The best cafe in this side of town. There are only a few local coffee shops and they're kind of all stuck in the 90s. But the owners and employees of this place take extreme pride in their coffee. Room for improvement for sure. We went on a Tuesday night and were told that they were not serving the full menu only 3 type of pizza. This was not stated online, as we had researched the menu before going. To top it off, they ran out of pizza so only a few of us at the table got served, the rest went to the grocery store next door! As for the food...the crust was nice and made in house, but although the vegetables were fresh the pizza was pretty flavorless and over all disappointing. This was my go-to coffee shop for doing work for a long time. The food is ALWAYS delicious, including the vegeterian options (and boy do we need more vegetarian options in BR!) The coffee is superb - never tastes burnt or under-roasted like some of the other local places. I love that they support other local businesses and artists. It is very easy to spend too much money there - the foods and drinks are all that tasty - so be forewarned. They have free wifi and I usually manage to snag one of hte comfy chairs. However lately it has been too crowded / services too slow due to volume of people in line, and the music is sometimes too loud. Loudness of music + groups of people makes it (sadly) a less than ideal place for working for me at present, although I am super glad they now are open later in the day (and seems to be less crowded after 5pm though the food options are slim by then). If you want to splurge on a moderately priced non-gmo / organic / maybe vegetarian lunch, you should definitely go here. And try the juices - they are delicious. But the chocolate mousse... that is my FAVORITE when they have it. Definitely worth your try. They are a positive asset to the community for sure. read more

Finally, specialty coffee has arrived to Baton Rouge! I am from the area, but have lived away (Atlanta and DC) for the last ten years, and the worst thing about coming back to town has always been the dearth of good coffee in the area. Magpie Cafe definitely fills the void. They have a high-quality espresso machine, coffee from the Atlanta roaster Batdorf and Bronson, and well-trained, experienced baristas. They also do pour-overs if you're not in an espresso mood. And as if great coffee wasn't enough, the owners also have a passion for local, organic, seasonal food, so almost all their ingredients are from local farmers markets. The people are all super nice and willing to share their stories and passion. Be aware that they close Sunday all day and Monday afternoon. read more

Went to magpie cafe after hearing how great it was for the longest time. Now... when hearing how amazing something is, when you finally go you can be let down. I expected this at magpie but everything we got was delicious. I got a merengue and my husband and I shared a scone. My husband and I do not like scones really, but threw caution to the wind and got one. Hands down it was the best scone I ever had. It was blackberry lemon. There was blackberry in every bite and the lemon in no way overpowered the berries or pastry. It's the first time in awhile I was able to enjoy lemon. Clearly it was baked fresh and with fresh ingredients. Now the merengue, again, best merengue I ever had. It was lemon raspberry. The lemon merengue had a crispy shell and a pillow middle like marshmallows. The filling was raspberry buttercream, bright pink, and rich. I would go back for either item. I also plan to go back soon to try more baked goods. I now know why they get all the praise they do. read more

I walked into Magpie Cafe around 4 pm on a Saturday afternoon. I felt adventurous to try a new place in Baton Rouge after being gone for so long. I ordered a regular iced latte with some sort of meringue topped cupcake. The cupcake was pretty impressive, although with most whipped desserts, some of them started to lose their shape. The latte was just ok. I'm kinda picky when it comes to the proportions of milk in my drinks. They also only have agave nectar to sweeten drinks - no simple syrup. Apparently if you go too late in the day most of their menu items are sold out and you can only heat up what is in the case in large quantities. The atmosphere was very homy and warm. I like the wood floors and white layout - very welcoming. Everyone here seemed to be studying and trying to be productive. Parking was kinda difficult as they had limited parking (as expected in this area). Magpie met our needs of being a place for friends to meet up, but I'll have to return to sample their lunch menu items to gain more perspective on them as a restaurant. read more

