I have been bring my vehicle to Mak's for years and my father had been for many many years. My Mom who still lives in the area always brings her car to Mak's for Smogs and oil changes. Mak the owner is wonderful. He is honest and straightforward. He has always given me good advice on what I need to do to get my car to pass. Few years ago my car barely passed and he told me to be sure to get a basic tuneup before the next smog or it wouldn't pass. I did and the car passed with flying colors. Yes it is a small place and you might have to wait a bit if there are people ahead of you but Mak is very efficient and quick so it shouldn't be that long. He will even advise you to start your car and get it good and warmed up for a few minutes while you wait just before he is ready for you. A cold car is more likely to fail than one that is nice and warmed up. I am just sad that the DMV made me go to a "Star" smog station, whatever that means, for my last two smogs. Mak's is a Smog Only station so I don't know why he wasn't on the list of "Star" smog stations. read more

After reviewing coupon online I went to Maks Smog at 11100 Fair Oaks Blvd in Fair Oaks, CA. I had a knee brace on my left leg and could not walk normally; I parked and went inside. The guy at the counter said I would be next, less than 10 minutes, and it would be $78. I told him I saw coupon online and it says you get $10 off for a smog and he told me he could only do $5 off for a total of $73; I asked why he couldn't give me the price that was advertised which was still $30 more than the other smog place I was at last (that was closed when I went by today) and I showed him the price of $48 including CA certificate but the guy/employee didn't answer me. Instead he then asked me how much my car was for sale, etc. like a used car salesman...when I saw a man on crutches walking up to the door so I went and held the door open for him so he could get inside... as there was no way to get up to the door and open it with 2 crutches. Next the employee left to go out and help the man on crutches so I waited in lobby, having to stand as I could not sit due to recent injury; after he went outside and helped the man in the crutches hook up a Uhaul trailer, etc. then he came back inside and I asked if he was able to smog my vehicle and showed him a photo of the CARB E.O. numbers I had for the exhaust parts that had been replaced a few years ago and if I needed the paperwork for it which I had at home and he said no, just the number; I said ok great. Then the guy said hold on, let me pull this truck out real quick then I can do yours (truck was the older gentleman's that was waiting in the lobby) but then the guy/employee did not come back inside; instead I watched him pull in a dark gray Prius, for a man that was of a different ethnicity/race than I was and who was not physically disabled as I was; and who never even came inside the lobby. As I walked towards the door, the older gentleman said you were next; I replied I know I guess the guy lied and he's made me stand too long on one bad leg (knee) for 21 minutes now so then I left the establishment. The owner of this business should be absolutely ASHAMED! The owner should hire a competent and honest employee that cares and accommodates persons with disability so they are ADA compliant per CA code requirements, otherwise this establishment should not be allowed to do business in CA. Needed a smog check so I stopped in to get my required DMV smog check, you have to bring your DMV paperwork so that they scan it properly. The guy was super nice and said he can get me in right away and takes 15 mins max. They took my keys and drove it into garage and I was out the door within 15 mins. They give you all the paperwork and the fees are all transparent and posted on the wall. Very good service and I will keep going back for my smog check needs! read more

We needed a smog done and decided to try Mack's close to home, and I have driven by it many times. Prices were clearly posted on white board very specific as to what the charges were for different year cars. Price within a few dollars of the last place we had it done 2 years ago. We drove in and there was one car just finished and they got us right in. The woman technician (who is licensed with dmv) did a great job and got us out in a hurry with smog certificate in hand. we will take our other car there when due this year. read more

