Kinda dingy place, but the tea and scone we got were really good. Good place to stop and relax.

The cakes are pretty good, the street view incredible for people watching (if you can grab a table in there) and everything is reasonably priced. It's a little slice of quirky Paris without having to go further than Soho. Hidden downstairs is a sweet little boutique selling a neat range of clothes for those a little more fashion adventurous. The staff are always friendly and happy to help, too. The only reason it's 3 stars is just due to how busy it gets, you have to really get there at the right time or it's overflowing with so many tourists and shopping bags, it's a little difficult to move around (or sometimes get into your seat) without bumping into someone. read more

I first went to the Maison Bertaux café on Greek street when I was taking a lady out on a date. Unfortunately for me the date was a little unsuccessful, however the café itself, I thought, was excellent. It's tiny and decorated in a very French fashion; very twee with lots of little knickknacks decorating the walls. I found this to be quite entertaining and quite authentic (if a little stereotypical) of the kind of eateries and patisseries one might find in Montmartre, Paris. They have a very plentiful selection delicate and colourful cakes and pastries, as well as a large variety teas and coffees to satisfy the eclectomaniac in you. A little expensive, and the service was a little upfront for my liking, but I have since been back for this pleasant little break from it's Soho surroundings. read more

The pastries look delicious! I have yet to try, but next time I am in the area..definitely. I tried the cafe o lay which is suppose to be like french coffee. I went in a huge group, so I think one of the servers who brings the coffee thought everyone had one, so he put my coffee in front of my friend even though i was like "oh that's mine.." awkward much? It's 2.50 for a cup. It has two floors, as well as outside seating. It's interesting placement....It's one of the oldest cafe places around since the 1870s or something. My friends ordered tea, and they give you your own teapot! so Cute. You pay at the end when you leave. read more

This could have been a great place. It's a nice tea room, the ground floor is lovely, the cakes look nice and the old man at the counter is kind. So what's wrong with it? Well... everything that "looks" nice is actually not. I mean the cakes are mediocre at best, some are better than other but in general they are low quality. And some of them are definitely old and stale. Teas are good however, and the general feeling you get from this place is good. It's a pity. I wish I wasn't such a sucker for these kind of places. I come in here for the ambience mostly, and to enjoy a hot cup of tea, but everywhere I look there's mouthwatering cheesecakes and eclairs and pastries being devoured by triumphant mouths, and I'm instantly won over. The team room has been open since 1871 and still retains the yesteryear charm of a rustic albeit cluttered French cafe. The cabinets proudly display china and photos from a bygone era and the windows are stacked with enticing nibbles to lure the unsuspecting passer by. My personal weakness are the raspberry and cream tarts but the savoury quiches are also very popular amongst my friends and I. It is pricey though: £3.50 or more for a slice. Ouch. read more

Not a bad place. First, the pros. They have a good selection of cakes we tried the blueberry cheesecake and the profiterole cake. The latter was pretty amazing and quite original, I highly recommend trying it! The cheesecake was good, but nothing special. The downstairs area is rather cramped. Although the service was fast, it wasn't very warm or friendly. You can see that the owner has made an effort to decorate the place, but all the pink is a bit weird. Makes it look like a dollhouse! We both ordered coffee, which is definitely not their forte it was very weak. As mentioned by others, the price is somewhat of a shocker came up to £6.40 per person for a coffee and a cake!! In most other coffee shops it won't come up to more than £4, let alone a fiver. For the price, its definitely not worth going back. read more

