Love coming here for all my Mexican food antojos aka cravings. When I want to make pozole or chicken soup (caldo de pollo) or do a Sunday Carne Asada- this is my Go-To place for all the Mexican goodies! I get my meat, queso fresco, veggies to grill or throw in a caldo or whateves! Prices are reasonable and the staff are friendly and always helpful. TONS of beer and alcohol choices and in the back they sell tacos. I've never ordered the hot food but it seems quite busy when I go so it must be good. Unsure if they sell of stuff like burritos etc - I get the uncooked stuff and take home. It can be busy on the wkds so I recommend going at night or week days. Worth it read more

Anyone claiming to know a place for carne asada meat in this town has to have 5 Star on their list. 5 Star Market is just that, a neighborhood market of a Latin variety. They have a little bit of everything including a small indoor taco grill. The store sells fresh produce, fresh dairy, canned goods, chips, beer and soda, an assortment of liquor. Naturally what they are know for is their meat counter. Friendly service great advice and good carne is what one will get here. It can be a $1 a pound more than another place in town, but generally the cuts of meat are much better. Anyway, tastes will be varied. Usually go here at least once a month. read more

Most of the time I like this place but I came here to cash a check and let me say I guess a lot of people come here to cash fake checks cause they treated me like a criminal I will never cash a check here again lol but then they again I have a Id so I took my check to the bank and had no problem but if you have no papers this is the correct place for you to cash your check and I've seen them do it with a smile and no problem . read more

This place is literally the best. The other reviews are trash. The parking lot can be a mess, but it's Escondido, what do you expect? This isn't Walmart. The produce has lots of potential, nothing is completely perfect unless you know what you're looking for. Don't buy their meat or dairy, according to some previous reviews-- and in my experience, just stick to the basics and you'll spend so little on a couple delicious meals. They have local fresh fruit around this time of year, I've come upon the most beautiful guava, pomegranate, persimmon, papaya, potatoes, citrus, and pitaya. I love this place. You can see the machinery in the back, so you know they are cutting the meat like real butchers. Their flank steak for carne asada was $7.50, but they let you pick any cut and they will season it for you. They had a cut that looked like a thin sliced boneless rib eye for $5 a pound. It was the most tender, flavourful carne asada that I have ever had. They also have a decent selection of craft beer for a really good price. I got a 22oz Dawn of the Red for $5.50. We recently moved to Escondido and with Cinco de Mayo upon us we're on the hunt for a good Mexican market. Luckily one night at our apartment grill we met a lady grilling the most delicious smelling chicken. She told us about 5 star market. So we gave it a visit today. As a San Diego girl that doesn't speak any Spanish (I know big regret) sometimes I'm a little nervous walking into a market. Not today. Everyone was so helpful and the men behind the meat counter were so friendly and helpful. Now my family is looking forward to celebrating the holiday tomorrow. Cannot wait to try the meats, cheeses, homemade guacamole, fresh tortillas, and freshly made salsa. I would highly recommend this place. read more

I feel I have the need to let you guys know about my resent experience at this store and have to say its ok market for a quick stop grab and go, but if you need to buy more than a few groceries go to a bigger market since at this store the price is a little hi. Passing to another matter today I visited the store and had the worst ever there and let me tell you what is their problem and it is that the clerks dress as if they were in a fashion show or a competition of who looks best and because of that threat customers with so little attention or courtesy and sometimes even don't even acknowledge the customer like he or she deserves. I came forward to pay and wanted cash back so I let her know but she don't even looked at me so before I ran my card I reminded her that I needed cash back and she said yes run your card and the way she directed her self to me was very disrespectful as if she was the last Coca-Cola of the desert if you know what I mean, so when I was about to ok my transaction I notice that she had not inputted my amount for cash back and told her that she didn't do what I asked her to do because she was not putting attention and she started saying of excusing her self in a very offensive way wow I said. Well this place can get a guy like me out of a hurry in a quickness. If i need cheap dog food fast, if i want some made tacos, if i need an emergency beer, and so much more. However i dont come here by choice but because it is im walking distance of my place. The vegetables are old (i tried looking for a good avocado but they were all trash). I just left that place because we needed sour cream and to my disbelief every single sour cream in stock was expired! What!? The tacos are pretty good tho. Dog or cat meat i dont care, its all about the seasoning. The neighborhood is terrible though. I should know, i live around here. So you will have the occasional neighborhood wino ask for a dollar. This place is the best for meat. They have amazing Carne Asada in multiple types of flat meat. They speak both english and spanish, so people need not be intimidated by the mostly hispanic patron traffic. I have shopped here for 5 years, lived in escondido for 43. This place is awesome! read more

I'm surprised this place has no reviews! I was told by a friend to try their tacos so I did just that tonight. Let me tell you, I fell completely in love with this place. This market has the best tacos ever! They have so many kinds to choose from too like buche, cabeza, carne asada, chicken, birria mmmmmm! Best of all, they are super cheap too! This is the best store to get any Mexican food you want. Whether you are getting meat to cook yourself or eating tacos from the store, either way it's a good choice. There meat is always fresh and the way they marinate it is amazing. The prices for everything in the store from food to drinks are very cheap as well. First and foremost if i could i would rate this place with 0 stars. The only reason why i went here was because the meat selection and quality is fairly good, other than that the coustomer service sucks here. The two females that work at the register in the front have no interest in providing good customer service, being courteous and act stuck up. Not to forget but there are flies all over the front entrance and the "fresh" produce. In conclusion the not even the meat saves this place one bit with poor health standards and crappy cuatomer service. My advice, go somewhere else. read more
