We ordered delivery while staying in Milwaukee overnight. Little thing, but they didn't send silverware! You'd think if they knew it was going to a hotel, they would send silverware since we're not going to have any. Husband got the lamb curry, and we ordered it "medium" spice, which was level 2 out of four options. It was INCREDIBLY spicy and he couldn't even eat it. I ate it, and it was pretty good, but almost too spicy for me even, and I LOVE spicy food. I had gotten the mixed tandoori ,so husband ate that, and the meat was REALLY dry. read more

One of the other reviewers raved about the "donut holes." Staggers the imagination. I'm going to guess she liked the gulab jamun. So that's the main negative about this place, it mainly caters to non-Indians which limits authenticity. I think the underlying social problem is that us South Asians don't yet constitute a high enough concentration of population to give rise to the kind of authentic Indian restaurants found in ethnic enclaves. This is in spite of having two major research universities, an elite engineering school, and a high prestige liberal arts college in town, what the heck is with that? But it's all relative, and this is one of the two best Indian restaurants in the Milwaukee area. I'm not sure it would succeed on Devon Avenue in Chicago, but it might survive there. Here in Milwaukee, it does pretty well. Though the menu is more extensive and varied than any other Indian restaurant in town, the actual selections are inconsistent. The fish curries and South Indian dishes are generally good, most of the vegetarian choices are also dependable. The entrees are somewhat overpriced, but that's the East Side location coupled with the relative lack of competition I think. Pretty good choices for lunch buffet, but the food is also especially bland then, even for dinner off the menu, specify that you want it spicy and hot, if you want it to be mild and flavorful, they err on the side of not-spicy-enough. Service is usually good, though the non-Indian waiters are comically ignorant about Indian food. read more

The smells that greeted us when we entered the restaurant indicated that we had chosen the right place for dinner. The menu had a lot of vegetarian options as well as entrees that included shrimp, fish, beef, lamb, and chicken. The samosas were not over filled over fennel-ed starchy concoctions that you may find at other Indian restaurants. These were slightly smaller than your fist and perfectly seasoned. Despite that I don't like fruit in my food, I ordered the SHAHI PANEER which has chunks of cheese (this kind of cheese doesn't melt it just softens, and it looks like tofu) with some vegetable garnishes, cashews, and raisins. It was perfectly seasoned and truly was a "royal vegetarian delight" as the menu claimed. My dining companion had the BEEF MANGO. He pronounced the beef perfectly cooked and the pieces of mango as "interesting." It was so amazing, he did not have anything left from his entree to take home. Our service was very attentive. Plans to conquer the lunch buffet are in the works. Also, one truly has to appreciate a place that puts a mostly negative review of their restaurant on their tables underneath the glass, this either shows they have improved greatly or that guy didn't know what he was talking about. When you're on the East Side, this is the option for really good Indian food. The lunch buffet is comprehensive, and for those who like the heat, a little spicier--as well as containing a different variety of dishes--than some of the other options in town. The buffet includes two soup options (usually including Mulligatawny, a tastey lentil-based option), Pakoras and salad as starters, and a wide range of entrees. The two options I don't see much elsewhere are a variety of creamed spinach with homemade cheese curds and an outstanding vegetarian rice/vegetable dish that is savory enough to stand on its own (pilaf-style) and subtle enough to eat with the various sauces/toppings elsewhere on the line. They also have three dessert options: My favorite, Kheer, as well as the honey balls and mango-based custard of some sort. The servers are unobtrusive and generous with the water refills for those who overestimate their heat tolerance. As usual, though, with the buffet-style service, beware of the eyes-bigger-than-stomach syndrome--I still haven't managed to eat lunch there and still feel the need to eat any dinner that night! read more

Food was really good. I split the mango chicken, which was amazing, with a friend, and we also split the Aloo Chole, which was also very good. This was my first experience with Indian food, and it was very ggod. I just wish the portion sizes were a little bigger, seeing as you're paying $12-$14/entree. People love Maharaja, check it out. I've had much better Indian food though, but my meal was pretty tasty. My Indian friend in Chicago took me to some hole in the wall places on Devon street that blew my socks off, and they were pretty cheap too! I felt the love in that food and was getting images of recipes being passed down through the millenia steeped deep in the culture, but not so much at Maharaja. Don't get me wrong, I get take out from here and I enjoy the food, just not the best I've ever had. I'm excited to try Mayura a little up the block. I wonder how much these two places dislike each other. :) read more

