This is my favorite place to go with a group of people! Everything is served family style and it's fun to pass all the dishes around for everyone to try a little of each. Portions are huge! Maharaja also has an interesting array of Indian beers to go along with your dinner. Service is always quick and the interior is decorated nicely. While I've tried almost everything on the menu, I always go back to the Chicken Tikka Masala. They really just have the flavors of this dish down perfectly! And don't forget to order naan! PS. This is one of Milwaukee's gems; a long-time denizen of the east side, an Indian restaurant before there were other Indian restaurants in town. For over a year now, my group of friends has been meeting once a month at Maharaja for the princely buffet lunch. It is always wonderful -- homemade Indian food, always fresh, always subtly spiced and delicious. The owners are an Indian couple that takes the time to get to know their patrons and greets us every time we come. The prices are more than reasonable; the service is friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is pleasant. A very special place, and we are all huge fans! read more

Absolutely wonderful!!! Fantastic food, pleasant service, enjoyable decor. Clean environment and fast service. Food was fresh and delicious! Wide selection as well as special South Indian delights like uttapam and dosas with fillings of your choice, including fish. We split the vegetarian appetizer plate and fish pakoras, then split the fish uttapam served with coconut chutney and tomato chutney on the side. Marvelous! Great Masala chai with refills! It was restaurant night, so we decided to go for Indian. We got there (after taking forever to find a parking space) about half and hour before they closed. I felt really bad but I was supper hungry too. Back to the review, first off I would like to say that the server was on point! He was honest, by telling us he didn't know what everything was because he haven't tried everything. Guided us through what was good (in his opinion) and what was popular. Stopped by for the lunch buffet with some friends after not eating here in a few years. I remembered enjoying Maharaja, but this visit was not very good. Quality of the food was hit or miss. Chicken Tikka Masala was not very flavorful, but one of the vegetable curries was pretty good. Tandoori chicken seemed undercooked, but desserts were tasty. All in all a mixed experience. With many more Indian options around town now than when I used to frequent Maharaja back in the day, they are falling further down my list. read more

