From the Chicken and Churros to the Tres Leches Pancakes and Breakfast Entrees, this place is a pleasant surprise. Pancakes were really good but still definitely needed syrup, of which they had none. I ended up putting powdered sugar in my cream to make a bit of a glaze. So stash some syrup in bag if you're a pancaker. According to my guests the chicken and churros were great. The steak was two HUGE pieces. The rice was perfectly cooked. The refried beans, salad and potatoes were very flavorful. The tacos were great and very filling. We all left with doggy bags. Easily one of the best Brunch options in the Buffalo area with delicious non-alcoholic options beyond just pop. Ambiance is fabulous. Plenty of space for any size group. First as all the pics show this restaurant is very cheerful with a variety of art and Mexican decor to entertain your eyes! Despite how busy it was the service was excellent. The staff was attentive and on top of any beverage refills. There wasn't much ready to order vegetarian food but they were able to make most dishes vegetarian when requested. The flan was a definite standout. Plenty of the caramelized sugar. Churros were rather oily and were disappointing. The sopas with vegetable filling was very good. I had been in once before a few years ago and it was great! Same thing today. It was busy at lunch time, but we were seated quickly. The decor sets such a vibe. I told my partner (quietly) that the salsa was delicious and that I wish there was more. A moment later, one of the servers came over and asked if we wanted more dip for the rest of our chips. He must've read my mind :). Just an example. Not being familiar with moles in general, ordering Enmoladas made me feel excited. According to our server, the mole verde was the least spicy, so that was my choice. Also, she offered to bring the mole negro and mole roje to sample, how nice! Later I learned that all moles have a very tolerable heat and the roje is our favorite. My companion decided to have Enchiladas Mixtas. The beef enchilada was so flavorful! The red sauce tasted similar to the tomato sauce I make for the Polish dish 'gołąbki', mild and buttery, just delightful. On our previous visit we had an unusual appetizer from the specials menu. Esquite, a corn dish, was a great addition to our meal and left us wanting more. Unfortunately, it wasn't available this time. We tried Memelitas instead. Memelitas are thick, fried or toasted cakes made from masa (corn dough). It's a simple dish with a long history. Ours were toasted and topped with salsa verde, red onion and queso fresco. It has been a few months since I have been able to make my way back to Maizel, which is one of my favorite Mexican places to go. We had a cousins dinner on a Tuesday night. My cousin visiting from Italy was craving Mexican. I said I know of the perfrct place. Tuesdays they have all yoy can eat tacos for 19.99. We didnt get that. I got the mole negro which was wonderful , as usual. My one cousin got chimichangas and my other cousin ordered the burrito bowl. Both really enjoyed their food. The chips and salsa was good and we added guacamole which also was tasty. We split the app with the four different Mole sauces. I was most excited about this but, found all of them to be relatively the same. All four, served over taquitos lacked flavor and didn't stand out. My chimichangas were good as were the tacos and all the sides. I wish I could say more. On St. Patrick's Day, I thought to myself for an Early Dinner to stray away from eating Irish Food and go down a different Path. So why not try out someplace that I heard is A-Maize-ing, where better than Maizal all the way out in the Amherst Area. We arrived just before 5 PM, we were sat near the door that goes in and out of the Kitchen. I loved that this place looked like a fun and festive place to Party. Even there was an Upper Party Deck that you can reserve for Private Parties. Once we sat down, our server brought us over some Complimentary Chips and some Sauces to dip them in. Let me tell you, they were really good. All Housemade sauce of Red Chili, Salsa Verde and Mole Negro. You take a chip, dip immediately and then let your Taste Buds be thrilled by Flavor tingle of Tart and Herbaceous Salsa Verde, Mild Chili sauce or Mole Negro. A Sauce that is so Dark, complex in Flavor made from Chilies and Bitterness from the Dark Chocolate. This sauce has Smoky, Sweet, Rich and Spicy all in one. With the way these sauces tasted, this was a nice way to welcome us for the Start of what was going to be a Great Meal. I started off with a simple Cocktail called the Paloma with Blanco Tequila, Grapefruit, Lime and a Pinch of Salt. Refreshing drink that had big slices of Fruit floating in the Drink. This place committed to serving the most Authentic Oaxacan cuisine, before coming here I looked over the Menu online and looked very thoroughly at the Traditional Oaxacan section. I wanted to try something other than the usual Burritos or Tacos. I started off with Sopes, which were these Corn Cakes that were topped with Refried Beans, Pico de Gallo, Guacamole, Chipotle Cream and their Housemade Chorizo Sausage. The moment the plate hit the table with a thud; they looked a lot bigger than I thought they would be. The Corn cake acted as the perfect Vessel to even hold this Plethora of Ingredients that was placed on Top. The Sausage had some good flavor to it, also the cake didn't feel as heavy or dense as I thought it was gonna be. Aside from Rick ordering some Sopes with Pork Carnitas on Top, he also had Carne Asada (Skirt Steak) on a bed of Caramelized Onions with Refried Beans. He thought the Steak was ok. Grandma Carol got herself a plate of Pork Carnitas Chimichangas, that she thought (in her