Went to have lunch at Down the Hatch and decided to check out the whale watching booths across the way. By happenstance the places we wanted to go on were booked so they referred us to Makai adventures! So glad they did! It's a real speed type boat that holds probably 20 persons max, which I felt was a better experience than the raft type boats we saw (too small and crowded) and the large two story cruiser boats since we were able to super close to the whales - We could almost touch them! Shout out to Lainey and Kevin who were genuinely passionate about the whales and were so knowledgeable. Tips- don't eat beforehand (bad idea) and take Dramamine from local ABC store if you tend to get seasick. Also park at local beach (5 min walk)- free parking for 3 hours. read more

Absolutely surpassed everything we have hoped for! We did the 4 PM whale watching cruise with our 3 year old, and loved every minute. Both Kevin and Gina were knowledgeable and fun - and had fantastic intuition about where the whales would be. They spotted one a way off, and then it ended up swimming under our boat and floating for 10 minutes! We did whale watching once years ago (on a large boat) and didn't see a single whale. My husband and I joined Makai for an excursion today and it completely blew us away! Not only did we see a ton of beautiful whales, we saw a days old calf AND were surrounded by dolphins! My family and I were on vacation in Maui (in the Lahaina area) and we went on a whale watching tour with Makai Adventures. The boat was not one of the larger boats but there was enough room for the proper social distancing. They did temperature checks and masks were required. Sergio and Jenna were our hosts and they were very friendly and knowledgeable. They did a great job getting us close to view the whales. We saw a number of whales and the whole family had a great time. Because of the size of the boat there was a great view no matter where you sat. I would definitely recommend them and would do it again when we go back. read more

Great fishing trip!! I booked their "Light tackle" bottom fishing. Captain Kevin, deck hand Julia, made everyone feel welcome, put us on fish with the first baits in the water! They were very knowledgeable of where to get fish. Everyone took some home! They also had recipe and cooking advice for the types of fish we caught. WOW! Up close and personal experience of a lifetime! We decided on the 4-6 pm cruise with Makai Adventures so we could hike Haleakala and so happy we did. The water was smooth and the whales were plentiful. Our captain, Sergio, and his first mate, Lainie, spotted a playful trio of adult whales that put on a spectacular show for the majority of the tour. We also had the opportunity to drop the mic into the water and listen to male whales in the area--amazing! The late afternoon afforded us the opportunity to catch the perfect sunset. LOVED the intimate group experience as opposed to the double-decker boats we saw out on the water. Very comfortable seating. And, of course, Sergio and Lainie were extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. DEFINITELY recommend Makai Adventures and look forward to returning some day. read more

We have been using the whale watching services of Makai for at least 8 years. We tried the huge boats and the rubber raft type whale watching experiences but found that MAKAI offered the best experience. This year, Paul, Lainy, Allison, Levi and Shannon have provided another successful season for us. We took our 13 family members for 2 whale watches this year. We were so glad to learn that they were going to be available this year!!!! They have adapted their process to accomodate for the loss of the Lahaina Harbor access. We went to the 6:45 tour, WE LOVED IT! Check in was very easy, and slip was easy to find. Be prepared to take your shoes and socks off when getting on the boat, we weren't aware of that. Had just an exceptional whale watching experience with Makai. Originally just had one trip booked on Feb 26th but loved it so much we added another trip the following day. The boat is clean, comfortable and as noted every seat gives you a front row view. Having only 20 or so quests makes it more intimate and the boat is very stable and comfortable to be on. We saw at least 15-20 whales the first day and followed 3-4 different groups of cows/calves and their escorts. Could always see more whales in the distance. On the 2nd day we encountered a female that must have been ready for mating, and we ended up with at least 7-8 males (maybe more) following her. We stayed with that group for at least 25-30 minutes and watched the males pushing and jockeying for position. On at least two occasions we had whales come right under the boat. It was so amazing to see so many whales so close and we also ecountered several other whales that day. The staff and crew (Noah, Allison 1st day) and Tiffany and the female boat captain (sorry forgot her name) 2nd day were all very friendly, knowledgeable and did their best to assure a great experience for everyone. Just an awesome experience from a great company. Would highly recommend Makai.. 5 stars is not enough!!! read more
