You know... the food is good and the service is nice... but EVERY SINGLE TIME I go into this establishment their parking lot gets vandalized and people get robbed! The officer than showed up to take my police report literally told me that he's handling a vandalism in this parking lot more than 1x weekly. For us, it's no longer worth it. Our car was vandalized we had nothing obvious in the car, no luggage, no bags nothing! We asked the manager for footage and she said their cameras were broken. The police officer told us that's just what they tell all their customers so that they don't have to get involved. That's such crap! The parking lot is so sketchy! read more

My memory of Mai's was this late night restaurant that you could get good Vietnamese food. Recently, I stopped by there to get some of these good memories, alas that wasn't the case today... I couldn't help but notice that there was only three people in the entire restaurant sometimes this can be the case with good places that have a lot of delivery or takeout. Also noticed that no matter where I walked in the restaurant my feet continued to slide on the floor I'm not sure if this is from grease not cleaning well enough or just what, I don't own a restaurant so I can't say. But it feels unclean. My food was overall very mediocre. You really can't mess up vermicelli noodles, but chicken was not tender, it was dry. It felt like something that had been sitting out. In Mai experience, there's no less enjoyable Viet place to eat or drink in Midtown. The food is mediocre or worse compared to half of the other Midtown Viet places. Alief would cry over these meals. And when they say 1 min, they mean 20. Mai word. And the coffee is not Viet Coffee. I've had some bad Cafe Sua Da in my day but none worse than this. Honestly. I really wish I was able to give a negative for this experience. I order $100 in food as I usually do at Mai's and reordered my standard go to which is lemongrass tofu no onions add lettuce and tomato at the bottom of the dish. I let the person answering the phone know my food allergy and made it very clear. Not only did he get the order incorrect but there was a double helping of onion as he neglected to combine the lettuce and tomato with the lemongrass tofu they were separate and both dishes had onions included. I called to let them know and let them know that was the only dish incorrect and Michelle kindly gave no regards to me letting her know of my food allergy and said all she couldn't was a discount when I order again even though that entire dish cannot be eaten. I did not ask for a refund or credit for anything else. When I kindly reminded her it is an allergy she restated discount only. Such horrible customer service! I do not recommend going to Mai's if you don't want your to be at risk. I will be reporting this to the city of houston food safety department and the bbb. So sad and I visit them often! read more

Mai's Restaurant has been my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Houston for years, and honestly it still holds that spot in my heart. The food feels truly authentic. I remember thinking my sister basic for ordering orange chicken one time. When she got her food it looked like a gourmet chef made it, orange garnish slices and everything. The best orange chicken I ever had and I don't even eat it like that. The Vietnamese rolls were crispy, fresh, and addicting. The wonton soup? Best I've ever had (I know I keep saying that). I've been ordering the bo luc lac for over ten years (it's my staple), but this time I switched it up and got the beef pho because I was in the mood for soup. It's what you would except. I can tell things haven't been quite the same since the fire, but even with that, Mai's is still my go-to and one of the few places open late when you're hungry. read more

Stopped by for a quick bite to eat on a late Friday evening. We were seated quickly. The restaurant had a decent number of patrons, which makes sense as they close at 3am. I let my Viet girlfriend order, and she chose the Hu Tieu, which was supposed to be a stir fried dish with thick noodles. We also ordered the seafood, meat, and vegetable version. Unfortunately, what came out was not what we expected. It was a thin noodle stir fried with soupy vegetables and shrimp but no meat. It was very okay in flavor, but it costed $24... Our water was brought to our table quickly, but we had no idea who our server was because he/she never stopped by. We had to flag down a random worker to put in our order and get the check. The place is clean and has a good size dining room, parking is accessible with two parking lots around the back, the staff knows the menu inside out and upside down, and as for the food, they have a lot of options from pho to vermicelli, rice plates, seafood, pork, beef and anything in between. Everything is fresh every time and super tasty. Some of the can't miss items from when we go are number 1 (fresh spring rolls with vermicelli and shrimp), 2 (Vietnamese egg rolls), and 51 (flank steak with rice). Great family-owned business with a vast traditional menu. I frequently drop in to nab a cup of coffee and egg rolls if I need to be in and out. The skin on these egg rolls is some of my favorites here as they have this balance of crunch and chew with each bite that you really have to try to understand. Coffee is not overwhelmingly sweet which I enjoy and not over diluted like most places. If you get a chance to dine in, their Shaken Beef is amazing and if you like soup, you can't go wrong with either their Pho (Vietnamese Noodle Soup), Bo Kho (Beef Stew), or Chicken Curry. Service has always been great every time I've come. Whether I'm seated at the bar or at a table, servers have always greeted me with a smile and the service time from when you're seated till your meal is out is pretty fast. They immediately sat down and brought our drinks. The peanut sauce that came with the spring roll didn't have much peanut flavor and more hoisin flavor. Mai's, what has happened? Did you lose your Vietnamese roots? This was always one of my favorite places, maybe because I feel like this was a Houston institution. Something about have one family owner work this restaurant and another working the same style of restaurant (Van Loc) right down the street but Van Loc is gone and we were left with Mai's so Mai's is/was a favorite....until a few nights ago. Things have certainly changed and not for the best. Vietnamese coffee is now served premade! What? We lose the fun? In 38 years, I have only sat on the left hand side of the restaurant one other time. Mind you there may be 3 tables in this area. Who wants to sit away from all of the patrons? The place wasn't busy. Not sure the rational behind this but I'll let it go. Next the food. Definitely dumbed down to gross Americanized Vietnamese food. Was looking forward to a dish I've gotten here many times before but this time, it came out differently. Not just differently but cooked differently, presented differently. I brought it to their attention, watched the discussions between the waiter, head waiter, kitchen staff and they finally brought me the corrected dish. Sad to see that if you're not Asian, you will not experience true Asian food. Houston is known for great food and it's sad when some of the greats dumb down their food. Stick to your roots, stick to the flavors that people come in for. Next, the pho. There is a reason people don't make this at home. You just can't replicate the hours it takes to make this flavorful broth. Not here. The broth lacked the umami flavor you would expect. Absolutely no depth to the broth. Save this order for somewhere else. Now for the fried rice. How can you go wrong? Oh you can. Order fried rice here if you want the flavor of oil and soy sauce. That was it. Oil and soy sauce. Where is all of the Vietnamese flavor? This place was always packed, the food was amazing and place was fun. I love a late night authentic food spot! I came in late night to a bustling crowd. Staff was very quick to find us a seat despite us not having reservations and having a full house. When we were seated, we were given physical menus as well as the QR codes on the table. Staff was attentive to our drinks and provided us refills without request. Food was delicious and fresh! I got the Bun Bo Hue, one of my personal favorites, and was provided with fresh herbs with the perfect amount of crunch in an aromatic, piping hot, genuinely flavorful soup. My friend, who isn't as accustomed to Vietnamese cuisine was surprised to find that the chicken was tender and seasoned well, as he is generally a picky eater. I used to go to this restaurant frequently a few years ago. They had the best wonton soup with pork belly in it. Delicious. We decided to go there because it had been awhile. There was no pork belly in the soup & the chicken in my vermicelli bowl wasn't very appetizing. The chicken was dry & inedible. When I brought this to the attention to the manager when he checked to see if we were doing well I brought up the dry chicken. He told me "chicken is always dry & should order pork" Huh? He said it several times. What an insult to my intelligence. I cook moist chicken...every other Vietnamese restaurant I've been to the chicken was certainly not dry. He brought me a piece of pork that was like cardboard. My recommendation is to pass it by on your way to Kim Son. Chicken is consistently moist & delicious. read more

