When I got to location there is a big sign informing that the market had been relocated 121 on Malcom X blvd and the listed location was having construction work being done. The energy in this location is incredible. I have heard about this location and glad finally got the chance to visit it on a trip to Harlem. As you walk by each vendor they are so welcoming, friendly and no pressuring to buy buy buy (in my experience). The vibrant colors of the different bags, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, clothing, fabrics. Many handcrafted pieces and some vendors had oils, incense and the different butters to name a few, shea and mango. The items are priced accordingly and most venders did tap to pay, Zelle and or cash. Good to know as someone may not always have cash on them. read more

The Harlem Market is a large place where vendors sell all kinds of authentic African items such as clothing, jewerly, household items, mud blankets, oils, fabric etc. At the market, each vendor has their own section and they're able and willing to negotiate the cost of their items. I purchased a cool African print skirt and a African print fan and I was able to get what he called the sister discount! If you have an interest in items of the motherland come visit the Harlem Market. They also have little pop up shops across Harlem but nothing compares to the original Malcolm Shabazz. read more

Located in the center of Le Petit Sénégal, do come here for some very nice handmade leather trinkets and your typical beads and necklaces and everything else Afrocentric, typically, directly imported from places such as Mali, Senegal, and Burkina and Faso to name a few. One can also find a good deal on some very nice Sterling silver pieces at very reasonable and negotiable prices. The wax fabrics are also very high quality for those of us who are into creating our own garments. However, if you're just looking for the finished products to sport around town and to festivals then one can definitely find no shortage of shirts dashikis, dresses, suits, etc. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a "look-see." If you're looking for gifts from the Motherland, then you must make the journey here to at least browse the numerous vendor selections. read more

Harlem African Market! This is THE place to get all your African supplies. They have everything that you'll ever need, from Cairo to the Cape. This is a flea market set up in a permanent place right in the heart of Harlem. They have lots of stalls for individual, independent vendors selling a wide variety of African supplies. This is a good place to get stocked up in African clothing, they have t-shirts with Nelson Mandela, dashikis, clothes with the African big game animals on them, and of course those huge cloth hats for women. They also have every African beauty product you can think of, from makeup to cologne to herbs and spices to make you smell pretty. My favorite stuff is the African artwork and furniture. Need a bust of a Nubian princess? They have more models available than anyone else. They've got lots of African masks to hang up or wear to fool your neighbors. The prices here seem to be mostly negotiable. There are restrooms available. Personally, I've been to many markets in Africa, and this is one of the best African flea markets I've ever seen. All parts of Africa are represented here, east to west, north to south. read more

On a quest to start exploring more neighborhoods in the city, I made the (long) walk to Harlem from my UES apartment over the weekend and stumbled upon the Malcolm Shabazz Market. I have since learned my lesson that Sunday is really not the day to go if you want to experience the real hustle and bustle of it- since the area is relatively religious and thus most locals were at church however I still got a nice introduction. There are a bunch of vendors set up, all selling similar things mainly from African countries- beautiful fabrics, traditional clothing, leather goods (shoes, wallets, purses), jewelry, African shea butter & black soap, wooden masks and bowls, etc. The best part- everything is super cheap and you can haggle with them as well. I got a handmade gold metal bracelet from Gambia for $5, and a wooden decorated centerpiece from Kenya for $12. The vendors are all very nice, I had a nice conversation with a man from Gambia who taught me a few words in Mandinka ... which I have all since forgotten but he was still very pleasant to talk to! I was hoping there would be food stalls set up but no such luck :( I look forward to a Saturday when I have some time to go back and see what it's like when it's a bit busier. read more

I came here around 3PM on a Thursday afternoon. Just happened upon it while walking Harlem. Pretty cool place and fun people working there who will try to talk you into a deal with whatever you may be looking at or touch. Fun jewelry, reasonably priced, and nice, almost too nice people who work there. Had a fun convo with a guy who had three wives and was extending an offer to me to be his fourth wife! I purchased a backpack from them when they vendored at the BAM bazaar in Brooklyn in May 2022. I later discovered that the zipper was defective in two places, and the plastic piece from the arm strap broke upon first wearing it which made it impossible to wear as a backpack. I paid them cash and they never offered a receipt, and I didn't think to ask for one. I tried to return it to them when they were vendors at the African Arts Festival in July 2022. At first the vendor admitted to selling the bag to me for $30, but after I showed him the defective zipper, he denied selling me the bag. Buyer beware. Always get a receipt so you can hold businesses accountable! read more

I stopped in at the Harlem Market on the recommendation from a good friend. She had sent pictures and I saw some of clothes she got from her recent trip in July. Since we were staying only a few short blocks away it was a given to stop. It is hard to review as a previous reviewer stated there are independent shops and the majority are very nice and the price they quote isn't the final price. I originally in the market for earrings and a dashiki and I looked at many stands and tried on a dashiki but realized what I wanted was a skirt or two. What my friend said was true, no price is ever final most shop owners are willing to deal. I found some items on the first day but we went back to get some fabric for a friend. The fabric was beautiful, authentic and much less a yard than a fabric store I planned on going to. There is so much to see and buy at the market. You;ll find pretty much the same merchandise at many especially earrings but some are more willing to deal than others. If you are visiting NYC and spending anytime in Harlem you have to stop buy. read more

