It is so sad to say that this restaurant is no longer good, the service is very good but the food ... terribly bad! The chips are the cheapest you find in the supermarket, the sauce to eat them it was cold (from the fridge!), The glass of the waters such as horchata and jamaica are the smaller ones (they cost only $3 but is preferible that you give us the option of a larger size for different price), and the rest of the food (we ordered the Milanese torta (the piece of meat was super small), the stuffed chili was not battered and the whole dish has no flavor, the burrito was completely "meh" and the rice with seafood only tasted like mayonnaise ... it was so bad that even we avoid the desserts. So guys of "Mama Coco" please, improve. You started being so good and now it was tasteless experience. And definitely you have to move the recycle bin near the outside tables, we had an annoying situation with flies on our table :( read more

Saw this place on Check Please! Bay Area so really wanted to stop in. Really cute place, nicely decorated. Service was friendly and we got to have a nice little discussion. Patio is cute and would be great on a warm day. They also said dogs are allowed on the patio. My mom really enjoyed her seafood enchiladas, which were full of fresh seafood. The guacamole was pretty good, too. I was disappointed on my huarache, however, just rather bland. Maybe next time I'll share with her and we can have dessert, as she was eyeballing the flan and the churros were calling my name. Margaritas are delicious. Food is good. But most dishes have Chipotle sauce. Soo if you don't like Chipotle make sure to mention not to put the sauce. After the glowing reviews of check please on KQED we decided to try this place, but we were underwhelmed. I had the cochinito pibil and while the pork was tender it was bland, and only warm nit hot. The mango salad was limp, but the rice was delicious, possibly the best thing on My plate and piping hot. My mom had the Chile Relleno but it wasn't a Chile Relleno to us since it wasn't battered at all. To start with, the food was not up to the mark, a lot better Mexican restaurants around the area, don't waste your money here. Worse is the customer service. While serving our food the restaurant Owner dropped our iPhone, which was on the table, on the floor. This shattered the phone's back panel. We promptly showed this to him and he initially acknowledged his mistake and agreed to reimburse us for the costs to repair it and directed us to a store owned by an acquanitance of his to repair it. We did just as he said and his friend quoted $500 to repair it. We also went to the Apple store soon after where again they quoted $500 to repair it. On intimating him of the cost, he not only refused to pay ANY MONEY towards it, but instead refused to have broken the phone and ACCUSED US of having broken the phone. We came here on a Monday evening early so it was relatively quiet, but boy did this place not disappoint. They have a relatively short menu, but all the staples. We ordered tortilla soup, mole chicken, and the tostada ensalada. The spices and sauces in everything were incredible, right down to the complimentary salsa that accompanied the chips. The salad was really good too. Best part of the night was dessert. My husband ordered a Mama Coco iced coffee (half coffee half horchata) and raved over it, and the churros with ice cream were to die for. Hands down best churros I've ever eaten. The only good thing about this place is the staff, they were friendly and accommodating. We had to cancel the kids quesadilla order and they obliged to cancel it, no questions asked. We have dined on Mexican food throughout California and even a little in Mexico and I must say we have never experienced such a delicious offering as here at Mama Coco! The food was absolutely flawless and obviously prepared by an experienced chef. We started with nachos and had beef added and when it arrived it honestly was large enough to be a meal for 4! Most places offer a tiny bit of whatever meat you choose mixed in with a pile of stale chips, NOT HERE, they pile these high with delectable offerings and a sauce that is beyond words. I would say these are the absolute best nachos we have ever eaten anywhere hands down. We also ordered the Cochinita Pibil, a superb pork dish marinated in a delectable sauce and served with coconut rice and string fresh vegetables. Absolutely spot on. The tastes infused within this dish are remarkable to say the least. A must try for anyone dining here that enjoys pork. We also ordered Carne a la tampiquena, a skirt steak offering with two mole enchiladas. Again, just a wonderful mixture of flavors and perfectly prepared. Our children ordered the kids chicken quesadilla and we have never seen them prepared like this! The chicken was perfectly cooked and stacked literally 3 inches high in a perfectly toasted tortilla. This made the kids night as they are used to flat not very tasty meals for kids at Mexican eateries. All in all this deserves every star we could give and more! Michelin needs to revisit and up the stars they have provided. Congratulations to this family owned and operated establishment for not only surviving the pandemic, but thriving through the take outs we saw flowing out the door throughout our meal. They are very conscious of following health and safety rules caused by the pandemic and we were very impressed with the overall cleanliness of the entire establishment. The ambiance is really cute, a real life Mama Coco concept like the movie. Unfortunately, everything else was not a good experience. The service was terrible. We waited 20 minutes for our drinks and then 45 minutes for our food. I believe the waiter forgot to put in our order. When we got the food, he didn't even apologize or check back with us. When we got the check, they charged us a full adult meal when we had ordered a kids chicken quesadilla for my daughter. The food itself wasn't very good either. The ceviche was bland, and the