I've been back to this little cake shop a few times taking different friends with me. The cakes really are delicious and priced at about £3.90 each. Others have said that's expensive, but I'm pretty happy to pay it every now and again. The peppermint tea was also yummy. The biggest problem though is the lack of space at the counter. Tables line the front of the shop, so you can't peruse the selection of cakes on offer from outside. Once inside, it's a bit of a panic to choose one as any sort of queue blocks the doorway. I've eaten an awful lot of cake in London (it's a hazard of the job - http://www.domesticsluttery.com/ ) and I'm forever on the hunt for the perfect cake. Here's a clue: It's not in Maison Bertaux. Don't get me wrong, the cafe is stunning. Really pretty. Vintage shabby chic, bric-a-brac everywhere and a nice little vibe. Even the staff were more friendly than I expected (I'd been warned they can be pretty rude). But we weren't in the cafe. We were in the little side area. Which has as much ambience as a waiting room in a train station. And had my cake been good, I could have forgiven them. But, my cake was shit. I'd have complained, but there was no one to complain to without going back into the main cafe. My friend and i swapped. His cake was awesome. I had cake envy. I'm a sucker for apple pie. And Maison Bertaux put crumble topping on theirs - how could I not be seduced? Unfortunately, the topping had a layer of uncooked pasty goo (as is often the case with apple pie) and I wasn't impressed. At £4 a pop I expected better. They do a blinding cup of tea, but if you're wedged in by the door, you've got jugs and pots and plates all over the place, you can't pour your tea without throwing cake on the floor or elbowing someone in the head. You spend half you time saying sorry for getting in the way of other people. This does not make for a relaxing experience. And at the end of all that, they charge you £13.10 for two pots and tea and two slices of cake. Some people might fall for its charms, but I wasn't impressed. You won't listen to me, you'll go anyway, but I won't be back. Although I will be putting crumble topping on my apple pies from now on. read more

I agree with what lots of reviewers have already said - the coffee is no good, the tables are cramped and the prices will make your hair stand on end. But - the decor is lovely and you will feel as if you have discovered a little Soho gem. A quirky place for a pre- or post-theatre visit (if I am correct they are open until late) and, weather allowing, the outside tables are a nice place to sit and enjoy your cake and tea (listen to everyone who said that the coffee is horrid). Possibly the best croissants in London. This place vies for that Honour with Truc Vert. Not really for business meets but very good fun. Slightly odd decor and charmingly quirky staff. Highly reccommended. I suspect that a journalist would describe it as "a soho institution" or some other nonsense. read more

Ah Berties, and the joy of the croissants! Just don't mention the coffee, as others politely haven't. It has got to be the worst in Soho, and has always been, from way back when the real Bertaux ran the place. I've ordered it hopefully for years thinking that they'd have to buy a new machine someday, especially as the general standard rose Never mind. The pots of tea are great, made with loose leaf, the peppermint especially good. And in the summer there's fresh lemonade if they feel like making it. Everything else is fab, and nearly all the best of its kind in London. Now too expensive to while away afternoons with a pot or two of tea, a ham and cheese croissant, a fruit tart and a notebook - it's a place to treat and be treated. read more

Great Soho cafe with attentive service and delicious cakes, pastries and tarts. Upstairs feels really a part of cafe culture and much more French than London. Arty graffiti and striking photographic portraits on the walls. Bright primary coloured curtains and as everyone has mentioned - huge pots of tea. Highly recommended! read more

Cannot wait to go back when the Bastille day celebrations are in full force - but for now will be satisfying myself with regular trips back to work my way through the 'to-die-for' cakes. The display window will really draw you in and there's no disappointment in the tasting but the only coffee option is plain filter!? so you'll have to go for chocolat chaud or tea's. My coffee was not great but the mint tea was quite fine. Placing our order was a little tricky (small, cramped area downstairs) but we scored a bulls-eye by nabbing a seat outside on the sidewalk. I faced out in typical Parisienne style and watched the world go by as I munched my way through lovely, rich chocolate cakey ganachey bliss. There is an upstairs tea room for colder days and the toilets could benefit from a deep clean (moi=clean freak) but I love this little discovery and know it will become a regular stop off in Soho for me. The tea shop had a cute and cosy vibe, though the scones and tea were a bit overpriced and I wouldn't go regularly. The quality was almost worth it - the scones tasted amazing and cam with a generous portion of cream. They were also pretty generous with the amount of tea and even supplied an extra pot of hot water. Overall a sweet little cafe with friendly staff. I do not get the hype at all. The seating upstairs was so cramped, with the whole building feeling dingy and outdated. A trip to the toilets was reminiscent of a scene from the movie Ted and resulted in me wanting to leave immediately! I ate a quiche which I asked to be warmed but was still cold and eggy. If you didn't know about this little gem of a bakery you'd never find it on your own. It's in an odd location, a few seedy shops surround it but don't let that stop you. The hostess was quick to greet us and and explain what was freshly made that day. We ordered a slice of cheese cake and some sorbet and took a seat in their cozy seatting area next door. Holy portion size batman! I couldn't even finish my sorbet. I also didn't want to give up the cheesecake that was suppose to be for my husband :) The barista guy was super cute and polite. I'm sure there are other places that serve exquisite pastries around the London area, but Maison Bertaux is an excellent French bakery located on Greek Street. There is, however, another great bakery around the corner - Patisserie Valerie. Maison is a nice place to sit outside and enjoy your pastry of choice with tea/coffee on an afternoon, while Patisserie Valerie is nice to grab something on the go. Anyway, this place was a top notch French bakery outside of France and I recommend it anyone who visits the area. read more