I came here twice hoping to get a smog check. The first time although it was still open the man working the counter said the mechanic went home early. I just tried again around 2 pm on a Tuesday. I drove up and the mechanic said he was eating his lunch and come back in about a half an hour. So I decided to go elsewhere as this was the convenient time for me. First, the employees at Mak's seem like nice people - friendly and service minded. That said, I clipped out a coupon that showed the price for a smog test to be $37.75 + $8.25 for the Star certificate. This is pretty much what I paid two years ago at the same place. When I arrived today, the price quickly rose to $61 - the extra $15 for them being a "Star Test Station." When I asked why the extra fee wasn't listed on the coupon, I was told that this was the owner's coupon. I left without getting my car checked out. Don't use this location for U-Haul! I went to pick up my U-Haul on a Sunday and the lock for the cargo area was put on backwards so I could not use the combination given to open it and get my key to the truck. When I arrived, a worker came out to quickly turn me away stating that they would close their shop in an hour. I told him I just got off the phone with him to perform a smog check, and it took some time to convince him. The workers appeared confused, did not seem to communicate with each other. When I went into the shop none of the workers were wearing a mask, nor did they enforce other customers to wear a mask in their small waiting area. I went to the Smog and Go down the road (where I originally told my husband to go but he misunderstood) to get my car smogged and it was $45 for the smog and came out to $50 with taxes and fees. Bad business!! Rude/mean guy!! YELLED at me!! Borderline fraud!! Used to take our cars here for smog. Never had any problems. They always did one re-test for free, like most places. Took my car in after getting it fixed to pass smog, and it failed. He showed me the code and why it didn't pass. I told him that's exactly what we had fixed a week ago. My mechanic told me to drive it 50 to100 miles to see if the check engine light comes back on. It I did that, so I was surprised it didn't pass. This guy told me to drive it 250 miles or 15 cycles of turning it on and off. Also told me now they charge $25 for re-test. (Not really happy about that bc other places don't charge for retest, but whatever). So I do what he tells me and I send my husband in to re-test. He calls me and says he's coming back home that they can't do the smog test Because they have to be able to turn the car off and on during testing. My car has a really weird Ignition and for some reason people have a hard time starting it and stopping it.So now I have to go and take the car in myself. I bring my husband with me. I asked the guy Is this true? Do you have to be able to turn the car off and on during testing? He says yes you cannot get an accurate read. I repeated myself back to him so I could make sure that he knew what he was saying to me. So then I tell him interesting because when I got my car smogged first by the female who worked there, she didn't turn my car off and on. I told her of the issue I had and I left the car running for her while She did the test. So if the information he is telling me is correct that would mean that the first test was not an accurate read. As I'm starting to explain this to him he starts back pedaling and saying that's not what he said. I am calm and telling him "no, you are incorrect. You are now changing your story because I caught you in a lie." Then he starts yelling at me and telling me I'm "trying to close his shop down" (not what I was trying to do) and he doesn't have to help me and he is not going to work on my car. My husband is right there and he's saying "yeah dude you told me this and now you're changing your story." Like really you are gonna yell at a female who is there with her child because you were trying to rip me off and I was smart enough to catch you???? I took down his posted Information to report him to the Better Business Bureau and the Bureau of Automobile repair. I told him he did bad business and should learn how to speak to a female. Try that somewhere else and my husband will shut you up real fast. Then prices went way up and I (politely) asked why, owner said go somewhere else if I want, but cost increase is because of the price of gas. I asked if they don't need gas for a smog test, why is the cost of gas related? He said, 'ask your president'. I said, aren't we all here together, like him our not, isn't he our president? Great little "test only" smog station in Fair Oaks. Located next to the recycling spot, Mak pretty much runs the show. There is a dinky little waiting area and he was happy to have my donation of "women's magazines" -- copies of Elle, Marie Claire, etc. I noticed that others do the same... I did spy a coffee shack spitting distance away, but I already had my morning joe. Since the sun was out (Yay! Sun!) on this brisk winter day, I opted to sit on an old kitchen chair outside and thumb through a magazine. It felt kind of Sanford and Son-ish. I will be back here, no doubt. If you visit bar.ca.gov you will find their shop has multiple investigations against them. Took my car here for a smog. They made two dents in my hood during the test. They didn't tell me about it either. I talked to the owner/manager and they tried to blame me. After i contacted BAR for a negotiation. Owner didnt want to take any responsibility. Rented a uhaul from this place for my company use. I called and I was asked how many miles is be going each way, so I said I'd be going 175 miles each way and asked how much approx that would be. I was quoted $155. Obviously I should have done the math too at .89 per mile but I was driving when I called to get the quote. Well I booked it and went to pick it up. The man there was the one on the phone and was friendly enough but there was a huge language barrier. I had to have him read my ID for all my info because he wasnt able to understand me. Again he said $155. Ok no problem. Today I went to return it and it was $359.75. I said to the different clerk, that's not what I was quoted why so much. He explained it well but still, I was told a completely different thing on the phone and in person. I was quoted for 1 way. Not sure why I was even though I explained multiple times my trip. I paid the bill because the damage was done but seriously, I feel totally taken advantage of. Something is very fishy about this place and I feel like the guy did that on purpose. They didnt offer any amount of compensation what so ever. read more

