Booked the sunset whale watching tour and it did not disappoint. Within the first 30 minutes had found a pod of 3-4 very active humpback whales that showed off for us for at least an hour. Once they even came close enough that we could smell their stinky exhalation. Knowledgeable staff and smaller boat which allowed us to feel closer to the whales. read more

This is the best for whale watching. They can up super close and personal with the whales, they are incredibly knowledgeable, and it is a small group tour. We had an unbelievable experience, whales going under the boat, saw 100 total maybe more, saw 40 full breaches.... It was INCREDIBLE. We did some snorkel and sail trips that showed whales along the way but this one is great to move fast and go to where the whales are. read more

If you're looking for a great snorkel trip, look no further. Makai Adventures is incredible! My wife and I used them for a snorkel trip and it was was great from start to finish. Captain Sergio and first mate Jen made everyone feel safe and are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the various ocean animals in the area. Jen was able to point out sea turtles to snorkel by, Captain Sergio was able to tell some Hawaiian history around the Island of Lanai. Makai Adventures offered delicious banana bread and fresh fruit after the first snorkel dive. For lunch I had what possibly the best poke bowl I've ever eaten, it was delicious! Overall, it was a fantastic trip and worth every penny. We will be using them when we return to the island. I highly recommend! read more

We had a great time on this smaller whale watching tour. Our guides, Jenny and Kevin were knowledgeable and funny. Their safety talk beforehand reassured our nervous 7 year old daughter that everything was going to be a-okay. On top of that, they did a great job of getting us out there to see some spectacular whales - calves, moms, males chasing said moms and calves, and all of this while respecting and giving the whales plenty of space. At some point, we had our engine off, and even saw one of the whales swim under our boat! We were so glad we took this tour - we saw some of those other tours, packed to the gills - every seat taken with people even squashed in the front with no comfy seats. Every person had space on our boat with room to spare and it was only 4 groups of families. Highly recommend Makai Adventures. We will definitely be trying a snorkel tour with them next time! read more

Had just an exceptional whale watching experience with Makai. Originally just had one trip booked on Feb 26th but loved it so much we added another trip the following day. The boat is clean, comfortable and as noted every seat gives you a front row view. Having only 20 or so quests makes it more intimate and the boat is very stable and comfortable to be on. We saw at least 15-20 whales the first day and followed 3-4 different groups of cows/calves and their escorts. Could always see more whales in the distance. On the 2nd day we encountered a female that must have been ready for mating, and we ended up with at least 7-8 males (maybe more) following her. We stayed with that group for at least 25-30 minutes and watched the males pushing and jockeying for position. On at least two occasions we had whales come right under the boat. It was so amazing to see so many whales so close and we also ecountered several other whales that day. The staff and crew (Noah, Allison 1st day) and Tiffany and the female boat captain (sorry forgot her name) 2nd day were all very friendly, knowledgeable and did their best to assure a great experience for everyone. Just an awesome experience from a great company. Would highly recommend Makai.. 5 stars is not enough!!! read more

My husband and I took a group of 6 college students on a whale-watching trip with Makai Adventures and it was great! The students were thrilled, and it was a very professional operation. We saw a lot of whales! As a zoologist, I was especially pleased with the care taken by Captain Sergio and Firstmate Lainie took to ensure the safety of the whales, being careful to not get too close or stay too long with any one group of whales. Was unsure about it at first since the place I booked it on didn't show any pictures of the boat, however it was a great, medium sized normal boat, not a windy day so it was a decently smooth ride. It's peak whale season (feb) and boy was it amazing! Seeing them from shore is one thing but seeing them up close is just amazing. Def bring a water, make sure to put on PLENTY of sunscreen, maybe some bug spray, and maybe a light jacket if weather predicts rain or cold conditions. They do have part of the boat covered so some shade which is great. You won't get wet if the water conditions are calm that day. We saw spinner dolphins, TONS of humpback whales, mostly adult females with babies in tow. (Adorable) the guides (laney) (sorry if I misspelled your name) and captain (Paul) were very knowledgeable and very friendly and outgoing. We saw whales jump out of the water (just incredible). Def highly recommend, also one of the cheaper whale watching places, which is perfect for someone on a budget but also just as good as the rest! Thank you! read more

