Just got married last week. I'm the groom and Kelly Yi did the makeup for the bride. So this review is from my perspective. My fiancée at the time came back from the makeup trial and was very happy with her experience with Kelly. On the wedding day, the makeup was done really well but Kelly's rudeness ruined it for the bride, my sister (a bridesmaid) and the mother of the groom. My bride (now wife) told me how she pestered her about payment all day and even to the point of hovering next to her while peeing, 5 mins before walking to the alter. My sister, who was holding the wedding dress so the bride could go pee, had to tell her to back off. She even bothered my mom for payment even though she was late getting dressed. It wasn't until one of our wedding planner assistants caught her asking for money, and then pulling her aside to have a chat that she stopped. My wife remembers the wedding day as magical and perfect, but her one bad taste is Kelly. She does good makeup, but if you care about an experience, I wouldn't recommend her. I got her contact info from my best friend who worked with her as well for her wedding a few years back. She did my makeup and hair long ago as the maid of honor when we first met, then my engagement shoot, and finally the day of our wedding. She travelled to our venue which was my in-law's home in La Canada and brought her assistant, Haejin with her to work on all of us. My whole bridal party and both mothers looked stunning! Kelly was not only super accomodating of my crazy schedule, she really took my makeup preferences into consideration before she started on my look. Kelly did my makeup for my bridal shower and wedding. I had 4 wedding makeup trials in total and ultimately decided to go with Kelly and I had no regrets about it! She is a really talented makeup artist. I'm really particular and get disappointed easily when I don't look as great as I expect to in my head.. But there was absolutely no disappointment on my wedding day at all. My mom had her makeup done by Kelly as well and she looked nothing short of amazing. The makeup lasted all day long, from about 11am-midnight and didn't require any touch-ups at all. And mind you, I don't have flawless skin. I usually get oily and was worried that my makeup might run off after a few hours in the sun, but I was worried for nothing. And personality-wise, she's very easy to talk to and really sweet. She'll listen to what you want and deliver. I've had some other makeup artists who say they're listening, but at the end your makeup looks nothing like you had wanted/expected. The bridesmaids makeup was done by Kelly's assistant. My bridesmaids were not as vocal and their makeup initially looked a little intense. I asked the assistant to tone the makeup down a little and she was more than willing to re-touch their makeup and they looked great as well. She was extremely talented, professional and really took care of our wedding party on our big day. On top of that, we were one of those couples that lost their rings before the ceremony and Kelly drove back down to LA (on her way to Monterey) to make sure that the ring was found. This place is great (: I came as a bridesmaid with 6 other girls and the bride and we all had a really good time. The staff were friendly and sincere throughout the entire process and they made sure to get exactly what we wanted. There were some times when one of our hair-do's was sticking out but they fixed that ASAP. I also wasn't sure about getting my make up done because I use eyelid glue and a lot of people are just really inexperienced when it comes to making folds but Kelly was so professional, knowing exactly what I wanted by using tape and making sure it didn't come out awkward. BEWARE, Kelly has the MAGIC TOUCH. Personally, the most makeup I put on is BB cream and eyeliner. I made an appointment last minute after trying to decide if I wanted to get my makeup done by hills beauty with the bride and another bridesmaid or go with my yelp gut. The only other time I had gotten my hair & makeup done was for high school prom. I looked like a potato in my pictures. That's when I learned that when you go to shops, you receive less attention (especially when the bride should be receiving the spotlight). I have a round face without bangs, so I find my face harder to work with (thus the need for special attention). Still, if I was going to shell out a good sum of money, I might as well look good! So I decided to book Kelly and boy did I NOT regret. At first I thought the look was too heavy considering that I normally don't wear makeup, but I did not not like it. In fact, I was so obsessed with how pretty she made me look, I consider myself lucky I wasn't pulled over in traffic for constantly looking in the mirror. She normally has a separate hair dresser but I called too last minute. Still, she made my hair look just as