Felt like having Chinese food on my visit to Portland so I made my way to Mama Chow's! I ended up ordering the chicken dumplings. They give a good amount for the price, which is good because dumplings never fill me up. These ones are wrapped in a skinny wrapper which is good since they aren't doughy. The chicken was very tender, although slightly bland. Could have used some more flavor but the sauce that comes with it solves that issue. Friendly service, but took around 15-20 mins for my order. Cute little food cart that's a little further than the block of food carts downtown. They keep it simple with 4 items to choose from. I got the chicken dumplings over garlic noodles. I split some dumplings and lollipop wings with a friend so I could try both. I love their garlic noodles! I don't know what it is but I kept eating despite being really full. They give you a container of onion shallots for the noodles as well as spicy sauce to dip your dumplings in. They give you 5 dumplings along with bok choy. The portion sizes are HUGE! I couldn't finish it.... and that's saying quite a bit. The chicken dumplings were plump and juicy. The wings were tender, and filled with delicious meat. So.... let me start of by saying, I heard about this place from watching a YouTube food Blogger named Mikey Chen. He came to Portland to check out the local food scene and this was one of his stops. He totally geeked out in the video and I can see why. This food was SOOO good. I got the Shoyu Lollipop Chicken Wings and the garlic noodles. I said no spice cuz I was worried about potentially ruining the experience, but I could have easily had medium spice and been fine. So... there wasn't a much heat as I'd like, but that was totally my fault. If you can handle spice, I would say to at least get the medium spice. I have GERD and probably could have got away with it. So, my noodles had no spice but they were still very very flavorful. Omg, it was delicious. The cook gave me this delicious onion type relish and some spice on the side. I mixed it all in together and it was FANTASTIC. Shoyu is my favorite flavor and the wings were so damn good. I meant to run back and compliment the chef but our parking timer was expiring so I forgot. (Sorry Sir, but it was PHENOMENAL) I also wish I had more zing on the wings though. Again, that's my bad. But yes, this was a worthy dish. I would come back for more. My husband got the Wonton soup and it was so good. The broth was magic. It was so light not when you slurped it, you got to taste the intricate and beautiful flavors that came through. It was wonderfully made. The Wonton's were cooked perfectly. Limited hours, but this place is a yummy change of pace from your typical asian cart, so definitely catch them if you're in the area! We ordered the chicken wings, garlic noodles, and dumplings. All were flavorful and hit the spot. The garlic noodles stood out the most though, they are just seasoned so well (I love my salt). What I appreciated was that it wasn't overly buttery (as has been my typical experience with garlic noodles), so it's easy to keep eating and eating. They're located in a parking lot, just 2 short blocks away from Pine Street Market. We got their Kaluha pig with garlic noodles. The pork was juicy, tender, and flavorful. Their garlic noodles are fantastic! Your first bite you get hit with the buttery aroma that the noodles are stir fried with, then the garlic and savory taste follows. As you chew, you realize you're a crunchy AND chewy noodle person. The chewy egg noodles are strategically stir fried so parts of it are crunchy, and you literally have a plethora of flavors and textures swimming in your mouth. I have been dying to try this place for some time now, and I can say, without a doubt, it not only lived up to, but exceed my expectations. First and foremost, the proprietors (Jeff and Margaret) are some of the nicest food cart/restaurant owners I have met; they are incredibly personable and I had a fun time chatting with them while my food was being prepared. As for the food itself, I went for the classic Lollipop Wings and subbed Garlic Noodles in for the rice. Maybe the best chicken wings I've had in my life. They were so crispy, so moist that they practically fell off the bone, and packed with flavor. The garlic noodles and baby bok choy were also super delicious, and had a heat that almost kind of numbed your mouth a little bit (like I've heard some Asian chilies do, rather than a blast of pure capsaicin that overwhelms you. For anybody who has not yet tried this place, it is a must on my Portland food/cart list; my only regret is that I kept putting off coming here for so long. So excited to try the garlic noodle here in the USA but a bit disappointed. The noodle is very hard to chew and not as spicy or more garlic as should be. Mama Chow's Kitchen is just down the street from my office and I really enjoy getting their garlic noodles with lollipop wings ($12). The noodles are bursting with garlicky deliciousness, so I try to get this dish when I don't have any afternoon meetings in tiny meeting rooms with lots of talking from me ;) The noodles are always cooked perfectly and I love the chewiness of them. Super flavorful and a pretty good portion for the price ($7 for the noodles only). The lollipop chicken wings are really tasty as well. The exterior is nice and crunchy, and the meat is fall off the bone tender. An added bonus is how easy they are to eat since they're in lollipop form! They sometimes sell out though, so make sure to come before the lunch rush wipes them out. The workers are really friendly and get food out quickly, even with a long line. PS: There's a sign that says "allergies? let us know!" and I told them I'm allergic to peanuts. This is a peanut-free cart, though they do use sesame if you're allergic to that. read more

