l attempted to order food from this restaurant while visiting home for the holidays. I don't speak Spanish well and asked to speak with someone that speaks English to ask a question about an order I was attempting to make in Door Dash. I wanted white rice with black beans that have the bean sauce not rice and beans mixed together; the app menu doesn't give you this option. I called and asked for someone that spoke English. I was told to hold on. I waited on hold for 4 minutes and then THEY HUNG UP ON ME!!! I thought it was a mistake so I called back a few times THEY PICKED UP DIDNT SAY HELLO AND HUNG UP ON ME 3 TIMES!!! I guess they have caller ID and saw it was me calling multiple times AND KEPT HANGING UP ON ME and eventually didn't pick up. DISCRIMINATION AT ITS FINEST!!!! I'm from Miami and speak a little Spanish but couldn't get through this particular conversation. I think it's terrible to be denied the opportunity to order delicious Cuban food while I'm visiting home for the holidays because I CANT SPEAK SPANISH!! I love this place. It's small and quaint with a great Latin feel. So naturally I picked it for my birthday. We were a table of 10 people and our server was phenomenal. He made sure everything was great and offered us some drinks. I love the atmosphere here because it's more intimate. My family and friends could all enjoy delicious food without having to scream over one another. It's intimate space that allows for good conversation and good times. I normally go for lunch and have one of their sandwiches with yuca frita because their mojo and garlic sauces are to die for. But for my birthday dinner I tried their pulled pork over a guava sauce, along with rice and sweet plantains. The pork was filled with flavor and combining it with the sweet guava sauce was new to me but I loved it! I would definitely recommend this plate. Also the portions are dramatized like most Cuban places so I didn't feel terrible finishing my entire plate. Hahah The singing of happy birthday was by far my favorite part. I don't see this place open much longer. Staff is rude and the food is worse. 25 minutes before we get our drinks and when we did there was one ice cube in each cup. We asked for more ice and she said the ice machine was broken but magically came back with the cups filled with ice. Food came out before Soups and appetizers. The food was cold , stale, and bland. Very disappointed overall! No greeting when you come in just awkward look. I had to ask if I sit myself or not. Service VERY slow and restaurant only had one party who was just waiting for check. I had friends from out of town want to have Cuban food so I took them to Malanga Cuban Cafe. My friends had a couple of pork dishes that they liked very much but I ordered the Marinated Cuban Pork Chunks and the pork was dry and inedible. I realize sometimes that things do not go right in a kitchen so I told the server and she said that it did look dry. I then requested that this entree be taken off the bill because I was not going to eat it and she said she would have to ask the cook/manager if she could take it off the bill. When the server came back to the table she said the best that she could do is take off $1.80 off an $18.00 entree that I did not eat. I asked to speak to the manager but she told me he was too busy. It is unacceptable for any manager of a restaurant to hide in the kitchen and not greet a guest with an issue and deliver a proper solution. I find the response from the server and manager an insult as our bill was $65.00 minus $1.80 discount. Not only was I charged for an entree I didn't eat but the server never offered an alternative or a dessert or anything but $1.80 discount! I will never go back to this restaurant again as providing guest service seems to be a foreign concept and after reading several similar reviews it would seem that this is how they operate rather than it just being an exception. read more

I have driven past this place time and time again and have always been curious about it. Then, almost as if fate was telling me to try it I stumbled upon a coupon for it, and figured why not? I parked up in the lot in front of the restaurant, it looks rather quaint and petite on the outside but it is rather spacious and homie once you step inside. The doors are decorated with chalk drawings and specials written on the outside which gives it a modern feel. The inside has pictures and decorations that seem like they come from a long ago Cuba. The water comes served in Mason jars which I thought was a nice touch. I ordered the Cuban nachos as an appetizer. All I can say is, wow... Those nachos were the best I've ever had and I've had a lot of nachos. Instead of chips, they use tostones, which is a type of fried plantain, they then cover the tostones with cheese, pico de gallo, chicken, and sour cream for a mouth popping experience. I still think about them today. For my entree I chose the churrasco along with a side of white rice and black beans. The churrasco was cooked to perfection. The rice and beans were like you would have at any Cuban restaurant but still very good and flavorful. It can be a little pricey, about $15-$20 a plate, but definitely well worth it. read more

