We were lucky tohave a gorgeous day and were rewarded with lots of whale sightings...saw about 6 breaches and several were by a young calf! Then we came across a whale with her back fin sticking out of the water and come to find out she was nursing her calf! Sighting of life time maybe? We liked being able to get quickly from one area to another and have some maneuverability of our position even in a smaller boat...from what we saw of the large boats you are pretty much stuck in the position you are on in the boat even though it does turn to give everyone a sighting though you may still miss alot as things happen rapidly. This is not an issue with a smaller boat like this group uses! read more

My sister and I had an amazing time on this whale watching trip. Keao and Kevin were great; very knowledgable and friendly. I love that the boat only takes 20 passengers; we saw other (bigger) boats that were crammed with people and then some scary-looking little rafts, but our boat was perfect. Big enough to be safe and comfortable, but small enough to maneuver safely around the whales and get personal attention from our hosts. And the whales--wow. We had barely cleared the harbor before we started seeing mama and calf pairs. Several times we were so close that Keao had to turn off the boat. Then we would just sit in silence and awe at these huge, beautiful creatures. We ended up halfway between Maui and Lanai near the end of our trip, where we saw whales breaching up out of the water. This trip was the highlight of our visit to Maui. It was 2 hours of perfection and we will definitely book future visits with Makai. read more

Highly recommend. Kevin and Justen are a fantastic duo. We were a large group and they took us on a five hour adventure of whale watching, snorkeling, and fishing. They accommodated our group, even though we all had very different skill sets. And they seriously know more about whales than I thought possible. Pro tip - if you are a larger group, spend the extra and get a private charter boat. It makes it easier to craft your own itinerary and gives you more room on the boat. I have taken many snorkeling trips in Maui this by far was the best I've been on! Great to get away from the crowds with this snorkel trip. The crew was very knowledgeable and friendly. They have great snorkel sites. They took the time to help my 9 year old daughter snorkel for the first time. She wouldn't even go with Dad that's how comfortable Taryn made her feel. The boat is a powerboat so you get to your spots much quicker than sailing very stable and spacious. The food they provided was awesome and fresh. This was my first snorkeling trip. Sergio and Kevin were very professional and helpful. Their boat ride to lanai is amazing. They take you to good spots for snorkeling. These spots are less invaded by the big companies so it pretty much is just the people on their boat at these spots which makes it very relaxing and fun. Since it doesn't get too crowded you get to see a bunch of fish and we even spotted a sea turtle. read more

Went out with Kevin & Gina for an early bird whale watching tour. I'm glad we chose Makai over the other companies because it was a much more personal small tour. Over 2 hours we saw a lot of whales and we were lucky to see a ton of breeching including some tail and pectoral fin slapping very close to the boat. They were attentive to the waves and made sure we didn't get into too rough of water while still providing a great tour. The knowledge these two have of the whales around Hawaii was awesome, and they were happy to share it and answer any question we had. Towards the end of the tour they took us into some calm water and dropped down an aquaphone, we heard some male humpbacks singing. Loved this trip, the boat was solid (not a raft) but not huge or crowded. The captain, Kevin, did an outstanding job finding the whales, Moms and calves, some males doing pec slaps and showing off their tails. The naturalist onboard, Amanda, did a wonderful job answering questions even the ones that had had already been asked. I would absolutely recommend this tour! read more

So this review has been a long time coming, I am the worst at remembering to write these things. Although this trip has not left my memory, and was one of the best trips to Lanai'i I have experienced in the four years I have lived on Maui. I loved the small group setting; it makes it feel like you're on a private charter without breaking your wallet! There is also shade available, which a lot of the smaller boats and rafts do not provide...which is crucial! Kevin was amazing, and made sure every single person had the best possible experience on this trip. We saw dolphins along the way to Manele Bay, and stopped at more spots along the coast of Lanai'i than any other snorkel trip i have ever been on. We swam through huge schools of fish, and hung out with the sea turtles! Needless to say i was absolutely impressed with the way Makai Adventures operates, and their crew. I would recommend this trip to anyone, and look forward to coming out again soon! read more

Family of five, we all had an excellent time! Kevin and Gina make an awesome captain and crew team, attentive, welcoming, knowledgeable and fun. It really felt like we had Lanai all to ourselves. Took us to see the back cliffs, which are beautiful. Crystal clear water everywhere, but especially the last stop - surreal. Saw spinner dolphins, sea turtles, caves, cliffs, sea arches, underwater coral tunnels, shells and of course lots and lots of various fish and coral. They served a fruit snack which I wasn't expecting, and the lunch was amazingly, ridiculously good. I can't emphasize how nice and relaxing it was to just have a small group and get these spots all to ourselves, and what competent and caring guides Kevin and Gina were. This is an awesome company that really values the ocean and the islands and genuinely enjoys sharing it with others. One of our group wasn't a swimmer and they took extra care of her, so don't let not being a swimmer stop you from this tour, they will make sure you feel safe, comfortable and enjoy the sights! read more

Kevin was very genuine, caring and funny. We watched him help a lady who was having some sea-sickness by giving her a cold wet towel, ginger candy and always making sure she was okay. This was the BEST! Loved every minute! The MAKAI whale guides @ Lahaina explained whale habits & their migration and found numerous whales that were quite near to the boat. The guides were in no hurray and expertly navigated as close as law allows. They patiently answered any questions we had. We went whale watching for the first time in Maui, and after much consideration (and reading reviews), we chose to go with Makai Adventures instead of one of the other companies that offer larger boats. We are so glad we did! The vessel was comfortable, smooth, and small enough to be able to see whales on all sides and hear everything the tour guides had to say. We learned a lot about whales that day and laughed a lot too. It was peak season so there was no shortage of whales to see.