wonderful. I did bring hair accessories from Claire's she could work with. When I got to the wedding venue, I was so curious as to how everyone's hair & makeup turned out. And I couldn't help but feel bad because my makeup and hair looked much MUCH better than the those who had gotten theirs done at hills beauty. Their hair actually started falling apart towards the middle of the wedding! Thank you so much Kelly for such a good time. I had so much fun talking with her and just getting pampered :) I recommend her if you want a bang for your buck. She does charge more than shops, but I rather pay more for better quality than paying for decent quality. You can really tell the difference, trust me. Kelly is one of the best artist in the L.A. area - after having 2 trials, I ultimately decided to go with Kelly. My mom was giving me such a hard time because she kept asking me WHY won't I do my own makeup on my wedding day and that I should save money... it's a crazy idea to me... I tell her impatiently "Because!!! It's a stressful day!! The last thing I want to worry about is how I looked!!!!!" She listens to you carefully, and she is meticulous - with a steady, confident hand, and superb accuracy of placement. From one artist to another, she has an excellent eye for color and proportion - All I had to do is sit there and relax - and, in hindsight, that was the most calming 2 hours of my wedding day, and I really really needed it. The quiet time helped me stay calm and happy and so I could actually enjoy my wedding day. Other than for my wedding and the other trial I had with the artist, I've had my makeup done once more when my sister-in-law got married~ Objectively, Kelly was the best out of the 3 artists, which is why I am writing this review. ;) She is worth every cent I paid her - can't say the same thing about the DJ we hired though! lol... I would and WILL recommend anyone and everyone to Kelly for their makeup. She is truly an artist. Kelly did both my engagement shoot makeup and my makeup for my wedding day, and I was completely 100% satisfied. She is extremely meticulous (my makeup took an hour and a half at least!) and she listened to what I wanted. If I made even the slightest frown, she'd say, "Talk to me. Tell me what you're thinking." She also checked up on me multiple times when I was getting my hair done by her partner to make sure I was comfortable with how my hair was looking. She went above and beyond in every way. She even packed me a foundation puff with powder on it to touch up during the day because I didn't have any with me, which came in handy after I cried during the wedding. During my time at Kelly's studio, two other girls came in, I think for their engagement shoot makeup. Kelly worked on them while I was getting my hair done. Like me, they came in looking... disheveled and frumpy, and left seriously looking like models. The transformations were incredible. They both were BEAUTIFUL. I had my makeup done by Kelly for my engagement photoshoot, and I couldn't be happier with her work! Kelly is very detailed, KNOWS HOW TO DO ASIAN MAKEUP, and will make you look amazing. She herself is super pretty, really put-together. Not that that matters, but haven't you ever been to a manicurist, hairdresser, etc., whose own nails, hair didn't look so hot? Doesn't garner much confidence huh. Well, Kelly is a true professional, and I'd recommend her to anyone looking for a makeup artist. I also had my hair done by her hairperson (I don't know her name) and she was really great as well. She came in with rolling box of hair stuff, did her magic (light waves in my hair), and left. The hairdresser speaks only Korean, but Kelly did a good job of translating. Hair and makeup together was a total of $250--not the cheapest, but I think she might give you a better deal if you also have your wedding makeup done with her (I can't since it's a destination wedding). Let me preface by saying Kelly is great with bridal make up- for brides I give this place 5 stars. The girl that did my hair was really sweet and listened to what I wanted as well. The problem you may run into here is with the assistant make up artists. The one that worked on my sister was HORRIBLE. I saw she had lash glue everywhere and no eyeliner and asked her to clean that up. Two minutes later I look at my sisters eye and the eyelash was falling off. I pointed that the lashes were falling off and she rudely said "I got it!!" 1. RUDE!!! 2. If I'm paying you money to do my sisters makeup you should probably know how to put lashes on properly and not snap at me because I pointed it out. She also ended up cussing in Korean because she couldn't get it to stick on. If you do have bridesmaids going here make sure that you give specific instructions and keep an eye on their makeup. I did a trial run a few months before and was happy then, but when it came to the actual