Let's start by saying that this is some of the best Indian food I've ever had!! And let's continue by saying that Maharaja catered our wedding on 9/3/17, so this is a catering-oriented review - although if that's not what you're here for, I most definitely recommend a restaurant visit as well. :) In a word, wow. Mr. and Mrs. Singh and their team were simply amazing. We knew we wanted something different from run-of-the-mill wedding catering, and this was the best possible choice. Most importantly: the food. I cannot tell you how many compliments my husband and I got on the food at our wedding; people who generally love Indian food were impressed, as were people who had never tried it before! Mrs. Singh was also SO helpful throughout my entire wedding planning process; having never hired a caterer for such a huge event before, I had lots of detailed questions for her. She was friendly and responsive and helpful from start to finish. And when the day of the wedding arrived, everything went so smoothly. I went with a co-worker because this place is within walking distance of our office. We did the lunch buffet, which was plentiful and delicious. The biggest downfall to me was the fact that they do not have little descriptions of the food items, which could be a discouragement to those who aren't already familiar with the food. I'm usually apprehensive to going somewhere that serves food buffet style, but everything was tidy and warm. I got the tomato soup, which did not appear to be homemade, but if it was, it tasted like Campbells. (Which is alright by me.) I didn't get to try the special soup, as it was coconut and I am allergic. I was excited to see Saffron rice on the buffet line as I am too cheap to buy saffron in my own kitchen, so it is always a pleasure to eat some. They had chicken stir fry available, which I went for because I am a chicken and onion junkie. I am excited to announce it was moist and delicious. If you work in the area like me and want to escape for your lunch hour, this is a good place to make that happen. read more

We've never had a bad experience at Maharaja. The shrimp masala was spot-on as usual. We tried the reshmi kabab this time around and it was really delicious. I usually order some kind of kabab to accompany our meals and have always had the standard tandoori chicken. While that is fine, I'm not a huge fan of dark meat so we always have left-over tandoori chicken. The reshmi kabab is all tender breast meat, marinated in sour cream and spices. It's not too spicy so my kids can enjoy the kabab as well. Great dinner. Can't wait to return. read more

I went there with a friend for dinner and found the wait staff was attentive, the dinner and the appetizers were good and the wine was great. The place was packed and yet, our chai, our catfish appetizer and our curry dishes arrived right on time. My friend had the lamb and I had goat. When we return, we will try something else, like doing the buffet for lunch. There was a mixture of workers and guests and that is a bonus. Be cautious: order medium heat. read more

My favorite Indian restaurant in Milwaukee! The shahi paneer is my all time favorite dish. Will get about 90% of the time. I usually order to go, but have eaten in a few times. Ah this used to my desi buffet place when i was doing my MS at UWM. Staff is pretty friendly. You get a lot of variety for veg/nveg so this use to be choice for both the parties. One thing you will get here all over the year is Mango ice-cream and I used to eat a lot:). its pretty close from the Univ so if you crave for Indian this is the good place to try out. One thing i will like to say that - they need to change the music CDs they play, if i remember correctly 3 yrs i have listened to same CD ha ha :). We recently stopped here for an early dinner and couldn't have been happier. We ordered nann, onion naan (kulcha), Matar Paneer, Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Madras. Each dish was served piping hot, prepared to the spice temperature requested and were delicious. We ended up being able to eat our leftovers for dinner the next evening. A co-worker recommended this restaurant during a recent trip when I was craving some good Indian food. I travel every week for work, and no matter what city I'm in, I always crave something that the city is NOT known for. Well I don't know what Milwaukee is known for (besides beer), but Maharaja is HANDS DOWN one of the best Indian restaurants I've visited in all my recent travels. It was freezing cold, wet and snowy when I arrived after work. I ordered carry-out from the bar. The staff was super nice and friendly. I ordered paneer tikka masala (not on the menu, but the chef had no problem making it for me), tandoori chicken, cheese naan, and of course samosas. While I waited, I was treated to a cup of chai tea. IT.WAS.AWESOME. I've been craving it ever since - literally, randomly walking into whatever Indian restaurants I can find and asking for chai tea - but have not even come close. I can't explain how good it was, and the staff told me that it takes 45 minutes to make one batch. Everything was smashingly good. The Tikka Massala was just spicy enough, and sooooo rich. The samosas were hefty - no little teasers here. And the cheese naan? Dipped in the massala sauce? GET OTTA HEEYA! The tandoori chicken was a little dry, but spicy - and great dipped in masala sauce. Everything is good when dipped in masala sauce. Thank you Maharaja for making my visit to Milwaukee that much more memorable. If I'm there again, this will be my dinner spot. read more

The food was great and the waiting staff was top notch but the downfall to this restaurant is that is really quite expensive while the portions are very stingy. Asking for an extra bowl of rice is met with a reply of "would you like an extra side of rice? It's $4?" Given the relatively expensive food, the portions are comparatively small. There are plenty of other Indian restaurants in similar price ranges that serve you plenty of food for a $45 tab. Coming with a group of three moderately hungry people and ordering three dishes will not leave you with any leftovers at this place. The food itself was great though, if not a ripoff! read more

The time before was a few years ago now, and while the details of this story are well worth accounting, this is certainly not the place, so I will say then only that I was quite impressed with the buffet. Last night's dining experience was far less, well, sordid, thankfully. Anyway, my ladyfriend took me out after a particularly bad day, and, having both been craving Indian for the past few days, we decided on Maharaja. This was an excellent choice. Please check your bill before you leave. We went there for a Sunday buffet. 3 adults and when we got our bill for 3 regular buffet with no additional orders, the bill was over $50. Per person buffet is usually around $10 so the bill cannot over $50 The bill did not have description like what we ordered but only the total amount. We noticed this after giving the tips of 20% on top of the bill. When we asked about this, they simply said this bill is for other table and they added additional charges to our bill and gave the regular bill with 3 buffet and its price.
