I had an absolutely wonderful experience at Mahoney's, and I just have to share how amazing Anna was! She truly went above and beyond in helping me repot my plants, and I'm so grateful for her expertise. My plants were in desperate need of some TLC, and Anna not only saved them but also gave me some helpful tips to ensure they thrive. She really knows her stuff! She was friendly, but not overbearing (which I love! Hello, this is Boston), kind, and generous. She made the entire experience so enjoyable and stress-free. Anna was also fantastic with my daughter, taking the time to explain things about the root system in such a down-to-earth way. I could see she was inspiring a love of plants in her too, which was such a special touch. It's rare to come across someone who's not only knowledgeable but genuinely passionate and kind. I've been to this location before (about two years ago), and I also had a great experience with a blond guy who helped me then. He was excellent as well, and my plant that he helped me save is still thriving! The store itself is lovely--great ambiance, light, temperature, and atmosphere. It feels so peaceful. They carry a wide selection of plants and such fun, quirky products. Their employees never try to upsell or be pushy, but if you need help -- they help. While it may be a bit pricier than some other places, to me it's very much worth it for the quality of the plants, products, and the exceptional service. I will definitely be back. read more

Walking into this serene space is entering into a place where you can experience the almost mystical duality of simultaneously being both indoors and outdoors at any point in time. The side doors of the lofty greenhouse design were left open, allowing a gentle breeze and birdsong to drift in while we perused the diverse array of plant species, all of which appeared very well-cared for by the meticulous team. I also had a question about gardenia care and was helped by the staff who were not only friendly but also very knowledgeable. Two definite plus points. As soon as I walked into this place I instantly wanted to keep going back. It is such a vibe, the weather was warm the Aesthetics were pleasing and this Nursery is absolutely the best. I felt like I was in a arboretum, I can't stress enough how it's such a vibe. They have so many plants it's ridiculous and so hard to find just one. We left with eight, they also have the cutest pots. Sculpted of absolutely everything, and they have outside gardening decor and chairs and stuff. This place is huge you can walk around all day. I really enjoyed myself today, so much so I made my friend vow that we do it once a month. read more

Really extensive variety of plants and flowers. We were on the hunt for pet-friendly plants for our living room and, while I'm sure everything was arranged according to their own system, we were really just squatting down, squinting at the labels, and then Googling to see if what we were looking at was toxic for cats. The "just okay" describes the employees, who were hit-or-miss. The guy who re-potted our plants was friendly and seemed the most pleasant and knowledgeable of everyone with whom we interacted but overall, I can't recommend Mahoney's as the place you go if you have lots of questions about how to pick or take care of plants. Really, it's more of a place to check out if you already know what you're looking for and are just going in/out. We had a question about what size plantars to get and we kept getting bounced from one employee to the next who had no idea (though it seemed a relatively basic question). I overheard this happening to another customer asking about how much sunlight a certain plant should receive: he kept being directed to one person after the next. The place seemed incredibly understaffed - the few employees that we did see kept their heads down and didn't really make eye contact, which took away from the experience a bit. Overall, we walked away pretty happy with five re-potted plants (and the prices seem on par with Home Depot) but I do wish the employees were more approachable. I am a landscaper and I end up purchasing a number of plants at Mahoney's every year, simply because they are close to where I live and work and sometimes I don't have time to go out to Sudbury to the wholesale nursery. The Allston location is absolutely the worst, mainly because of two managers who seem to have been there forever, and who treat people incredibly rudely. One of them once told me to "Get a life." The other one, James, is downright nasty and has been openly rude to me on more than one occasion. After the "get a life" incident I left a message for Tom Mahoney, apparently the owner, and he never responded. There are a couple of really nice people who work there, and I feel sorry for them having to endure such a bad environment. If you're a plant lover like me, this is yo place!! Mahoney's is a huge complex that sells an extensive collection of both indoor and outdoor plants/flowers. My friend and I came here to buy some new succulents but easily spent over an hour ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the overwhelming amount of plants sold here. And it is not just the plants/flowers that are impressive, they also a collection of decorative plant pots/containers for sale as well as a section where you can find all your gardening tools/ necessities. This is the one-stop place to go for all your gardening needs! The hardest part is definitely restraining yourself from buying everything (the plants are a tad on the pricier side), but it just alludes to the high quality of the plants sold here. Can't forget to mention that this place also serves as the perfect background for some aesthetic pictures since every corner of this place is absolutely a plant lover's dream!! ****WARNING**** Mahoney's does not stay true to their word on their 30-day policy. AVOID WASTING YOUR MONEY. I was reassured over the phone that my dead plant (lasted 5 days) would be refunded or exchanged without a receipt if I bought it under my account. I bought my hydrangea and within less than a week of purchase it died. When I brought it in to exchange, at the register I was told to go to the indoor part of Mahoney's to retrieve a new hydrangea for an exchange. I was met with a female employee and manager at the door. I was asked abrasively what happened right away without even helping me find where to locate the hydrangea. The first time I bought the hydrangea it was outdoors. The manager who is extremely rude told me I killed the plant and didn't water the plant (which isn't true) and no refund or exchange was possible. He then reached over grabbed the leaves of the plant and crunched them and said "Look its crunchy, its dead, you killed it" in front of everybody in the store. As a woman, I feel like no other woman should be treated like that by a man in front of anyone regardless of the circumstances. I asked for his name because I believe this "manager" needs to be reviewed for his behavior. His method of handing the situation is to belittle the customer and say they're wrong & to not abide by the stores policy. He choked up when I asked for his name and he said it was "Juanito". I honestly do not believe that was his real name just by the way he responded. So, I went back to the front and asked for his real name and found out its Gilbert. So here we have a manager who is extremely rude, giving false names because he knows he's wrong for what he did. This place is a joke. I will never go back & after reading previous reviews it seems as though I am not the only one having this same issue. This place needs to be investigated. read more