day, I was blown away. My four bridesmaids, mother, and mother-in-law all got their hair and makeup done that morning, and we were out of there in record time. I don't really know much about makeup and rarely put anything on except for eyeliner, so I was worried about looking too done up. But she has the gift to make you look like the best, most glamorous (in a natural way) version of yourself. Despite of their great reputation, I did not like it at all. Kelly is great at natural makeup and she can create what you exactly ask for. Even if you do not know what look you want, she will guide you through it. Her assistance were great too. They kept on giving touch ups on my bridesmaids. Make up lasted long. I honestly did not need major touch up until the midnight except some lipsticks ( I got my make up done around 2pm). Our fake eyelashes stayed on all day too . Kelly did my hair and makeup for my engagement photo session, and I could not be happier about it. I have never had my makeup done professionally, and the couple of times I have had my hair done, it has been a disaster. So, I was a little nervous, but from the other lovely girls' photos she has done makeup for, I trusted her to do a good job for me, too. The best things about Kelly: 1) She accommodated me at 6am (!) so that I could get started with my all day shoot at 8am. 2) She was so gracious about also doing a quick bit of makeup and hair for my fiance (who was so glad he got it done after - and he is not into that stuff at all). 3) She is so personable and friendly, and communication via email and text prior to the day made coordination so easy. 4) She is amazing at what she does!!!!! I have the usual Asian concerns of hooded eyes, thin brows, wanting to look natural but still enhanced for the camera, thick hair...and she knew exactly what I needed and really customized to my face. And the makeup lasted all day (minus a little under eye concealer touch up and lipstick refreshing as expected). I was here for the bridesmaid hair and make up. the make up wasn't terrible but the corners of my fake eyelashes kept coming off so i ended up removing them before the ceremony. The make up artist was a very young girl who didn't seem to have a lot of experience. She didn't seem to have a good sense of color. I had to tell her to fix the eyebrow color, eye shadow color as well as lipstick color. But all of this wasn't as bad as what I was about to witness. after the make up was done, I sat on the chair to do my hair. I didn't give the hair artist any specific direction, just ask for something very natural with my hair down. I trusted she would know what to do but BAD BAD BAD mistake! she teased my hair so much in the crown, I looked like a conehead! A conehead that came out of the 80s. It made me look at least 15 years older (i'm in my early 30s but i looked like a mom from the 80s) It was so shockingly bad I had no words or way to react to it. The owner saw my face of total shock and asked what's wrong. what's wrong?!!? you can't see that i have a cone head with a tacky hair style from the 80s? I know I shouldn't expect much from these hair salons... I think most of them are bad, not too many hair stylists know what they're doing... but this was just too bad to let it pass and forget it never happened. The studio was far overbooked than what they can handle with inexperienced staffs. This review is way over due. I can't express how lucky I felt to have stumbled upon Kelly's yelp page 2 months prior to my wedding. She is by far one of the best makeup artist I have had do my makeup, she is very talented and pays close attention to details. I've had four different makeup artists do my makeup. The makeup from the other artists were either too dark and bold for my taste or they were too muted and seemed like something I can do. Kelly really listened to what I had to say about the look I was going for and truly delivered. I got married on August of this year. It was (no doubt) one of the hottest day of the season. My wedding ceremony and the reception were outdoor. I was beyond concerned that the makeup would melt away before I even had a chance to walk down the aisle. But this didn't happen, the makeup stayed the whole day. Other then needing to use a sponge with some powder to pat my face when it got oily (which is to be expected) and reapply lipstick, I didn't have to do any other touch ups. I can't forget to mention Jenny the hairstylist. She did a great job with my hair. I received several complements on both my hair and makeup and would highly recommend both Kelly and Jenny! Kelly and her team are amazing. My friends, mom, and I had our make up done by her and we loved it. We looked good but natural. And it lasted an entire day. Initially I wasn't sure how my Caucasian friends' would look after the make up because I thought this was a primarily Asian make up place.
