Pan Fried Shrimp Pot Stickers was very crispy and yummy
    Peter C.

From the pictures I expected a line out the door and very busy. We arrived at 7:30pm we were seated right away. The dumplings we ordered were delicious. Don't expect the best XLBs from Shanghai but the food is very good. They do the basics well. The pan fried pot stickers are some of the best I have eaten. I ordered the ones with shrimp filling. The truffle XLBs are also very good. The place needs some help I can't believe it wasn't crowded. Maybe it was Monday and also they only take cash. But I expect that in Chinatown.

We were just visiting Montreal & my nephews love dumpling so we came here for dinner. The place is small & interior simple. Cash only, & if you pay in US dollar its 1:1conversion. All dumplings we tried were good! Generous with the hot sauce & the cucumber salad was refreshing. There was only one waiter serving all tables so there was a little wait before our food came. But the waiter was attentive. They got clean bathroom too. I would keep coming back if i live nearby.

This place has great dumplings! I would recommend the steamed / boiled ones and not the fried ones. We came here for dinner. They inform you as you walk in that they are cash only and they have an atm on premise for you. We tried the 2 dim sum options which were really delicious. I got the chefs platter fried and we definitely got 2 options but I didn't taste a third one. It may have been cos they were all fried. I found the batter thick on these. The next time we came back we got all boiled options and those were delicious. I loved the shrimp and pork selections. They have about 15 tables and are pretty generous with the chili oil. You have to go to the back to pay when you're done. I would definitely go back

Dumplings were great, perfectly cooked, and delicious. Service was attentive and friendly. Overall pleasant experience with very affordable prices for the quantity of food given to us. Only negative was the cleanliness of the space, which had no shortage of bugs and is in somewhat need of a facelift.

Just delicious dumplings! We had steamed pork, chive and shrimp, as well as shrimp, egg and chive. I love how fresh they taste. Also had a cabbage, carrot and wasabi salad. surprisingly good, but that wasabi adds up! Spicy! The host was gracious and helpful. Excellent service (although I will admit we went pretty late so there weren't a lot of other patrons at the time). be aware it's cash only so be prepared or bring a debit card as there is an atm

Let's start off with the star of the show: the fried pork and chives dumplings! These were so so good! Not too oily but the filling was juicy and flavourful. The dumplings were fried to perfection. I feel these are some of the best dumplings I've ever had. We also got the shrimp wonton soup to warm our bellies and it did the job. They give a good amount of shrimp wontons but I found the soup was lacking some heartiness and flavour but it was still good. We also got the beef and shrimp juicy soup dumplings which were a nice experience to eat - slurping the insides before inhaling the dumpling. These came out piping hot and they were quite good but we did find that the meat was quite hard to chew. They have soy sauce, chili oil, and vinegar as condiments for you to make your own dipping sauce. Did take a while for our food to come out but it was because things were being made to order! It feels like a mom and pops shop that's not super clean/modern as other restaurants but it delivers. They are cash only.

I am always up for a tasty soup dumpling and actually any and all dumplings if they are made well. You may think to yourself how hard can it be to find a place like that nowadays? Especially if you are in an area specific neighborhood such as Chinatown Montreal. It's where the eateries are plentiful and the competition fierce! I googled Mai Xiang Yuan Dumpling Chinatown and they are known for extremely juicy dumplings. I was super excited to try it and seeing the place packed upon entry is always a good sign! From the moment you walk in, you are greeted and told that they are a cash only establishment. However, the server points out that there's an ATM machine in house. Or, you can take your bills to a currency exchange just a block away. Lastly they will also take U.S dollars, so all good! There was only one female server when I was there, and it was hard to get her attention. It took awhile to get our orders in, as she was trying to get to all the tables. I had to flag her down several times, once to place my order, again for water and then for small individual plates. Lastly, when I was ready to pay the bill. Although it is a small and cozy eatery, you could see that they definitely needed more staff. The menu was not super big but it had enough dumpling varieties to keep you interested. I ordered their classic juicy pork soup dumplings, their pan fried pork and Chinese cabbage dumplings as well as their steamed pork and cilantro shrimp dumplings. Oh and also a chicken wonton soup. Dumpling portions are quite decent here, with the exception of the bowl of chicken wonton soup which I thought was rather small. Soup dumplings were indeed very juicy and had nice soup to meat ratio. The pan fried as well as steamed dumplings were all nicely done and very moist and flavorful. The chicken wonton soup was just okay and in my opinion the broth was on the bland side. I would definitely skip the soup and just order more dumplings! I would say that it's an anytime comfort food for a dumpling lover so give it a try!

