Mediocre at best. The meaty pork ribs looked so good but were bland with little smoky flavor. Excellent experience after a cross country meet yesterday in Navasota. All Staff were extremely kind and helpful even with our big group of 5 kids. Food was amazing. This BBQ unfortunately is an embarrassment to Texas BBQ. Went in for lunch today, ordered a 3 meat plate, brisket, ribs and sausage. The brisket was basically a roasted piece of meat, ribs had so much caramelized sauce on top it was hard and not able to bite through, had to peel that off to eat the rib meat below. The sausage casing was so tough it was difficult to chew. The sides were twice baked potatoes that were served barely warm as the shredded cheese on top was not even melted. The other side was Cole slaw that had a flavor of cabbage that had an odd flavor. The onions we got on the side had a piece that had decay on it. I love good Texan BBQ and was quick to pull in while traveling through for lunch. Arrived a little after one and walked in to what appeared to be your typical BBQ set up. The menu is limited and unclear and the portion sizes disappointing. The slice brisket was good and moist and the sausage reasonably tasty but that was as good as it got. Even though it was just one, the sides had the look of old, dried out and scrape the side of the metal to get a serving one typically finds at 3 in the afternoon. Unlike many places, the sides were self serve in a steam table which is remarkably questionable in the days of COVID. Several of the options were gone but the trays not refilled for the new customers. BBQ sauce did not accompany the meat nor were you told it awaited you in a squeeze bottle on your table. The chopped beef was more of a sopped beef, precut and soaked in a tray of sauce rather than chopped fresh for the diner and sauced at their option. This is not one of the better Texas options. This was not a one time thing I come here about once a month - the food is good. 2. After about 5 visits, this is what I can say: A classic BBQ house setup. You'll be hearded down a wall and past a glass display to pick out your "viddles", then slide your tray down to pay. There is a salad bar and sides bar, BUT you have to tell them at checkout that you want to add a salad so they can charge you for it. I'm a fan of their CORNBREAD CASSEROLE, and not everyone makes or sells that. They do sell beer. They bathroom has always been clean when I've visited. They do have TVs to watch sports or news. I'd give the ribs a 7 out of 10. The brisket a 8 out of 10. The sausage a 8 out of 10. And I haven't tried their other meats yet. I can always update this later, when I visit more. read more

I had high hopes for Mallet Brothers BBQ as my boyfriend's parents were adamant about taking us there while we were in town visiting. San Diego has some amazing cuisine, but unfortunately good BBQ is far and few between so we are always promised an amazing night of BBQ one night during each visit to College Station. While the 15 minute trek to Navasota doesn't seem like that big of a deal, it was pitch black out and we were exhausted from a nonstop three day family visit. Having only tried Catfish once before (we don't have it in Southern California), I knew that was what I was going to order. I love the cornmeal batter and the distinct flavor of this fish. The meal looked promising when two extremely large pieces of Catfish were placed in front of me, but I was disappointed to find that the batter was fried too long and was rock hard. Even my attempts to cut through it with a knife were challenging. For my sides I decided on the mashed potatoes and mac n' cheese. They were out of mac n' cheese and the 30+ minute wait for a new batch was definitely not worth it. It was very runny and extremely bland. My boyfriend was a big fan of his jalapeno cheese sausage and ribs though. He was not very impressed with his side of mac n' cheese either, but decided that the flavorful jalapeno cheese sausage more than made up for it. Quick Tip: There is only one type of BBQ sauce provided on the table, but they also have sweet and spicy options behind the counter if you ask for it. read more

I hired Mallett for wedding reception catering and was so disappointed in their service. They totally forgot one of the main meats that I had ordered. Who does that? I had spoken with them to confirm and pay for the order a week before the wedding. When the meal was delivered, the turkey that I had ordered was nowhere to be seen. I was very upset and frustrated as I had told many friends that we would have the turkey as it was good as far as taste goes. I was so embarrassed since there were only two meats served instead of the three I had ordered, especially since the one I had bragged about was the one missing. Luckily we had enough food for our guests. Apparently the turkey was never even made in the first place even though it was part of the catering order. So if you've never been to one of these restaurants: you walk in and it's set up cafeteria style. You pick your meat and pay, then you pick your sides yourself at the end. I've been past this place several times and the parking lot is always almost empty. Maybe one or two cars. That's usually NOT a good sign. However, we thought we'd give it a try. BIG MISTAKE. We barely had time to start on the salad and the fried mushrooms came out. Salad bar is pretty sad. Ranch dressing is aweful. Fried mushrooms were very good though and the order was extremely large. Our steaks came out almost immediately after the mushrooms. We weren't there a full 10 minutes and all our food was there on the table. It's not like the place was packed and they needed to rush us out. It was almost empty. We ordered the ribeye and sirloin cooked rare. They were barely seared on the outside. There's a difference between rare and RAW. We tried to eat them but they were drenched in so much salty seasoning they were not edible. Don't offer steaks if you cannot properly cook one. The baked potato was huge but there was nothing on it. You put your own toppings on at the salad bar. Great bacon bits. Sadly, there was no real butter. The only thing to be found was some type of yellow looking margarine like substance. Gross. They credited back the money for the steaks but no apology or anything. Came here for lunch on a Monday. Mallett Brothers is a family-owned BBQ restaurant next to the Comfort Inn and Suites in Navasota. It is not a fancy 'Q place like Lambert's in Austin or Smoke in Dallas - but its barbecue beats some of the BBQ places ('temples') I've recently visited in Lockhart. I ordered a couple of ribs and some turkey along with one side and some iced tea. I chose potato salad from a buffet-like self-serve station that offered beans, potatoes, onions, corn casserole, etc. Everyone at the counter was friendly. My lunch cost a little over $10. The (beef) ribs were great. Really flavorful with a good smokey taste and nice 'ring.' They were served "dry" and really didn't need sauce to improve them. If you like a juicy, undercooked rib (I don't) you might not care for them though. The turkey was good - not dried out like other places - it's hard to make flavorful BBQ turkey (Black's in Lockhart does a good job) but this bird was pretty good. I think i would order a rack of ribs (and try the brisket) next time I go to Mallett Bros. The potato salad was good but not sure it was made in house (could be). And the iced tea was fresh and tasty. About the only thing I was a bit disappointed by was the decor - pretty simple - but that's not important with BBQ, IMHO. And I kinda wonder if they use electric smokers instead of the old time, hard earned smoke required by wood-fired pits. I'll find out next time. This was a good find; I'll be back.... read more