I was very much looking forward to having a great lunch with some friends, but I cannot say that I was impressed with this café. First off, they were out of soup, so they merely crossed it out with a line through the name. They could have easily erased it since it was written on a chalk board. Secondly, there were only two sandwich options. I was okay with that at first until I was told that I could not ask to not have mustard on my sandwich since everything was already made. I was then forced to order the veggie panini. But get this-- the VEGGIE panini had NO veggies. It was just a grilled cheese. And not a very good grilled cheese at that. I also do not understand why they took a long time to serve because everything was claimed to have already been made. I am not pleased to say that the only thing positive about this café was the appearance of it. It was very well decorated. The windows were nice as well. I just do not think this would be my first choice when thinking of where to dine. read more

(Downtown location) Very disappointing. I've heard good things about magpie but our experience was mediocre at best. We all ordered the 3 course dinner-To begin, the waitress came to the table to ask if we were ready to order and after we said yes, she disappeared for a while- we just thought she was grabbing something to write our order down-but who knows. When she did arrive, i asked what items came with the charcuterie board- she replied with "meats and cheese" (no sh*t..I can read the menu), then I asked what kind, and she replied with "I don't know" and just stood there- so instead of taking a chance with her disappearing again for who knows how long to find out, I just ordered the corn salad. I'm not sure if she actually wrote our order down or was just doodling while we were talking because it took 20+ minuets to get 1 beer, 1 iced coffee, and 1 macchiato, to start. (we had to get up and ask the waitress how long before we received our drinks before we saw the person at the bar begin to make them). They brought out 2 of the 3 appetizers (even before we received our drinks) and the waitress had to ask the 3rd guest what she had ordered. The waitress approached our table and said that they no longer had the pork that 2 or 3 people ordered (not a big deal- it happens, we just placed a different order). After a long wait and then again having to ask the waitress how long until we received a part of our order, we finally received the 3rd appetizer (corn salad). Shortly after the 3rd appetizer was delivered we received our entrees; All 3 of us ordered the espresso steak with hash- steak was ok, potatoes were undercooked. Desserts were tasty. Overall bad experience (apparently as did the table next to us that walked out) and probably won't order anything but coffee and pastries here. read more

We gave this place three chances. The first two times we visited, we were not greeted or served. At all. We were looked at by the waitstaff for at least an hour and passed by multiple times. Both times, we had to go up to the bar to order drinks and food and have them bring it to our table. On our second visit, (and after another hour of waiting) I went up to a waitress and asked her why we were not being served and she said that she thought we just wanted to sit there and study. I think that is a bad excuse to give a customer, especially if you want to sell food or drinks and make money. The third time that we went there we were finally served! Hence, the one star. However, the menu that they had given us did not show the up-to-date prices and so every time we ordered something they came back and told us that it wasn't on the menu anymore and that they had another option that was two or three dollars more. The staff could be friendlier. Great location, unique coffee and alcohol concept, which is why we returned with higher hopes each time. The poor service really is a shame. read more

I drink a lot of lattes. I've lived all over the country and traveled internationally regularly. Magpie has the best soy latte I've ever had. Their granola on the yogurt parfait is excellent, and I enjoyed some sort of gourmet strawberry pop tart thing, too. I'm new to town and so glad I found this place. read more

Magpie Cafe from what I have experienced is different from one would expect. The decor is simple and the atmosphere is calm and collective. Arriving in the morning on a Sunday by 10:00 am I found the place a bit busy and teaming with locals. The service is welcoming and lively with attention on needs and willing to spare a joke or two. Ordering a mushroom and Swiss Quiche, which was recommended by my waitress, I decided to try this. From first looks it looks like simple and ordinary quiche, but I was quite good. A bit salty and rather strange taste at first, this dish became more and more delicious over the course of the meal. I did taste other items from the menu like Blueberry Parfaits w/ Magpie Granol and Paleo spice bread, which are all excellent. The textures and taste were refreshing and brought back the simple charm that I thought had all, but disappeared. I will sure to be visit once more. I was sitting at my table when the girl who took my order came over to tell me that all of the sandwiches were pre-made and they couldn't take the cheese off. That's when I realized that absolutely everything they had to offer today had dairy in it. Everything! ! Really, EVERYTHING! And all of it was already made. Best lattes I've ever had, in any city! The panini are to die for, especially the bacon, brie, basil, & apple or the pear & brie. It gets crowded sometimes but it's manageable. Parking is awful in this area so be prepared to circle the parking lot or walk. read more

