I feared for my car's life parking in a gravel-filled area that didn't appear to be a parking space at all, but other cars were doing it, and I had no idea where else to go, so there's that. I spied vegan muffins! That said, their menu is not vegan-friendly as far as I could tell. Everything is pre -made, so there's no "leave off the cheese/butter/meat" option. The space is cozy and yes, crowded even in the summer when school is out, which would definitely indicate that 1. BR needs more coffeehouses like this one (exciting rumors that Magpie is opening up downtown!) and 2. I won't be hitting this location up once school IS in session because I go to places like this to work. It's not their fault they're so popular! Nice staff. Brought some friends to Magpie today. My friend's daughter ordered a piece of paleo bread and avocado for $6.50 (literally one piece of bread and a few slices of avocado). Unfortunately, she didn't like the bread (not Magpie's fault - there was nothing wrong with the bread) and wanted to exchange it for a different type of bread. The young lady behind the counter said that they couldn't exchange it and that they'd need to charge $2 for one piece of sourdough. My friend passed on the offer and was not happy - I doubt she'll return. Maybe it's just me, but I don't believe this is good customer service. I really enjoy finding homey little coffee spots and frequenting them often. I love the area this coffee shop which is located right between Southdowns and Garden District in mid-city B.R. Parking is easier at this location then their new downtown location but I like the new spot as well. Anyways, this area has a lot of local little shops and restaurants, and it's got a great laid back vibe going on. I believe this is what I enjoy about Magpie as well. I haven't tried their lunch items yet, but I plan on it on my next visit here. I got a honey iced latte, it was pretty good, but it wasn't too flavorful, and I wish they offered more iced and cold drip coffee flavor blends. If I owned a cafe, this would be it. We had an americano and a vanilla almond iced latte with the broccoli quiche and the bacon egg and cheese panini. The food flavor was amazing because it was made with herbs in addition to the normal ingredients, which takes it a notch above most breakfast places. The portions weren't that big, but neither are the prices so it was a great tradeoff for those who want a filling but light breakfast...it's never good to start the day in a food coma! First of all the appearance was very casual and cozy. Outdoor seating and plenty indoor with a coffee trip feel. Definitely appropriate with the close proximity to LSU. I would have adored this place in college before I moved to the other side of town. Service was friendly, and food made right in front of you, which is always exciting. I ordered the paleo special, which I had no idea what they event meant. They asked me if I ever tried it, then explained it very well. I decided to be adventurous and get it a whirl. So glad I did! The paleo special of the day was an open faced sandwich with turkey, fig jam, pear, and arugula on a homemade paleo bread. I'm actually posting weeks after I ordered it, and my mouth is still salivating. The cake is very flavorful, and you can tell that it isn't mass-produced. You can even see the vanilla bean seeds in the batter! The buttercream is surprisingly light. I enjoyed the temperature at which the cake was served. It was cool, which was perfect for this warm, beautiful day. Must say that I didn't fully understand the awesomeness of Magpie at first. Magpie was the first place I went to in Baton Rouge and it just felt like another independent cafe, like the ones I frequent in Oakland. My friends who live on BR were so ecstatic, the food is organic, fresh and clearly made with love. After pursuing other menus in BR, I quickly realized how unique Magpie is for the area. In a city with plenty of CC's coffee and Starbucks outlets - it's good to have some of the independent, stand-alone coffee shops around the place. As one reviewer has already said - Magpie really does have its own unique vibe that is not "typical" to southern Louisiana - but, instead, has more of a hipster, farm-to-table, save-the-planet feel about it. I have not had much off the menu, but what I have had in the past has always been very tasty, leaving you wanting a little more. Today I had your basic Latte and pumpkin bread - both very well done. Local artists appear on the walls, WIFI friendly, lots of natural light, an outdoor patio sort of area - with umbrellas! - which is nice for cool mornings and fresh air. The staff are friendly and efficient. The whole thing is inviting, relaxed, warm. Very easy to come back to.... Shout out to Hamsa and Lane! This was an interesting experience, it definitely has a hipster coffee shop vibe. They sell cute msaon type jars, coffee & tea but of course, and various pastries/food. You order at the counter and wait if it is for to-go and if you're eating there you find a spot and make yourself cozy. It was a little bit of a wait but we came on a saturday morning and my cousin ordered brunch. Her waffle eggs benedict was delicious although it took a long time for it to come out we almost thought they had forgotten about it. We also ordered a matcha latte and it wasn't anything to write home about but it was satisfactory. I've never been the type to go out and eat a lunch by myself but this place was such a cute little cafe that I just had to check it out. My boyfriend and I were in Baton Rouge for about half a day but since he was busy working, I decided to have a day to myself. My first stop was grabbing some brunch and juice before heading to the mall. I looked up reviews on Yelp and decided to check this place out. The cafe itself is very comfy and opening, with good outdoor