My husband and I decided to visit Makimono for their AYCE experience last weekend. The place was packed when we arrived but the service was quick and we were taken to our seats right away. You order your dishes off an iPad and the food is brought pretty quickly. The best part is the cute robot cat that makes its way to your table with the dishes. Focus on the sashimi and their specialty sushi rolls which were delicious. We tried pretty much everything on the menu from their appetizers to chow mein style noodles to their sushi pizza that was an interesting take. Pretty good food for the price! Waiter was pretty attentive even if it was crowded due to Anime North happening. We got seated fairly quick (15min wait) and server almost immediately. Relatives invited us over and I was excited to be having sushi. However, when I checked out the Yelp reviews, it had a less than a 4 star average. I'm really torn, I try to look for 4 stars and higher, if possible. I don't remember the last time I purposefully went to a 2 star place to eat. But I was surprised by the friendly robots and staff, and really fresh seafood (heard the fishing flapping in the kitchen), just kidding. Late lunch on a Tuesday. It was not busy as it was past 1pm. The entire restaurant was really clean. Bathroom was nice too. Quiet atmosphere. It would be nice to come for dinner as the interior had nice lighting in the darker color. Had Sashimi Deluxe. The salad and miso soup that came with the order was delicious. Miso soup had rich taste as they were using enough miso paste to make the soup. Sashimi was good as well. However, I felt like the portion balance between sashimi and the rice bowl was not the best as I seem to run out of sashimi before the rice was gone. Other than that, everything was good. Came here for dinner with a friend during anime north weekend. I ordered the butter fish roll and gyoza. I enjoyed the sushi as it had a great fish to rice ratio. This is my first negative review on yelp! I love sushi so much, this restaurant had low reviews but was the only sushi restaurant open for Sunday lunch in the area. I thought, how bad can it be? It was BAD. My husband and I didn't even finish our food, we threw the rest out. We got take out- California roll, crispy roll, and spicy salmon roll. I will admit it was on the cheaper side so at least there was that. But the fish and rice did NOT taste fresh, and the avocado was mushy. There was nothing spicy about the salmon roll. Chose this location for dinner with friends on a Thursday night as it was a convenient location for almost everyone. The place was quite big and spacious. Since it was a Thursday evening, there was not alot of customers and many tables were empty. We ordered off the iPad and all the food arrived through the automatic robots. Since it was an AYCE, the sushi was nothing special and tasted the same as any other AYCE places. However, they do serve the sweet shrimp sashimi and deep fried custard buns. COVID review: During the pandemic, Makimono has opened up their ayce option maybe once or twice. This review will focus on both that option and the current options that makimono offers. Starting with the Ayce: during their dine in option when the government still allowed it, they took very strong precautions my boyfriend and I liked. They wore face shields and masks, had disposable chopsticks, cups. The food was the same as its was before the pandemic and service was still pretty much the same. Nothing special there. Surprised the wait staff still recognize us and they're all doing well ^^ Fast forward to today: take out, ordering online or through the phone or delivery are now their only options. At the beginning of the pandemic, their take out still was pretty high quality, however, as of December 2020, their quality has decreased. The lunch special does come with a soup and salad and is a great price. The salmon quality has went down though. It's still better than mall sushi. Hoping the quality goes back up. read more

We decided to try this place on a Wednesday evening and I have to say that overall it was a good experience. The place was practically empty when we arrived but it did pick up as the evening progressed. The decor is kind of old but I'm not there for that. I care about the food and service. Wait staff was very friendly and attentive. The food did take a bit to arrive but we were in deep conversation mode so it didn't bother me. They have one of those Robot sushi servers. Cute but it kept banging into the table which I found funny. Not bothered at all by it. Food was pretty good. Great selection as well. The only complaint I have about this place is the 2 hour limit. We were not told that when we arrived. We were basically told that when they came to remove the IPad. I was kind of stunned. Why the limit on a Wednesday night? The place wasn't even half full. Made no sense and this should have been clarified at the start of our meal. If I had known about the time limit I would have spent more time eating and less time talking. Things have definitely changed and today on the 14th of August (Friday), they are officially open for AYCE sushi as an option, and to dine inside the restaurant as well. Maximum of 10 guests inside at a time. We had the first reservation when they first reopened, so for a while, it felt like the entire restaurant was rented by us :) A party of 7 came in after and another 2 people wanted to come but that would've made it 11 including us. Nice to see Makimono is strict on the policy and apologized to the 2 people who wanted a table but couldn't get one. Ever since the covid pandemic started, the AYCE was not available, only a la carte. You could also order on a delivery app as well but other than that, they've been mostly serving takeout. Once patios opened, they did have a patio, to the left of the restaurant front doors. There is plexiglass up everywhere for safety, everyone is wearing a mask/required to, when not at their table. They have disposable everything (cups, straws, any sauces to dip in), servers are wearing gloves (and sometimes