mind) was enough for 3 Meals for her. For my Entree, I chose one of their most popular and most Traditional. Braised Chicken (Leg & Thigh) that was topped with that Mole Negro Sauce.I could smell that smokiness right away, I took a bite and the meat from that Chicken was So Melt in your mouth. What I loved about it was that there was so much sauce that was not only coating the Chicken. But also the excess amount of Sauce around the plate surround that I can sop up with my Spoon. They brought out some Tortillas because it looked like they intentionally wanted me to eat it like a Taco. But I was too in the zone and already into it like a Shark in a Feeding Frenzy. So I took the Tortillas and sopped up as much sauce as I possibly could. Halfway through our meals, the owner of Maizal (Leonel Rosario) came out of the Kitchen. I told him that the amount of flavor packed within these dishes were unreal. His Passion and approach to true Authentic Oaxacan cuisine was truly something. He thanked me and went back in the Kitchen, we finished off the Meal with some freshly made Churros that were dusted with Cinnamon Sugar. Alongside a cup of Hot Chocolate to dip them in, they were light and Fluffy with the exterior nice and Crispy. I wish they had given us some Molten Chocolate or Caramel to dip the Churros in. But what surprised me was that our Waitress, who loved my enthusiasm for my time dining here. She gave me a complimentary slice of Dulce de Leche Cake to take home. I looked and saw a later of both Vanilla and Chocolate Sponge that was soaked ever so gently in a Milky like Caramel to give it an even sweeter more Velvety Taste to it. What I enjoyed and what I hope to do for my next visit is to keep delving into more of the Authentic Tastes and Spices that they have here. I sat at the bar was greeted right away and given a brunch menu, a happy hour menu and a drink menu. I was also brought a basket of fresh house made chips and salsa. I decided to order a virgin jalapeno margarita and the birria rolls. The margarita was hands down the best I've ever had... No premade mixes here; they fresh squeeze their ingredients and it shows! The birria rolls were also great! Despite being deep fried, they were not super greasy and the consomme, oh the consomme! The consomme was super flavorful, not greasy, had potatoes, cilantro and carrots in it. I could have eaten a bowl of it as a soup! Happy hour also has great prices! Came here based off the high reviews and I'm shocked it rated so high. I've tried it a few times now and can't get on board. Ambience is super cute, staff seems nice, but the food is simply awful. The tacos I order were always lukewarm warm, the shredded meat looks like dog food it's so saucy, and the rice is consistently overcooked. Sometimes when your plate comes out it literally looks like just a plate of slop. The food quality is just poor. You can tell the food is just sitting in the back pre prepared and thrown on the plate when you order. The refried beans are just ooze. This is my second time visiting this establishment. The first time I went was with my husband per my request. It was a cute little place and I was satisfied with the overall experience.....from good tasting food and service to loving the overall ambiance. However, yesterday I was meeting some friends for lunch, and I suggested this great little place. My friends agreed based on my recommendations. Unfortunately, the server we had was incredibly dismissive and made us wait for extremely long periods of time to receive requested items such as extra napkins, water refills and even the bill to check out. In addition she never even asked if we would like more chips for the extra guacamole I ordered. This type of service began to impact our visit and enjoyment of lunch as each one of us became very aware of her inability to care for our table in an appropriate manner compared to the booth next to us where she would stop and check on frequently, smile and make small talk. Us..? It was like we had the plague. After ordering fried ice cream and really really needing more than ONE napkin for 3 people we requested napkins. She had not returned after a solid 15 minute wait. I asked the hostess for additional napkins and she was very nice. I also asked the hostess if our server was related to the management. Yes she was. Huh. Did this explain her sense of entitlement. She/her family owns the place so "who cares?" "I can do what I want" and I hope this is not the case for server Yadi. I will say that the hostess must have told Yadi and she did come to our booth and explained that she was bartending and serving as a waitress. I told her I appreciated her explanation but did not believe that based on how our booth was treated compared to the booth directly next to us. This is not merely a one sided review as both of my fun loving friends have the same opinion as me. This place has been on my list for a while and I am pleasantly impressed with how the food was. We ordered take out and it was still hot and fresh when we got home with it. We got the chicken tacos and the birria tacos. Each came with a side of rice and beans. They also came with a side of chips and salsa. The homemade chips and salsa were incredible. There's something so good about homemade chips vs the store bought chips. The salsa was mild but had a spicy kick after a while. The tacos were both very delicious. They were perfectly topped with the lettuce and sauce. The pickled onion was also a good touch for the toppings as well. Next time we get food from here, we are definitely eating there. I have mixed feelings about Maizal. Upon entering, like most Mexican restaurants, you get the cultural ambience. I really enjoy this setting as it reminds me of being on