and indoor seating. There was definitely a coffee shop vibe, a lot of people had their laptops and books out. I really enjoyed their selection of sandwiches, salads, juices and pastries - everything looked so good! I got a panini that came with a side salad and a juice to go with it. The weather was beautiful so I grabbed a small table outside under an umbrella. The panini was delicious, perfectly toasted with great flavors! I also enjoyed the salad and the juice. All the ingredients were fresh and tasted great. Magpie Cafe was such a great way for me to spend some time to myself, eat delicious food and watch Friends on Netflix. Found this place on the Yelp app and was excited by all of the photos and different options. The reason for four stars is because a limited rotating menu is offered and if they run out they cross it off the board. I was really looking forward to the Monte Cristo sandwich but it was not offered on this day. I chose the BBQ portobello sandwich. I read about the honey vanilla latte on Yelp, so I had to get it. It did not disappoint ( I had it with almond milk). I also had the blueberry filled king cake...oh em gee! I am normally not a "filling" type of person, but this was ridiculously fresh and perfectly sweet. Will definitely make this a place to frequent! Oh my goodness! I love Magpie, and wish it was in Phx! :) They have absolutely the BEST coffee and pastries I've ever had! Now I know I've probably said that in reviews for other coffee houses, but this time I'm really serious. Magpie uses all organic ingredients from local farms, and all their pastries are made in-house -- and believe me, you can taste how fresh everything is! The only thing that kind of stinks when going to Magpie is that, because everything is made so fresh, once they run out of an item, they're out, so be sure to have a backup plan of what you want to order incase the person in front of you orders what you were going to get (and it's the last piece... which is exactly what happened to me when I wanted the last slice of the deliciously-looking piece of blueberry tart... GRRR!) I ended up ordering an iced honey latte (so yum!), my cousin got the same, and then we ordered blueberry homemade pop tarts (OMG, you HAVE to get one, or two, or three... We did! Lol. You won't be sorry), and I also got the last Blueberry Brioche Roll (be jealous! And yes, I'm obsessed with blueberries!) My aunt ordered the Potato and Leek Soup and absolutely loved it -- it was so rich and creamy, not starchy and floury like cream-based soups are at other places. The location itself is so cute and homey-feeling; it's quite welcoming and feels like you're at grandma's house. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful as well, which adds to the welcoming atmosphere. We sat and chatted for a bit while enjoying our coffee, pastries, and soup, and then before we left, we stood in the long line again (totally worth it!!!) to order another honey latte and some chocolate chip cookies -- we couldn't resist! Magpie Cafe is an incredible gem in Baton Rouge. I always recommend it to tourists, out of towners, and locals who want to try something new. Magpie does healthy and eclectic food with excellence. They offered fresh squeezed juice way before the big squeezy opened a few blocks down. They regularly offer gluten-free, paleo, and vegan options that even traditional foodies would spring for. Recently they began offering dinner options, not just breakfast, brunch and lunch, and I've heard great things. But where magpie shines is their coffee selection. They are a "third wave" coffee cafe which means something significant about the origins of their coffee beans, but what that translates into for the regular consumer is that their coffee is *awesome*. It never tastes burnt or too acidic. The baristas will help you pick out a brew, since they regularly change and introduce new blends. A free refill is offered on a brewed coffee. They offer multiple milk selections as well. Many coffee shops don't offer almond milk but magpie DOES and they still provide killer latte art on top (picture provided). Customer service is top notch. Come once or twice and the cashier will remember your name, or even your drink (my husband is "cayenne mocha guy" haha). The atmosphere is nice. Outdoor patio is quaint and cozy but indoors is airy and a great place to meet friends or get work done. Their hours are probably my least favorite part. Closing a coffee place at 8 makes sense I guess but sometimes I want coffee on Sunday's (they close at 1) or after 8 on a weekday. Magpie is splendid. This review is highly overdue. Cool little place, very busy to be off the beaten path. Not being from the area I wasn't to sure what university it's near but there was tons of student traffic and a consistent line at the counter. They serve local, organic sandwiches, salads. Juices, coffee, tea and cookies just to name a few. They offer different daily breakfast and lunch specials that appear to consist of a soup, salad and sandwich..all of which are made with fresh, local ingredients. Magpie offers both indoor and outdoor seating as well as free wifi. Their pumpkin latte was the best i've had..puts Starbucks and dunkin donuts to shame. Let me say this. Based on taste of the food and coffee and the location, this place is amazing. Several panini choices including a vegetarian option, a salad option, and everything is made fresh for each person. The specials when we came in were the Broccoli Quinoa Salad, the Veggie sandwich, and the Bacon and Brie sandwich - all were GREAT! Unfortunately on my first trip this past weekend, there were some service missteps that made for a not so great overall experience. The counter lady took our order quickly and efficiently, but when it came time to receive our order, the system was a little weird. One