protective gear for their eyes). Maximum 10 people inside at the moment. Makimono is taking amazing precautions. Price for AYCE went up ($24.99 Friday or weekends)but is completely justified. Had almost no anxiety with covid still out there and eating at Makimono. We got to see the manager, Doris, whom we know well from when we were regulars pre-covid. She recognized us and asked us how everything was. Onto what you've been waiting for!! The food! The food surprisingly hasn't really changed quality. When their ayce wasn't open, my girlfriend and I would get their a la carte - rolls tasted exactly the same (salmon and avocado inside the rolls were super fresh) . Edamame was good, beef short ribs were amazing (unlike at sparkly restaurant where we couldn't even bite into them), sashimi was perfect, shrimp tempura was great, seafood udon tasted great. Pretty much everything was on point! Salmon sashimi was so fresh that I have to dock stars off sparkly (see the review for this place) - because now I have makimono to compare to sparkly (what I mean by this is AYCE sushi during covid), sparkly even with our VIP 10% off discount is not worth it. Makimono really takes the crown here. Would definitely come again. As you can see, Makimono hasn't always been the most perfect place (look at previous reviews) but I have to say they are taking COVID very seriously and care about their customers and their staff! 5/5 the first 5 for Makimono! So I wanted to come here because I was feeling indecisive. Buffet/AYCE is great for sampling all kinds of things. My son isn't a big eater- he basically eats like a toddler but we can't leave him alone unattended. They still charged us $15 for him even though he basically ate rice and some Edamame. Go when hungry. Sampling adds up. They have the cute robot thing and a time limited seating of 90 minutes. Wife and I decided to try this restaurant as we both enjoy Asian food. The adventure starts with my ordering a martini. The waiteress, who barely understood English did not know what a martini is even though it's on the menu. She went away and then came back with a bottle of Martini and Rossi vermouth. I tried to explain it to her, but no chance with her limited knowledge of the language. Next, I ordered an appetizer and a main dish. Another waiteress brings me the main dish which I obviously refused. I then had to explain that the appetizer is served BEFORE the main dish. The service was terrible and the food mediocre at best. We were in the area and decided with AYCE sushi at Makimono. The restaurant is dimly-lit with a dark finish. It looks pretty nice for an intimate dine out. They have a private room in the back that looks like it could seat at least 25 guests. It wasn't busy in my opinion when we came by for a late lunch. They didn't have a host at the front so we had to wait for the server to seat us. They sat us in front of where the chef make their sushi. They gave us one tablet/iPad to select our orders which took awhile because we were group of more than 6. Most sushi restaurants would provide us 2 tablets to order from with our party size. After submitting our orders we still had to wait for the server to confirm our orders. Which made us wait more because there seem to be only 2 servers for the whole restaurant. Even with these "prime seats" that were so close to the kitchen - we had to wait quite some time. I'm curious as to how they wash their dishes because one of our sauce bowl had a dried up piece of seaweed stuck in it. How did they miss that? This restaurant has a small selection of sake. We went with the server's recommendation for a jelly sparkling sake which was the cheapest on the menu, priced at $15 for a 6oz can. It was pretty good! I need to find out where to buy this or I have to come back here just to order this. The sushi had too much rice. They placed the slice of fish on a pretty big bed of rice. This can make one pretty full from all the rice and there goes the AYCE. The maki rolls were a decent size. I had to ask for ginger slices to cleanse my palate twice and waited probably a total of 20 minutes. My food got cold as I was waiting to cleanse the fishy taste in my mouth. You think they thought I was asking them to bring it at the end of my meal. The desserts took quite a while to come out too. By this time we were the last few people left sitting at the restaurant. The lunch crowd that came after us had already gone. Did they even eat? We have no idea. This place has room for improvements considering they have many other locations in other cities. If you don't mind the waiting game then come by here if you are near the airport. I wouldn't go out of my way to make a trip here.. well maybe just for the sake. Came here on a Friday night for dinner and made reservations for 7pm, we were immediately seated. Other people that were ahead of us- shouldn't have been upset with us. We made reservations ahead of time and our table was ready for us when we got there. TIP: DO make reservations, saves you from waiting on the side for a long time! For some reason, there was only one host at the front on a Friday night. That is very odd to me seeing it's the beginning of the weekend and there should be two or three. While the girl was bringing people to their tables, there was no one at the front to keep the line moving. The whole place was packed and we counted three servers. We understand that it was busy but they were SUPER short on staff. Our food took forever to come to our tables, we were going to order drinks and the lady walked away after 5 seconds before taking our drinks... Food would come out without the sauce or so slowly. Server said she will bring us the sauce and never did. Another server said he would bring us ginger, never did. It was just super frustrating. Our food order was so slow. We did like 5 rounds on the IPAD after waiting and waiting for our food. 20 mins would pass and we would look around to see if our food was coming since it was crossed off on the order details. After 2 hours of non-consistent service, food came 5 minutes before we decided to order our dessert. There are many reasons why I would not come back to this location. 