If I could give them 10 stars I would... My husband and I came out to Maui to have a late honeymoon and we love out door adventures. We found Maui kayak through a search and Maui Kayak Adv. had great reviews and it seemed to be on the side of the island we were on. Bonus... they are a B Corp. (look that up if you don't know) A company who gives back is super important and they are a small business, extra bonus. We had reservations for one day but the swells were a little "extra" so they called us to reschedule for another day. We had a little wiggle room and I appreciate that they cared about safety and even visibility in the water. Communication was super easy either via call or text and I was always updated on location of meet up. We were super lucky to have Heather as our guide. She was super nice and had great vibes and was super knowledgeable about the ocean life and geography around us. She took us to great spots and we saw tons of turtles amongst all of the other tropical fishes both shy and "brave" She even took amazing pictures for us of creatures up close by free diving and we got to download them later. Out of our on of our water snorkel adventures on our trip this was our fave: Heather was just all around rad. We had an amazing time on our kayaking/snorkeling tour with Andrew. He was super knowledgeable and skilled with helping everyone into their kayaks. Some people in our group were concerned about being able to get back into the kayak after snorkeling. I'm here to tell you that your fears are unfounded. It does not matter how out of shape you are, the guides WILL get you back into the kayak. You'll be fine, and you'll have a great time. We saw lots a fish and two sea turtles while snorkeling. Andrew found two excellent snorkeling spots for us to stop at. The trip was not very physically demanding, and I think it lasted just the right amount of time. Andrew took lots of photos that he then shared with the group, as well as restaurant recommendations based on where everyone was staying. read more

This was an awesome day! We had John as our guide and I was very impressed with John. It was evident he has taken the time to educated himself about the Hawaiian culture along with the islands history, and he was dropping g knowledge throughout our trip; personally I appreciated and enjoyed it. We went out on a day when the swells were a little high so a lot of people canceled, so there were only four of us who went out in double kayaks. You Kayak out to the snorkel location and then hop out of the kayak into the water. If you have never done this before, these are all great learning opportunities. I am so glad we choose this company for our first whale watch and snorkeling tour. The weather was perfect for kayaking no waves and water temperatures was pretty warm. Also a lot whales happen to appear that day. Our instructor, Kurtis, was outstanding. He followed COVID guidelines while still making this experience personal and rememberable. I cannot recommend this tour enough. This was my husband and I's first time snorkeling and it was a wonderful first experience at Makena. Our guide Rachel, was very informative and taught us a lot about the marine life, surrounding islands, and the Hawaiian culture and language. She was very helpful in walking us through each step of the process. They also take lots of pictures for you to have free access to which is amazing! To my surprise I began hyperventilating when attempting to breath underwater but she helped coach me through. So if this is your first time and this happens to you- just stay calm, keep trying and you'll be a pro in no time. Absolutely worth every second. Being able to kayak to the snorkeling spot just adds to the fun and adventure. Also worth noting we were placed in one kayak for two. I also love how they take time to give back to the island and the people and encourage others to do the same. High recommend! read more

My husband and I went Sea Kayaking with our guide Matt today and it was absolutely amazing!! We booked a group tour, but it turned out we were the only ones who signed up so we had a private tour with Matt! (Lucky!) We started at Makena landing at 7 am, and then Matt helped us transition easily to the water through the breaking waves. He catered the whole thing to what we wanted to see, so we kayaked north and followed the spouts of Humpback Whales to get closer and closer. After a while, we had two whales surface right near us (and then it happened again)! So amazing! He was very knowledgeable about the whales and was excellent at locating the best areas. Plus, we had a beautiful rainbow in the background and Matt was using his waterproof camera to take photos of everything. Next we kayaked over nearer to the shore and a coral area, known as turtle town. Matt anchored the kayaks and we put on snorkeling gear (provided). We went snorkeling all around there and there were many sea turtles swimming around and coming up for air. Matt was excellent at pointing us toward cool new fish and telling us about them! Again, so knowledgeable. We wouldn't have known where to go or what we were really seeing otherwise. We would highly recommend Maui Kayak Adventures. It was worth the price and was definitely the highlight of our trip. Matt shared all the photos he took with us and they look like professional photos! 5 stars! read more

