This place was surprising! The buns are massive! I've never seen buns this large. They are super filling but also very flavorful. I got the pork belly but also had to try the bbq pork rodeo. I am telling you that the rodeo one is hands down the most interesting yet explosive in flavor that you will find. The pork belly one was GOOD but the rodeo one was EPiC. You have to try it. The people there were uber friendly and helpful in answering any questions about the menu, allergens, etc. The cart was cute with it's Breaking Bad theme and the area to sit and eat was charming and going to be perfect when summer rolls around. The only thing I disliked was the slaw. It was unnecessary and has the weirdest texture. Will definitely be going here again. We ordered the Miso Pork Belly, Braised Beef Tonkatsu and Yakisoba with Chicken. The reviews looked great so I was excited! The positives: the bao buns and the Yakisoba noodles were great. The slaw that came was amazing: refreshing, crisp and mild flavor. The constructive: the pork belly didn't stand out and blended in with the veggies in the bao. There's no missing or mistaking the delicious aroma of Breaking Buns as you pull up to the parking lot. Even if there were more than the pair of food carts that are already present, you would be able to identify this cart by scent alone immediately, and be explicably drawn to it, like being caught in a tractor beam! Between the two of us, we ordered three Pork Belly Bao, and two each of the Szechuan Cow Bao and the Braised Beef Tonkatsu Bao, to get a good feel for multiple dishes, not realizing how incredibly filling they are, meaning our lunch order also became our dinner! But no complaints were heard from us either time, as we enjoyed every single bite! No wonder there aren't many other carts at this little pod; they've probably all been put out of business, or had to move elsewhere, thanks to Breaking Buns' aromatic ascendancy, and surprisingly affordable pricing. You'd be hard-pressed to find a cheaper, more filling, and more delicious meal anywhere in P-town! Breaking Buns, located in SE at the edge of Reed College. It's in a cart pod, and there's tables with heaters. Parking lot is pretty small. They took my order and let me know there were two in front of e so it would be 20 minutes or so. NBD, I popped over to Portland Leather Goods! We ordered 3 kinds of Bao, which they serve as a soft taco shape with fillings and a yummy side salad. Also an order of yakisoba for the kids (whoops, had to take the jalapeño off!) and edamame (which was 3x the size of most and had great salt). Best bao was the beef tonkatsu, followed by pork belly and then the orange chicken. I liked the flavor of the orange but it was overshadowed by the heat. Tonkatsu was sweet, multidimensional, and nice and soft. We'll be back! read more

The HIGHS - We ordered the Baos and they came out fresh and made to order! - Baos themselves were HUGE, soft, and fluffy - You could tell the meat was very well braised over a several hours since it was nicely marinated - Loved the side of Asian fusion coleslaw, much better than your typical American coleslaw. I enjoyed the green onions and the tangy sauce complemented the meat in the baos. - Service about 10-15 mins, very reasonable wait - ~$12 for 3 baos which I think is also reasonable The MIDS - Braised meat was a little too salty for my taste - The pork belly bao absorbed a little too much of the sauce and sort of fell apart in the middle - Seating area and tables was a little barren given its remote location, but was quiet and had plenty of parking. We opted to eat in our car instead. CONCLUSION I loved the baos and would come back to try the other flavors! There is ALOT of variety to try from. Everything was fresh and made to order. There are a few parking spots up front with plenty of sitting space with some covered spots. Service - They were fairly quick but I wouldn't say it's was the most friendly or rude which I honestly appreciate sometimes. Food - We ordered the BBQ Pork Rodeo Bao and it was packed full of flavor, in particular strong on mushrooms in a fluffy bun - recommend eating it over a plate because the bun can rip at the bottom. The bao are made fresh to order so you get a pillowy soft rice bun stiuffed with a piping hot filling. While they offer different fillings, each order of three has to be the same. I went with the orange chicken and it was very flavorful. On a previous visit, I had the Yakisoba noodles with pork belly. Breaking Buns definitely puts their own fusion spin on them, so the flavor profile was not what I expected. That's why this time I went for the Bao and they were a far better choice, imo. It's a food truck so in inclement weather, wait in your car! They give you a buzzer so you know when your order is ready. There are tables and various seating arrangements behind the cart if you want to eat there in nicer weather. And do visit the adjacent produce market, they have the best produce at reasonable prices. located with other food carts, the food cart pod was located in an awkward location. there was a small gravel parking lot right next to the breaking buns food cart. outside seating available, probably nicer to sit at on warmer sunny day! we ordered 6 buns, 3 of each of the following, braised beef tonkatsu bao & pork belly bao. both came out hot and with a side of coleslaw. the wait time between ordering and receiving our food was decent, as it was made to order. the braised beef tonkatsu bao was packing with flavor, you can tell the beef was soaked up with flavor, and as you ate it, the beef would easily tear with each bite. however, the longer you ate the bao, the saltier the bao tasted - to the point it kinda hurts your mouth if you dont cleanse your palate. it was nice to have the coleslaw there to reset the palate - it tasted more like a choppy asian salad than coleslaw which i enjoyed more than i thought. i had the pork belly bao after the braised beef tonkatsu bao and it the flavor was a bit underwhelming (probably because the braised beef tonkatsu had a stronger flavor profile). there was more pork belly than mushroom in the filling, filling was soaked in sauce, which i dont mind for the most part. however, the sauce soaked into the bun and fell apart as i was eating it (ended up having to use chopsticks to eat the rest). the filling both had somewhat of a mushy texture and with the bao bun soaked in sauce, the bun overall had a mushy texture as you ate it. i find myself enjoying the food overall and look forward to trying other flavors of bao buns when im in the area next! read more

I had no idea was a food cart and did not notice that it said that on yelp but when I got here, I didn't know what to expect because when I saw the photos, they look really delicious like restaurant stuff but of course you can get restaurant quality from a food truck if you have all the right tools and what not. Everything we've tried has been delicious, but our go-to favorites are definitely the Braised beef Tonkatsu, and the Vietnamese cold noodle salad (with crispy fried Ota tofu). The Tonkatsu is so savory and tender, packed with tons of flavor. The cold noodles are fresh and light with a nice crisp crunch from the veggies & herbs, something we crave especially in the summer months. They're super consistent here, always delivering great dishes. Aside from the wonderful food, Shaolin & Phil are super nice. When we're there with our dog they offer treats (side note the treats are real meat tidbits & this is the only spot our dog actually takes treats from!). Even when they're busy Shaolin always welcomes us with a great big smile, and even remembers our usual order. Highly recommended Breaking Buns if you're looking for good Bao! read more

As a bun lover, I was so excited to try this spot as I had read and heard great things. Things didn't get off to a good start, though. We first had to wait nearly 20 minutes to get our order, even though no one else was around. It was weird actually that it took so long. We ordered 3 buns of the Szechwan chicken and 3 buns of the pork belly buns, along with an order of Yakisoba with shrimp. The flavor and texture of the chicken was nothing special. It was like soggy pulled-pork with literally no Szechwan flavor. So disappointing. The pork belly buns had fantastic flavor but all of their buns (both the pork and the chicken) had the texture of a store bought bun that had been microwaved. Maybe that's their only option, I don't know, but the problem is that if you don't eat them within 60 seconds they become dry and break apart. The Yakisoba, though, was the star of the meal. A really nice portion with lots of shrimp and excellent flavor. I would return just for that. read more