Wow! Malanga Cafe really brought back memories of my childhood. The whole decor screams Cuba. There is even a restaurant in Havana called La Bodeguita del Medio which traditionally encourages patrons to write their names on the walls as a permanent record of their visit. This place seems to have the same tradition. Moving to what matters the most...the food!! We decided to start off with an appetizer. Even though we were not very hungry we were seduced by the many choices available so we decided to try a few things. Our Cuban Nacho appetizer was a creative Cuban version of a Nacho but it was ingeniously layered on a bed of tostones. What else can you ask for? Delicious shredded pork plus tostones and cheese...match made in Heaven. My fiancé decided to follow the multiple positive reviews mentioning the famous Pan con Lechon and after trying it myself I must say that their claim about it being the best Pan con Lechon in Miami may just be true. It was a massive sandwich and the meat was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection, tender, juicy and just mouth watering. At the end the only words that came out of his mouth were: " it wasn't big enough!" I was was very surprised to hear that since when the sandwich first arrived at the table he said: "what's this monstrosity?" I guess that says it all. My vaca Frita was also perfectly cooked and I really enjoyed but this time the award for best food selection goes to my fiancé. His food was a great choice. What else can be said about this place? Service was excellent and I can't wait to go back which saddens me deeply since my healthy life style does not approve of such abuse on a regular basis. Dear Malanga Cafe, 2 words for you: Food Poisoning. :( I had such high expectations, but alas, they were quickly diminished. My love and I came in on a Saturday evening, the day before we left the country. Wanting to enjoy a last Miami meal before departing, we figured Malanga's was the way to go, not to mention that you are in our neighborhood. The place was kinda packed, but you were able to arrange some seating for us at a center table. First thing I noticed was the wall with a wall paper of Cuban bad words and dirty expressions. While it was comical, it was totally inappropriate for the family with the 2 kids sitting nearby us, and I can only imagine the conversation at that table: "Daddy, what does 'coño' mean?"... When our bread arrived it had a couple of strands of long, dark hair in it. I was a little taken aback, but was not going to let that ruin my meal. I quietly and politely flagged someone down, advised them, and had our bread basket replaced... OK, no harm, no foul. We placed our orders and waited patiently for our food. My love opted for a chicken vaca frita, which is shredded chicken, (I know pork is your thing, but we just weren't in the mood) and I opted for a steak sandwich. The menu states that the steak sandwich comes with mayo, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and the small picnik fries. All I asked for was no lettuce or tomatoes and to please add cheese. Instead, I got bread, steak and cheese, no mayo, no fries, no flavor. Sadly, the worst pan con bistec I've ever had... My love's chicken tasted "interesting" from the start, and I guess that should have been a sign. But he eats anything and he continued to eat it. It came with some sort of a mango sauce (chicken and mango?) and tostones, which are flattened, fried bananas... Everything was ok immediately upon leaving the restaurant and getting home... Legit !!! My mother and father had been telling me for a few weeks now to try " Malanga Café " He had seen some advertising on TV and thought the food looked delicious. Being hispanic and having a mother who whips up authentic cuban food we judge restaurant's that specialize in Cuban Cuisine very harshly. Growing up it's pretty much all I ate. Looking back it was like eating out everyday. Therefore, now being at the age where your the one treating your parents and taking them out to eat to locations that specialize in the very food they grew up on and make on a daily basis, you can image they have quite a lot to say about the food and how it compares to what they cook and they grew up with. It was quite a drive for us coming from North Miami Dade County in Miami Lakes, FL but reflecting back it was quite worth the drive. My in-laws were in town and I thought it was quite the opportunity to give this a shot since there from Gainesville, FL and there is a lack of hispanic restaurant's in the city. I had called ahead for table and I arrived very late, I want to say maybe 30 min or more but the hostess was still able to get us a table for all of us. The restaurant it self is on the smaller side but there is outdoor seating and is very cozy, the decor makes it seem larger. There are photo's of famous cuban artist and actors all over the wall. In addition to hispanic decor and music instruments. One of my favorite sections of the restaurant was the wall when you walking in that has several cuban slang sayings written on the wall. It was quite nice. We were fortunate to have are order taken by one of the owners of the restaurant. It was nice to see a business man taking orders and bringing out food with the rest of the staff, very refreshing the hospitality and customer service they provided. We started of with and ordered the following: Malanga Fritters: They were fried to perfection, you can tell the oil was fresh since it had good color. They were steaming hit and were paired with what tasted like a guava sauce under a garlic with mayo dressing. This paired very well. It was very similar to conch fritters but with a great malanga taste. They had a small kick to them and were very delicious. Crema de Malanga: This was very good. Growing up this was something I had quite often and it was very well made. I like mine a little more salty so I added some salt to it. However, you if don't like salty food, it was just right. Very creamy and rich in flavor and had a touch of parmesan cheese on top. Great Soup El Santiaguero: WOW WOW WOW... This was the kitchen sink. It consist of red beans, white rice, small chunks or pork, fried sweet plantains with onions, tomato. It's served in a tortilla shell with everything on top. Yes everything on top, with a little umbrella for decor. Pretty much telling you the rain came down!!! LOL - This is a lot of food. I can eat and I didn't finish it, I can tell you it was very good. The beans had very good seasoning and the rice was soft and flacky. The pork was tender and soft with marinade and amazing flavor, those sweet plantains made everything go together very good. Just like at home. Now if your used to having your