This a a terrible bushiness. My truck failed smog because of a catalytic converter issue however, this place could not explain which "converter I needed in order to pass smog- to me OR ANOTHER MECHANIC. I spent hours on the phone trying to sort out this mess. Finally after going to an expert who could explain it I went back to get the truck smogged and they wouldn't honor the "re test policy" THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE. Okay so I live right next to this place and drive by here everyday. I needed a smog so I called this place up last week and the guy who answered the phone said $60 plus certificate, so almost $70 for a smog. He also mentioned that his machine was down now, but it would be fixed tomorrow. I asked him if they took competitors coupons and he repeated "competitors coupons" and said "yes". I ended up bringing my car in today @ 10am and waited 15 minutes to be greeted. The poor guy sitting next to me said he had a 9:30 appointment and hadn't been helped yet either. After finally being acknowledged by the one guy working there he told me they don't take competitors coupons. I told him that I already called last week and heard differently, he would only say his boss says we don't take competitor coupons. Needless to say I left without giving him a dime. Mak is the best in the business. Today I went to his shop for a smog test. Unfortunately, the car didn't pass the first test. After working with me to determine what was holding me back from passing, he offered to retest the car free of charge after I had made the updates. He is the nicest man and incredibly efficient and knowledgeable. I recommend coming to Mak for your smog test, I will certainly be back in two years! :) read more

Went here when another business on SAN JUAN Ave couldn't even be bothered to open their business on time. This place is reliable and their hours are good. Had our car smogged here and I was in and out in about 15-20 minutes and it ran me about $60. I've also rented UHaul trucks from them a few times and that went smooth as well. read more

I needed a Smog Test to renew my registration so I went on Yelp and found a local business with great reviews and seemed convenient. While the smog test was fast, the customer service was well BELOW par. The person doing the test threw papers in my face to sign, never asked me any questions, never said "thank you," and was not very friendly at all. He acted like I was inconveniencing him and interrupting his day...not usually the behavior you would expect from a small business competing with larger companies. When I got my car back, wires were sticking out and my "ABS" light was on. Again, when I asked about the wire, he was rude. Although the service was fast, because I was the only customer they had, I would not recommend going here for a Smog Test. My husband needs a Smog Test as well and you can be sure I will recommend him to try the Smog N'Go across the street. read more

I had a coupon for discounted price from $65 to $46. I presented the coupon and manager told me I had to PHONE for an appt. There were NO other customers at about 12:30PM. He gave me an appointment for 2PM. And stated no RETEST if needed. I returned at 1:50, and I should have been the NEXT customer. Did the paperwork, and then he sat down and started his lunch!!! There was a person who does the shop work in back. Manager did NOT start work on my car until I asked...how long is this going to be? "10 minutes"...I was the ONLY customer, and the total process was about 45 minutes". No consideration for the customer...After paying, I mentioned that if you didn't want my business, just tell me. He was dissmissive, and then as I walked out the door he said "what makes you think I need your business?" Really a rude, inconsiderate store. There are many good YELP options that take coupons to match/beat MAKs price. Use those vendors who may appreciate getting your business. I called maks smog to see if i can get a smog check done. They stated that they have 3 cars right now. I clarified with man on the phone, is that a yes or a no? He stated that I can come down but I would have to wait. I told him that I would be fine waiting. I drove all the way down there and when I showed up, the man working on a car looked annoyed with me that I showed up. I told the man that I was here to get a smog check. He said rudely, "do you see how many cars around you?" puzzled, I then said about 3-4...i dont know. Then he said what do you think? I wasn't sure what he was talking about but didn't appreciate the condescending tone. I told him that I called prior to showing up but he ignored me...so basically a waste of time to drive all the way down there and then be treated like an idiot. All he had to do was tell me on the phone that today was probably not a good day. So, therefore, I would advise anyone looking for a smog check place, please look elsewhere. Went here today to get our 19 year old truck smogged. He was quiet but knew what he was doing. Quick service and lower in price than smog n go up the street. 58$ to smog and 1 free retest. Such a good deal. Although the place is a little dinky, the service was good. I would come back here again in the future. read more