taquitos beef was dry and tasteless for my son. Still, no apologies from the staff just ignoring us as if they did nothing wrong which is even worse. We used to live in San Diego and San Francisco where the best burritos in California could be found so I think I have pretty good idea on what delicious Mexican food. A little bit of an unknown spot on El Camino in Menlo Park between Ravenswood and Santa Cruz Ave. The food here is awesome, really high-quality Mexican with a homemade feel. My go to is the shrimp burrito, but you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. There's a really neat back patio for hanging out, or for a private event for which you can reserve the space if needed. One of the best parts about Mama Coco and why I always find myself returning is the service. Ownership and cooks and staff are incredibly friendly, take care of the locals, and take pride in their product. Love this place, and you will too! read more

I ordered take out from this place twice, and the first time everything was fine, because I got there almost right before their closing time. This time, however, I called them at 6:05 pm. They told me that it'll be ready in 35 minutes, so I got there at 6:42 pm. I didn't leave until 7:10... Why? Because people that work there are incompetent. One of them checked my order and it had sour cream on it, even though I asked for no sour cream and no cheese... It took 20 minutes to remake the salad, and the beef on it still had cheese... They took another 10 to replace the beef... And I was watching them all this time, and the staff just moves very slowly. The space is airy and inviting; turquoise walls and red accents reminiscent of Aztec Mexico. The restaurant is split in two spaces; a main dining area to the right and take-out/bar seating over the open kitchen to the left. I ordered the veggie tostada salad for take out; grilled vegetables of sweet peppers, onions, and sweet potatoes over a romaine salad with black beans, pico de gallo, and a sprinkling of cotija cheese, guacamole, and Mexican crema served with serrano chile vinaigrette. The tostada shell was crisp and light. Not a greasy bottom in sight. I really enjoyed my dish. It was fresh, hearty, flavorful, delicious. The same could be said by my coworkers. They all seemed to really enjoy the food. Service was attentive, friendly and were kind enough to accommodate our separate orders and different methods of payment. Our food was made lighting fast. My wife and I had dinner at Mama Coco a few weeks ago. I'm baffled by all of the glowing 5-star reviews since our experience was completely the opposite. Although there were not that many parties in the restaurant at the time we were dining (maybe 4 others), we waited almost 45 minutes to receive our entrees. In that period of time, 2 parties got up and left the restaurant as they weren't being waited on. When our $15 entrees finally arrived, I was surprised at the small quantity of food on each plate. We were also provided only 3 small tortillas between us. The taste of the entrees was nothing special. Several times, we had asked for refills on water and chips and got neither. The margarita my wife ordered tasted wrong, and this is not a difficult drink to make. After leaving the restaurant, we ended up walking downtown for ice cream, since we both left the restaurant hungry. I hope that someone who is close to the owners will hold an intervention since they are not going to make it if this continues to happen. I can say without hesitation that this was the most disappointing dining experience that we've had in years. I was just here for lunch with my husband and 4 year old twins and had a few major problems with our experience. First and most concerning: we sat at the bar with a view to the kitchen. I saw a cook set a bucket of raw chicken on the counter use to prepare dishes, including those about to go out to diners, use her hands to transfer chicken breasts to the grill, wipe her hand on a towel, set the towel on the counter, and then go about touching stuff in the prep area. After a few minute she went to the back area where I hope she washed her hands. I immediately spoke to the person who I think is the owner. He took the towel off the counter but didn't clean any of the surfaces. This is the same counter where cooked, prepared food is assembled. Second, the restaurant was not at all crowded but service was very slow. We waited a long time for our food. When it finally came, they delivered the wrong order for our twins - burritos instead of the tacos we had ordered. The server realized the mistake and took the burritos back. While we were waiting I witnessed the raw chicken incident. You'd think it would take a few minutes to assemble chicken tacos to correct the order but we waited a long time - maybe ten minutes. After seeing the raw chicken handled improperly, we decided to leave without waiting for the food. We were there at least 40 minutes and our two four year olds never received the food they ordered. However, after seeing how they handle cross-contamination in the kitchen, I'm glad we weren't served the food. read more