So this place really does deserve a disclaimer... **Disclaimer** We went here on a sunday as a little outing, but in retrospec we should have gone on any day expect for sunday because so much of the harlem community is religious and were in church instead of out and about at this market, so maybe my review would be more positive had we gone on a different day. Now that that is over, we went here because my map book said it was a great market to check out, and it seems like it would have been if it had been open!! There were only maybe about 6 vendors open in this whole market most of which were selling really cheap Harlem or NYC t shirts which gave Chinatown a run for its money but these were not the types of souvenirs I was hoping for. Finally we came across one of the few stores that was open and I was able to buy these beautiful hand carved eggs with scenes and animals from kenya on them for a pretty cheap price. My boyfriend was able to get a thinking man statue that was hand carved the day before by an artist there and since my boyfriend works at a "think tank" he was pretty pumped ha ha. He thought he was clever heh But other than that...we had envisioned african food or soul food or something like that and hardly any of the stores were open....I was so excited to come into harlem with all of the history and culture it has and I really don't think this market did it justice at all........ =-( read more

Cons: The pressure to buy from the vendors can be a little intense. Balance: PROS BOTTOM LINE: Tell me where else in America you can find a year-round African mercantile market. That's the bottom line, and it's something that any reviewer who gives less than 4 stars is clearly failing to appreciate. read more

If you want to know where all those NYC street vendors selling African sculpture and instruments, cool jewelry and bags, and various other miscellaneous items come from... look no further. This is the big papa of all of those little jewels, complete with big time haggling and the occasional pushy seller hawking their wares. Strolling through with $10 to burn can lead to a great new purchase, or two. Some vendors respond well to haggling, some are clearly offended when you barter as hard as they sell. But that's why God gave us feet, to walk away. Be sure to do a full loop before buying something, there are two main aisles separating 30ish booths, and I've often made a purchase that I later saw on another table with a twist or color or condition I envied. Most of the vendors order from the same Really Big Papa I'm sure - and the difference is made in the upkeep of their stall and goods. I love jewelry with real personality for real deals that I get compliments on like few other pieces I've had. After your trip, stop at the fish market for some fresh fish for dinner, or pop over to Native on Lenox at 118th for a drink and bite to eat. read more

I'm an earring fanatic and I purchased 6 pairs from the market. The vendors carry a variety of items such as jewelry, attire, bags, etc with most items made by hand. Most vendors are willing to negotiate. The market is pretty clean and orderly. There are located in Harlem near the 2 & 3 train. This market has no parallels to anything else in NYC. WHile many of the African carvings are, in fact, made on site, they're reminiscent of the "real thing" and can make nice decorations as long as you realize it's tourist material, not authentic sculpture used in rituals. The earrings are $5 and you can bargain for almost anything else. THere are great Cameroonian baskets and other authentic items if you look around. This place started as an incubator for small businesses in Harlem, with the idea that vendors would eventually rent their own storefronts. But as rents have risen, many remain here, and I think that's a good thing, because it's dense with choices. THe critic who lamented the lack of African food didn't do his/her homework. One block west of the market is a stretch of African eateries on 116th Street - going all the way to Frederick Douglass Boulevard. A little homework would have yielded the addresses of many Senegalese, Guinean, Malian and other food places in Harlem. read more

The market overall is a cool place. Just sort of a consolidated version of all the street tables you see down 125th. There are a lot more clothing places and such though. The people there were all nice. It's hard to review though because they're all independent from each other but as far as I could tell all of them should get a high rating. My understanding is that the market is open 7 days a week, but I'm not sure whether the same vendors are there throughout the week. The selection consists primarily of clothes (mostly African), jewelry, shea butter (I bought a large tub from Ghana for $5), black soap and incense. A great place to visit on an NYC trip. The market is a bountiful and friendly place, chock-full of African crafts and some great buys not made in Africa but reflecting the spirit and aesthetics of the vendors. We met folks from Senegal, Rwanda, Ghana, to name just a few countries. Goods included a vast array of garments for women and men, jewelry, hats, belts, fans, masks, musical instruments and decorative house ware, beauty supplies. Vendors were friendly and respectful. A great part of the fun was just soaking up the ambiance: peaceful banter among beautifully-attired sellers, craftsmen and women absorbed in their work, teenagers engaged in a cheerful game of cards over a folding table. By world open-air market standards, the place is supremely orderly, immaculately clean, and exceptionally polite. Occasionally a vendor will encourage you to check out his or her wares. When we hesitated over an item, often we were offered a reduction without having to utter a word. The only gap between this little gem and sheer perfection is caused by the absence of food vendors. A good market, in its own interest as well as that of the shoppers, will offer a few nooks to duck into for refreshment. We wish we had had that excuse to sit and bask in the loveliness of the place just a little bit longer, even once we were done with shopping. read more
