I also smelled some type of musty like water damage kind of set me off already let's just say The short rib dinner was uneditable. ***3 1/2 stars*** I'm genuinely curious how most people find out about this place. I literally noticed it on Google Maps while I was looking around for something else in the area, and was completely confused, based on my knowledge of Kenilworth. "Wait, isn't this...not where restaurants are? I'm pretty sure this is is in the middle of a bunch of auto repair shops." Well it was, but thankfully it has a giant cow mural painted on the side to distinguish itself from the other establishments in the neighborhood. My top tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality and I came here for lunch on Sunday, deciding to try a new place (we have a regular spot in the area of town that DOES have restaurants). It was easy to find and wasn't COMPLETELY surrounded by auto shops - this is also on the edge of a residential neighborhood, but they definitely do have the monopoly on restaurants here. (My chum did peer along the sides of the building to make sure it was open/safe, but for the record I thought that was unnecessary; as mentioned, there was a cow mural.) The interior is very black and white, which now in hindsight feels like a bovine homage as well; I literally don't think there was another color factored into their interior design. We walked in around 2PM, I believe, and the restaurant was completely deserted for about the first hour or so. By the time we left, there were maybe two other parties but it was never remotely crowded, and aside from a mildly miserable toddler in the corner, we were the youngest people in there by 20 years. We sat at the bar in view of the Mets game/tribute to Doc Gooden, and had complete control over the TV, which is always a subtle perk. We'd accidentally eaten some high quality pastries earlier in the afternoon so we weren't in the best position to succeed here, but we still put together a respectable performance. We split some burrata and calamari, as well as the 22-ounce cowboy steak on the specials menu, with mashed potatoes on the side. It's also possible a pitcher of white sangria showed up. My chum liked the food a bit more than I did, but it was decent for what it was. My preference is for the calamari to be on the crispier side, but this was softer than I like it and the texture felt chewier than usual as a result. The steak was tasty (I requested that cut specifically as an homage to Cowboy Carter, but I admit that might not be the best approach when ordering food) but had a fair amount of fat/gristle that needed to be cut off. Honestly I don't know enough about this cut to know if that's unusual or not. The star for me was the mashed potatoes, which were delicious and I wish had been accessible to me when I got my wisdom teeth out. The sangria was made to order (which I liked, but my far more sophisticated chum pointed out limited the ability of the flavors to set), but I enjoyed it. A rosy hue almost immediately showed up on my cheeks. The service was excellent. We were pretty much the only game in town for a good chunk of our visit, but notwithstanding that, the bartender/waiter was almost always within eyeline/earshot and checked on us regularly. We were both impressed by his knowledge of the specials menu, which was pretty extensive, and he "read the room" well (aka knew we were taking our time and didn't rush us through the experience). Angelo himself showed up once or twice as well to ask how we liked the steak, which was a super nice touch. This isn't an insanely high-end steakhouse (not an insult) so the price point is pretty competitive, all things considered. There really wasn't anything here though that truly separated Angelo's from any other steakhouse in the area, but it was perfectly fine. It's a very short walk from my chum's HQ, so the convenience and service puts this one just over the top for me. read more

A very interesting find and a must-try if you are anywhere close to the area. For a place that doesn't seem to even have a website it is well hidden. If you are meeting someone there you are probably going to have the feeling someone set you up to be whacked instead of going to dinner as you go down the street thinking there is no way a restaurant is down here. Ah, but there it is. Parking is not an issue, but at the same time not very organized. It is not like there are "spots" in the "lot" -- more like some gravel and obstacles in your way, go figure it out yourself why don't you. Inside, everything changes, and it couldn't be more welcoming. Service is spectacular and Angelo is visible and checking in on you as well. At our table all the appetizers were top notch--the fried calamari was light and crispy, the smoke bacon was AMAZING, the shrimp and garlic--well, I would be happy with just the bread bowl alone when all the shrimp are gone, the mozzarella carroza was great too. There was a house salad in between the journey to the main course, which was a light break to the main meal. For my main I had a short rib gnocchi on special. Overall a great dish but the short rib could have been a better cut. Assuming it sees the light of day, "K-Town," a modern-day Sopranos TV series, had some filming done here. Solid 3.5 star neighborhood place to go for a steak if you are in the neighborhood to play Baltastrul Golf Club. Since it's a neighborhood spot, the vibe is calm and relaxed. We sat at the bar and primarily went for cocktails however the 4 of us shared. Variety of menu items from appetizer section of calamari, steak, salad, and everything was pretty solid and prices were reasonable. I went to Angelo's for dinner tonight for my sisters birthday and throughly enjoyed it. My sister loves steakhouses, so we researched a place close by to go to. Our waitress Carly was very sweet and attentive. We ordered a bunch of apps including the shrimp, crab cakes, mozzarella and tomato, and breaded clams. They were all delicious! Went for an early dinner with the Fam. Service was fantastic! Granted, we were the only ones there, but you can tell the staff are squared away. Ambiance was great. Clean, neat, nice decor. I had the wildboar sausage and peppers app, and calamari. Sausage was excellent. The sides were very good. I came for steak but went with the lasagna special; Dee-lish! Cooked perfectly, nice portion sizes. Simply excellent and frankly could go head to head with any of the other local steakhouses but a nicer decor. What an incredible owner, chef, restaurant Angelos Steakhouse is a hidden gem, nestled away on a quiet suburban street, this little building that resembles from the outside a local dive bar much more than a steakhouse surly packs a Tyson-esque punch. One thing, very