Mai Xiang Yuan - dumpling shop in Montreal Chinatown, with an ATM inside (cash only)

Montréal is popular for dumplings! I suspect due to its geography, northern Chinese cuisine gained popularity in Chinatown. Mai Xiang Yuan is one spot. It resembles a hole-in-the-wall, but its dumpling logo is can't-miss. We tried a plate of 15 steamed dumplings (lamb & cilantro), along with a platter of 15 fried dumplings (pork, cilantro & shrimp). The plump steamed dumplings were flavourful with lamb juice, even before dipping in vinegar/soy sauce. The thick handmade wrappers were just ideal for such traditional dumplings. The fried dumplings were served with a crispy bottom layer, and included decent amount of pork & shrimp. However, the latter was a bit greasy so we left stuffed. Dumpling portions were quite large at reasonable prices. Note the store is cash only, but provides an ATM at the entrance if you're short on cash. Staff were sure to inform guests this was a no-cash / no-service establishment!

This place is a cash only place in Chinatown and my goodness they have such delicious and authentic dumplings! You should try them both fried and boiled, though I like boiled better. The dumpling skin is do chewy and soft and the filling is so flavorful and juicy. Highly recommend!

Excellent spot in Chinatown. Cash only, but as long as you're prepared for that I highly recommend it. The fried lamb dumplings with green onion were unbelievable! Service was polite and made us feel very welcome despite just arriving in town.

I love dumplings. Without dumplings, my life would be incredibly empty and incomplete. I go through physical withdrawal symptoms if I don't have them for more than a week! I had checked in to my hotel and needed to grab some dinner. I realized that Chinatown was a mere six minutes away by foot. I decided to do takeout by ordering online on Skip the Dishes and picking it up at the restaurant. I chose Mai Xiang. I got pan-fried pork and mushroom dumplings. I also got steamed shrimp, chive, and egg dumplings. They both came with soy and spicy dipping sauces. The staff at this restaurant were nice when I went in and picked my order. I thanked the woman and walked back to my hotel room to chow down. The pan-fried pork and mushroom dumplings were pan-fried and stuck together. Yep, they are called potstickers for a reason! I absolutely loved the filling and the flavour. They were tasty and were my favourite out of the two flavours. The steamed shrimp, chive, and egg dumplings were good. I think that they may taste better pan-fried. The filling needed more flavour. Dipping them in the soy and spicy sauces helped me eat everything up. It's a solid place to get authentic dumplings. I'd go back and try more items, and get the pork and mushroom dumplings again. (310)

I ordered noodle size #5, and the texture was just so-so--it didn't have the chewiness I was looking forward to, which was a bit disappointing. I also found the beef to be underwhelming. The slices were very thin, which can be nice in some cases, but here they felt a bit lacking in substance and didn't have much texture or flavor. It ended up being just okay and didn't add much to the overall dish. I ordered a medium bowl, but the portion was quite large--definitely more than I expected. A small would have been enough for me, so keep that in mind when ordering. We arrived around 8:30 pm and it wasn't too busy, so we were seated right away. The service was pretty good overall, and the staff was attentive without being overbearing.

I initially was going to get their soup dumplings (their specialty), but when I looked at the menu, I saw that they had Laksa ($18.99), so I couldn't resist ordering that instead. My husband prefers pan-fried dumplings over soup dumplings, so he got the pork and mushroom dumplings ($14.50) and there was a $1.99 surcharge for pan-frying (the base price is for steamed). My Laksa was huge and delicious. The broth was so rich with coconut milk and a bit spicy. It was really flavourful. The noodles had a nice chew to them. The soup also contained some decent-sized shrimp, velvetized sliced chicken, cubes of tofu and a boiled egg. I wished it had some vegetables in though because I felt very unhealthy eating just starch and protein, lol. I did enjoy it though ;) I had one of my husband's dumplings and it was good. It had ground pork in it and chopped up mushrooms. There was a slight gingery taste to it. I liked it and my husband liked them too. Service was very pleasant. The server refilled our waters regularly and I like that the water had ice in it and was very cold. I was expecting a more flavored experience and maybe that is not what they do or I could have ordered differently. The menu is huge so it is hard to know where to start. We went here because of the good Yelp reviews. Were we arrived in Chinatown there were many other places that looked great, so we loitered at the door for a minute while deciding what to do. As we loitered a family came out and noticed us and asked if were were going to Keung Kee. We said we were thinking about it and they said just go, it is the best restaurant in Chinatown. Sold. We went in, up the stairs, waited a bit, and got a table. This is the kid of place you need to bring a lot of people because that is whet it is built for, the menu is extensive, and the portions are huge. We puzzled over the menu then ordered our food. We wanted a bottle of cold sake and the waiter brought it in an ice bucket. Nice. We started with the pork dumplings. The dumplings were very goof but came in a hot thick sweet peanut sauce. With a lighter sauce these would have been outstanding. The scallop was huge and had a bunch of stuff on it. There was some good scallop flavor but it was masked with all the stuff that tasted like old oil. The noodle dish was good but also had some old oil flavor coming from somewhere. All the meats and vegetables were nice and fresh but the good sauce I think was the source of the oil. We saw a table next to us had the pork chops and was asked, what are those? So we got that too. The chops were thin bone in with a batter fried then soaked in a vinegar sauce. These would have been good as our only item with a bowl of rice. Our co-eaters there had many good looking things. I would give this a try again but would bring a few more people so we could try more stuff. Total for all that including the sake was $100 Canadian. Not bad!
