The wife and I are new to the area and we were craving some Chinese food. Yelp gave this place some good reviews and we decided to give it a try. I ordered from online and it was very easy to navigate. We ordered the Mongolian Beef, Chicken with vegetables and a side order of the combination fried rice. After making the order I was called by the restaurant to make sure I had made the order and then was told it was going to be ready in 15 minutes. I got to the restaurant and it was ready. I also want to mention there was ample parking. As I was inside the restaurant it looked like a place I would want to sit down at. When I got home the food was still hot and was very delicious. Also the price for the food was reasonable. I will be a returning customer and look forward to dining in. read more

I'm gonna start off by saying that Magic Wok is a hidden gem in JC! I never would've thought little ole Johnson city would have a restaurant that served authentic Sichuan cuisine! We've dined here soooo many times since having lunch here for the first time with some friends. After trying more things on the menu here and there, I think the cumin beef, beef with chili and scallion, and shredded pork with pickled mustard greens are our favorite dishes! All dishes are served with either steamed rice or fried rice which is always cooked perfectly. They have an Americanized menu and an authentic menu, and also have daily specials as well as lunch portions and prices. Ever since moving away, I've missed eating here so much. This was the first time I have eaten here and I was very impressed. The service was fantastic, they came around and checked on us several times throughout the meal, and were very helpful. There is a traditional Chinese menu and an Americanized-Chinese menu, I ordered off the traditional one and got the spicy chicken. It was a good amount of spice and very flavorful. Another consistently fantastic meal, NYC quality Chinese at Johnson City prices. All the veggies and meats/seafood were fresh and well cooked. The Szechuan (also spicy) flavors prevailed through all the key dishes--very similar to the renowned Peter Chang (voted best Chinese chef in the US a bit ago) that we had in Richmond VA area. If you think Tabasco sauce is spicy then be warned, as that is prob considered mild here. Apparently they have been at this location for a long while. Best authentic Chinese food! The food was so incredible we had to get seconds. The service was also wonderful. We had 2 servers, one man and one young lady who were on top of everything. So nice and welcoming. The ambiance was okay, could have been better but the food was so good I forgot where I was. Did I mention how wonderful the food was? It was pretty good compared to other Chinese we have had in the area. I had chicken lo mein and it would have been better if the delivery person had delivered it to us instead of the neighbors, and not broken the container where all the sauce dripped out. Even with less sauce it was very good. The egg rolls were really to greasy to eat so cannot comment on that, but their other dish was very good as well. My suggestion is to forgo grub hub, this is not our first experience with their poor performance and pick it up or eat in. read more

Then a friend introduced me to Szechuan cuisine in Flushing, NY and I realized I had been eating Americanized crap my entire life. Magic Wok has 2 menus. Take the American menu and toss it aside and order off the Szechuan menu. If you want a truly authentic experience then order off-menu. One time I ordered the dry pot. It is like the hot pot but with no soup to soak up the spices so you will get the true spice flavor and numbing effects. But the taste is amazing. On the Szechuan menu, my favorites are the Shiang La Mushrooms and the shredded potatoes in Szechuan sauce. Service is also very friendly and knowledgeable. My go-to place when I'm craving Szechuan food in the Tri-Cities. Conveniently located in downtown JC, Magic Wok has been serving food for over 25 years. Perhaps what stands out is that they offer a decent Szechuan menu selection which is great for the spice-enthusiast like me. I haven't had their Americanized menu, so I can't speak to those items. Since yesterday was Lunar New Year, the place was rightfully bustling and offered a free order of dumplings to all dine-in patrons to celebrate. We ordered their special, a fried yellow croaker and tilapia in numbing Szechuan chili oil, and some side dishes such as the "Fish Fragrant" eggplant and shredded potatoes to ring in the new year. All of which were super tasty and authentic! However, our beloved regular selections include rotating between the dry pot, beef noodles, and beef tendon stew. I'd recommend giving a try to these if you want to change up your food but can't travel too far. The mom and son owners are friendly and love to get feedback on their menus. If you're craving something, chances are they are already testing it out. Now if only had the famous Chongqing minced pork noodles (重庆小面)... Yum!! Absolutely the worst. Ordered online. Paid in store. Had to wait an hour after paying for food to be ready. Food was expensive and INEDIBLE! I ordered teriyaki beef sticks. They called me and said they were out... substituted the chicken teriyaki sticks... what I got was small pieces of shoe leather. Heat lamped for hours or microwaved. Wife had the sweet and sour chicken... all gristle. I thought I was getting schezwan beef.. what I got was a lot of onions and peppers with almost no beef in a red oily "sauce". Chicken low mein - tasteless Fried rice - cardboard tastes better. Worst food and I've eaten at a lot of dives. I wold rather eat a 7-11 egg roll than the food here. If you want a tip.
