This is one of my favorite places to visit in Harlem! I became familiar a few years ago because my family lived right around the corner. The owners are really cool and carefully curate their offerings. NiLu is one of the few places I venture out to visit alone because I enjoy taking my time checking out the products. They offer artworks, beautiful coffee table books, premium Harlem candles, puzzles, journals, board games, fragrances, greeting cards, and so much more that celebrate the culture. Super cute shop that has everything from candles to jewelry. I decided to visit the shop for the first time this weekend and was greeted by some vendors outdoor. I am very ashamed to say I have been living in Harlem for over 5 years, and I have never visited NiLu. I visited on a Saturday afternoon, and they literally had something for everyone in my entire family. This is a family and Black-owned business, and everyone was so NICE and INFORMATIVE! My husband received a gift card to NiLu beginning of the month and opted to purchase the Cosmo Champagne Glass set. Unfortunately, both glasses were received broken (see attached photos). I emailed communitymanager@shopnilu.com and got a response a couple days later apologizing and would send me another set. Fast forward to last week when we received the new set, unfortunately (again) only glass was broken. I reached out again (with photos). I had followed up again on the 21st with no response. I simply asked for a credit of our gift card to use towards something else. Today is the 26th and still haven't heard from anyone. While the glasses are super cute, it is a bummer that I did not get the product I liked to simply being ignored. Bummer. read more

Or you may just be stared at like I was on both occasions. You may be asked to hand sanitize (like I was) while others are allowed to waltz in. The book section is my favorite as there are many books with pictures about the history of Harlem, African American history, and women's rights. Take a stroll in here when you're bored! I saw this shop on the news one morning. Out of curiosity, I scanned their website and found myself enthralled by all the unique items. I bought some Christmas gifts. When they came, each item was carefully wrapped in tissue and bubble wrap. One item was a candle and I had been nervous about breakage. I shouldn't have thought twice because it was wrapped so meticulously, it made it to Texas in one piece. Everything was perfect and I can't wait to share my finds. read more

Nice little shop. They have a fun selection of different gifts. They carry NYC themed merchandise and other items made in NY. Their stuff includes greeting cards, kitchen items, toys, games, jewelry, chocolates, etc. The only reason I give 4-stars is instead of 5-stars is because there are a few too many Brooklyn items mixed in. Unfortunately, it seems like nobody in the neighborhood knows this little gem has arrived. Suggestion to business: do some postcard advertising to your neighbors so we know you are here! Also, maybe need a street easel hyping your products to pull in the tourists. read more

I always eat at the restaurant next door. As I waited for my takeout, I decided to head inside NiLu First off, it smells absolutely wonderful inside ! I'm going back next week to purchase the oil / glass vase / wicker thing that made the place smell so good. They have a nice variety of different & unique gifts. I bought Thank You cards and a small tote bag. Both were adorable. This is such a nice addition to the neighborhood ESPECIALLY since it's a black owned business. Went in late May to get a unique last minute gift for a friend I was visiting in Asia. I went into the shop and I was never greeted, despite there being a party or some kind of happy hour going on that Saturday. No explanation of what the event was. No drink offered. Oh well. Nice items here and there, but a lot was overpriced. A magnet for $5, sheesh! I wasn't impressed with the customer service. When I went to the counter to price check the magnet, the lady at the counter wasn't warm at all. I didn't feel like they wanted any business that day, so I left. Good day and good luck. read more
