We have been shopping at Major Market for over 30 years, and it has truly been one of our favorite markets of all time. They carry such a nice mix of unique specialty items along with everyday groceries, which is something we have always appreciated. That said, prices have become very high compared to nearby options. I recently compared produce prices with Trader Joe's next door, and Trader Joe's was significantly less expensive. More importantly, the last several times I have shopped in Major Market's produce section, I noticed multiple bagged salads, bagged vegetables, and even some refrigerated salad dressings that were well past their expiration dates. We have also purchased their fresh garlic croutons from the front of the store for many, many years. Recently, though, the crouton pieces were cut very long rather than into normal bite-sized pieces. These were not crostinis; they were the actual croutons. The pieces were awkward to eat and, in my opinion, could even be a choking hazard because they are not cut into manageable bite-sized pieces. I'm not sure what is going on, but shoppers should be very careful and check expiration dates closely before purchasing items from the produce/refrigerated section. I also hope the crouton issue is addressed, because Major Market has been a beloved store for our family for many years. read more

This is a really nice clean market, with excellent hot pre-made food. The prices are a bit more expensive than grocery stores, but if you want a place that isn't packed and where the customer service is good, it's an nice alternative. Please keep in mind that the bags here are $0.20 here instead of the typical $0.10. Regarding the hot food, if you are a burrito fan definitely check out their pre-made carnitas burrito for $9.99. It is excellent and their salsa is really good. They had caldo de res too, which looked amazing but I haven't had a chance to try out yet. Their fried rice was tasty. I don't come here often but when I do go, I love the different items I get to see and buy. I bought individual desserts for Thanksgiving yesterday last night. I bought a slice of lemon tart, a Tuxedo cake, a Mocha cake and a Cheesecake. The best one was the cheesecake, then it was a tie between the Mocha and lemon tart. The Tuxedo one was OK. Good quality, always clean, good variety of everything. A lot of things are overpriced, you can find the same products in other grocery stores cheaper but some of their products are not easy to find somewhere else. There are a few cashiers that are not very welcoming, not necessarily rude but not polite at all! They could do better. Parking is always easy. Definitely one of the favorite places for the people of Escondido. Wish they have more locations everywhere. read more

Probably the top source for meat, fish, poultry in the area with the best steaks in town (much better than Whole Foods when it comes to the highest end USDA Prime and also Wagyu). Lots of specialty frozen food too like duck and bison. Excellent sushi and sashimi. Much better than Sprouts. Good fruit and produce selection. Locally baked breads and Julian pies. Not an organic or health mart though so you will need to go to Sprouts, Jimbos or Whole Foods to get vitamins and supplements , grass fed beef , packaged foods with no preservatives and general health food type foodstuffs. The two gentlemen behind the counter were knowledgeable in helping me select quality steaks for the size we wanted to grill that night. This update is just for the deli counter. It's very irritating when the staff calls out to the hovering mob "who's next?", as if it's the customers' job to keep track of each other and the service flow. There is a ticket system but it's not in use. On my most recent visit, there were three staff making sandwiches while I was the only one waiting. A couple of them made eye contact with me, although they did not saying anything like we'll be right with you. Meanwhile, 3-4 other customers converged around the counter. Almost every Sunday I pick up a cooked Tri Tip . The price started at $31 and kept going up to now $49 . That's not my gripe my gripe is that they charge you $5 for slicing the piece which takes 10 seconds . I think that is a bad practice!!! Next they want us to tip the cashiers too . This past Wednesday I was feeling in over my head preparing a tri-tip for a dinner party, but Rosa and David at the deli counter were absolute lifesavers! David went above and beyond by searing the tri tip right there on the spot, which saved me so much prep time and mess. Then Rosa gave me the best instructions on exactly how to finish cooking it in the oven at home. It turned out absolutely perfect, my guests loved it! This is actually a very large grocery store that has so much stuff in it. It has regular food. It also has natural healthier food options that you would