more

I never met a dessert I didn't like...until today. We are adventurous eaters and love all sorts of food. We tried 7 different desserts: 2 different Turkish delights, 2 type of zolbia, baklava, tiramisu, and the almond cake. We didn't like a single item. Truly unheard of. The tiramisu was not even soaked, the cake layers tasted like straight wonder bread out of the bag. read more

This bakery has been bookmarked in my Yelp for months! I finally had the chance to try it out. The employee kindly welcomed us into the store and I told her we were in need of a small cake. I ended up choosing the vanilla whole rollout cake and it did not disappoint! Im giving 2 stars, because she was very very nice. Its a cute shop. But, for a 150$ cake we weren't happy! Unfortunately the cake was just....ugly. It looked nothing like the photo we gave her for reference. The top layer of the cake was uneven and unstable. We asked for a white cake with fruit because the mommy to be is allergic to chocolate! The entire cake was lined with chocolate! We didn't have the heart to tell her the day of- but we were embarrassed to bring this cake to my sister's baby shower. It wasnt the tastiest cake, it was bobble-headed, was lined with chocolate, and it looked nothing like what we were expecting. We were going to let it go but we cant! read more

This is a Persian Bakery that I have been going to for many many years. They're located in a small shopping center where nearly each business is Persian (grocery store, florist, restaurant etc). It's a one stop shop for me! They have plenty of parking so it's really convenient to get in and out. Prices at the bakery are based on weight...to give you an idea - I recent;y purchased 4 Rollettes and 1 Slice of Cake and it was about $20....so roughly $4 each which I think is very reasonable! Everything is delicious - you can never go wrong with the Rollettes and if they have the Banana Pistachio Cake - I definitely recommend it! If you don't speak Farsi, it may be a little difficult to communicate depending on who is working but just point to what you want LOL. I love this place, I generally would select them over most places when getting treats! They serve hot tea and have ice cream as well. They accept Cash and Credit for payment and there are a few seats inside and a couple outside if you decide to enjoy your treats there. It's not a problem for me since I always do take-out, but just a heads up that they do not have a restroom for customers available. read more

Came in asking for a custom cake. The owner was able to accommodate us on rather short timing as we wanted the cake after a week. Sent in a photo online of what we were looking for and it came out perfect. The taste was excellent and the price was better than other bakeries I've seen online. This shop is obviously run by bakers who care about their craft. Note: The ears are bent in the photo below cause I mishandled the cake on the way back to my apartment. read more

This is such a cute, local bakery. I came in for custom cookies for my flower girls. The owner was so accommodating and the cookies turned out better than I could have even imagined. They have a lot of little desserts like fruit tarts and cookies. However, they also have a ton of different baklava's and similar dessert. We discovered Cakey Bakey by happen stance. Looking for baklava at Mediterranean market. Decide to go into bakery first. Bingo! Scored! Did our own sampling of 4 baklava, 5 cookies. All delicious. Winner was pistachio baklava. Her syrups were lightly distributed, sweet but not overtop soaked sticky sick sweet. Will definitely recommend and return. read more

I pre-ordered on a Thursday for a pick up on Friday and they were already out of their seasonal Black Forest Bun which sounded delicious. After scrolling through the menu multiple times, I decided to get the Pistachio Strawberry croissant and the Kouign Amann. When I arrived at the store, I immediately noticed the pre-order pick up window and was so glad that I wasn't standing in what seems to be on atleast a 25-30 line which I though was crazy for a weekday morning. The staff that gave my order was so friendly and it was so quick. What's great is they hold your order for atleast 24 hours in case you're unable to pick it up. There is some seating in the patio but honestly it's not meant for sitting and enjoying the pastries because there aren't really any tables but only seating. So it's best to pick up and take it home or eat by the beach which is what I did. The place is cute with a lot of plants and good vibes though. Since they don't warm up the croissants , I was worried that it wouldn't taste good while eating it at the beach but I was absolutely wrong. The Kouign Amann was okay, I'd give it a 4/5. The Pistachio Strawberry croissant however, was so absolutely delicious I'd give it a 5/5 even though it wasn't warmed up, it had the perfect amount of sweetness. Turns out it was just as whimsical and quaint as the name of the bakery would make it seem, from the pet freindly atmosphere to the passion fruits hanging from the overhead trestle! As a tip, order ahead for pickup! Wayfarer opens its doors at 8 am, with online pickups avaliable as early as 9 - 9:15am. We walked right up, passed the already growing line, and enjoyed our breakfast. Truly the only way to skip waiting in line; going early won't cut it! We got three different croissants, as well as a baguette. Can't go wrong with the original, but the standout (to me) was the almond, with a crunchy top and stuffed with almond filling (think marzipan!). Perfectly balanced, and the almond, nor the sweetness, was not too overpowering. The Kouign-Amann had a crunchy, sugary shell. Almost like a creme brulee topping on a croissant. Sticky, but so delicious. Also shoutout to the baguette! One of the best I've had. Next time I'll have to bring some fruit, cheese, and honey. Wayfarer's vibes transported me to a community garden in Santa Cruz, and the tastes and techniques to Europe. Good thing it's inconvenient to get here from UC San Diego or else I'd be here much more often.

Now for the pastries, I was really underwhelmed by them, the ensaymada was just fine, I honestly cannot remember the taste of it, it lacked something. The egg sando sandwich, the filling was plentiful and flavorful BUT the bread was dry, was that potato bread? The texture was off for me and I ended up just scooping out the filling and eating it like that. Where the sando had a good amount of filling the lumpia roll lacked it, it was so sparse I figured it would be more like a sausage roll so I was taken aback by how little there was in it. Flavors were fine, the pastry was buttery but I just wanted a little more. The one pastry we agreed was better than the rest was the turon kouign amann, the crunchy bits of sugar was so reminiscent of turon but the filling, for me was like uncooked banana bread batter, that threw me off entirely. It was better, but not the filling. So overall, I would say it was okay, I guess for the costs it just didn't meet my expectations.