The place has some cakes that are ok and seem to be homemade, but overall it feels a bit touristy. It has only a few tables and there are always people waiting for you to leave. The interior has also seen already some better days, a renovation is needed some time. It seems there hasn't been anything invested in years. Windows are not properly closing and tables and chairs look like they have been thrown out by somebody else... There are better options in the area! read more

Nice traditional and old fashioned cafe with a amazing selection of cakes and sweets that are beautifully displayed on the window. In this cafe it is all about having a tea and cake. They serve the tea in big pots and it lasts up to three cups. The cafe is rather expensive so I only go there if and when I feel like I have deserved the treat. This delicious, characterful little cafe has been serving beautiful French pastries and cakes since the late 19th century. My main gripe used to be the cramped quarters, but happily they recently expanded to next door - and "freshened up" a bit as well. Most offerings are of the highly decadent, sweet - and expensive - type... but I'm most smitten with their simple croissants and dijon slices (a mustardy cheese pizza thing). Note that the tea is MUCH better than the coffee here. Also note that the cool fashion boutique, Shop at Maison Bertaux, in the basement of MB is closing any day now... sad. read more

Quirky brilliant little Soho cafe with too many tempting cakes and pastries. I had one of the coconut macaroons (to go with my nickname) and it was so big and filling it could have passed for a cake! My friend and I stumbled in here on accident. It's adorable, relatively inexpensive considering the quality, and the nice man working "Alexi" was so sweet and talked to us the whole time we ate. We tried the rum chocolate truffle-- I highly recommend it as an after dinner or midday just because treat. Though it was a little cold right because we sat in the front and the door kept opening and letting in the draft between the chocolate, the chamomile tea, and the quaint nature of this teeny shop we had a great experience and hope to return soon! read more

This charming little tea and cake shop is definitely on the expensive side at around a tenner for a pot of tea and a (generous) slice of cake, but it's the sheer character of the place, along with the inimitable Madame Bertaux herself that give you that Value Added Tax. The cakes are delicious, too. And even if you have to share a table with other people, it's a friendly rather than intrusive affair. Last time I went, the walls and staircase were full of the artwork of Noel Fielding, of The Mighty Boosh fame. Too expensive for me- despite the fact I had been warned!! I think the problem is that prices are not clearly marked- expect £5 for a single tart or cake and £3 for a pot of tea. Both the cake and tea were delicious- they use loose tea, so don't forget to use the strainer!! The deco does not live up to the prices charged- scruffy and ecentric to the point of wierd!! Had cheese cake and eclairs. Their cheese cake is so good so fluffy, I wanna back and try again. Eclairs are just fine, the chocolate glaze tasted like cheap syrup. Also they really need to deal the toilet, the room smells like you sit in the restroom having your food. read more

Quirky would be the best word to describe this venue. Its pricey and beautifully arranged cakes and dainty china is at odds with the slightly tatty pink decor. Upstairs, Noel Fielding (of Mighty Boosh fame)'s felt tip scribble on the walls still bears testimony to his art exhibition held there a few years back. For me, this adds to the charm of the place. I like it a little bit scruffy and dread the day they do it up, but I know that it's a contentious point.