Not a fan of this location. As many have previously stated, some of the staff just don't want to be there. Let me start out with - I go to these garden centers to appease my girlfriend. When you date a landscaper, you can plan to visit MANY garden centers; possibly weekly. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't covid times and I could walk around and drink my coffee while she points at almost every plant we go by. "Uh huh.. where ya gonna put it." "Didn't you just buy one like that last week?" Becomes your garden center mantra. So! We go to this Mahoney's location every so often because it's on the way back to our house after we go to Koko Bakery nearby (GO THERE). This time we needed a plant from one of the top shelves. My girlfriend looks around at a few employees standing around and none of them seem to want to make eye contact and seemed to disperse when she walked their way. She was finally able to find someone and ask if they could help us with the top shelf when they were able to. They straight up grunted at her and said yea give me a minute. They then did four different things after we asked them and finally sent over someone else to help us. I was getting grumpy because my coffee was getting cold in the car, so I left my girlfriend inside to go caffeinate. When she went to check out she said the original employee she talked to was at the front helping box her plant. I kid you not, they picked up the cactus and went Ow. ... it's a cactus. Seriously.. what do you expect. They then looked at it and said , Yea, this one probably wouldn't have sold if you weren't buying it. It probably won't make it. ... LMAO... Then maybe take it off the floor or give it to her discounted after that? This location doesn't really have the friendliest people working there. Sadly, a lot of plants at most Mahoney's are overpriced. I've seen the exact same plant in two different sized planters, but they charge more because one is "bigger." We've had quite a few of their plants bring aphids into the house. They now have to go into their own quarantine in the guest bathroom (jungle) if they come home with us. We've found better plants at Home Depot many times and they have a better percentage at not dying. I really don't know too much about plants, but I have been dragged to enough garden centers to know a thing or two, and what I know is this is my least favorite one to go to. A lot of variety when it comes to plants but the prices are a bit high. I guess they have you locked down. There aren't many nurseries near Boston with the amount of plants that they offer. The pots they sell are crazy expensive, especially for the nice glazed cermaics. you may be better off buying online, unless you are looking for one with wacky color combinations. I do like that most of their plants seem to be in really good shape. It seems like they really care about plants and there is always a worker about who can answer questions. There is plenty of parking but I bet it fills up during the early spring months when people are bustling to fix up their gardens. I have gotten a number of rose bushes from them which have lasted me through the Boston Winters. I also like their selection of begonias and other flowers. You will definitely need a car when you come here and bring your own large plastic tarp if you want to protect it from dirt. They don't offer plastic bags. they do offer some boxes if they are available read more

I'm an avid plant lover and I've purchased many plants from Mahoney's over the years so I was really disappointed when I found out my $30 pothos plant was dying of root rot because they had planted several cuttings in an 8 inch deep pot to make it look like a lush plant. About 3 days after purchasing it I kept finding rotten pieces in the pot - figured it was adjusting to its new home and I kept cleaning out the rotten pieces. By the end of the week I was starting to get worried since none of the soil was drying (mind you I have not once watered it since bringing it home). Took the plant apart with hopes of repotting in fresh soil only to find 10-15 cuttings with shallow roots and a bunch of rotten roots. I don't even have a receipt to return it. I will be looking for a new nursery to purchase from. read more

