Over the weekend, I was in NYC with my niece and sister when they suggested we get tattoos. I agreed, and they both looked at me like I was crazy--at 68 years old, they didn't think I'd actually go through with it. At first, I wasn't sure what kind of tattoo I wanted, but my niece found Uplift Tattoo & Piercing and we walked in not thinking they would be able to accomodate us. When we arrived, the setting was very nice, and the person at the desk directed us to Helly. Helly was extremely kind and asked what I had in mind, as I was the only one who knew what I wanted. I told her I wanted a paw print with my dog's name on it. I got emotional talking about him, and she reassured me, sharing that she had lost her dog as well. She was so empathetic. Helly then showed me some of her designs, and I immediately chose one I loved. I looked through my photos of my fur baby and found the perfect paw picture to send her. She began designing, taking my input, and together we chose the best one. It was the most delicate paw print I've ever seen. The experience was incredibly relaxing, and I wasn't nervous at all. The entire process, including the design and tattoo, took about an hour and a half. When she finished, the result was beautiful. Got a small fine line tattoo here. The minimum was $200 no matter how small you go and the tattoo artist wasn't very personable :( I wouldn't recommend this place for walk ins. However, the tattoo looks good and healed well. read more

I got this Saturday and have received feedback from other artists on the lack of thought into shading and dimension. I sent multiple photos prior with a description and stating whimsical and realism to the image and got a chicken scratch kindergarten drawing. Now I will have to go through laser removal. They told me Jakki was available, and like most of their artists, when I looked through her portfolio, I could see she was clearly super talented. The studio itself was super nice, and in a great location. Prices were great, staff was friendly, and they were able to get me in super quickly. Jakki was so badass, and obviously very talented. She was so fast and detailed. I couldn't believe how small she could get the tattoo, and how patient she was as I decided on a placement. I first came upon Uplift Tattoo & Piercing when visiting NYC for the weekend - I decided to get a NYC specific tattoo (of the MetroCard) and got the privilege of having Rui as my artist. It was a walk-in session, completely unplanned, and the wait was not terribly long. The staff were very friendly and helpful with everything. Rui is an incredibly talented artist and was patient and supportive with figuring out what I wanted. More recently, I got my septum and tragus piercings with Lamb, who is a phenomenal and knowledgeable piercer. This visit was also a spontaneous venture and I was seen rather quickly. He made the whole experience less stressful (for me, it was about the pain) and talked through the steps. I am very happy with my decision to come here for my piercings and appreciate the time Lamb took to ensure I had everything for post-piercing care. I was very excited to get a new tattoo at Uplift. I follow (now followed) their instagram and seen the nice work their artist do. I have nothing negative to say about my artist quality of work but I do have my opinion about the negative experience and bad customer service. Booked the appointment. I explained I was coming out of town. The day of the appointment I received a message from the artist to request to reschedule our appointment. Please see the attachment text conversation. I understand that situations happen but the lack of an apology from management was a deal breaker. When I went to the shop, no one approached me to talk about what happened or offer an apology. I was shown some tattoo photos of instagram and was told "he" will be your artist today. At the time I paid, the pricing was higher than when originally quoted for the same tattoo. At that point I didn't feel the argument was worth the time and left. I would have like to keep going to Uplift and keep getting tattoos there, but the lack of customer service, increase of price, and no appreciation or apology, really was a turn off. read more

I came in with my friend for a butterfly flash tattoo sale. Their instagram shows great art and every artist seemed talented. The tattoo sale has many different butterflies ranging from $50-$350. I picked two butterflies that were $50. At the end when paying for the tattoo I was told the shop has a minimum of $300 for any tattoo that is given! About a week later the swelling is down on my hand tattoo I was very disappointed with one of my butterflies. I called management and they told I can come in for a "free" touch up. To my understanding touch ups came with the price of the tattoo. I look up my artist which was supposed to be Zay. Turns out I wasn't tattooed by Zay on the day of the tattoo or my touch up. Even though my confirmation emails say Zay. Not only is it false advertisement to say you can get a $50 tattoo but you have to pay there minimum. Not only to mention its unprofessional to book a tattoo artist but be given a different tattoo artist. Every time I went there was only 1 or 2 artist available. With none being able to properly communicate since English was an issue. I traveled downtown for my tattoo twice and paying $300 plus a $50 tip to be completely unsatisfied with my tattoo. The tattoo is on my hand and I dont wish to go any bigger, I will be getting it removed. read more

I visited from out of state and decided to get a tattoo at this shop. They recommended Zay for my tattoo, in which I sent references and descriptions of how I wanted it to be like beforehand. When I arrived, the artist sat me down for a consultation on the spot and opened up the references for the first time. So I'm not sure why I sent them in advance if she wasn't even going to look at them or the description I put. I had originally booked for a 1-hour slot of a 2-inch tattoo with color. I have been to artists that can finish the piece I wanted easily within 1 hour; however nothing could have prepared me for how long this session was. The consultation was 40 minutes alone. I chose the smallest size available for the design. And when she started, I could feel that what should have been one line, was separated into small strokes. I understand that each artist has their own style and technique, but this made the entire process much slower than it needed to be, especially for such a small piece. Every 10 minutes, she would stop and go get more paper towels or drop more ink into her tray which I feel should have all been set up prior to starting the tattoo. If you had all the materials you needed beforehand, you would not need to stop and get more and waste time, added up it was probably around 15 minutes gone whenever she did that. Though I was very uncomfortable in the position, I felt like I was being timed myself and if I asked for a break, they would charge me for that as well since it is an hourly rate. The whole session took nearly 4 hours and because of her speed, she had to cancel her next appointment. I would have rather she told me up front if she knew how long it would take and reminded me of the pricing which was apparently $500 per hour??? My warning to everyone, do not go to artists that charge an hourly rate, because no matter how small you think the tattoo is, you'll be on the clock when they start tattooing and they can take as long as they like on a single line or stroke or shade. The prices are already ridiculous, and they do not make it clear at all even when you're speaking directly to them. They seem to hide how much the end price will be until they're done and suddenly you have to give them your whole paycheck. I did not sign any physical document or waiver or notice for prices, or my age to tattoo which in turn would mean that they can also charge however much they like, which is unbelievable. I tried to negotiate a discount after I had left New York as during the time, I was in a rush to leave because the session went over the schedule by 2 hours. But they would not budge at all and think that a complimentary touch up would be enough, even though every artist I have been to provides a free one-time touch up anyways. And I would have to go to New York again ... make it make sense. Save your money and be careful when choosing artists and tattoo shops. read more
