Amazing! Sat down to eat in company of my two sons, wife and mother in law. Our orders were chicken tacos, steak tacos tostadas and a quesadilla. We got an order of chips and guacamole. Don't sleep on Maggie's Kitchen for breakfast! Nate and I stopped in recently on a weekend morning and I got huevos rancheros. We had some questions about the breakfast burrito and the person taking our order was super helpful and gave some recommendations for filling - chorizo, egg, and potato plus beans and cheese. We asked how big they were and the response was "a good size" so I figured it would be huge. I was right, it's a big hefty burrito! We definitely could've split that. Pay at the counter and they brought the food out to us. The huevos rancheros was delicious but the eggs could've used a bit more salt due to the sweetness of the peppers and onions. I added some of the housemade hot salsa which was really tasty and not too spicy. I loved the sauciness of the dish and the rice and beans were particularly good when I find that these are usually more of a filler at some spots. The shredded beef was so tasty and I wanted more of that. The burrito was again, huge and stuffed full. I had a few bites and it was really tasty! Next time I'd try their menudo which they only have on weekends. Or the breakfast tacos. But that burrito will be hard to beat. The atmosphere is nice with plenty of seating and nice decor. Maggie's Kitchen is a very special place. I would definitely recommend dropping by at some point to try their food. I know this is a place I would definitely come back to try some more of their dishes. I got the enchiladas - two enchiladas: the beef and chicken. They come in a pretty generous sized portion. It was really good and it definitely tasted homemade. I've had more flavorful enchiladas, especially when I lived in Texas for a while, but you can just leave taste the care that they put into the dish. I would definitely have posted a picture of my take out dish, but I accidentally tilted my carton, so some of it spilled out into the plastic bag. So it didn't look very appetizing. But I can assure you that it was really good! I thought the interior of the restaurant was really cool (as you can see in my pics). It's a very casual environment and felt very authentic. They also sell tortilla chips, spices, and other things. So they don't just sell dishes that you can order. The workers behind the counter were so sweet and nice! read more

FIVE STAR MEXICAN COOKING AT ONE STAR PRICES! Maggie's is GREAT. Since 1983 Maggie and her team have been serving up authentic Mexican flavors on Bridge Street. You'll no doubt read plenty in other reviews about the food. It's flat out divine. Today happened to be TOSTADA TUESDAY. Two *humongous* tostadas piled high and teetering with pork (you can also choose chicken or beef), lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, guac, and green or red chili sauce. The tortilla held up really well to the bite, so the whole thing didn't fall apart when I sunk in my teeth. Came with a side of rice. Two of us each ate a plate of these tummy-filling babies for fifteen bucks total--boom! And get this: We happened to be there today on what turned out to be "actual Maggie's" 85th birthday! I'm really sorry to have to give 2 stars. The reason why is because we witnessed the lady with heavy eyebrows wearing blue gloves preparing our food, go to the cash register and handle a lot of cash, counting it while wearing the SAME gloves and then returned to finish preparing our food (AND other peoples food) and didn't change her gloves!!! HUGE food safety violation.Grabbed the flour tortillas and wrapped up our tacos. CHANGE YOUR GLOVES PLEASE!!! Please be mindful of food safety. I'd like to see you stay open another 40 years... I've been going to Maggies for years, the food is outstanding and I've always recommended it to others. Today I couldn't believe my eyes. We took the food home and didn't use the tortillas, we swapped them out because the other ingredients were added using utinsils. She didn't touch the meat with the gloves. However all of the tacos were handled with the dirty gloves to fold up and wrap up. Each one contaminated... Very sad. Maybe she forgot, maybe it was a mistake. Great lunch! We met family there and they are already fans. Several got the Tostadas, another the Enchiladas and my son got the tacos. I had the Wet Burrito and it was MASSIVE! Their service and attention to the customers is special and their food is really good. Now this is different! We're from New Mexico, and the tacos and burritos are not like those we get there - we're used to chile being the star. At Maggie's both dishes are very meat-heavy, and have the taste of home cooking - a little plain, but honest, tasty and comforting. We had beef and pork tacos and burritos in various combinations, in red and green chile, gravy and fajitas. Most included rice and the fajitas came with lettuce and tomato. In all cases the simple flavors and bulk of the meat took over, overwhelming whatever contribution the seasonings might have made. But I'm not really complaining - the meat was delicious! Two items really stood out. Maggie's has some of the best corn tortillas we've ever eaten. The tacos were each wrapped in two of these dark yellow, lightly fried beauties. They smelled and tasted deeply of the corn masa from whence they came. This is not a small thing - such tortilla excellence is extremely rare! Also, the refritos were creamy and redolent of lard, bacon grease or both - absolutely yummy. We'll definitely return next time we're in Grand Rapids. read more