We went out today with Kevin and Sergio and had a fantastic early morning whale watch! First, the boat is more stable than the rest and fast too. In no time, we were on the other side of the channel where the whales were hanging out. While your experience may be different, ours was that we were met by a whale breaching not far from us. The guys piloted us to be in a good spot to see a baby and then we found ourselves having to shut down because the whales came to us and spent a good 20-30 minutes checking us out! We could see them as they went back and forth under the boat, periscoping right next to the boat, blowing and causing rainbows in the morning sun, and showing us their bellies. It was an incredible experience and the guys took good care of us. It was almost like the whales had bought tickets to see us! read more

Spent this afternoon with Jonathan and Kevin, easy check in, easy boarding, great boat only 20 people on board. We cruised out and quickly found a pod of whales. A juvenile whale came over to us and spent almost an hour playing our boat. It was breathtaking he would roll over slow, wave a fun, then flap his tail. When he would lay in his side it was like he looked right at our boat. The crew would keep us informed on the best place to see this whale and take photos. On our early morning tour we saw 12-15 whales, and at one point 2-3 came and stayed within a few feet from our boat. Sergio and Gina were amazing hosts on our whale watching adventure. I picked this boat for a few main reasons - we saw a whale "playing" near the boat for a long time when we were on a different boat (how coolC right?), masks are required the whole time (I didn't see this enforced on other vessels), and they limit the size to 12 people during this time. Gina was super knowledgeable, Sergio was a great captain, and it was a fun 2 hours! We saw lots of whales and learned about their behavior. I'd go again! read more

Gina and Sergio were excellent guides for our private three hour snorkeling tour, which included two toddlers and a four year old along with seven adults! Gina got us prepped with equipment on land, even indulging the four year old who was probably the most excited of us to get his flippers and snorkeling mask on. Something helpful that I didn't know to expect was that they do, in fact, have prescription goggles for those of you who wear glasses, as well as vaseline to help maintain a seal with the snorkeling mask if you have facial hair. You can even play your own music from their bluetooth speaker during the ride! The team of two was happy, reassuring, but very genuine as we conversed during the ride on a cloudy, windy day on the water. Drinks such as water and guava juice are available in the cooler, with granola bars and a refreshing cheese and fruit plate provided later. They did a great job prepping us for snorkeling, many of us being first-timers. Gina joined us in the water and helped point out areas, fish, and sea turtles to check out. She even dove down to try to point out an elusive octopus among the artificial reef we were scoping out. We went to snorkel at two sites - one near Puunoa Point, and the other closer to the Kapalua Cliff House. Gina and Sergio have our whole-hearted thanks for teaching us how to be conscientious snorkeling tourists, and for keeping us entertained with lively conversation and insights. read more

After our captain told us that patience is the key to getting a good sighting, we waited for about 5-7 minutes and low and behold two whales surface within 50 yards of our boat! One of them decided to come check us out and came right up to the boat sticking it's nose out of the water next to us! We went out on April 1, which is near the end of the season. We booked the early morning 7:30 Whale Watching Tour because of the calmer water and the holiday. It was a total of 7 guests on the boat. We were out with Justin and Kevin and had the best time. Right away we were seeing whales and they got us close enough. After a bit of watching this pod of whales, they said to hang on, we're going somewhere else because they had some info from another boat. Next thing you know we are sitting with another boat and just sitting on mom and her calf who were coming right next to the boat. We turned off the engine and just sat. The calf was jumping out of the water and we could watch them swim under the boat. We could even hear them on the hydrophone which is apparently rare this late in the season. This is not one of those 2 for 29.99 tours, this was a little more but you definitely get what you pay for. The knowledge about whales was just fascinating and having connections to other boats about what they are seeing is worth it. read more

We just did our whale watching tour with Kevin and Kale(sp?) of Makai Adventures and had an amazing time. They were super knowledgeable, full of facts and funny. They were clearly experienced at making sure we got the best opportunities to see whales. Kevin was able to spot a group of whales exhibiting mating behavior from a long distance away and was able to maneuver us close enough to watch an amazing 20-25min whale bonanza!