Easy and mid sized parking lot, with snow it was easy to miss the entrance but do keep eye out for their big ENTRANCE sign so you don't hit the curb or anything. I am easily intimidated so I didn't really mind the employees not greeting me or asking me if I needed help. They seemed friendly to the other customers that needed help. This location is in Brightons so there's that city people thing. I was here for succulents and cacti so I can only speak to those. I would say good collection, they have gollum jades for $5-$6. Ovata jades. Cacti looked good but I'm not really into cacti. Saw maybe one or two Ming things. Didn't see anything cool like astrophytums. Succulents: the lithops were in bad shape, and only one head in each pot. Forgot to check prices. They had these extra big echeverias and haworthias in fancy pots. Showstopper stuff. They have smaller succulents like sedum, pachyveria, echeveria, one fuzzy gray kalanchoe. Some pink edged aloes. Aloe veras...I picked a haworthia cymbiformis $3.98. No pests anywhere, no webs no mites. Nice pots too, they have glazed ones and unglazed normal ones. (They have more variation in sizes for the unglazed normal ones than big box stores or craft stores and I appreciate that when it comes to potting succulents) Go to their website and sign up for reward membership. This place is HUGE! Of course, it is July so I understand it would be more barren in other seasons most likely but this place exceeded our expectations. They have so many plants with various indoor and outdoor plant options. We were on the hunt for indoor plants and had more than enough to choose from. Mid sized plants ranged from 13-30 dollars with very larger ones exceeding the 160 dollar range. Thought the large cacti were overpriced overall as I have seen some at other shops that are cheaper and come with a nice planter (these all come with just the standard plastic pot, but they do sell lots of planters which are quite pretty but can get pricey quickly). Overall the place was still great and would recommend for standard indoor ferns or midsized plants most and also for small succulents as they had many. Depotting a small plant into a pot we purchased was $2 (the guy didn't mention the price when we asked if they depotted.... just handed us the paper with the charge which was strange but he was overall very nice except for that instance). We will be back as they had so many options and a vast parking lot. read more

We just moved and were looking for some plants to bring life to our new place. Mahoney's is easy to get to on the bus (literally stops right in front), and we were pleased that's it's a decent size with a fair amount of variety. It did seem understaffed, which is why I gave it 4 stars, and most employees were pretty busy so it was hard to get someone to answer our questions. The first person we asked didn't seem interested in helping us, but the second was super-friendly and potted all our plants (pretty good deal for the $ if you don't want to turn your apartment into a mess of dirt) Just note that shipping in the area is a flat $40, even if you're just having a few plants sent to Allston, but at least they offer shipping, and it's worth it on larger orders read more

They also provide an expansive selection of pots, soils, fertilizers, and anything else needed for gardening. The staff is also extremely helpful with finding the correct gear for specific plants or other gardening needs. All of the plants that i have gotten from here have thrived and for that, I give Mahoney's two green thumbs up! read more

I think this is by far the highest quality, best selection, most helpful garden center in or reasonably near Boston. They have great plants that are high quality and guaranteed, which I find very valuable. The staff here is amazing and kind, they always help my mother and are friendly with her. They have great seasonal options. The succulent section is massive and diverse. The orchid are some of the best I've seen. There are some great outdoor stuff too like pots and statuary. I've gone for 4$ succulents and for getting 60 feet of hedging for my house, or even for 20ft tall bamboo! Great place to kill a hour and spend 100$. read more

Wonderful store with knowledgeable staff and excellent selection of plants, pots, and plant furniture. Particular praise goes to Amanda (I think that's her name), a young employee from Arizona. We brought in 2 pieces of cactus from a large, years old plant that our cat knocked over. We came just seeking advice, but Amanda did so much more. She carefully repotted the 2 cactus fragments. She scored the base of both cacti, applied rooting powder, made a soil mixture appropriate for the plant, and advised us on a watering schedule. She reported a particular interest and knowledge about cacti, growing up in Arizona. WOW!!! read more