underrated about this restaurant, before I get into the food, is the well trained, attentive staff. As someone who worked over 7 years in the service industry, you can tell by the staff at Angelos that they all truly care, making the whole dining experience that much more enjoyable. Our staff constantly came over replacing us with new plates, drinks, complimentary food and more. But onto the food, this steakhouse has everything you want... and more. My family ordered multiple orders of the thick cut bacon served with a hot honey siracha sauce, that is to die for. We also ordered the Hotsy totsy shrimp that is served with jumbo shrimp and a spicy marinara, that tastes straight from Italy. Last on the appys, we ordered the calamari; good not great but definitely ok. For the steak, I mean cmon! Just a real deal good piece of meat (a little less seasoning than I prefer), but so well cooked and each bite more mouth watering and succulent than the next. My family literally at the end was gnawing at the bone like savage animals looking to get one last bite of meat. We ordered the Tomohawk and the bone In ribeye, which is enough to feed an army. Also recommend the creamed spinach. Overall, Angelos is a sure hit and I would recommend it to anyone, especially over the overhyped Roots in Summit! I hope they expand the menu next. I knew before we ate dinner that this was going to be a mediocre experience. Let me break it down: 1. Waited at the hostess stand for 5 minutes before anyone bothered to greet us. When the hostess finally arrived she looked at me and said, "yes?", as if me showing up for my reservation and being seated was a huge hassle. 2. The restaurant was less than 1/3 filled on a Saturday night at 7:30. 3. Cheap diner butter packets already sitting at the table. While I honestly don't care about the quality of the butter I do care how it's presented, particularly at a higher end restaurant. It would be more aesthetically pleasing and add some class to put the butter in a ramekin and bring it out with the bread. 4. Welcomed by a server who introduced herself and asked us if we wanted to drinks. We said we will we wait on drinks and would like to look at the menu. She left the table without asking us if it was our first time dinning at the restaurant or telling us the specials. 5. Welcomed by a different server 5 minutes later who introduced himself and asked if we wanted drinks. Got pushy when we declined to order drinks at that moment and said, "well maybe you'll change your mind." Seemed annoyed that I acquiesced and ordered a Diet Coke (I don't drink alcohol). Dinner itself was not great: 1. The porterhouse for 2 was ordered medium-rare and served medium. Also, it was fairly obvious that they used a small porterhouse and added some really fatty strip steak to compensate for the lack of filet. 2. The loaded baked potato was not loaded nor fully cooked through. I regret not sending it back. 3. The sautéed spinach wasn't even a full portion. It was like someone in the kitchen said "We're almost out of spinach. Fuck it, let's just serve half a portion." 4. There's no way those deserts are made in-house. The tiramisu came in a plastic dish and the strawberry shortcake was partially frozen. If they are made in-house then stop making them in bulk, freezing them and then defrosting them when you serve them. The bill didn't justify the food/service. Honestly, if you're going to charge NYC prices in suburban NJ then step up your game. I had high hopes based on other reviews and was really disappointed. read more

I was driving in from out of town and was running a bit late. I called the restaurant and they were very kind about allowing me to push the reservation by 30 minutes. We were seated pretty quickly once we arrived. However, our waiter was taking long to come over so I started looking around and noticed he's the ONLY waiter for the whole restaurant!! When he finally got to us, we let him know we'd be skipping appetizers and going straight to the main course. That's when he began to apologize for what we were about to experience. We wait an hour and a half for food!!! I found this to be completely unacceptable and unorganized. Thankfully, the pitcher of red sangria was delicious and the company was good. My group had the Italian long hots, cold antipasto and thick bacon everything was fresh and incredible. We visited Angelos early on Saturday evening without a reservation. While we did get seated, the hostess seemed annoyed with us even though there were open reservations available on Open Table. It appeared this restaurant caters to a regular crowd. Although it was our waiter's first day, he was energetic and pleasant, and the food was delicious. We had the stuffed artichoke as an appetizer and one of us had steak, the other pork osso buco and my husband had pork chops. The only downside was that the steak was supposed to be 18 ounces, but it appeared very small but was tasty, nonetheless. The osso buco was supposed to come over mased potatoes but was served with rigatoni with no explanation as to why there was a substitution. The real complaint I have is the wine. I ordered a Cabernet, and it tasted very cheap and when we googled the wine it was $7 a bottle and tasted like it. If this restaurant wants to be considered a high-end steak house, I suggest upping the wine game. Theyn also has no cocktail list. Very acceptable house salad and medium rare strip steak perfected. Stuffed Shrimp was delicious. We opted for the not so mundane Strawberry Shortcake to share. Ok so lots to unpack here...you can only eat here on the weekend if you have a reservation so that's important to know upfront. Secondly the service is just so so at best. They don't seem to have the help to accommodate how busy they are. They also are not very amenable to making changes or substitutions. Not the end of the world but again just fyi. We had high hopes based on the reviews for this newer restaurant. And I will say that it was a mix of good and bad. First, the bad: the NY strip, while cooked to the correct doneness (med-rare), was totally flavorless, absolutely no seasoning. Even worse it was full of gristle and largely inedible. A real waste of $39. Another dish, the salmon, was so overcooked that it was barely eaten. The good: the non menu specials that we ordered were actually very good. The mozz en carozza, was well prepared and the marinara was really tasty. And I had the short ribs, which were fall off the bone tender. Oh, one more thing that shocked us. Each of our kids ordered a seven dollar side of "fresh cut fries", that were very clearly low quality frozen from a bag. That's unconscionable from a restaurant that cost us over $200 for a party of four with no drinks. read more