1.) They were short staffed and unorganized - with a huge line up at the front, someone could have cleaned the 8 tables beside us and sat people down. We timed it from the moment the large family left. It was about 23 minutes before someone decided to clean the table and sit 3 groups down. 2.) The food came too slowly - I swear we should have ordered everything the moment we sat down. --___-- 3.) With what we were paying, 29 per person, we were simply receiving the worst experience ever, food quality was par, there was simply no good thing to say about this location. I wouldnt say Makimono is a bad sushi bar, but in the GTA where there are TONS of great ones- Makimono doesn't look good. The restaurant looks nice, good decor and overall good atmosphere. Makimono tends to fall short on service, speed and quality. For AYCE, the time between ordering and recieving food is far and long. The usual teppanyaki comes out quick- like teriyaki beef and kalbi ribs, but they are very sub par compared to the most average sushi joint. But any sushi or maki roll takes a LONG time to reach your table. Even the basic spicy salmon roll took some time and we even asked if it was coming or not. The restaurant wasnt even that busy, with about half the restaurant with open tables. So I am not sure if it's just disorganization, short on staff or the restauranr itself. Ordering off the iPad is always fun. They have Appetizers, Dim Sum, Entrees, Udon, Rolls, Handrolls, Sushi, Sashimi, Asian Cuisine, and Dessert. Fish is fresh. Rolls are decent. The dim sum is delicious and basic if that's what you're craving. The shrimp dishes I had were tasty too. Beef sashimi was great, as were the beef rolls. No tuna on the menu - that always bums me out. And I didn't have any this time, but this place does have bomb custard buns. If anything, come for those. read more

Makimono is an all you can eat sushi place at the south end of Dixon Road right near the highway 401. Being close to several major hotels and the convention center, it has a lot of competition in the area. There's quite a large variety to choose from, but overall the quality is just average. I found the sushi to be heavy on the rice, and light on the fish. The salmon hand roll for example was mostly rice with some decent size chunks of salmon in the middle. The Seafood Pad Thai had a grand total of one shrimp in it, and two slices of processed fish roll. AYCE sushi restaurants are typically not as good as the à la cart version, but this one was slightly below the average for me. I can't see myself ever making it a point to select Makimono, but if I got dragged here by others who wanted to go, I would suck it up. read more

I came with a group of 8 people after Anime North convention ended sunday evening; it was a 30 minute wait. My seat was wet which i think was wiped with the same cloth they wiped the table... Anyway... the soy sauce container was leaking at the table. We let them know later to replace. After ordering our meal the first dish to arrive was fried rice, pad thai and then my sushi dish: Rocknroll $7.50+tax. Everyone else who ordered a bentos, udon and teriyaki had to wait much longer. It took the servers 1.5 hours and our prompting to finally deliver the teriyaki dinner and to top it off, they were rushing us to clear the table after some of us ordered and was eating dessert, despite the fact that we were delayed by their service. The rolls itself tasted ok but only 5 pieces (although larger than the average roll). No need for sauce. Wasnt that hungry. The bentos which were about $14 had more value i guess. So by the end of the meal, they gave us separate bills. They autocharged 15% tip however they charge it on top of tax so it was actually 17% tip. I thoroughly dislike the deception and the fact that the service wasnt that great yet i have have no choice about tip. read more

Went to this restaurant for Anime North. Ordered the Bento Box which came with Teriyaki Chicken, Tempura, 6 California Rolls as well as rice, miso soup and seaweed salad. The Teriyaki Chicken was okay, the sauce was decent but the meat itself wasn't too flavorful. The tempura was excellent, had the just the crisp but light batter I like. The california rolls were also good, and I was able to watch the chefs prepare all of their sushi to order. In terms of service, it was very quick, especially considerinf how packed it was with convention attendees, though not particularly friendly. The one major complaint I had was that the restaurant decided to charge an extra "15% service charge" (separate from tips) during the Anime North weekend which was a clear cashgrab and wasn't communicated until I got the the bill. We arrived at the place at 8.50 pm, and the hostess told us they close at 10 pm, we said it was enough time. After we sat down the very rude hostess told us to order fast because they close the kitchen at 10, so we started ordering super fast for ourselves and the other half of the group who were still parking. The food started arriving, and the hostess was yelling at our group about what we will drink fast because they have to close. We could see people at the kitchen yelling and being angry. We asked to take some home as we were being so rushed, and this is the best part.... the wanted to charge is $1 per cucumber roll left over. Even though we understand the rules of all you can eat, our request was very reasonable, we were a large party, we knew the waiters and cooks wanted to go home, as they were explicitly and loudly telling us throughout the short course of the meal, but we also were paying for all you can eat, and they seem to not have time for us to eat it, they were so rude, so yelling, I have never experienced something like this. Is like they didn't even care that we were all spending money not only on food but on drinks and alcohol. I'm sorry to say, I think from now on we will avoid this place all together. I never saw a waitress so angry fighting with its costumers over a left over veggie roll.
