Unfortunately Sanders Painting was a miserable experience for us. We were beginning the process of…read moreselling our home and hiring a painter was one of the last bits of work that needed to be done to the exterior. We got a few estimates, Sanders was the best combo of price and what was included in the bid. Jim Sanders seemed like he would be good to work with. However, he was late to start the job and it was clear he was doing another job along with ours. I don't have an issue with that, he just was already jeopardizing our timeline. He would try to make up for the late start by working well into the night with spotlights. This is normally fine if there is some last thrust to meet a deadline, but this became a chronic activity. A no-show during the normal day and then pop in around evening and work at night. He would depart at night with the yard a mess and his equipment and tarps strewn about. He used dark plastic instead of canvas tarps, and while he worked elsewhere during the daylight hours, that dark plastic was causing all kinds of hell on my grass and shrubs. Several hostas, by the end of the job were stressed beyond repair or outright dead. Grass was burned randomly throughout the yard. Bottom line is that a job that was supposed to last a few weeks at the absolute extreme went 6 weeks! The whole time he had what appeared to be carnival people working for him, very few lasted more than a few days. I kept telling him that I needed to get my house on the market and he kept insisting he was almost done. His timeline was often stretched due to inadequate job planning. Running out of materials or forgetting to order something and then having to wait. The waiting generally meant he would not show up to do any work until whatever was ordered came in. In the case of replacement siding, it cost us a week. It cost him nothing. His major mistake is that he power washed my house first, which is normally fine, but my house had cedar siding, which can be just too soft for any sort of aggressive power washing. He so badly scarred up the siding that he compounded the amount of pre-painting prep work he needed to do. So much bondo and putty. So much sanding and grinding. Sometimes you just don't get to power wash, you have to just scrape and sand. It was horrible to watch. Weeks went by and it was difficult to even see any sort of progress. In the end we had to ask him to get done or leave the property. We ultimately settled with him to just be done and walk away. He tried to increase his bill to compensate for added labor that he claims was because we were leaning on him so hard to finish up. By that time it had been 5 weeks! Leaning on him? It was starting to seem like he was moving in. Often times he was drying his actual freaking laundry in our backyard. Seriously... laundry... right down to the tightie whities. So unprofessional. There was quite a bit of belligerence by the end, us fighting back and forth trying to get some sort of exit plan. We told him that he was costing us way more than we could recoup. The sale of our house was delayed by a month, in the meantime, I had already bought another house so I was paying both mortgages. Because he was costing me money I began to indicate that I was going to start docking money from the final invoice. His defense was the most asinine conversation I have ever had where he took almost no responsibility for anything. I finally had enough, and kicked him off the site six weeks from the start of the job and told him to just file his lien and sue me. I could not get anywhere with him and it was clear that we would ultimately ending up physically fighting each other. Jim gave up and accepted a lower amount, which technically wasn't really too far off from original contract and he left the site. It was another week before he came and got his equipment loaded. Another... damn... week. In the end, he was asked to leave before he completed his shoddy work. I had to remove shutters and put them on the proper windows (it was unbelievably idiotic the matches he made with shutters to windows). He didn't put the mailbox or house letters back where they were originally. He did move them, but left all the previous screw holes unfilled and unpainted. There was overspray on 4 or 5 screens that I had to replace (including the big slider in the back). He painted over the motion sensor in both of my house lights. Yep. And the kicker... he used semi-gloss paint. On a home exterior. He will claim that it's on me, I selected the paint. Well, I did select the color, but beyond that, I'm not a painter, I wouldn't know that you don't use a semi-gloss paint on an exterior. So every flaw (and they are legion) is pretty obvious. It's a total waste. A bad job. I hate it. And.. his dog shit in my yard. Everywhere. There is so much more detail that is left out. Do not hire.

We called him when we moved back to Iowa and closed on our house and a window collapsed in 24 hours of closing. He came and sold us windows and they were in the house in 5 weeks. This time we did a full set of windows and not just 4 like the last time. The installers where great and made sure my little One could get a little nap in while they moved around the house.