Finally! This place is popular and sells out quickly for good reason. Quite honestly, this is on my list for lunch now because of the quality of food and the great service that was provided. A lot of things were sold out by the time I showed up but the staff was willing to substitute certain ingredients and gave their own suggestions as well. I got the lollipop chicken over noodles (instead of the usual rice since they were out), but it was great! The chicken was crunchy and full of garlicy flavor on the outside, and tender on the inside. I have been seeing a lot of Insta pictures of Mama Chows. Yesterday I drove from my home in Camas down to Portland on 2nd Ave.. Near the waterfront. It was kind of a gloomy rainy day but well worth it! The food that I had was so amazing it made me happy :-) I am definitely going to go down there a bit earlier next time. I arrived at 2 PM, they close at 3 PM. They were out of a few of their items. I had the shrimp and pork dumplings over garlic noodles. I ordered medium heat. Could've gone for a little hotter. The chili oil came in handy for that. We also had the lollipop wings. Both things were fresh, and delicious. The dumplings were tender and had plenty of shrimp in them. The wings were also juicy and tender. The sauce that came with them was so good! The meat came right off in a lollipop:) If you have not been down there, you must Run & try it. For the first time since COVID hit I finally got my Garlic noodle fix this afternoon and if it's even possible, Mama Chow's tastes better than it did before. Argh, I dislike being a hater, but for me the hype was not so real for Mama Chow's. I got the lollipop wings on top of garlic noodles (heat level spicy). I found the lollipop style to not be any softer or juicier than regular wings. The flavor was good but there needed to be a thicker coating of sauce IMO. A similar style of Asian-inspired lollipop wings were more memorable at Departure. The garlic noodles also did not live up to the hype for me. They were too monotonous, with it just being a big hunk of noodles with some bok choy on top... the first bite tasted the same as the last, which got boring fast. And not as flavorful as I would have expected. I also found the noodles to be a bit too chewy for my liking. This could potentially be a case of me hearing how good this place was for years and coming in with too high of hopes. I laugh at myself as a Chinese person who traveled from San Francisco and ate Chinese food in Portland..... but the hype is too real for Mama Chow's Kitchen. Mama Chow's takes Asian comfort food classics such as fried wings, garlic noodles, fried wontons, whips it up with fresh ingredients and good honest cooking, and serves it in a food truck for a memorably hip dining experience. Lollipop wings: A guilt trip of sweet and savory. The honey soy garlic glaze complemented the roasty chicken, resulting in a melange of pan-Asian flavors. The chicken wings are succulent and not overly saucy, which in my opinion far exceeds Korean style chicken wings that are often too dry or too wet. And as if the name weren't irresistible enough, Lollipop Wings defy standard chicken-wing physics in that the chunky meat falls right off the bone. Garlic noodles: While garlic noodles are usually heavy on the garlic and augmented by butter, I appreciate the extra dimension with spice and sesame to render a bolder flavor profile. The fiery noodles pair well with the sweet and fresh, crisp Chinese greens. A bit greasier than I would have liked (but then again I am a health freak who obsesses over every drop of oil) Wonton: Likely the best pan-fried wonton I've ever had--browned to a precise equilibrium of the best of both worlds in a slight crisp on the outside with luscious softness from the inside. The incorporation of veggies into the filling, sprinkle of green onions and spice, and optional chili oil dipping sauce for the adventurous, add flair and balance. Mama Chow's Kitchen is a Chinese cart that focuses on doing a few simple dishes exceedingly well. The dishes that I've had were the spare ribs and the "lollipop" chicken wings, both of which were served with an ample side of white rice and steamed bok choy. I'm not the biggest fan of bok choy, but when eaten all together, it makes for a delicious filling meal that isn't anywhere near as heavy as you might fear food-cart Chinese might be. Both meats were superbly done, with a sauce that hit all the right notes without being cloying or overpowering. It's rare to find a cart that cooks meat to order this well (and yet without taking 10 minutes to prepare). For those curious, the "lollipop" wings refer to the fact that one of the bones was removed (for making stock for the wonton soup, which I haven't tried), and the other was pulled out a bit for use as a handle. Easier to eat than a normal chicken wing. Still a bit sticky for lunch (as were the spare ribs), but so what? Jeff really seems to know what he's doing. His cart is very attractive, and he's a nice guy to chat with while your food is cooking. My only real caveat is that he seems to run out of some foods towards the end of the lunch hour, depending on whatever was popular that day. read more

Their menu is simple, option of 6 entrees or you can top their garlic noodles with any protein (dumplings, wings or pork). Eventually I decided on the lollipop wings with slightly spicy garlic noodles. The wings were perfectly crispy on the outside, moist and juicy on the inside. There was plenty of flavor with the wings but there was a gamey taste to the chicken itself that I wasn't too fond of. The garlic noodles were garlicky but I wish I would've gone a little spicier (fear of needing a bathroom later always has me playing safe). Jeff and his team produce fresh, consistent, quality, and most importantly delicious food that pdx foodies can't get enough of. Every person I have recommended Mama Chows to has loved it and this is one of the few places I insist every friend of mine tries. Every person that has gone has told me they now get why I go so often. When my parents visited all the way from Hawaii they went TWICE during their short stay, it's just that good. My boyfriend and I literally go at least once a week, sometimes more. Our go to order is the lollipop wings over garlic spicy noodles & the chicken dumplings over garlic spicy noodles. You need to try the dumplings, they're already delicious on their own but Jeff's dumpling sauce is insane and elevates the whole dish to another level.