I used to love coming to Mai's, but unfortunately our last visit really turned me away from wanting to come back. From the beginning, our server was extremely rude. The first thing he asked was how we were splitting the checks, and when we said separate, he immediately seemed annoyed. I understand that splitting checks for a larger group (there were 9 of us) can be inconvenient, but he had an attitude and told us we needed to group up because he wasn't going to do all that work. To make things easier for him, we agreed to just do one big tab. Later, he accidentally knocked my flowers off the table and didn't apologize or try to pick them up. His attitude continued throughout the night. When someone at our table asked what protein they could add to their side of rice, he snapped back and told them to just order a plate off the menu. As someone who has worked in the service industry, I understand how busy and stressful it can be, but his attitude was unprofessional and unwelcoming. I was also charged the full bill ($231) in addition but only discovered it due to receiving texts from my credit card company for BOTH transactions. When we brought it to the servers attention and management on duty, we were told it was a mistake and the general manager was on vacation so it would take 7-10 days for someone to get back with me. I called several times but they say the general manager is out. Management has not returned my call and done nothing to correct this. WATCH OUT! I brought my husband here on the third leg of our date night after dancing it up at Miss Carousel along with our appetites. This was his first time dining here and my second time. We arrived around 1:30 AM on a Saturday(technically Sunday) and got parking right up front but there is additional parking on the back/side and across the street. It wasn't packed at that time, but when we left around 3 AM there was a line. We were greeted by the front desk, and security personnel (love to see it) then seated quickly. Our drink orders were taken shortly after by a friendly server. After looking over the menu, he decided on the Chicken Pho and I decided on the shrimp fried rice and their beloved Cha Gio. I was hooked on their fried egg rolls after my initial visit. I'm a self-proclaimed Cha Gio snob lol so when I see they are wrapped with rice paper that's an automatic plus. I have a list of my Top 10 Cha Gio in Texas if anyone is curious. Our food arrived about 15 minutes later piping hot. I swear they must have 30 people back there cooking and they know drunk people be impatient lol. Hubs loved his giant serving of Chicken Pho and said it was one of the best he's ever had. Once again, the Cha Gio was fresh, flavorful, and filling. They gave me so much lettuce, carrots, and fish sauce I was in heaven. The shrimp fried rice portion was huge and there was plenty of shrimp. Overall it was delicious but only after adding salt, pepper, chili oil, and soy sauce so take that with a grain of salt. I chose to give this restaurant 5 stars because of the location, fast service, friendly staff, AND the fact that it's open so late. So I wanted to give this place a good write up but I can't. What really didn't work for me was their service. This isn't on the person that greeted us or sat us down. It was the waitress that was assigned to our table. We were waiting for the rest of our party to arrive. The waitress came to our table didn't say hi or introduce herself at all and just ask "ready to order?" We stated we are waiting for the rest of our party. The waitress didn't say anything else and just walked off. Didn't ask if we wanted a drink or water or anything. The waitress was rude and unprofessional. We were also greeted with physical menus from the person that sat us we ordered our food ahead of time and the physical menus were taken. When our friends showed up the waitress pointed to the barcode on the center of the table when they had asked for a physical menu (which were less than 6-8ft away) Food was okay, the only thing I enjoyed the most was their Vietnamese Coffee.