The food was delicious, so flavorful. I usually salt all my food but not here. I tried nearly all the items on the buffet and enjoyed each one. If this place closed I would openly weep. I've being going to Maharaja for nearly 7 years now for my ethnic food fix. I'm completely addicted to their chicken tikka masala. There should be a wing at the Betty Ford Clinic for food addiction and I'd have to check in tomorrow. The buffet is good however the spice level is always dialed down for the mass public which I don't prefer so I usually do take out. I know that ownership changes and management changes have occurred, but I did not expect the experience I had last night to be as dismal as it was. This was probably due to the fact that I have had many great meals here during the past ten years and it was my go-to Indian restaurant. There were 5 of us at dinner, and the new menu is fine. Mostly the same choices as before, just laid out differently. The appetisers we ordered came out very quickly. None were hot including the fried choices. We ordered several orders of garlic nan, and it, too, was tepid. The main courses were the big disappointment. Nothing tasted fresh. You could taste "refrigerator flavors" and smell "refrigerator odors" in all of the dishes. The Tandori Grill choices were leftovers, and the shrimp was mauled looking and still cold. The other dishes were not spiced properly. Very out of balance. The tables now have glass or plastic tops over the table cloths and placemats, and Corele™ dinnerware has been substituted for china/porcelain product. Unfortunately, like many of my old favorites, Maharajah is living on past glory. Everything suffers from cost cutting. The price points are low. Obviously too low. Survey a randomly selected cross section of Milwaukeeans about Indian food in the fair four-one-four, and chances are more than a few folks will mention Maharaja. Some of those folks will wax downright emphatic about the food, some will tell you it's their go-to spot for Indian, some will praise the convenient location on the east side... I've been in Milwaukee 10 years now (eep!), and hadn't been to Maharaja until last week. After visiting and sampling a variety of apps, mango lassi, and their chicken vindaloo (hot, not very hot like Ariel or Joanna ordered!), I feel confident giving this spot a solid a-okay. (In actuality, I'd love to give 'em a 3.5, but again, the half star rating... not an option for us yelpers, so the context of the review will have to suffice. Read on!) Pluses: +Veggie appetizer sampler plate: samosas, pakoras (cheese + veggie), and some other thing... fried delights with serious veggie flavor served up with a trio of sauces (mint chutney, and two others of which their nature I could not discern... not that it mattered). Delicious/delightful! +They rock a lunch buffet which sounds absolutely lovely; while we visited for dinner, I'm definitely going to come back to check out what sounds like a gem of a mid-day offering per other Yelpers that I definitely trust. +Garlic Naan: So carb-y and delicious and garlicky, you'd be a fool not to order this w/ your meal. Do it. Middle of the road: *Chicken Vindaloo: tasty, but somehow falling a touch flat when it came to flavor. I've come to expect full, round flavors from Indian dishes (in part to the glorious glory that is Anmol), so when I dug in I was a bit disappointed to find heat, but not much more in terms of flavor in the dish. That said, every palate's different, so remember that this just one gal's opinion. (Also worth noting: Nishan and Jessica say that veggie dishes are more flavorful at Maharaja... should've paid attention to that before ordering!) *Mango Lassi: not bad by any means, but again, not the best I've had in the cit-ay. Solid for balancing out a spicy dish should you choose to indulge in one. *Service was friendly and kind, yet also a touch inattentive. While I felt our server was sweet, present, and attentive at some points, at others he would disappear for long stretches of time - which was fine, we were all chatty Kathys and hung out for over 2 hours - it was still a touch difficult to get a beat on his rhythm. Not bad by any means, again... middle of the road. (To be fair, he may have just been giving us space, however.) Other: -They DO have a parking lot... it's on the opposite side of the street just before the restaurant itself, so be in the know and save yourself a serious lower east side parking headache. -Joanna and Ariel absolutely have to have a spicy food-off at some point. Both of these ladies ordered extra spicy vindaloo and didn't bat an eye. Checked out the brunch buffet. I loved the chickpea salad. My suggestion would be for the signs to have more description of what you are eating. I'm not familiar with Indian dishes, so I had no idea what I was getting except for ones that looked familiar. I'd also like to see more vegetarian options and have them be marked so you know what you're getting. I also asked for just black tea and it came with unwanted milk (I thought I distinguished wanting black instead of Chai). I would just like more info on what goes into things and how they are prepared. Overall though, I think it's a good deal for the price! The staff also seemed nice. read more

Having been here for dinner and lunch, I would say this place is definitely the perfect weekend lunch spot. First off, the selection for the lunch buffet is unbelievable with all kinds curry, I would say try a small sample of each one to get a feel for your favorite dishes, Did I mention they have GOAT curry on the buffet line?! My favorite dish by far was the vegetable curry. A bit sweet but spicy, hard to describe but I just kept piling it on. Literally, would have paid the lunch price for just that dish.. But wait it gets even better. Their ice cream is AWESOME. I am completely hooked on their Kulfi ice cream, which is nut based. It literally is a sugary sensation that you dont get to experience a lot in Milwaukee. I swear I could eat 5 cups of this stuff, and I am usually not a sweet tooth. All in all at $12 this buffet is an absolute steal for lunch. Dinner is a bit more pricey and portions are not as big, so I highly recommend coming here for lunch. read more

