We went whale watching recently with Kevin and Gina at 9 in the morning- it was absolutely amazing! We saw tons of whales, even one that jumped all the way out the water. It was incredible. You won't be bored and will see much more than just whale spouts. There were full breaches, whale tails, and lots of fins slapping against the water. Also the view is so beautiful! Kevin and Gina were both so knowledgeable and knew where to go to see the most whales. They were also super nice and funny without being corny and tacky :) They offered us water, ginger tablets in case you get seasick, and reef safe sunscreen, which was really nice. The boat ride was comfortable and not scary- no big jumps, splashes, or moments where the boat went super fast. It was really enjoyable to feel the wind against your face. The boat was a great size- not too big where it was hard to see the whales and not to small where it felt unsafe. It had a sturdy railing and was well protected from the water so we never got wet. Makai Adventures is a great company. Our family did the Lanai snorkeling trip yesterday and we had an amazing time! Kevin and Gina were awesome, knowledgeable, safety minded and professional. We felt safe and in good hands! Their combined knowledge of Maui and overall Hawaiian history was so interesting. Their ability to pick the great snorkel spots and find beauty in nature for us all to enjoy were great! We went on the whale watching tour on March 21st. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Sergio and Gina were in charge and both of them were terrific. The best part is that the boat was big enough to feel safe but small enough to be fast in the water so that we could easily maneuver here and there to see whales and did we ever see a lot of whales. We only had 20 people on board so no one missed a shot since we could easily move around the boat to look. We told everyone how wonderful they were. Kevin is a great captain and Gina an excellent host. This is a fantastic boat, as it allows you to get much closer to the whales than the larger cruises. Our experience was so great that we went twice in one week and each trip was phenomenal. We saw over 6 whales each time plus a sea turtle, dolphins and fish. We were fortunate enough to have three whales swim just under the boat, with the calf spy-hopping several times! I believe this is the only small-sized boat that has a restroom, which is a nice option for kids, though no one used it on either excursion. You can't go wrong with this team. read more

Makai adventures was a wonderful whale watching trip that we would highly recommend. It is a "small boat" experience which was exactly what we were looking for (we have done the big boat tours and just don't care for the crowds). The boat was very stable and was able to move quickly to whales seen by our expert guides Sergio and Lilly. Our guides gave us so much education on humpback whales. They were very attentive to all guests on the boat. They were also very helpful with our 2 year old grand daughter who had a blast on the trip. We got to "hang out" with several whales...even got to watch a baby whale breach over and over. Would highly recommend Makai Adventures. read more

What a great experience whale watching! We were with about 15 people on a boat that was big enough to feel safe and small enough so we could see the whales easily and be comfortable. I felt bad for the crowds of people standing on huge boats. Our guides were knowledgeable and friendly. Awesome trip! It started off with a whale breaching in front of the boat and ended with a Mom and a calf, the Mom swam under the boat. The trip is exactly what we were looking for, small enough so that it is very personal and to see what is going on from any angle. Super nice guys running the trip, and just a perfect trip! The staff was pleasant, glad to see they are back to work. Our whale watch was just ok, not our first. We spotted 2-3 whales as they were going down, we than sat for 20 minutes or more waiting for them to resurface. Not pleasant in direct sun, no breeze, face masks. It would be better to move slow and have air movement. Thought maybe saving gas since only taking a half group for social distancing. We were going to go again since we have 2 more weeks here. But scratched that idea, maybe kayaks instead. read more

We really enjoyed that this was a smaller boat than offered on many other tours. The service and experience were very personal. Highly recommend! Boat captain Sergio made sure we saw lots and lots of whales. And the First Mate (Megan? Blanking on her name now) was very friendly and shared lots of info about the whales. I was concerned that going near the end of whale season (mid March) meant that we would not see many whales. In fact, near the end of season means you will see lots of activity as whales know they are leaving soon. read more

Recently went to Maui and it is whale season so we just had to go! I was pleased to see they had tickets available last min. We saw lots of whales on the trip and the 2 staff members were educated on the whales. The only thing I would change is that originally the staff was a bit stand off-ish when we first arrived but they quickly warmed up! I would go out with them again. read more

I chose this group because of their five star rating and boy they were all on point. The crew was friendly, and were happy to answer questions about the whales. We saw 3 different with babies and a big pod of about twenty dolphins. We didn't realize how much better our boat was until we saw others alongside with overcrowded boats. If you would like a more intimate group setting on your whale watching tour, Makai Adventures is the way to go. They have a max of about 24 people per trip I believe, and this means everyone gets a front row seat to the show! A smaller boat goes faster and gets you closer to the whales! The crew was personable and knowledgable and with the small group, very accessible for everyones questions. They offered fresh water, and multiple sea sickness remedies (ginger chews, soda, etc.) available for guests if needed. We cruised out into the channel and got some stunning views of the Maui coastline. We didn't see any action right away, but the guys knew what they were doing. Soon enough we were side by side with a group of active whales. The crew was respectful and stayed a safe distance away, while still getting us close enough to catch the action. Overall it was an amazing tour. The only thing missing was a mai tai or two ;) read more

I forgot my memory card for my GoPro and was super bummed out, so the captain took his memory card out of his GoPro and let me borrow it as long as I promised to come back and return it. 7:30am 3/27/2017 - epic and awesome trip! We picked this boat originally because it was one of the only boats that would allow me to take my 5-month-old along. There are no guarantees to see whales, especially this late in the season. But we were hopeful. Captain Jonathan clearly knew how to drive a boat well and both he and Skipper Kevin spotted a whale mom, her calf, and escort. We followed them and soon bottle nose dolphins joined, then "whale drama"- another couple of whales showed up. Other whale-watching tours came to join our whale because it was the most interesting one in the area. The whole time Captain was scanning the area to make sure we were watching the best possible one. So cool! Kevin made sure we were all well-taken care of with water, etc. The shade on the boat was IDEAL for baby and I. So was the timing. And I loved all of the whale facts Kevin shared. Epic ending to the trip - Captain spotted another whale grouping and the calf was jumping out of the water. It was so cool that they stayed a bit later in the water than we were scheduled to be. I did not really want to give a review, however they ask 3 times on the boat and sent an email asking me to. So maybe this will help them grow as a company. First of all the boat was very nice and spacious. We may have been spoiled from the previous whale watching trips we took the day before. The captain spoke very softly and not everyone could hear him. We followed another boat the whole trip and never educated anyone on the whales or talked to us about what we were seeing. We both felt that we wasted our money on this trip and the only reason we saw whales was because the other boat led us there. Maybe next season they will be better prepared to take people out. Very nice morning whale watching. The boat is super comfortable. We have been on the rafts before and they can be harsh! This is a small boat so nice small group but big boat comfort. Staff was great and answered questions about whales for the kids as well as told some funny whale jokes. We saw several whales some super close. We have worked with several companies and they were fine but these guys were great from ease of reservation to comfort of boat and overall experience. Thank you so much!! I just went whale watching with Sergio and Amanda. We had the most incredible time. Sergio charged out and was able to detect whales with the most surface action. Amanda informed us about the whales and answered our questions. We saw spouts, backs, pectoral slaps, flukes, repeated tail slapping and baby breeches. Then we went off on our own and Sergio turned off the motor so we could listen to the ghostly whale sounds below. It was amazing. I highly recommend this tour because the small power boat can move quickly and directly to position you near the whale activity. I will make this tour a yearly tradition with my family.
