This was my first visit to Makenna Beach House, and I was genuinely excited to finally try it. I actually chose this location for a moms meetup because I wanted our group to have the opportunity to enjoy the food, drinks, and atmosphere together. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from the start. I was told that I couldn't reserve a table for our group or put up any kind of signage to help everyone find us. ITS FREEZING IN HERE . It will be wonderful in July , not so much in Decembrrrrr. Good thing i had a coat in the car . The tacos here are amazing! I had the Lonestar and the brisket was so incredibly tender . a tiny bit dry but nothing a little sauce didn't solve . The Pier is to die for teriyaki shrimp and pineapple the seasoning nicey spicey exactly how i like it ! I went back for seconds on the Pier . The shrimp was perfect not rubbery or overcooked . The only thing i would improve and i'll ask for next time , double tortilla on the Pier as it's pretty juicy and mine fell apart . It's a finger food so i indulged . Food came out in minutes and had a big selection of sauces for your tacos or burgers. Initially came in for tacos and then realized that one taco for $4-$5 was outrageous so I got a smash burger because I thought the pricing was a bit more sensible. Smash burger is nothing to write home about and is smaller than it seems. Flavor tasted like my dad made something similar on his grill at home. Carne asada fries seems to also lack flavor but is the right amount of flavor for the people of Simi Valley. Thin cut fries with a weird imbalance of fries to sauce. I prefer half and half but they were really heavy on the toppings. Would come again if I really just needed a burger that wasn't in n out but I typically go to Makenna for their coffee. This place was recommended to me by my neighbor. So far I have only tried some of the coffee drinks. I enjoyed the blended drink I ordered. And it was reasonably priced. My neighbors ordered quite a few different tacos that smelled amazing. I will definitely be going back soon to try the food. The menu is so big. It's really hard to choose because there are so many items. Hopefully soon they will have a big menu to view. They were just taped up in the walls so it was hard to view with two people and look at them standing in line. I felt pressured to hurry up and order because of the set up. But the employees were very friendly and helpful. The salsa bar they had sounded awesome. They had quite a few to choose from. The flavors sounded great. Food Only- This new restaurant has been on my list to visit as I am a big fan of breakfast burritos, so in great anticipation, I was keen on finally trying their burrito to see if it satisfied my test. I have been to their other shop in town- which is a coffee shop- good place for fancy coffee drinks. First impressions- food only. On a Monday morning, we popped in to try their breakfast at 8am, opening time. We were first puzzled on where to order and to find the menu. The menu is located on the walls- not a sign, but a posted paper menu. For some, this menu may be hard to read- I hope the restaurant plans to build a permanent menu that is easier to read over the cashier area. Also, this will help in identifying where the cashier is. We decided to try their two offerings of breakfast burritos- we ordered the breakfast burrito (slightly under 12 dollars) and the California burrito for 12 dollars. So how were the burritos? The breakfast burrito had limited eggs inside, mostly filled with fries that were very salty. To salty. Fries were already prepared thus not fresh. No single flavor stood out in the burrito. For the CA burrito- it had limited eggs as well- two small fried eggs (barely noticed the eggs), chopped bacon and very limited guacamole. The guacamole was barely noticeable. Not sure why this is called a CA burrito, expect for the light smear of green coloring, which may represent guacamole. No distinct flavoring from the guacamole. The tortilla was good- not sure if it was homemade, but had a proper flour flavor and was fresh. In summary, we felt the burritos were average and not worth the price. Based on our experience on taste and quality, we would not order these again. As for atmosphere- the restaurant is nicely decorated for a semi-fast food restaurant. Very fun décor. The restaurant seemed to be very clean- mind you we were there when they just opened. The music was a bit loud and rough for the morning, especially on a Monday- maybe more appropriate for night time and/or when more people are inside. Staff was friendly- and aimed to please. As mentioned, I would not order the burritos again, but would be interested in experiencing other items on the menu. read more