find in a health food store. They have a large section of pre-prepared food and sushi also have a large bakery with gourmet, desserts, and delicious Breakfast items you have to ask the lady behind the counter to get them for yo their produce section is really beautiful lots of fresh high-quality fruits and vegetable. I happen to be nearby and have never heard of Major Market. I walked in and there was a large coffee cafe, bakery, an impressive meat counter on exotic meats, etc... I asked the woman behind the coffee counter about the supermarket. She said it is family owned and there's another location in Fallbrook. Needed to buy a tiramisu for an event and also avocados, so I decided to go to Major Market as my favorite place for local avocados. I remember they had a bakery section, but never purchased anything before. It would be great if I can save time and get tiramisu and avocados in the same place! I saw in the bakery display glass that they had 2 slices of tiramisu for $4.99 each. It was white cake or ladyfingers on the inside from what I saw and there was cocoa powder on top. It looked good. I asked the bakery lady behind the display glass if they had a larger size than just a slice. She pointed to the bottom shelf below and they had the 6" round tiramisu cake. I asked if it was freshly baked today, she asked the other lady and then responded that it was baked yesterday. Some of the cherries on top looked dry and not freshly placed. I took a chance and purchased it. It was for an event so I was saving time from having to go elsewhere. This tiramisu was going to be eaten by several people and I was slicing it with a cake knife infront of them. After my cake knife took the first press downward, I withdrew the knife and saw red!!! coming out. I was totally confused. This cake was labeled tiramisu, was told by the lady at bakery section that its tiramisu, so why was this cake having something red come out?. I decided to slice down another area so I could remove a slice and see what was going on. That's when I noticed the inside had both vanilla white cake on top section and red color cake on bottom. I was in a state of confusion and embarrassment because it was me who purchased this cake for people to eat and everyone wondered why its red if I said it was a tiramisu. I called the store and the lady at bakery section said they make "tiramisu with a twist; with red velvet or chocolate cake". When I saw the 2 slices of tiramisu for sale, it was white cake on the inside like a tiramisu usually has. I was not told the 6" had red velvet cake. I felt deceived at this point and embarrassed infront of my guests. I still wanted to give it a chance, but it tasted more than 2 days old. The cake parts were so dry and coarse, it tasted old. On top of it all, I ended up with a stomach problem. I was too embarrassed to call my guests later this evening if they ended up with a stomach problem. Most took a bite or two and no one finished their slice. Some didnt want any. Sorry to say, but this was the worst tiramisu cake I have ever had. It was slightly tangy, that it made my taste buds so confused. My brain thinking tiramisu and my tongue trying to comprehend the taste. Its a drive for me to come here for just avocados. Would have been great if other things I buy here were good too. The employees here are friendly and have that small town wholesomeness polite mannerism which is lovely and genuine, especially the cashiers. I know the bakery section is just doing what they are told to do by upper management. I'm just really upset about this cake. I cannot recommend anyone to buy this cake thinking it is tiramisu when it is not. The bakery section employees should disclose to the customers what type of cake it is inside. Only they know its a "twist on tiramisu". Customers are unaware. The sign only says tiramisu and has the price. But selling old cake is an absolute no-no. Major market, this location needs to stop selling old cakes. If not enough customers buy it, then they perhaps should have only popular cakes so that it sells completely in a day. Instead of having a vast selection and possible cakes being old. Its better to have popular customer favorites that are fresh and sells out than it is to display variety looking like you have the largest selection only to lose customers in the end. The best local grocery in North County. I would call Major Market a foodie paradise beacuse of all the unique brands and products not generally found at corporate grocery stores. Their deli, bakery and meat departments excel with quality items. Nothing gourmet mind you, but just good stuff. Even their liquor section has some items not seen elsewhere. I've found that shopping here for gifts can be fruitful expecially for those hard-to buy-for people. While this isn't a discount store by any means it's still a viable place to visit