Wow, the biggest surprise was the huge flavors and refined meals we experienced here. I want to first start with the service! Excellent!!! Eliza was our service specialist and was wonderful. We started our meal with very good Crab Spring Rolls. Followed by a nice salad. She had the Mo's "All Crab" Crab Cakes and mashed potatoes and green beans with a siracha aioli and as advertised were made with just backfin and love, they were so good! I had the Crispy 1/2 duck with mashed potatoes and green beans and a rasberry-balsamic reduction. Very complex flavor and so unexpected for a restaraunt so off the beaten path. We topped it off with a slice of Smith Island Cake with Cream Cheese Icing with rasberry drizzle! This is in an out of the way place (Onacock, Va), but well worth the trip. What an incredible experience. We reserved a table for 7, they had plenty of room for us given the COVID circumstances. The menu was fantastic. I got the crab cakes ... highly recommend. We also got the crab bread and crab rolls which were out of this world. Drink menu was great too. After dinner we sat outside and listened to live music on a Friday night. Stopped in for a quick bite early in the evening. My partner and I were seated quickly. We promptly had our drink order taken. Drinks were so-so, I got the mallards mule and he got the sting-rae, a tad too sour. However, the food was DELISH!! Had the braised pork which was perfectly seasoned and paired nicely with the bed of sweet biscuits. We then got the crab flatbread which was crispy and rich! We had a great meal at this restaurant tonight! The food was amazing and the service was spectacular. We had a great mix of surf and turf. Clams with jalapeño broth and perfect crab cakes with a smoked pork sandwich which was out of this world! Our server was attentive and friendly. The view is ridiculous - complete with herons and and the tug moving a giant boat just before dark made the evening complete. We opted for creme brûlée and hot brownie for dessert. Amazing view at sunset over the water. The staff is always attentive and friendly. Their food takes a classic and adds a twist that works. Their crab bread needs to be named something a little fancier. Yes, it is lump crabmeat cheese and spices on flatbread but it has a more complex and delicious flavor than its name. The braised pork comes over sweet potato biscuits that is another strange pairing that works well. A great place to grab a meal or just an app and something from the bar. read more

AWESOME! I don't really need to say more, but Yelp doesn't seem to care for one word reviews. We are here two nights in a row. Yup, it was THAT good! First night, I had the scallops over pimento cheese grits, with a sriratcha sauce. WOW! Husband had the meatloaf. It was awesome, too! Second night, I was hoping they still had scallops, but they had sold out. Instead, I got he crab cake, and I wasn't disappointed. It was crab, little to no filler! As a bonus, they have a quaint outdoor area and sometimes have live music.....by the chef!! Between sets, the chef visited tables and spoke to the diners. What a great way to show customer service! This place is right next to the town wharf, so if you are staying at the marina, you are in luck! We will be back often! read more

Without sounding like a stuffed shirt, the word that comes to mind is "typical". It seems every quaint walking town has one of these; a tad more expensive than you thought it should be but you didn't fall off of the chair when you got the check, they're not sure of their identity, paper napkins and dishes that present like fine dining with meticulous garnishes etc. Everyone liked their chosen dish, spring rolls, tomato soup, a crab cake (which gets 5 stars), broiled flounder, and I forgot what my wife had, but she liked it, didn't finish it, which is unusual, but she liked it. A sandwich it was. Next time I'll stick to the Sage diner on 13 and then go take in some free ambiance afterward, it wasn't worth $180. I'm glad we're not drinkers, I got away cheap. read more

Mallard's is one of my favorite restaurants on the entire bay because of their vibe and consistantly good food & drink. For ambiance Mallard's is part restaurant, part historical building, part museum, and part outdoor lounge, with a dock/patio/courtyard that stretches out along the wharf, and a daiquiri is still not a lost art. Add to this excellent setting a menu featuring standard Chesapeake fare with panache such as a perfectly cooked crabcake taken up a notch, by serving it with a romulade and plum sauce on the side, with a bed of garlic mash potatoes and fresh asparagus. Or take their steamed clams, that would be outstanding on their own with some drawn butter, but instead are served in a garlic jalapeño broth. Finally, there is the service and attitude of the staff, which is focused on making your stay enjoyable. Need I say more? read more

Stopped in here for a quick bite and some out of the car time on a long road trip with the family. Service was ok, seems like we got a pretty green waitress. We ordered Johnny Mo's chicken. It was terrible. We figured it would be chicken tenders (like on most bar menus) but what we got was something akin to Perdue/Tyson chicken fingers, the kind you buy for your kids that don't even have the same texture as fresh chicken. This was the all around best restaurant my wife and I have visited in years! Quaint atmosphere of the Onancock Wharf, wonderful selection of unique dishes and friendly people. Our server Hannah was on top of every detail from the moment we sat down! The owner was even helping with fresh ground pepper for your salad and whisking away empty plates! The bartender makes a serious Old Fashioned and my wife enjoyed an Old Fashioned Crush, both with Makers Mark! My wife had a Cajun Chicken and Sausage Combo with just the right spice! A group came in after us and were instantly served, so we got up and left. The service provided by Katie and Kerry was on point and attentative. The food was fresh fast hot and delicious. The outside deck area was fun and atmospheric for a couple looking over the water and sunset. Prices were expected for the dishes between 14 and 25 with some lower end options as well. We drove from western New Jersey to Corolla, North Carolina, in late June, 2019, and decided to stop for dinner at an Eastern Shore [Virginia] restaurant, insomuch as we had lived on the Eastern Shore for a number of years, almost forty years ago. We decided to stop for dinner at a Shore restaurant, based upon "Yelp" reviews/ratings, and selected MALLARDS AT THE WHARF. My wife called and made an approximated-time reservation, arriving virtually on time, in the lovely, quaint town of Onancock. We were seated outside, facing the cove and beautiful water scene, immediately in front of us. Our server, "Cheyenne", was immediately there to provide us an introduction to what would be a wonderful dining experience, and when discovering that my wife has a very severe garlic allergy, actually had the chef, "Johnny" come to our table to provide absolute certainty that whatever my wife was to eat would be garlic free. Our wine was soon delivered to us, and as well, warm bread and butter, and then subsequently our perfectly cooked dinner entree's were brought to us, which we fully enjoyed. The restaurant's owner "John" came by twice to make absolutely certain that we were very pleased with our entire dining experience. Our server Cheyenne was exceptional in evidencing attentive care, and all members of the staff made us feel welcome and even appreciated.