Came in the other day after years of walking past on Farwell and smelling it all the time. I mean, let's be serious, it smells friggin' amazing. From blocks away. We snapped. We ate. We conquered. Such a nice family running the place. You can tell how proud they are. Had the Makhani Chicken and it was awesome. Very solid Indian buffet. Here are my buffet thoughts: 1) I don't expect the food to be gourmet at a buffet. This place isn't, but it is always done well and on par with the better Indian buffets I've been to in other cities. I've been to plenty of bad Indian buffets, and the food here is never bad. 2) I like labels, and this place has them. I'm not an expert on Indian food, though I do recognize most of the dishes. I have a mental problem not knowing what I'm eating. 3) I like variety, and you can find it here. My distaste for cauliflower tends to make small Indian buffets a challenge. They always have pleasing dishes like chicken tikka masala and this big hot plate with grilled chicken and veggies (deconstructed kabobs, sort of). There are always numerous other meat and vegetarian dishes, soups, and ice cream. I know I'll find plenty of options I like. I only go on weekends, so I'm not sure if it is different on weekdays. At $12 it is a fair value. Someone else commented that it is filled mostly with "WHITE folks" (there goes the neighborhood...). I really don't know why anyone would care, but my experience is that half or more of the patrons are Indian. I know a lot of people have a mental illness when it comes to needing what they perceive to be authenticity. If it tastes good, why does it matter? You know what's authentically Indian? Hepatitis A. Anyway, the dishes here are the exact ones you'll find at virtually any other Indian buffet. Again, they're done well but it is still buffet food. Maharaja has by far the best Indian food in the Milwaukee area! I have been there numerous times for dinner with my family and the food is excellent every time. The service is very professional and quick but not too rushed. All of the servers are very knowledgeable about the menu, so don't be afraid to ask them any questions. My favorite Signature's are the Traditional Curry, Vindaloo, Saag and Mango. The regular, Garlic Naan and Basmati rice compliment each Signature very nicely. read more

I had to give an update for my review of Maharaja because I have since discovered the joys of their take out buffet option. I have been back to Maharaja at least five or six times since my first review (always for the weekend buffet) and I have yet to be disappointed. I am slowly learning the different names of all the dishes I have been exposed to through their excellent buffet in the hopes of being able to really compare the quality of food here with other Indian restaurants. Something has changed at the Maharaja. We have been regular custormers for the past 6 years and have enjoyed the lunch time buffet. But our last visits have not been good ones. The number of selections on the buffet has been reduced. The last time we were there (9/11/13) there were no green vegetables in sight. The chicken tikka masala and the chicken tandoori have suffered in quality. They used to be moist and tender. During our last two visits, the meat was dried out and certainly seemed to be reheated. Has the management changed? Has the chef departed? Whatever has happened, it is not for the best. Prices are up and the number of selections is down. This was an excellent buffet only 6 months ago- Now both the quality and quantity have changed for the worse. read more

The samosas were good, but the palek paneer was medicore and the chicken tikka masala, although ordered to be mild, ended up spicier than anticipated. It took me a long time to get here, but it was worth the wait. Had the lunch buffet today ($11) and it was a great array of different Indian foods. Their vegetable korma, tandoori chicken, and cheese/mushroom masala were all excellent. I also tried the minced lamb - I forget what it's called but it was really good as well. This buffet has more variety than my favorite Indian restaurant in town (Mayura), but the price is also a little more. Very nice cross between Northern and Southern Indian styles of cookery. Generous portions, nice variety. They offer mild, medium, hot, and very hot as the heat quotient. I ordered hot, and was quite pleased with the level of heat. I'd have to build up to very hot, I imagine. read more

Let's start by saying that this is some of the best Indian food I've ever had!! And let's continue by saying that Maharaja catered our wedding on 9/3/17, so this is a catering-oriented review - although if that's not what you're here for, I most definitely recommend a restaurant visit as well. :) In a word, wow. Mr. and Mrs. Singh and their team were simply amazing. We knew we wanted something different from run-of-the-mill wedding catering, and this was the best possible choice. Most importantly: the food. I cannot tell you how many compliments my husband and I got on the food at our wedding; people who generally love Indian food were impressed, as were people who had never tried it before! Mrs. Singh was also SO helpful throughout my entire wedding planning process; having never hired a caterer for such a huge event before, I had lots of detailed questions for her. She was friendly and responsive and helpful from start to finish. And when the day of the wedding arrived, everything went so smoothly.