Unbelievably horrible and brash customer service. I bought 2 dozen small outdoor plants. 4 didn't make it (within a week or so). I was hoping for an even exchange (even Home Depot does that!) I spoke to a extremely nasty and abrasive manager who said it was my fault, plants don't die on their own and refused to make the exchange. I asked if customer service meant anything to him (as I showed my multiple receipts from my purchases) and he literally said no, he didn't care! He walked away and when I asked for his name, he wouldn't give it to me and told the cashiers not to either. I have never been dissed so bad by a "family" business. BTW, can't seem to find a company customer service email or phone number so I guess they really don't care. read more

They are the best! Love the staff who are so knowledgeable. I go there often to get my mom plants. Sometime I call to get advice and ask what new plants they have so I can go pick up. Most recently I spoke to Sam who is just so kind and thoughtful and generous with her time in giving such great advice about getting mom a citrus plant and gardenia and how to take care of lucky bamboo. I purchased $1500 worth of plants for the summer to put around my pool. I purchased 5 hibiscus plants and trees at over $100 a piece. These plants are supposed to bloom throughout the entire month. Not only did they not bloomed at all the leaves are all turning yellow and falling off. I have been maintaining them with loving care,so you can imagine my distress when I went back and they told they would not stand by their product, no refund no deduction nada. Just had the worst experience at Mahoney's, don't think we'll be going back. My wife and I wanted to buy many pots and plants for our farmer's porch. The two cashiers were really friendly and got someone to help us. The woman who attempted to "help" us was extremely rude. Upon meeting us she stated that there was a truck she needed to help unload, I asked if someone else could help us, she said no, and that she would in fact "help" us. I started asking questions about which pots and plants would work in our space, she stated that they don't do design work at this location, that we should go to Winchester. There were also lots of other rude remarks about them being understaffed, it being July (guess we shouldn't shop in July), etc. We ended up thanking her for her time and we left. Think we'll be going to Wagon Wheel from now on. It's a shame, I've had better experiences at Mahoney's, but won't be going back again. read more

I bought two large impatiens pots (along with many other plants) and within a day both of them were nearly dead. I tried everything to revive them but they got progressively worse. A week later, I tried to return them, but the manager claimed I hadn't watered them enough (utterly untrue!). The customer service in this instance, including the rudeness of the manager, was pretty bad. I work in retail myself and would never treat a regular customer that way - all for a total of $32. Worst customer service ever. I bought couple small tropical plants earlier from them. Almost one month later, I found out there are too many small insects are coming out from the soil. Because I am a vegetarian I did not want to deal with insects. So I called ask them if I can return it, whoever answered phone said yes. After a painful process of loading them and 20 minutes drive, they said because the plants are in the pot, which was sold by them and repot by them, the plants are not in original condition and I can't return them. At this point, even the "reason" I can't return doesn't make sense, but I can sort of understand. Just tell me you are sorry and I will be on my way, but this guy made it so clear that is my fault to even try to bring them back, no sorry no nothing, he almost yelled at me. I never had an experience like this before. The general manager, John or josh, was SO RUDE and didn't admit his faults and made an excited customer extremely against here. When I explained that my plant withered and died after 6 weeks, (one of a million others I had) I even brought the plant, he said sorry that is his policy and kicked me out of the store. He said "sorry you have to go now, You are making me mad" and splashed mud in my face. (squished the dead plant in front of me). i feel bad for him that he has to treat others this way. read more

The Mahoney's in Brighton is hit and miss. Many of the staff members can't answer simple questions about plants! I was there the other day and tried to ask a woman when they might expect a new lettuce shipment (since their selection was not very desirable) and she snapped at me and said "I don't know" and then kept walking. RUDE. The Mahoney's in Winchester is generally pretty good, although a lot of the staff members there seem a bit on the miserable side and a little cranky. I was raised by a tree-lover, so Garden Center's were a regular stop for me growing up. I am impressed that such a large facility is able to exist in the dead of winter in Boston, but that being said, it very clearly was the dead of winter for Mahoney's. Inside is your run-of-the-mill greenhouse, but outside was a graveyard of dead plants, knocked over garden materials (it basically looked like a dump). We made our way in for some succulents, and thankfully there was a good selection. Unfortunately, the employees we had questions for were not too helpful when it came to green thumb starter advice. For the basics, this is a good stop. For the expertise, I'd recommend a larger commercial chain (Home Depot is amazing!) read more

I am amazed by the patience that the staff has with everyone's questions.... in particular mine! People there are very knowledgeable and it speaks volumes that the same staff members have been there for as far back as I can remember.