My wife and I had a very enjoyable time with Maui Kayak Adventures. When we arrived, John (our guide) explained that the sea was a bit unpredictable that day and we could opt to not go if we wanted. We went ahead and decided to go, however, as the potential for seeing a lot of stuff was great. Getting out to sea was a LITTLE dicey, but John coached us well on how to get over the swells without incident. Once out to sea, we took a nice tour of the coastline, before stopping to snorkel. We saw multiple turtles, which John captured with his camera and emailed to us promptly on our return to shore. Getting back IN to shore was REALLY scary. The surf had kicked up quite a bit, and we saw several boats get tossed upside down by a wave. Unfortunately, while we were witnessing this, our boat got dumped over (twice) and we lost all our snorkel gear (argh). More on this in a bit. John did a fantastic job of SWIMMING out to a point where he could communicate with us and guide us to an alternate cove that had slightly calmer waves. He coached us perfectly to safety. It was pretty scary, but we made it with his help. After we got back in and he called the snorkel rental place to plead our case that our gear was not lost out of negligence, rather act of God, hoping to get us a deal on what we'd have to pay to replace the lost gear. Very kind of him. Overall, we look forward to another trip with this outfit next time we're in Maui. They're the real thing. read more

Unfortunately all whales returned back to Alaska, but we did a very fun and quite interesting snorkeling: Elise knows all the places where you can spot a sea turtle or enjoy the views of coral reef. This is an excellent kayak and snorkeling tour company. Guides are extremely knowledgeable naturalists who taught us a lot about Maui and it's wildlife. It seemed like our guide knew the answers to even the most obscure questions. They are adamant conservationists who inspire their guests to be as environmentally conscious as they are. I have booked with this company twice now and each time we had an experience of a lifetime. Most recently, I booked for a group of 36 people!! Apart of coordinating on my end who wanted to go, MKA made it so easy for me to book, reschedule (and reschedule/cancel), and plan for my group. They were always attentive to my needs (and I had a lot of questions). All their staff was really friendly, nice, and understanding of the complications that came with such a big group. On the day of our tour, everything went smoothly. They had the majority of our group sign waivers ahead of time. They did a thorough, but quick briefing. All 36 of us were on the water in no time. All their equipment seemed well taken care of and enough for what we needed. To top it off, we got some awesome pictures/video and even drone footage! They had an edited drone video of our group up on their Facebook before we even finished our tour. And while they can't control the whales themselves, we ended up having an EPIC DAY! We saw so many whales with their babies that we didn't even know which way to look, because they were all around us. All in all...company is great, tour guides were even better. Booked a group tour for 2 of us online about 4 months in advance. If you put "Makena Landing Bay" into your GPS, this will bring you to the parking lot. You park here and walk a short distance to where your guide/equipment is. It looks like on their website a group tour has a max of 8 people at a time, and we had 7 in our group not including our guide. The first part was learning about the Hawaiian language/species of fish on the shore and then we set off. They provided snorkels/fins/kayaks, so all you really have to bring is your own sunscreen (they recommend reef safe kind) and sunglasses. Note that anything you bring on the kayak will get wet. I don't know why I didn't think of this beforehand, but I get motion sickness and while we were moving in the kayak it was fine, but we rested for about 15 minutes looking for any breaching whales (beginning of whale season) and that made me feel very nauseous. Nico, our guide, was as accommodating as he could be, but if you get seasick at all be sure to buy/take some Dramamine beforehand. Totally my fault but just something that soured my experience a bit. Nico dove down and took some cool up close pictures of the turtle/ray/fish we saw, and was able to get a few shots of us in the background. He e-mailed us pictures that same day, however I do recommend bringing a go pro if you're looking to get video or a ton of pictures of yourself. I had a great experience here and would totally recommend it to any tourists visiting! Make sure to bring cash to tip your awesome guide :) read more