I am under the impression that it's hard to mess up Mexican food so you can't go wrong with many of them around the area but if you're looking for something quick and reliable, then go to Maggie's! This restaurant looks a little run down from the outside and I can't say there's a great atmosphere on the inside either but that's not what you come here for! You order at a counter and then sit down in why feels like an authentic Mexican cafeteria. Food is great though! Food review: We'll cut to the chase and start with the best. The quesadillas are the best item on the menu (especially with steak). It is LOADED with Mexican cheese and oozing with flavor (and calories probably too). If you're looking for Mexican comfort food, this is the way to go! I have also had the burrito here and it is the size of a basketball. You get SO MUCH FOOD! If you're looking for value, then the burrito is the way to go. I've only been able to eat the entire thing once! BREAKFAST! They serve the best breakfast burritos around as well as breakfast tacos! My wife and I had lunch at Maggie's today and must say, this is some of the best Mexican food we've found i the Grand Rapids area. I had the 2 taco meal, which actually was enough food to make 4 taco's. The corn tortillas were fresh and warm, the meat (pork) was perfectly seasoned and cooked, plus the guac was fresh made and fabulous. My wife ordered the quesadilla with steak, which she said was very flavorful and probably the best she's ever had anywhere. What we liked best about Maggie's is that it's family owned and not as pretentious as many of the trendy Mexican joints in GR that have lesser quality food. When at Maggie's you feel like you're appreciated and one of the family. We highly recommend, and can't wait to go back. read more

To say that Maggie's Kitchen is the only and most authentic Mexican food in West Michigan is completely false. El Granjero is much better. Don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan, but have visited much less since I discovered El Granjero right down the street. Maggie's has great food, but the hours are terrible. It is more of a lunch/breakfast place. They're closed on Monday's, the prices are pretty high for the portions as well. The best deal is the torta. El Granjero is open 7 days a week, has a bigger more extensive menu, better hours, cheaper prices, and bigger portions. I loved Maggies when I first found it, but because El Granjero is just as authentic and a much better deal in every aspect, it's hard to justify going to Maggie's. If your in the mood for great Mexican, you can't go wrong with either, but El Granjero is better in every way. read more

Maggie's is pretty middle-of-road Mexican food for me. They straddle the fine line of authentic Mexican and watered down Midwestern-catered Mexican fare, which is definitely a good business model for any 'ethnic-restaurant' in West Michigan, but I feel like you could easily end up ordering something pretty bland if you don't request some modifications, which they are super good about. What I love most about Maggie's is the ambience--kitschy (in the best way), colorful, and charming. You can definitely tell the owners take a lot of pride in this restaurant and in Mexican culture, history, and cuisine. Although I am not especially religious or nationlistic, I take a lot of comfort in all the veladoras (saint candles), Guadalupe virgin images, images of historical Mexican revolutionaries (Hidalgo, Zapata, Juárez, Chávez, etc.) and pseudo-Aztec imagery. It reminds of my grandparent's and my older Mexican relatives' homes, so a lot of positive nostalgic association I guess. Maggie and your abuelita will probably get along and have similar tastes lol. I've only eaten there a few times, and ordered pretty standard onion & cilantro tacos (without meat) with beans, Spanish rice, and then I had them add white Mexican cheese and avocado slices. The rice and beans were flavorful. The vegetarian tacos on their menu have the tomato & lettuce shred with the orange & white cheese shred which is more the gringo-style taco, which is a good example of how you have to special order Mexican-style items here. The hot sauce selection was sufficient. And not to be hot sauce snob, but I'm glad their tables have the pretty standard El Yucateco-brand habanero sauces, which are always better than the weak vinegary crap everyone seems to go crazy over (Cholula, Tabasco, uhhh Frank's?... please don't hate me, but I'm just not a fan). Their table hot sauce game is mediocre, but it's a better selection than most Mexican places in town, so there's that. Pretty standard vegetarian options, fun ambience, friendly & helpful service, and decent food. It's a gem in the sort of run-down Bridge Street neighborhood. And with Harmony Hall right across the street now, it's kind of nice to see a little bit of life and growth in the area. I ordered a pork wet burrito, a barbacoa torta and a steak quesadilla. I ordered to go and I don't think it even took 10 minutes! The quesadilla was small, good, but nothing spectacular. The burrito was better than average, although I'd probably try a different meat next time. I saved the best for last, the torta was really incredible, the best I've had in GR so far, and quite possibly the best I've had ever.