of the food runners stood on the back porch outside and called my name three times, but she didn't have any food. She said she was just making sure I was still there and that I hadn't gotten my food. Ok? When she came back out a few minutes later, she had my friend's food but not mine. She had also neglected to give my friend a salad she ordered. After about 10 minutes, she returned with my sandwich. They did bring the salad my friend ordered as soon as we told her they forgot it the first time but the whole situation was just a little odd. This cafe has an incredible selection for anyone trying to eat vegan, paleo, or dairy free. They have several non dairy milks for their lattes and they also offer a golden milk and a lavender latte. I got a lavender latte with almond milk the first time I went in and it was super amazing. The lavender flavor wasn't over powering. It was very subtly sweet. The shots of espresso weren't bitter or watery. I also tried the waffle eggs Benedict, the paleo chocolate pudding, the boozy banana bread, and the vegan chocolate chip cookie. They were all excellent. I didn't care much for the ham and goat cheese wrap that they sold in the fridge. There are also many places to sit and eat and the atmosphere is really nice. Parking in front of the building is limited but right across the street there is plenty of parking. I will miss this cafe when I go back to California. read more

This is the best coffeeshop I've been to in Baton Rouge so far! They know what they're doing here as far as the drinks go and use good quality beans. I like that they have a lot of options but also keep it simple where it needs to be. You can get French press, Chemex, or V60 single origins here. They also serve cold brew iced coffee drinks and espresso drinks (6 oz cappuccinos, 12 oz lattes, etc) and hot and iced teas! One thing that I loved was that they sell pre-made juices and dark chocolate bars (two of my favorite things in life)!!! The baristas were really nice too, which is always a good thing!! Molly told me a lot about their menu and about their coffee and juices (thanks Molly!). Finally, the layout is really cool and ideal for studying/working or just talking with some friends. The hot chocolate I got didn't have much taste, it seemed watered down...and it wasn't hot as well. Maybe it is a ready to drink temperature but like I said I like my hot drinks hot!! I stopped in to pick up a cup of coffee on my first visit to this place. As I was holding an insulated cup, the employee, very politely explained that she couldn't bring it behind the counter because of Covid restrictions, which I completely understood. However, when I asked her if there was somewhere that I could rinse it out (because I was traveling), she informed me that it was their policy not to allow it. As I walked out, past the restroom, to go to another coffee house that could accommodate the rinsing of a cup, it certainly made me wonder about customer service. read more

This is more a response to the comment on my previous review, rather than an update. My rating remains. I would absolutely understand a dollar charge for extra side SALAD as the case does user good tomatoes and a vinaigrette for that. However, I only asked for extra lettuce, and the person taking the order was fully aware of this. $1 for just a few extra pieces of lettuce is overpriced, no matter the type of lettuce. (I didn't want anything more, especially since I can't have the salad dressing) Also, just a side note for the workers: as a courtesy to customers, please inform them that sandwiches come with a side salad, and that it is already dressed. Not only would that information had negated my need for the extra lettuce , but it would have given me a chance to let you all know in advance to leave the dressing off, rather than have to request it be redone. This place is great! We live in Houston but spent the night in Baton Rouge (on our way to Florida for vacation). Before embarking on the second leg of our roadtrip, we needed a place to fuel up on the necessities - coffee and food. We are decidedly urban dwellers that are spoiled with lots of unique and easily accessible options at home. And so I turned to yelp - as soon as I saw this place, I knew we had to try it! Let me start by saying that this place is CUTE! The food behind the counter and menu on the wall gave us the impression we were in for a treat. (And judging by the wait staff and clientele - a healthy one, at that). The line was long (a good sign) but the staff was very efficient at taking care of everyone, while remaining friendly and completely unflustered! We ordered 2 almond milk lattes; I got their open faced paleo half sandwich; boyfriend got their turkey panini & a cinnamon roll for him. I also got a small yogurt parfait & two giant chocolate chip cookies to go for the road. Lattes came out quickly, hot, and with beautiful latte art (which I always appreciate)! I tried a bite of the cinnamon roll - it was tasty, and not completely sinful. My open faced paleo turkey sandwich was yummy - I loved the tomato chutney (surely housemade, and something unique) and I was perfectly satisfied. My boyfriends panini completely wowed me though! It had onion jam and smoked Gouda and I had to ask for an extra bite :x. A few hours into our road trip, I've already eaten the parfait (loves the granola. Perfect sweetness and crunch) - I just wish it was a little bigger! And we have, of course, sampled the chocolate chip cookies. They are huge, moist, and a meal in themselves (seriously, these are paleo???)! I think that the only caveat is that we found this place to be a little pricey. You, of course, get what you pay for (organic, vegan, paleo high quality ingredients with variety), and it isn't stopping us from hitting this place up again on our way home (Must. Eat. Turkey.