vacation! It didn't take too long to be seated but everything took forever after that. However, we went on a Sunday, and after we finished our meal the waitress told us they've only been open 4 Sundays and were slow the first couple of weeks so staffing was lower for the unexpected crowd that day. So it's probably a kink that will be worked out but we were there for over an hour. I was also really cold the whole time I was there. The food was ok. It wasn't bad or anything; just average. What I DID like that I haven't had elsewhere were their burrito wraps which were seasoned. It was delicious. I had the ultimate burrito carnitas which are huge; but if you look at my picture you will see it's not wrapped ... I just want to note that's because I requested it that way. It usually comes rolled up and I saw someone's brought out that way and it was like WOW! HUGE! Its like the size of a small loaf of bread! My friend also got a burrito and enjoyed his. For my carnitas, I think the meat could use some sort of sauce or to be seasoned more in the slow cooking process. That's my take. The best carnitas I often will not use the toppings or wraps because I just want the flavor of the delicious meat. Again, it wasn't bad, but could use a little something extra to amp up the flavor. I didn't care much for the chips and salsa. The chips weren't warmed up and the salsa was extra cold. Wasn't my favorite.. Also there is a bar to sit at and seating upstairs. We arrived right on time and they had our reservation all set to go with a "reserved" on the table with chips and salsa ready to jump into! Impressed! The menu isn't overwhelming of every possible thing you can have but honed to creative spins, as well as traditional Mexican food. Food was pretty good, I got the shrimp taco/ quesadilla special. It DEFINITELY needs a sauce as the quesadilla/ taco real dries it out. My husband got the pork verde bowl which he said was awesome. Must be a yearly ritual...a year ago around this time, I went to different Mexican restaurant (Andale - on Transit road, just down the street from Maizal in East Amherst) and came away with the same feeling and over all rating. Good but not spectacular. Solid 3/5 over all. Here, at Maizal I expected more. The previous Yelp reviews gave Maizal a 4 or 5 rating. I was dining in with my partner on 2/5/22 Saturday evening. I was very much looking forward to a kicking back and drinking a margarita - my all time favorite cocktail. In the rocks with salt. Not frozen. In comparison, at Andale, it was a take out order and no cocktails. The atmosphere at Maizal is definitely a 5/5. Really liked the cultural Mexican accents. Woodsy, rustic too. Lively. Get your fiesta on! The bar area is nice, near the steps leading up to the loft. Tequila bottles of various types over the doorway too. A bit too heavy on the Frida Kahlo facial depiction/decor though. I admire Frida's art. Don't get me wrong. Just don't need her staring at when I'm in the bathroom! Speaking of bathroom - I think they prepared the food faster than I could pee! Seriously, I was only in the bathroom a couple of minutes. When I returned, dinner was already served. No time to sip on that huge margarita or nibble on the chips and salsa. Later I saw the time stamped on our bill. It stated 8:22 pm. They close at 9 pm on a Saturday night. Really? I know this is the suburbs but still. I can only conclude they wanted to get us "late diners" fed and outta there to clean up and go home. As it turned out, the margaritas were great in appearance and description only - "fruity, squeezed fresh lime and orange juices, orange liquor, homemade sour mix and blanco tequila" - what tequila?? Was there any alcohol? Maybe it got lost in that large size mason jar. Weak. And pricey at $10.95 each. One third of our bill was for two of these huge, disappointing, margaritas $21.90 thrown away on fancy juicy drinks with floating fruit. What a waste. Should have ordered shots of tequila for that cost! Margaritas rating 1/5. The salsa was not appetizing - kind of like other Yelpers stated - spaghetti sauce like. Rating 1/5. So it didn't matter we didn't have time to eat the chips and salsa. Food - 4/5 entree rating. My partner and I usually order the grilled (fajita) fare. We are not fans of cheesy, carby rice filled burritos. We got the Camarones chipotle (grilled shrimp and pineapple, Spanish rice) and El Tropico - (grilled pineapple, shrimp and chicken breast combo, Spanish rice, refried beans, citrus slaw. And tons of grilled onions). Could be less onions. Good food. Solid. But not - wow! A little bland. Thought the camarones chipotle would be a tad spicy. It was not. Generous portions. Good Mexican food in WNY is few and far between, but I've finally found another place to add to my rotation whenever that taco craving strikes me. Maizal is tucked away in the Northtowns, but is absolutely worth driving over to. They've got a large menu that boasts lots of traditional Mexican fare. My boyfriend and I ordered takeout from here on a Friday night. I opted for the beef tacos while he got a shrimp quesadilla. We also got their queso and guac combo, because truly, who can resist? My tacos were delicious, as was my boyfriend's quesadilla, and they both came with your standard side of rice and beans. The portion sizes were huge, I had to tap out and save some of mine for later! The queso and guac were also really tasty, and again the portion size was massive. They also include chips and salsa with every takeout meal, which is a nice touch since not every Mexican place offers that. Overall, the food was delicious and the prices were great. If we lived closer we would definitely order from here more often, but I see us coming back in the future! read more