even if you're just perusing. - The best thing about Major Market is that they sell a lot of San Diego based food and products. They also make those products easily identifiable. - They have British food and sweets. - Very casual store. You cannot ask for a better array of hot, fresh, live and gorgeous bakery you're ever seen. They make their chili rellenos in house! Oh come on. Yum! Michael is the coolest dude ever! The cashiers are so fun and very memorable. Their bakery? They actually have Julian pies! Their sushi/sashimi is top notch. Their price point is a little higher than normal but once you see the "smorgasbord " of food....you will be hooked. Oh, and they have chairs, coffee to sit at and enjoy there clean ambiance while staring at their utterly GORGEOUS deserts. My favorite has always been the fruit tarts. San Diego county may not look like it ... but it's an absolute desert of grocery store choices. There's basic two chains (Albertsons and Kroger) who disguise their duopoly under different subsidiary companies like Vons and Ralph's. And they all stock the same brands and mark it up to insane levels. When I actually want variety and difficult to find items, chances are that Major will have what I'm looking for. It's a 25 min drive from my house but absolutely worth it in terms of selection and value. They are rarely crowded. There is service when needed. They have open and functional check stands staffed by actual human beings who will help you. Beyond groceries, they have an exceptional deli and also offer hot food during the day. If I were closer, Major would be my primary store. It may not be as fancy as a high-end shop like Whole Paycheck, but It's definitely better in terms of value, selection and taste. read more

I have been shopping Major Market for over 10 year's now. Staff have always been professional and friendly! However, there's a kid working in produce Brian ( at least that's what he told me) that loves to drop F Bombs. While on the floor with customers around. I complained to a manager on duty about him maybe a month ago when I heard him swearing. She said she'd take care of it. I went today and heard him saying F this and F that! I said REALLY? You don't need to be cussing out here around customers. I went to look for management and there was too many to choose from except the head manager Dean. Clearly the first manager did nothing. So here I am! I will go back to store on Friday and talk to Dean. Hopefully he will do something about this unprofessional employee. If not there's plenty of other great stores around! read more

Every other time we go we get meat from there and come home and our fridge smells rancid like rotting flesh with chicken 3 times with fish 1 time and the straw that broke the back was the stuffed pork chops. I opened the fridge and it smelled like Jeffrey Dahmer had stored something in my fridge I came get rid of the smell its atrocious. We have always lived the place but sadly to say this will the last time they pass off the rotting meat on us I am sure we are not the only ones. We have always given the more chances. I've been coming here since the store opened. This has always been my go to. It has gone through a few ownership changes and with each one quality seems to go down. We went to the drinks corner inside the store. The drinks menu is expansive! They sell coffees, smoothies with real fruit, Italian soda, etc. I specifically came here for the Italian soda because I was curious what flavor they have and I really wanted a sweet drink. There are at least 10 different flavors to choose from! You can also get whipped cream on your Italian soda for no additional charge. Best Italian soda I have ever had! I heard good things about Major Market -- that it is better than Gelson's. Several people rave about their deli sandwiches. I agree! The sushi and deli section has better choices. Due to COVID, they have a salad bar vending machine. One can just press on the touchscreen what they want in their salad bowl and the vending machine will make it. The soup bar is non functional so there is a freezer full of their frozen soups to choose from. I like the Seafood Chowder and also the Vegetable soup. I thought the Veg Soup would be bland because it looked like some veggies in a tomato broth. I was wrong! It was so tasty, I went back the next day to buy two more servings. The bakery section is even better than Whole Foods. Because just like Frazier Farms, Major Market carried keto and gluten-free pastries (cakes and muffins). There are about five tables inside to enjoy your food. Pretty helpful because I think it can get quite hot in this part of SD. The alcohol and wine sections is extensive. Prices are more expensive than the Sprouts and Trader's next door, but I think the deli and fresh food section is the main attraction here in Major Market. read more
