Before I found Maggie's Kitchen, I used to swear by Hot Tamale in East Grand Rapids. Word has it the owner made enough dough and split town. And ever since I was crushed. I hit the bottle and got depressed... I lost years of my life! Then I found Maggie's Kitchen and things have been on the upswing for me. I've kicked the bottle, I've found love, and I make a solid living working from home, doing nothing!!! Well, that's not quite the truth, but it's close. Maggie's was a great find and I know I'm not alone. It's a busy spot, every day! They do a great breakfast (try the Huevos a la Mexicana), lunch is superb, and dinner, yup, good on that too. Nothing special. Wait, they do serve two corn tortillas with a taco ($2.50 each). That's as far as it goes. They actually offer flour tortillas too if maize is too ethnic for you. The chicken was dry and flavorless. The pork ("puerca") roja was not exciting or wonderful either. Please add spices everyone. Mexican doesn't need to be spicy, but it does need to be flavorful, doesn't it? If you like the bland stylings of Taco bob's in Kalamazoo, Maggie will be your cup of limonada. The food was excellent! Fresh soft tortillas filled with quality ingredients. Everything we sampled was delicious and authentic. I tried the Pollo Burrito and the Pollo Torta. Both were fantastic and I highly recommend a side of salsa verde, it's wonderful with great heat and flavor. Prices were more than fair here too!!! read more

Kind of a mixed bag here. Very nice staff and large menu. I found the ground beef dry burrito to be dripping with grease in a major way. Perhaps the greasiest burrito I've ever had. I think it shouldn't be called a "dry" burrito since it is just gushing grease. If you were stupid enough to eat their dry burrito while driving, you'd look like you played chicken with a mechanic holding a grease gun. The bottles of hot sauce on the table were a combination of being empty and sticky to the touch, which is a bit gross. I also thought ten minutes to get my dry burrito and a taco to be excessive when they were only 25% full. El Sombrero is right down the road and has a far superior dry burrito for less money. El Cunado is a total dive, but I also like their food better. With El Granjero (my favorite Mexican restaurant in GR) right down the street, plus El Sombrero and El Cunado all within a mile of each other on Bridge Street, I'm not so sure I'll ever come here again when it's not as good and it's no cheaper. I feel like I'm going on a limb being a harsh critic of a Grand Rapids Mexican food icon, but I'm telling the truth as I see it, damn the politics. bleh. What a disappointment. With great reviews on Yelp and located just down the road from where I live I was hoping for new spot to frequent. The interior was fine, about as clean as one would expect from an authentic mexican restaurant located on bridge. After we ordered we were completely forgotten about. Which since we were the only people in there was a little odd. Eventually we found someone to get us our order. I ordered 5 different tacos for my wife and I, there wasn't a single taco that was good. The chicken was bland and dry. The steak was the same. The pork roja was just terrible. The salsas were bland. I think the chips were the only good thing about this place. Another weird thing about this place. I (usually) don't care about a businesses' political leanings, but when a place goes out of their way to display them its hard to not take notice. With bad food, bad service, and proudly displayed political leanings different from my own I will not be back. I'd suggest going down bridge a couple blocks to Tacos El Ganadero, or across the street to Little Mexico Cafe when the open back up. read more

Authentic, quick, yummy. Maggie's hits the spot for any lunch day. Not on the menu, but the best bet there, pollo and chorizo torta (just ask nicely...they'll oblige). The chicken is juicy, the chorizo is far from greasy and loaded with flavor. The guacamole is good to share, but could use a bit more salt (easily added ourselves). Get here before 12:00pm to avoid a long line--but even then, the staff works hard to get you fed ASAP. This is the most authentic Mexican restaurant in the area. I am always pleased with the fare. If you are looking for TRULY authentic Mexican, this is your place. If you are looking for souped up, spicy, Gringo-ized Mexican, go to Beltline Bar and Grill or On The Border. We're really disappointed in the price hike at Maggie's, man! My fiancee grew up in GR and grew up eating here. We live on the other side of the state and usef to go every single time we came in town, but for the last year or so we can't get there since they're closed Sundays. Stopped in today and got 2 pounds of barbacoa, a $10 chorizo, potato and egg burrito and some chorizo and egg tacos. The same tacos that used to be $1.50, then they hiked up to $2 and change, they were $3.50 per taco! For ONE taco! I am mind blown. We spent $70 for food for 4. Next time we're going to a fancy steak house instead of going out of our way for tacos. read more

I just moved here from Phoenix, AZ where mexican food restaurants are on every corner next to the local Starbuck's. before moving to Grand Rapids I had never heard of this "wet burrito" everyone raves about. It seems like everywhere I go the mexican food that people serve is this "wet burrito". Sorry to tell you Grand Rapids, but that's your thing, I don't believe Mexican's even know what a wet burrito is. When going to Maggie's they serve no such thing. I have been there three times and each time the experience was positive, service and food was excellant. This whole in the wall is exactly the kind of food I was hoping to find. Stopped in at lunch today and realized I wasn't the only one excited to visit this neighborhood gem. Located on the corner of Stocking and Bridge, you can't miss the big "Maggies" sign, across from what will be the new Harmony Brewing location(on the west side of GR). This mom and pop type restaurant is spacious and bright with Mexican influences everywhere. Had I decided to eat in the restaurant instead of getting to-go, there would have been plenty of tables. I jumped in line and ordered a dry chicken burrito with a side of pineapple soda. Given that I came at the peak of the lunch rush, my wait was about 15 minutes, which really isn't so bad especially since the food is so tasty. My burrito was about medium size and the chicken was moist and tender with a hint of seasoning. Maggie's is a great option for standard Mexican-American fare as well as some spicier and more adventurous plates for those who like authentic tastes. Can't wait to stop back in! read more

If I could give this no stars I would!! This is far from authentic Mexican food it's way over priced for some nasty food. The ground beef smelt and tasted like dog food the chicken was flavorless and dry the rice and beans had no flavor ether and hot sauce tasted like store bought pace hot sauce and same for the chips tasted store bought as were stale. Upon entering you get the authentic vibe which is pretty dope. The staff greeted us friendly as could be. The overall atmosphere was pretty neat with the wall decor and art. The overall price was pretty dope. Once we received our order we were immediately given a choice of salsas to accompany the tortilla chips. When we first moved here a few years ago we were excited to find a really good Mexican restaurant that actually was open for breakfast. The burritos were outstanding. The eggs were fluffy, the jalapeños were hot, the chorizo was really spicy, and meaty. Over the last year or so, something has gone off. The eggs are flat, the jalapeños are not hot, and the chorizo is ground way too fine, so it almost has a mushy consistency. We hadn't been in a while then decided to give it another shot. Maggie's is great! It has such a great vibe and a true family feel to it. The restaurant is quite large and the people there are amazing. Have you met Maggie? Make sure you say hi! The food is really great. They probably have one of the best pico de gallo in town! Its got a great subtle heat to it. The tacos are great, their tortas are good too, and their platos are quite big. The prices are great. I have never had issues with ordering in English. They are quite fluent in both languages (there is at least one person at all times).
