I had nice experience at the Mala Sichuan Bistro located in Chinatown many years before. And recently I moved back to Katy so I went to this location. Really nice and pretty environment and the waiters were really friendly even though it's so busy. I ordered three dishes which are Katy only. I like chicken wings and the spicy lamb ribs. And, the bottom line, the avocado salad was really amazing! I didn't expect too much about a cold dish and just ordered it to balance the meat. However when I tasted it I was surprised by the broadly flavor. It was better to eat with rice. With the sauce I can eat 5 bowls of rice hahahahaha. read more

Lovely decor Great service Delicious food I highly recommend trying the barley and lemon water. It was really delightful and a Katy exclusive item at the moment. I dont think this location has perfectly replicated the recipes at Mala in Chinatown yet. Maybe it was just a normal batch variance or they're developing their own recipes. So I'm a big fan of the original Mala Sichuan and its Chef, James Beard Award nominee, Jianyun Ye. The food there is, well, AWARD WINNING after all (even if only a runner up in the '17 James Beard process). Is this food every bit as good as that which comes from Ye's hand? No, honestly it is not. Yet it is STILL 5 star worthy food. Let me explain a bit why... Americans tend to think of fried rice as a crispy, semi-greasy, heavy concoction. Ye's fried rice recipe results is a fluffy, flavorful, light dish not requiring any soy or addition. It's perfection on a plate. Like spice? Try the spicy version for added levels of flavor, of texture - without burning your tongue to bits. Bacon, cured and candied almost. Cooled and wrapped in cucumber. Coddled in sauce...this is the dish you never, EVER, knew you needed. Simple staples - kung pao or Mongolian beef - take on new levels of flavor and intensity while still somehow remaining simple, remaining "pure" in a sense. I'm not sure why you're still reading this. We tried this place for a late lunch. Decor is pretty cool. They were not too busy around 245 pm. We ordered the chicken soup and DanDan noodles.for an appetizer. A minute later we were told the kitchen closes at 3 pm until 5pm. Those are not the.hours on their web page. Nonetheless, we ordered the spicy crispy chicken. Both dishes were.fantastic and provided the signature numbing feeling from the spices. They have a huge menu with a great variety. We will return soon to try other dishes. The basil green beans with eggplant was precooked. Everything was very mushy and I really don't care for mushy food. I wanted a chicken dish but not one dish has white meat chicken it. All chicken dishes are made with dark meat. Guess they are trying to save a buck. It's hard to communicate with servers wearing masks as well. Beautiful ambiance with additional two rooms for larger groups (8-10) which we have used frequently. EVERYONE we take adores their food including the teenagers/college agers who even go crazy over their vegetable dishes!! Some of our favorite dishes are the dumplings in spicy oil, salt & pepper pork riblets, eggplant with basil, and double fried vegetables. And their Mongolian Beef is the BEST!! Everyone eats it up so we never get to have it for leftovers, but that's because it's so delicious. They also have a hazelnut layered torte that is to die for and rich enough to split with a friend. Im using one star rating because zero is not a choice. This review is about the new location in Katy. I would like the owners to understand that many families living in Katy have children, many of them, children who suffer from food allergies. We recently visited the location in Katy, as we try to eat our meals as a family, and we were not sure the restaurant could accommodate our daughter's needs, we had food for her to eat. Our daughter is 3yo and has food allergies and is particular about what she eats. We bring her own food to just about everywhere we go. Unfortunately, we were asked to put away our daughter's food, otherwise, we could not stay. I tried to explain to the manager our situation and his reply was: "sorry, but the owners don't like that." I was forced to try and explain to my toddler why we had to put away the food she was about to eat and leave. Never again will you have our business. read more