food in separate plates you might find this odd because it's literally all together, but I can tell you it taste great !!! Bistec de Cerdo: Amazing, very good flavor, and cooked perfectly. It had a smoky flavor and was quite big to be honest in size. This was paired with congri which is like moro and fried tostones. All delicious! It came with a cup of guava sauce which was tasty and fried onions as well. Very good dish! We all ordered more food, but this is what I tasted. Again I was impressed with everything I tried can this could be one of the best places I have been for cuban food. They bring your bill in a cigar box which is very creative and native to all cubans. I won't give them 2 stars because it wasn't terrible but I have definitely experienced better Frituras de Malanga. They were a bit bland, didn't have the chopped onions I'm used to having them with and they didn't offer any garlic juice with them. My friend and I also tried the 'Cuban Nachos' which were big tostones topped with chicken and chopped tomatoes and other goodies. They were pretty good and would have them again. I went to Malanga Cuban Cafe today. What a disappointment! I ordered the mahi mahi filet, white rice and red beans. I don't know which was worse! The fish filet was served in small pieces and tasted oily. The white rice was not fresh and the beans were watery with no consistency. The red beans had no potatoes, chorizo, etc. We were then told that there was tres leches for dessert and later told there was no more. I would definitely not recommend it to anyone. What a shame! The churrasso was tasteless and they didn't even have the chimichuri sauce to disguise the funk of the meat.. The boiled yucca had an old oil taste (like they used old reused oil from frying something). The rice tastes old and hard not fresh at all.. The black beans were watery and tasteless. The best thing was my Pinot Grigo drink and my daughter's Mango shake. The manager noticed me not eating the food and I told her I couldn't eat it it was so gross.. She only charged me for our drinks... I don't know because it was late (700p on a Thursday) and we got the leftovers but I can't believe I was served this horrible old food.. Taco Bell here I come!!! It pains me to give such a review for a small mom & pop restaurant right in my neighborhood, but the food was inedible. All of us ordered the palomilla steak and they were so salty, we sent them back. When I say salty, I mean like the cook dumped a salt lick on them. We were the only people in the restaurant at the time so it couldn't have been because the chef was in the weeds and was just in a hurry. This was our second time back and we were not that impressed, but thought maybe it was an off night and they deserved a second chance. This was my first visit to Malanga Cafe. I had driven by there several times and seen the large sign boasting that they have the best pan con lechon in the world. I purchased a Living Social deal which gave me $25 to use at the cafe and so I went with a co-worker for lunch. For a plus, the place has ample parking and is located right off US-1. The decor inside is cute, quaint and had typical Cuban familiarity to it. I have a feeling that it is quite nice in the evening. We were immediately sat but did not get our orders taken for some time. We sat there agonizing as plate by plate passed by us smelling delicious. A few ladies near us seemed to be having a sampler platter with tamale, croquettas and yuca rellenas, all which looked delicious. And the platter of palomilla that passed us by almost got my co-worker out of her chair. The last plus was that the bill comes in a Cuban cigar box. They really stick to the theme throughout your dining experience. For the minus, the food we ate was nothing to write home about. The crema de malanga soup was under seasoned and had cheese which is not typical of that soup. While creamy it lacked the stew like features that make a soup of malanga so good. With the name of the restaurant containing malanga I expected more. Now onto the world's best pan con lechon. Well this fell extremely flat. I would venture to say it was the worst pan con lechon I have ever had. The bread was hard, the meat had no seasoning and was DRY like toast. The typical lechon contains a sweet garlicy mojo sauce. There was no liquid on this sandwich. We had to ask the waitress to bring us some and even after slopping the entire sauce dish into it, it remained dry and tasteless. I didn't even finish the half of my sandwich that was left. Before completely writing this place off, I will return to Malanga Cafe and give some other dishes a try but will steer clear of the malanaga and pan con lechon. Very disappointing... I have been here on multiple occasions and the food has been great; however, went on a Tuesday night with my husband, but the food was not very appealing. We were never offered bread and butter as in most Cuban restaurants. The chicken vaca frita tasted old and my plate the Santiaguero did not bring any diced tomatoes. The waitress took forever to come back to our table, by that time I was full and mentioned to her the missing tomatoes, so she offered to bring a tiny round container with two microscopic pieces of tomato and onion. As a Cuban-American to find place named Malanga it evoques the same amount of memories as Madeleines did to Marcel Proust. I was looking for truly home cooking hungry for smells and taste of my early childhood years. To find the smell of incense was disorienting to say the least. We sat down and began absorbing the ambiance, sort of 70's Miami, photos of John Secada, Celia Cruz, béisbol players and Cuban Frases adorning the walls. I ordered the Bistec of Palomilla with pinto beans and rice. My sister order another palomilla with French Fríes. The meal came lukewarm, the flavor of the meat frankly boring, the potaje please not even a taste of calabaza or chorizo to main staples for Cuban potajes. Maybe it was a bad day.
