Boy were we disappointed.
We ate here yesterday night for dinner. It was quite busy, and we took that as a good sign. We had high hopes for this place based on the Yelp reviews. I really don't understand how highly rated this place is.
Parking, location, setting (3/5):
The neighborhood is catered to cheap eats. Walking in the entrance way of the restaurant, it's covered in cheap cardboard. There's also a sign posted informing customers not to park in the nearby Indian grocer.
It's a small little joint with tables tightly packed in together. It's quite casual based on the lack of decor. The ambiance is similar to Pho Metro nearby, except the tables are so close to each other that you'll hear every bit of conversation of your nearby neighbours. Seeing that we live in Scarborough, we're familiar with it.
Small parking lot in small plaza in the Warden and Lawrence neighborhood. I can appreciate the free parking. Extra point for convenience since we live in Scarborough. We don't really go downtown on weeknights.
Another thing:
The pictures posted in the photos on Google make it look much more upscale than it is. The place looks nothing like that. It looks and feels like a "cheap eat" place. Fabric is not wrapped on the chairs as it is in the pictures. They're the standard cheap, scratched-up chairs you see at any cheap Korean restaurant. They must have rented/borrowed the nicer chairs and nicer place settings for the photos.
Service (1.5/5):
How could I speak to it when there it didn't quite exist? None of the two servers were rude, but they were rather inattentive.
To place our order, we tried to wave a server down three times before they took our order.
We ordered tea, asked for refills twice and stopped asking for it since the two servers stopped responding. They did give us a larger jug of water, but it was rather troublesome to wave the servers down repeatedly to refill the water jug/tea pot.
The Steamed Pork and Kimchi we ordered was very spicy, and so you can see, we needed to have our water refilled. We turned off the burner by accident, and one of the servers stared at us. She did eventually come over to turn the burner back on.
No one came to check on us during our dinner. Admittedly it was quite busy when we first came in at ~730PM. However, the crowd had died down when our food started to arrive. We ran out of napkins and had to get up to retrieve our own napkins.
Food (2/5):
We ordered the Bulgogi in the Hot Pot, Beef and Leek Soup, and Steamed Pork and Kimchi. Both the Bulgogi and Soup each came with purple rice.
Side Dishes Banchan:
Standard fare. We received eggplant, potatoes, kimchi, sprouts, green beans, glass noodles, and some other dish that I can't remember. Sadly, one of the better parts of our meal. We didn't finish them.
Beef and Leek Soup ($14.99):
The soup was alright; not bad. It had beef, Chinese leeks, onions, and sprouts. Wish I could comment more on it. It wasn't very memorable and we didn't finish it.
Bulgogi in the Hot Pot ($14.99):
We both love bulgogi and glass noodles and it's such a popular dish at any Korean joint. Both the beef and the noodles were noticeably overcooked, but very tasty. Beef was nice and soft with a flavourful kick. Noodles were sticky from the sauce and being overcooked, but delicious. We finished all of it.
Steamed Pork and Kimchi ($39.99):
Don't order this. This was really, really, really terrible. Laughably so. Awful. It had kimchi, tofu, and steamed pork.
The kimchi was a giant uncut block of cabbage. That's fine. What's not fine is the sauce in the stew. I would not consider us noobs to spicy foods and we generally love spicy food (we like food in general). The sauce was so spicy that it was inedible. The cabbage was very soggy and must have been sitting the stew's sauce for some time because it tasted like it completely absorbed the sauce.
The tofu was the egg tofu you buy in Asian grocers. It was just thrown in the hot pot and did not have a chance to absorb the sauce (which was probably a good thing). We both love that stuff but for ~$40, we expected more.
Now to the highlight of the dish, the steamed pork. The pork was okay in itself; nothing special. The sauce, as mentioned repeatedly, a nightmare. We barely touched this dish. We took the pork and tofu home in a container because we hate waste. Yet I'm sitting here wondering if any of us will touch it.
Bill (1/5):
We paid $90 in total for two people. Rather high considering the dining experience we received.
The bill itself with taxes was $79.07. ($14.99 + $14.99 + $39.99 + $9.10 HST)
At the time, I tipped ~10% ($9.03). Reflecting on it now, I feel I shouldn't have done so at all.
Overall (1.8/5):
The place is priced for a sit-down setting but the food, setting and service do not match. We will not be returning. The highest marks were for parking and it's convenience.
There's better food at the Galleria. Go there, go anywhere! read more
