Any shop using the word "apothecary" tends to pique my interest since they often carry more niche brands, or higher end skincare, and as someone who loves exploring skincare I am quick to stop in; this was no different. I was a little surprised to see as much Dr. Hauschka here as they carry since that's a line you can get at Whole Foods. It was also a surprise that as a shop specializing in makeup and skin care that they didn't appear to carry a sunscreen--and I mean an a product that was solely sunscreen, not a foundation or lip color with SPF 30 or something. Sunscreen is probably the most important thing one can use in their routine, but you wouldn't guess that at a shop focused on skincare? They have a LOT of scents here. It's a small shop and it can quickly become overwhelming, as well as hard to tell the perfumes apart. Both of us customers in store quipped about the lack of coffee beans, and learned that they had them once and when they spilled they stopped using them. I was curious about one but I wasn't able to tell what it truly smelled like since one of the other folks in the shop had sprayed several already. The person working gave me a little tester to take home, though, which I appreciated. I would give this store another whirl if I was in the area. But overall I was a bit disappointed in their skin care options and lack of detail (the missing sun protection). They have a lot of makeup here too but I didn't really look at that much (it was somewhat dark in the shop so I wouldn't have been able to see a true color anyway). The building is not accessible; there are several steps to get into the shop. It's street parking only.

The staff at this location is always extremely helpful, friendly and always greet you with a smile. I'm lucky that this location is close to my work and I'm able to get there on my lunch break. However, I have infiltrated said store several way. Those being: my two best friends, my bf. I've frequented CosmoProf several times and have always encountered friendly staff that's willing to come out from behind the counter to assist me with looking for nail polishes (I have the bf to retrieve my hair needs). The staff is always really friendly, even to an outsider like myself and usually chit chat w us while we browse. The prices are a-may-zing..I mean really, you can't beat $4.50 for a bottle of OPI. I also have gotten great deals on hair products such as $8 bottles of Aquage finishing spray, awesome sales on liters of shampoo and conditioners of all varieties and countless other products (ehemmm Quick Tan spray for $10). The only minor bummers are that a) they do not sell Essie, b) they sell out of OPI collections quickly (since this is beauty industry exclusive and those people are always quick to snatch up whatever's hot)..and c) I cannot shop here unsupervised, which may actually be a good thing since I'd surely head home with one of everything if I was left to my own devices.

My obsession proved a bit unhealthy, since I resorted to buying cheap candles since I went through them so fast, and that created a sooty environment in my home that I was not happy with. My husband and I ran across the FIG Candle Company and its lovely owner in the fall of 2011, at the St Charles Scarecrow Fest. The booth was just about ready to close down, when we walked by and asked about prices. The owner was lovely, sweet, helpful and welcoming, even though she was getting ready to go. She took us through candle fragrances, containers, even a background on wicks. What sold us is that the candles were made of soy, so they gave off a clean burn, and that was important for me because I was pregnant and wanted the air to be as clean as possible. We bought two petal pot ceramic containers and another smaller set as gifts. The prices are comparable to Yankee Candle Company, but burn cleaner, and you have to love a small business! Since them, I have asked my family to get me candles from FIG, most recently in the past two weeks. Truly, I am so so pleased with the candles, the service and the lovely owner. I will continue to return and encourage any candle fans to do the same!
