I would give Magpie Tattoo and Jinna ten stars if I could. I'm 51 and I have never had a tattoo. Until 47, I never wanted one. After my beloved Toonces died of cancer in 6 weeks just shy of 8 years old (after only 23 months with me), I thought about getting a paw print or kitty tattoo. It took me four years to do it because I feared the pain. A small tattoo like the one I got doesn't hurt. I didn't even FEEL it. I was warned that ankles are tough but this was truly nothing. The store is absolutely beautiful, located on East Broadway. It's 10 minutes from City Hall (if you don't get lost) and about 12 minutes from the F train. When I arrived, Jinna showed me printouts of the tattoo I found on Pinterest years ago (I don't even do Pinterest but there are many examples of every sort of tattoo imaginable). I wanted something smaller so she did what she does with the iPad and voila. The only thing to know---and I didn't until after the work---is that you CANNOT SWIM for two weeks. No baths, no saunas, no steam rooms, no jacuzzis, no cold tubs. This is the hardest part of tattoos for a mermaid like me. I don't imagine I will ever get another tattoo but the work is exquisite. So delicate! I found Jinna through my friend who also got her first tattoo, an outline of Brooklyn, where she lived 26 years and raised her daughters. I gasped when I saw it: the lines were so delicate and sharp. Jinna is the best. She also loves cats so we talked about beloved kitties, past and present. read more

At first walk-in I was taken aback on how beautiful, clean and wonderful smelling the inside of the shop is. So I was only in New York for the weekend for vacation and I really wanted to get a tattoo because it's literally one of my favorite places in the states to travel to. The original place I wanted to get tattoo'd was pretty pricey but thought was worth it cause it was super clean and women owned. However they were all booked up. I worked so hard to look up any other female artists that would take me last minute and not for a ridiculous price because New York is soo overpriced with their tattoos it's ridiculous. I stumbled upon this amazing gem of a shop and it's women AND minority owned!! That's such a big deal to me. Both ladies in the shop were great, but my artist was Renee! Right off the bat we walked into a welcoming (and entirely woman owned!) environment with beautiful decor and plenty of space/seating to social distance. We were encouraged to sanitize, which definitely made us feel safe during these difficult times. Everyone there was lovely, especially Jinna Lee who I believe did the piercings for us today! She is very knowledgeable about her craft and answered any/all questions I could possibly have before, during, and after getting my tragus done. Jinna pierced my ears, two on each lobe. She had to go through scar tissue for one of them but it was no problem. She was thorough and attentive and really really sweet. I cannot recommend her enough, between her informing me about the piercing and aftercare, warning me of the dangers of putting costume jewelry in new piercings, and her friendly demeanor. I even went back because I was worried about how one piercing was healing up, as I had agitated it and lost the cap to one of the earrings. She gave me a new cap and inspected my ear free of charge, and told me to come back so she could insert shorter earrings in a few weeks. She's wonderful! read more

I came in to magpie a complete disaster! I had my nose stud switched over to a ring by another piercer who had no idea what they were doing...they put a cartilage piercing in my nose and I looked insane. Thankfully, the two folks I worked with at Magpie were extremely understanding and had the most gentle hands of any piercers I've ever worked with.