Unfortunately, I have to give this place 2 stars. I am giving it that many because of the good attitude of the workers. It was all I was able to really experience. The situation: The very polite cashier turned around to the manager and asked if they had more sandwiches because they had run out said no we only had two for the day. Seems like something they should have known and scratched it off the board. When asked if I could simply switch out the bread or change the bread myself on the other sandwich, which I think is a reasonable request the manager also said no. (I would have paid for it even) No explanation was given or apology made by her; in fact she never even bothered to make eye contact with me. I decided if she was not going to be helpful in a situation that could be easily fixed that this wouldn't be the type of place where I want to spend money. I did not order anything and watched my friend eat. I will not be back. I can understand why others like this place, but as a former restaurant manager customer service is key when little hiccups occur especially by management. Watching someone else eat when you are hungry is also not good at any restaurant. Too bad I suppose. read more

An overpriced dump. Save your money. I went there with two friends. Saturday morning at 8am. Just when they opened. First red flag. No eggs and baconesque options. 95% of egg options were hard boiled. Seriously? Any options of traditional breakfast are left to weekday working scum. Weekends seemingly are dedicated to the hipster and cool peeps rules of food. In the end I ordered a waffle. Eh. It was ok. It was cold. Served with rock hard butter. Room temp syrup, jam in a small pot and a scattering of pecan pieces. A deconstructed Waffle House pecan waffle. To be more accurate, Waffle House waffles are actually miles better. I got my food fairly quickly because it was obviously already precooked. My two friends had the pulled pork with grits. One did not want grits and the staff had to consult with the chef if he would allow the grits to be excluded. The discussion was theater of the absurd. Their food came 20 minutes after I had finished my waffle. Their food was three shades of pale. The Pulled pork, I was informed, tasted like it was boiled. The grits one friend got were not grits. More of a cold congealed quinoa porridge. An over easy egg on top and a wallop of sour cream. Both of my friends took one bite and refused to eat their food and they both said it was awful. And they aren't picky. Actually one said awful and the other said disgusting. The place is much like a construction site hosting a coffee bar. And on that note, the only sweetener other than sugar was stevia. My friend said the stevia made his coffee undrinkable. One of my friends had an expresso macchiato (he had to explain to the barista what it was) the other ordered a expresso and a side of hot milk. The staff was quick to educate my friend that they ordered incorrectly. That went sideways. I ordered a Diet Coke and was quickly told they were only small bottles and there were no refills. I asked what had refills? They said nothing. I said, and .... your point? One friend pulled the ejection cord and left to wait outside. They hated the place. I got the bill. I was amazed at how overpriced this dump was. 2 coffees, 1 Diet Coke, one waffle, two pulled pork entrees that no one ate. Price with tip. $68. It's a place that is worthy of intentionally avoiding. The facility is not very nice. It's an attempt at nice furnishings in a bomb site. The food was an absolute failure. The service was abysmal. The prices absurd. The food is way better in the Capitol snack bar at a 1/10th of the price. As coffee is one of the drugs of choice for the hipster trust fund knit hat wearing society, this place might stay in business for at least as long as the temperatures remain cool. Spare yourself. Fresh, different, and delicious! Their lunch paninis are some of the most flavorful I've had. I've come here since they opened and it seems the portions have shrunk a bit (and not the prices), but you still get a great sandwich and a small salad with your order.