It was a fantastic experience and we saw lots of whales, including several that were within the "no paddle" distance. We've done whale watching from a boat before and this was so much better. We LOVED this tour so much!!! Our guide, Emily was phenomenal! She is extremely knowledgeable about kayaking, snorkeling, the fish and corals, the island, ecology, and respecting Hawaii and its rules and regulations. Emily is excellent at explaining how to exit and re-enter your kayak and correct body position and paddling technique. Also great at helping fit your mask and snorkel. And if something didn't work one way, she had great ideas to make it work differently. We learned so much from Emily today!!! And... the places she took us to for snorkeling were pristine and magnificent! We got to see the "turtle cleaning station", giant coral, beautiful fish. We toured with a lovely family. Emily is great at explaining kayaking and snorkeling to the children. I have a knee replacement and a fused spine. I was concerned that I would have trouble getting back on the kayak. We went out this morning with John S. for kayaking and snorkeling. I would say it was our best snorkeling experience in Hawaii yet!! John is friendly and knowledgeable about the area, history and marine life. I was nervous about not being able to pull myself out of the ocean up into the kayak. He was very supportive and was right there when it was time for me to get back on. He talked me through it and I got right on the boat and into my seat. He keeps his eye on everyone in the water and keeps making sure that everyone is ok. He even offers pictures that he takes of you (and my husband) in and out of the water. We saw a ton of sea turtles and some squid. He dives down to find things for you to look at and he got amazing sea life pictures with his great camera. You then just pay $60 for the pictures. Haven't seen the pics yet but from what I saw of them when he took them, they should be awesome!! We would do this same dive with him again. Our tour guide molly was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, which is key for being a tour guide. After being briefed on the ins and outs of ocean kayaking, and given a minute of pause with the possibility of flipping over, I managed to jerry rig a laceholder for my eye glasses as I had no intention of losing them in the drink. Off we went without a hitch, save for one in our group that got slammed initially by a wave on his way out of the bay. Watching the whales via kayak was much more immersive an experience than just taking a boat tour. Watching the whales spy hopping was amazing. It got even better when a group of three decided to breach about 20 feet from our kayaks. As we finally ran out of time and turned back to kayak into sure, decided to take a dip in the water before having to head back into shore. Upon landing we took a final picture, said goodbye. it was a phenomenal experience and I would highly recommend going through maui kayak adventures t if you have the chance. read more

All I can say is this should cost a lot more... We went kayaking and snorkeling for about 3 hours with Peter as our guide and and he's so knowledgeable and respectful of the ocean and the wildlife. My friend and I went on a an early morning adventure in Makena with Jay S. as our guide. It was fantastic. We were lucky in that there were no other participants in the group tour, just us. So that was cool. I found MKA to be very efficient from booking through to the end of the trip. Jay was a very knowledgeable and helpful kayak guide. We went snorkeling in two different spots and he always made sure were were safe and got back on the kayaks with ease. I would recommend this tour to anyone. We are very disappointed with the customer service at Maui Kayak Adventures. We booked a private kayak trip for two people at the end of September 2018. We have a trip to Maui scheduled in March 2019. We received a phone call less than two weeks before our scheduled trip. They had a large corporate group schedule for the same date we chose. They said there would be eighty other people on the trip. The representative we spoke with said we could reschedule for a different day. He also said, he wasn't obligated to notify us about the large group on the same day we had our private trip scheduled. We hit the jackpot on our group snorkel tour! We had two guides (one was in training for whale season) and they were amazing. Cory and Kia'i were full of Hawaiian history, sea life, and knew the best places to stop away from the crowds. The early morning hours are worth it because you beat the 100's of people coming on large boats. The kids (17,16,12) loved their experience. Hadn't snorkeled before and got the hang of it right away. Kayaking on the open ocean was a treat in of itself! PLUS they took a ton of photographs that were emailed to us within hours of the completion of our tour.
