    Breakfast burrito al pastor
    Steve D.

Saw this place coming back from an early morning hike and thought the might have a breakfast burrito. They sure did--I got it with al pastor and a coffee, and sat in the warm sunshine at a table out front munching their chips with nicely spicy bean dip while they made the burrito. Burrito was hot and delicious, lots of flavor, not at all dry, and ingredients well-distributed. I got to practice a little Spanish with the staff, who were incredibly attentive and friendly. I may make a habit of this place.

Great little taqueria next to the firehouse in Portola Valley. Very friendly service and excellent food. I had the quesabirria. The meat was tender and lean. Came wrapped in a soft corn tortilla on the inside and crispy corn tortillas on the outside. They also served fried corn tortillas and bean dip with the meal. I will definitely be back to try more of their menu.

Underwhelming burritos. Pretty small, bland, and light on protein. Seemed like a nice enough place but we won't be back.

Coming from Mexican & Afro-Latin families that COOK, my partner and I are rarely impressed enough to write one. However, the ambiance, quality of service AND food at El Comal are worth the visit! Tacos, sopes, soups, birria all delicious. Tortillas are handmade fresh when ordered and their menudo & posole are about as authentic as you can get. The staff is phenomenal and responsive, even when they're super busy. The menu changes to reflect what they have fresh/on hand which is commendable & more sustainable [wish more places did this]. The only downsides are chips n salsa are extra (understandable with the cost of things right now), they don't always have hominy or cabbage on hand for the menudo/posole, no dessert options without wheat/GF. Still, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I was disappointed that they were out of lengua since I'm not typically a fan of the other meats. The times I've had asada, it's usually dry, but I ordered it anyway not knowing what else to get and holy smokes was it good! It was so tender and flavorful that it changed my entire opinion of asada. It's really that good! Their chips were crispy and not stale and I just love their self serve salsas. It's usually a hit or miss at Mexican Restaurants, but it's great here! Unfortunately, it seemed like the employee did not want to be there and I felt a bit uncomfortable but the food well makes up for it.

There was color everywhere, and I truly loved their rainbow-pattern theme, papel-picados and mariposas displayed all throughout the restaurant. They definitely had so many different types of tequila brands displayed, which makes sense, but I thought it was nice. Parking was fine, thankfully, but it was very small. On this occasion, we came here on a Friday evening, we had made reservations for 6 of us. I personally ordered the agua fresca-pineapple and the lasagna. Because of timing for other errands we came at 10:30 am and they were open on time and ready. Sitting outside or inside is amazing, outside you get the crowd and the sun. Inside you get amazing interior design. My overall feedback is this is one of the rare "fancy" Mexican places that justify the price and justification. Everything is above average in taste and execution. Brunch Tacos mole: chicken mole poblano, scrambled eggs, huitlacoche, tortillas, epazote crema, fried shallots & avocado. Perfect portioning and the salad that came with it had a fantastic dressing. I pulled some chicken out and gave it to my wife and then it was perfect, a bit too overstuff before. The mole and overall taste were quite good though. Chilaquiles: tortilla chips sautéed in chile de árbol-guajillo salsa, topped with queso fresco, cilantro crema, and an egg. My wife loved this so much it made her question every time she didn't order it before. Fried egg sandwich: two over easy eggs on house baked brioche bun, chipotle aioli, avocado, bacon, cheddar cheese, fried shallot. Kids loved this and happily ate the leftover after. Iced Mexican Cafe: delicious iced coffee with a distinct Mexican taste. Distrito Verde: mezcal, basil, lemon, and falernum. Simple but refreshing brunch cocktail, really paired well with the mole tacos. Chips and salsa: These are not free but worth the price. Both the chips and the 2 salsa are of extremely good quality and preparation. Abnormally tasty and the kids went crazy eating it.

I ordered a burrito with carne asada along with one taco. Right away, I was impressed with the presentation. The carne asada was decent and filling, though I feel the burrito would've tasted much better with sour cream. Unfortunately, that came with an extra fee, so I skipped it. In hindsight, I probably would've enjoyed the meal more if I ordered a bowl instead, since the flavors might have stood out more without being wrapped in a tortilla. While it wasn't my favorite Mexican-style catering I've had, it was still a solid option for a work meal.
