I've been to the one downtown a couple of times. My first time visiting the Perkins one and it has a great feel to it! A place that you can pass if you aren't really looking but a great cafe! They also have a corner of the shop with natural health products that a very interesting. A fairly quiet place that you can get work done at. I will be visiting back to try the food. read more

Great little spot for some java action. Corner location is amazing, street parking nearby was ample at 7am. Lots of space inside means lots of room for socializing and caffeinating. Decor is very nice, light and airy with a welcoming color palette. Lots of natural light courtesy of the wall of windows. Super friendly staff and coffees are prepared very well. I feel I got a good value for my money $16 for a latte, two slices of paleo bread (closest to GF as kitchen is not certified but no gluten-containing ingredients) and a bottled matcha latte for the road. Make sure you call the right location though - there's one under the bridge that may have different items if you're checking ahead! read more

Wow. Just wow. I was incredibly surprised by this little cafe. Judging by the location, I did not think it would be anything special, but boy was I wrong. There is a very adorable outdoor seating area. It is not very big but definitely gets the job done. There are also multiple seating areas on the inside of the cafe. This would be a great place for schooling or working, as it is quiet for the most part. Magpie's includes a wide variety of options for people who are vegan, vegetarian, paleo, etc. My dad ordered a decaf latte, and I the beet latte because I wanted something healthy. Both were excellent and extremely creamy. I was very surprised by the smoothness of my drink considering all that went into it. There was a bit of a wait for our drinks, which did not bother me, but keep that in mind if you are in a rush. While we waited, I walked over to the corner of the cafe where many organic, natural, and locally made things are sold, including nut butters, soaps, essential oils, and more. There is also a wide range of various healthy products sold throughout the store like raw chocolates, mushroom teas, and immunity boosts. I loved the whole earthy vibe of this place, and love how they have many options for health conscious people. I loved this place. I went there times while in Baton Rouge. The food was tasty. I like how they have their breakfast food warmed up ready to be served. Still very fresh. Emily at the cashier was awesome. She was so sweet to the little girl in front of me. She was just a kind cheerful person. I liked my chai latte and my husband liked his Americano. This is just a perfect place...when I am there, I do not even feel like I am in Louisiana because it is not your typical place. It is definitely hole in the wall, but not one of those dark and dingy holes that you think bats are gonna come flying out of! Nothing cookie-cutter about it. For the location and the cafe layout itself...I give it a 5-stars...very "Central Perk-ish" (for those "Friends" fans out there), but I guess I was expecting them to have hot breakfast offerings...maybe an egg white omelet with fresh veggies. I think Baton Rouge lacks in breakfast places that offer more than a pre-made turkey patty breakfast sandwich and scones. I'm so happy this place reopened. I never got to try it during my college years because it was closed down. I love little coffee shops and this one didn't disappoint. The staff were welcoming and at around 11am on a weekday it was quiet with a few patrons working or meeting in the dining area. I ordered some sort of cheesy grits + avocado + bacon + soft boil egg bowl and Oh-My-Goodness, I wanted to lick the bowl. Definitely going to try and recreate this baby at home. My sister's breakfast panino + blueberry bar was also top notch and I enjoyed my iced cinnamon chai. +Bonus points for leaving a bottle of Sriracha out for guests. Pros: I love that there are always vegan options (e.g, a pastry, chia pudding, date-nut balls). Coffee and teas are high quality. I had vegan the blueberry poptart today and it was really tasty. Cons: The service is hit or miss. There is a very unfriendly man that usually takes my order. It's just unpleasant to interact with him. Today he put a clearly broken tea bag into my mug, so I had to drink around the tea-parts. There is also no toaster or way to warm food. I would love to get something from the to-go cooler and eat it in the dining area (like the rice & beans). My pastry would be nice heated up, too. The music used to be nice background noise but the last few times I've been in, it's way too loud. I've been here a few times to study and hang out with friends. It isn't my favorite cafe and parking can be difficult. However, I've enjoyed everything I've had here. I usually get small dessert items since I don't drink coffee. I think they're a bit overpriced, but that probably can't be helped. My only complaint about this spot is that the seating is uncomfortable and tight. It would be very hard to have a private conversation here. It isn't a beautiful space, but it is quiet and that's something. The staff is always polite and helpful. They may even suggest certain things if you can't decide! Anyway, I would say that if this place wasn't as close to my home ad it is, I would probably not bother going here but it has its charms. Speaking of charms, the outside seating area is quite pretty. It is surrounded by foiliage. The seating is a bit more comfortable but it is just wood, so you can't sit extremely long. I don't like that people can smoke on their premises, though. Traveling through and went out of our way to go downtown and find a local cafe. I have never been so disappointed in food. We got the vegetarian burrito and sausage burrito that took at least 20 minutes to get to go (we don't mind waiting for good food) and when we finally got them, we're pretty much just mashed potatoes in a burrito shell. The veggie one had 90% potato with gross piece of soggy spinach mixed in and warm section of avocado. The sausage one was that with a little unseasoned sausage sprinkled in. The Downtown branch of the Magpie Cafe has been open for at least a few weeks. I was staying at the nearby Hampton Inn, and while I was looking sadly into what used to be IPO, spotted the new Magpie Cafe across the street. Downtown Baton Rouge is still very much a work in progress, but slowly but surely it's getting there. Hopefully, this Magpie Cafe be part of the future Center City success. I came in twice. Once for Pizza night and the other when they opened at 7 AM for coffee. Service was very personable at door coming in, at the table, and leaving for the evening. Some of it felt like a just opened "eager to please" vibe, but behind that looked like a well considered business model. The food was excellent that evening, and by black coffee was good and strong in the morning. Much better than Hotel coffee. The space is large and casual. There's a well stocked bar in the back, a small private dining area to the left, and outdoor seating. The main room has a mix-and-match flexibility that should along a number of patron/private event combinations. read more

Decided to venture here since I was back in town. I didn't get food this time even though I should have. I asked if the chai was spicy, the person behind the counter was confused by my question. Sidenote- I like my chai spicy. She mentioned she could put less syrup. Which didn't sell me so I opted for a matcha with coconut milk... $6.50!!! Hoooo-leee smokes! I was hesitant to pay and thought about changing my order, but I figured I would treat myself. I wish that I didn't I get matcha pretty often and make it at home from time to time.