The restaurant was virtually empty but the server insisted we sit at a table in front of an open door ( we requested to not sit in front of an open door) because they had reservations for all the other tables in the restaurant. A couple parties trickled in but were nowhere near capacity. As the sun set I got colder and colder until I was virtually fighting off hypothermia. Tacos four mixed, Marg pitcher, cheese enchiladas, steak medium rare It's tasty and has okay prices. It's mid-range, not an authentic-feeling local kind of place, but not wildly expensive. We got an order of 4 assorted tacos (2 beef, 2 chicken), an order of cheese enchiladas, and a steak tampiqueña, with a pitcher of margaritas, and it came to about $70 total. The steak was more medium than medium-rare. It came with some small flour tortillas and cooked peppers and onions, so it was sort of like fajitas. The food could have been a bit hotter. The pitcher of margaritas was really ice-filled, and not quite worth the $23 or so they charged. It had booze in it, but I'd have preferred it less watered down. They brought us chips and salsa while we waited that were decent: fresh chips and fresh salsa. The steak came with an enchilada with a nice molé sauce. I prefer the more flavorful tacos from a good taco truck, although the meat here was definitely of higher quality. The service was good, attentive, and friendly. I'd go back, but it didn't blow me out of the water or anything, so I'd be just as happy trying a new place with good reviews. It might be able to get to four stars if it's consistent and maybe if there's outdoor seating when it's warmer. It seemed like a neighborhood go-to and it got pretty busy even on a random weeknight, but even so it wasn't too loud, and stayed at a nice volume for sitting and chatting. read more

What an amazing new restaurant! I came here with my husband and another couple and the service was excellent from start to finish. Everything is homemade and you can tell. The chips and guacamole were amazing and they had two salsas (a green and red) that were sooo good. I also had the sangria and it was perfect. I saw another review that theirs didn't come with ice but mine had the perfect amount; enough to keep cool but not so much that it watered down my drink. For dinner I had the carne (can't remember the rest of the name) and my husband had the suckling pig. Mine was so flavorful and the homemade tortillas were to die for. The portions were also spot on; plate was full but just the right amount. I didn't try the pork but his plate was wiped clean. Usually Mexican food makes me feel overly full but the food was so clean I feel great and I even had a lot of chips and a whole basket of tortillas! To finish we split the flan. I don't know how many more adjectives I can use for amazing but it is something you must try! What a perfect end. If you want authentic and clean Mexican food, this is the place. I went in with high expectations due to high ratings on Yelp and reading a bit of who the owners were on their website. I got a feel of it being authentic Mexican comfort food but it's not at all what I got when I tried my food. We ordered the empanadas,mole chicken enchiladas, shrimp Chile relleno, a kids cheese quesadilla and two margaritas not only was it pricey, but the food was not good. My enchiladas had way too much clove, and the rice tasted too strong in tomato purée, my beans tasted like they were canned and the empanadas ($13 for only two) seemed liked they were reheated on the griddle and were a bit burnt. The food was ok, but my last visit was so upsetting I have never returned. My wife and I were having a nice meal when a man sat down at an adjacent table, which was otherwise empty, to talk with some friends at a different table. Gradually their conversation got louder and louder. The room is acoustically lively, and within 10-15 minutes my wife and I had to shout at each other over the yelling of the man and his friend. We finally got up and left without finishing our dinner. On the way out we learned that the man who was yelling so loudly and rudely, and destroying everyone's evening, was the OWNER! I choose this restaurant for a gathering with friends since a friend was visiting from Oregon. Since my friend and her husband live in San Francisco, I decided to find a restaurant that could at least meet us half way. There was a kitchen area but it looked kind of dirty, which they didn't play in. Hope they disinfect that area. It's a cute little restaurant and spacious patio area. We were sat outside and thankfully the weather was nice around an early dinner meeting. My friends from SF were going to be late so we decided to order the guacamole appetizer and ordered our food. Good thing we did because it seems that the service was kind of slow. It wasn't busy just yet either. My older son was already hungry and started complaining that he wanted his quesadilla. When our food and drinks did come, I got the salmon dish, my husband got the carne asada and my friend got the tostada ensalada. Food was okay. I really wasn't totally blown away by the food. Some of my veggies taste like it was overcooked. I got an ice tea and we also got water but no one came by throughout the course of the meal to give us refills. When my friends from SF arrived and ordered their taco dish, my friend's husband was surprised on the slow service as well. Good thing we still had some appetizers left over so that they wouldn't be so hungry. I think later on we noticed that there may have been only one server that Saturday night. After finishing my tostada ensalada, I actually felt ashamed that the idea of getting Chipotle takeout even entered my mind, before I decided to come here instead. I could eat this salad every single day and not get sick of it (...and I can count the dishes on one hand that I say that about). I would have included a picture, but I ate it too fast. The ingredients were so fresh, it tasted like they were just picked. The Serrano dressing was the perfect sweet & spicy balance, the tostada was airy and delicious (not greasy) - I even liked the pepper slices (and I don't even like peppers!) They even included complimentary chips and salsa - the chips were light and perfectly seasoned... I could tell they were homemade. I love Mexican food and have traveled throughout the Southwest. I was disappointed with the food at Mama Coco's. I ordered an enchilada plate and it was pretty average. I was not fond of the enchilada sauce as i found it somewhat bland. The black beans on the side were like a thick purée, but the rice was good. The salsa served with the chips was a green salsa which was on the blander side. My son ordered the Taco plate and he said they were good. He enjoyed tasting the variety of meats in the tacos. They only offered one lunch special, and for the quality of food, I thought the food was overpriced. I won't return. read more
